[RBW] Cheviot dreaming

2017-11-06 Thread Joe Bernard
Whelp, this started as a "let's jump on that sale" journey towards a Cheviot
frame at a pre-sale price in a nice Roadini/RBW Blue...then I lost my mind.
Someone on a Roadini thread mentioned getting a custom color and I thought,
HEY! So I chatted with Will @ Riv and determined I could get anything I wanted
(that fit the bike/decals) from Rick at D I pondered on this a while and
looked at a lot of colors on the internets and decided a Candy Apple Red
Cheviot would be the cat's pajamas. Now my pre-sale bargain Chev is..not such a
bargain! Oops ;-)

It's going to be just gorgeous with the cream contrasts, and is sort of my shot
at a poor man's custom 'cause I know I'll never buy (or need) a true custom.
It's also a bit of an homage to the Jimmy Carter bike. His was an Atlantis and
a different shade of red, but that bike is what got me thinking about a red Riv
the other night. I can't wait!

[RBW] Re: The RBW Website has a new look...

2017-11-06 Thread Bill in Roswell GA
Lum, I like that idea a lot. But, being a former web dev proj mgr, Riv
would need someone to devote time in setting it up but also in being an
admin to watch post, just like Cyclofiend and other image based sites. I
think Cyclofiend prob has more Rivs posted than any place else (0r maybe
I'm just giving away my age).

Let's face it, a whole bunch of us old dudes don't want to deal with
Facebook, Instagram or any such hoopla. Some of you are good at posting
photos on Flickr once in a while.

Yep, it's the admin aspect, regular vigilance and all that to keep thinks
from getting out of hand, just like the moderators do here on RBW and iBob.

In other words, an image sharing forum would be great, but can only be as
great as the people moderating what is posted and maintaining some level of
standards.

Just my two cents worth,
Cheers,
Bill in Roswell GA

I always thought it would be cool to add a triple crank to my single speed- 3x1

[RBW] WTB/WTT Microshift Thumbies - Silver Thumbies/bar-end pods

2017-11-06 Thread Tim O. (Portland, OR)
Howdy!

I'm looking for some 9 speed Microshift Thumb shifters with the
indexed/friction option. I have a set of Silver/IRD thumbies with some
character that I can trade. See the pictures for more details:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/PEfKnI4Hp6BD3wCh1

If yours are in better shape, I could throw in a few bucks to even things out.

I also have a set of Silver bar-end pods that I could throw in for an
additional $20. They have a touch of shellac on the edges, but otherwise
they're basically new. Separately, I'd sell them for $25 shipped.

If you just want to buy my Silver thumbies, feel free to make an offer. :)

[RBW] Re: 3-Speed MTBing Resources?

2017-11-06 Thread Philip Williamson
I'm running an S2 (no coaster brake) on my Quickbeam, commuting into SF. I
like it a lot. The low isn't low enough for Patrick's needs, I'd wager.
The AW with a 34 x 18 looks nice, depending on tire diameter: 40", 53", 71"
gears. The S3X with a freewheel won't go that wide (39", 47", 63").

Build an AW wheel and let us know how it works out!

[RBW] Re: 3-Speed MTBing Resources?

2017-11-06 Thread A CT Cyclist
On my bike built for winter conditions I have a Shimano Alfine 8 speed hub
with a kick brake and a front rim brake for fair weather and back up. You
have to have a horizontal drop out to use the kick brake because of the
risk of pulling the wheel out of a vertical drop out. Its also cleaner?
more simple to run the IGH with out the need for a chain tensioner. I have
never experienced or should I say perceived any friction in any of the
gears.

In regards to tolerance to wet conditions no problems so far. Also I'd like
to note that People have been riding old 3 speed bikes for years all around
the world in all sorts of conditions. Anyone know what the dutch bicycles
use for IGH?

Finally Heinz Stücke used a Torpedo hub in his 3 speed that he traveled
the world with.
http://www.bikechina.com

PS I was glad someone brought up the issue of needing a fork designed with
intention of using a drum brake. If you google it you will find numerous
cautionary tales about using said drum brake on a "regular fork".

[RBW] Microsoft Thumbies Inside Mount

2017-11-06 Thread Joe Bernard
Hey! The 9-speed Microshifts on the current Clem are not adjustable for cable
angle, but they work fine with inside/reversed mounting on Boscos and Jones
Loop, the two bars I've tried; no issues with cables interfering with hands.
But be aware of how indexing would work with this setup: You would have to
connect the rear derailer to the left shifter and front to right, which might
feel odd for a while. It can be done, though, if that's what you're looking
for.

Re: [RBW] Winter tires - studded

2017-11-06 Thread Tim Gavin
Unfortunately, there are still limited options for 650b studded tires.

The only one that would fit under a P55 fender is the Nokian A10. It's a
stout commuter tire with reasonable tread and studs on the shoulders. Seem
like they'll get you across the morning re-frozen-meltwater on the bike
path.
$59 from Peter White (seems to be the only US source).
http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/studdedtires.php

Otherwise, Kenda, Schwalbe, and others make studded MTB tires in 27.5/650b,
but they all start at 2.1"/54 cm wide. Too wide for P55 fenders, maybe too
wide for the frame?

I've been riding 4.5" wide studded tires (45 Nrth Dillinger 5) the last
three Iowa winters, and now I have a set of 700 x 38 45 Nrth Gravdal tires
to try on my 'cross bike.

Re: [RBW] Re: 3-Speed MTBing Resources?

2017-11-06 Thread Patrick Moore
I never noticed friction or roughness or vibration with any AW hub, or for
that matter any Shimano 3 speed, but I sure did with the bottom gear of the
S3X. But I hear that these hubs "wear in" -- is this so? Note though that
my experience with AWs and Shimano 3s includes new as well as used hubs.

Many users of the Rohloff say that it does "wear in."

I'm interested in this thread -- how a wide range 3 speed hub might perform
in the real off road terrain (not just dusty irrigation roads) and extreme
cold that t'other Patrick rides in; that is, how does it perform as gearing
for the terrain, and how well do the innards resist torque and the elements?

As for torque, many quasi-professional road riders, if not real
professionals -- and maybe some of those, too -- used epicyclic hub gears;
didn't Tommy whatsisname, who set that miles per year record, use some sort
of 3 speed hub?

But Patrick: a AW-cum-drum in back, a Dynohub (tm)-cum-drum in front ... a
good 15 lb of hus! I owned one of the former, and it was a cool hunk of
metal, but damn, the thing must have weighed 8 or 10 lb.

Re: [RBW] Big clyde wears out Soma Weymouth 650B faster than anticipated...

2017-11-06 Thread Tim Gavin
I have ~1500-2000 miles on my Pacenti PL23s. I built them myself with DT
Swiss DB spokes to a Shimano dynamo hub and a VO Grand Cru touring hub. I
think I went with 36 spokes instead of 32.

They've been true and smooth under my ~230 lb weight, and half of those
miles include an added 20-40 lb load.

FYI, the PL23s have a more sculpted rim bead (for tubeless compatibility);
this makes tire mounting and removal a bit more of a chore (the rims make
for a tighter fit, necessitating tire levers more often than with older
rims). But tires bead up just fine once you get them into the channel.

And they're a very attractive rim. Low key shape and nice finish.

the rest of 2015 and most of 2016. I'm just now getting back into riding
more, did a 75 miler on the 28th and feeling pretty good. I'm estimating
6800KM in RUSA rides and then maybe a couple thousand more just riding
around and training rides. So about 5500ish miles or so on these.

I was going to take it out on this last Saturday for a 100k RUSA populaire
but I wanted to true it up first. Well upon further inspection...I had
broken a spoke. I was able to get it fairly true in my stand even with
only 35 out of 36 spokes. But then upon a more careful inspection of the
rim, several of the eyelets are cracked and pulling through, additionally
it looked like I had a few more spokes that were marginal. I took it to
the shop that built it and they said the rim was done and they recommended
getting a new rim, so basically a whole wheel rebuild, rim, spokes, the
whole 9 yards.

I admit that I am pretty tough on rims due to my large size - 6'7" and
300ish currently. And I've been through quite a few rear wheels over the
years. But throughout it's life on my bike I've always had 38mm LoupLoup
Pass mostly inflated in the 50-60 psi range. I'm an experienced cyclist
that doesn't go running over potholes and off curbs. In other words I know
my rear wheel is a limiting factor and I try not to beat on it.

I had higher hopes for this rim due to it seeming to have a fairly robust
construction but I guess I was just too much for it. The shop was going to
get me a replacement build fairly cheaply, maybe a warranty rim, don't
know, but due to the difficulty of properly mounting Compass tires on it,
and a few blowoffs that I had, I declined to get another Weymouth. It's
more the tire mounting issue than anything, I have to really be careful
mounting my tires, which is pretty inconvenient when you're doing timed
events like brevets. I generally put about 10psi in them and go all the
way around the rim with my thumbs making sure the bead is properly seated,
before fully inflating them. The blowoff issue has not been a problem in
recent times as I learned to not pump the tires above 60 psi. If you pump
to max sidewall pressure which is 75psi on LoupLoups there tended to be
more problems with random blowoffs.

I was going to do a Pacenti Brevet, but, I have a pair of brand new 2nd gen
Pacenti PL23 hanging from my garage ceiling that I bought a few years back
when Kirk was selling them off. I think I will get both the front and back
done. Maybe not so great considering my personal heft but I talked with
Kirk personally about these rims and my size and he said he'd warranty them
if I had an issue. So, I will try them.

Just wanted to give some feedback on these to the group...

-Jim

[RBW] Re: Tubeless Maintenance

2017-11-06 Thread Jeremy Till
Most of my tubeless experience is with Stan's. It's definitely not a bad
idea to remove some of the build up, but I wouldn't consider it vital,
especially after only 4 months--I'd just add sealant at that point. Maybe
once a year or so? For mountain bikers who often slash their tires on
rocks, that might very well be "the life of the tire" so I'd imagine there
are those that never worry about it. I find scrubbing the inside of the
tire with a rag takes it off pretty easily.

Tires with thinner sidewalls (as probably preferred by most running
tubeless on this list) will often "weep" sealant through the sidewalls, at
least for some period after initial setup, after which the sealant seems to
fill up the little micro-pores and the tire will hold air longer--almost
like oil "seasoning" a cast iron pan. So at least some of the sealant
buildup on the inside of the tire might be useful in making it more
airtight.

[RBW] Re: 3-Speed MTBing Resources?

2017-11-06 Thread Jeremy Till
The thing about 3 speed hubs is that they're really designed for relatively
low torque applications, namely commuting in mostly flat cities. I wonder
about their longevity when they're exposed them to the kind of torques
involved with climbing a steep trail offroad. Jobst Brandt, king of
torque, didn't like older SA 3spds because they could pop out of gear under
load, potentially causing injury to the rider standing on the pedals:

http://yarchive.net/bike/sturmey_archer_hubs.html

I think the newer hubs with redesigned pawl system are less prone to do
that, but they're still not designed for high peak load applications. And
while they are probably better sealed than the old ones, I don't think they
are super well sealed compared to, say, a cartridge bearing freehub.

One other thing to consider is that, especially with a brand new IGH, there
is noticeable friction in the other-than-direct gears. In the low gear
especially, this is apparent as vibration in the pedals. I know that with
your brain injury, Patrick, you can be sensitive to sounds and smells, do
you think this type of vibration might be problematic?

All of this is theoretical coming from me, since I haven't tried it. I
think there was an IGH forum on MTBR, which may have people who have
actually tried it. It's been many years since I lurked over there though.

[RBW] Anyone know about cycling Death Valley

I rode there last week, from Badwater Basin to the peak of White Mountain.
Cached water along the way at a few different spots. Temperature range was
28-99 degrees.

Here’s a link to the Strava file: https://www.strava.com/activities/1253071477

Scotty’s Castle is closed due to crazy flooding, unfortunately. However, I
loved the route we took to get to White. We didn’t see any cars between mile 40
and mile 165. Great place to (carefully) have a bike adventure.

[RBW] Re: 3-Speed MTBing Resources?

2017-11-06 Thread lconley
My 1st fifty miler (getting the Cycling Merit Badge in the Boy Scouts) in
1969 was on a Schwinn Stingray with a Bendix 2 speed kickback hub.
Extremely reliable hub, the modern SA, kind of iffy. I have had two of the
modern SA hubs and they both clicked (clunked?) loudly when under any sort
heavy braking - downhill usually (I live in Florida so downhill is a
relative term). I never put a lot of miles on either, but they were not
confidence inspiring. The Bendix survived many, many miles of use including
twice daily, heavily loaded newspaper delivery for three years (~150
customers) without a peep.

Sturmey Archer's 2-speed hub with built-in coaster brake?
http://www.sturmey-archer.com/en/products/detail/s2c-silver

Back pedaling slightly shifts gear, back pedaling more applies brake.
Doesn't require cables!
I have test ridden it for only a very short distance, so I can't tell about
its effectiveness or durability.

[RBW] Anyone know about cycling Death Valley

2017-11-06 Thread Christopher Cote
I spent a week there in 2011, but on a motorcycle, not a bicycle. I'll echo
previous sentiments about the scale of the place. It's huge. And steep. You're
either climbing or descending one side or the other at all times. Check the NPS
road reports they put out each morning. Weather can be dramatic.

I think I liked the Panamint range side, and Panamint valley the best. Panamint
springs campground is a good base camp. Ballarat is pretty cool. There's old
mining cabins outside the park you can stay in. No power or water, though.

Scotty's Castle is worth a visit.

Have fun and post some pics when you get back!

I think you're getting onto something there -- 3 speed MTN bikes could be
the new single speed MTN bikes. Now, which company would take that on? A
super durable, lightweight 3sp. IG hub and stealthy shifter (no doubt
incorporating some sort of dropper seat post button as well). I vote for
Sram to do it -- and wait for it ... *wirelessly* as well (!) (Cue the
groans and gasps from the peanut gallery).

Cool idea though.

[RBW] 3-Speed MTBing Resources?

2017-11-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
Patrick of the Moore asked with cocked eyebrow on a tilted head, me squintin’
back at ‘im, puffin’ me pipe: “I'm curious as to your motive.” Grin.

Hearty simplicity with just enough practicality added to make it work. Grin. My
general approach to things is to try (for a minimum of three months) the
simplest way to do something. Doing so ALWAYS teaches me a LOT and often the
lessons are often utterly counter to anything I thought I knew. I’ve spoken
about doing this with going barefoot (where I “discovered” the idea), and then
floor living. A more recent iteration of it is with writing. My first drafts
are now all cursive on 5” x 7” notebooks, in pencil, holding it completely
differently from what is taught (but as is shown in paintings almost
universally from 300ish to 1,800s) and sharpened to a 1.1mm lead. Without going
into the mind numbing details, this promotes flow of thought (and gets me past
my brain injury challenges of focus and losing train of thought), whereas
typing and print are very staccato.

Since I’ve had the Quickbeam and shifted the Hunqapillar to a 1x9 38t x 12-36t
with manual bailout chainring of 24t (no front DR), I have often had the
thought “I only need rather wide spaced gearing, 3-5 gears, with a really low
gearing option for bikepacking. The QB is my “as simple as it can be done” bike
and it continues to teach me a LOT. Grin. I’m now striving to apply that to the
Hunqapillar.

>From what I’ve read the new Taiwanese Sturmey Archers are vast improvements
>over the post 1950’s British made mediocre ones. They are sealed (at least
>more so) than what you rode.

Why IGH? Weatherproofing. Why 3? Heartiest, beefiest around. Greatest gear
range per gear, giving a 2 x 3 drive the same or slightly greater range as my
current 2x cassette.

With abandon,
Patrick
