I have several Shimano "Tourney" 7 speed freewheels in a drawer that I must

[RBW] Re: Minimalist cycling shoe article.

2017-11-19 Thread lum gim fong
I felt the article was akin to Grant's articles about biking hacks, like
fixing up sagging Brooks saddles, etc.

Also, It mentioned a minimalist shoe that works well for biking, and
mentioned a type of pedal that a recent thread here discussed. So I thought
it would be of interest to some here.

I am interested in trying minimalist shoes because I have had two surgeries
to remove arthritic growths on tops of both of my big toe joints right
where dress shoes rub me when I walk. Not saying that was the cause, but
must not have been good for me.
These days it is hard to find a dress shoe that doesn't break over the big
toe joint painfully, and is also wide enough for my wide foot. And I am not
wanting to hurt my feet anymore by walking in uncomfortable shoes.

So I found a few minimalist dress shoes that I hope will not torment my
feet like conventional dress shoes do. I am going to try the Lems Nine2Five
shoe and see if that makes my feet go hh :)

Re: [RBW] Hubbahhubbah build question - Motolite brakes?

2017-11-19 Thread Jeremy Tavan
Thanks David and Igor for the input. The solution, as it turned out, was
just a little more brute force and ignorance. The fit of the rear dropouts
on the rear hub was tight, and I hadn't gotten it fully seated. A little
extra oomph and now things look like they'll line up.

David, that build looks reasonably close to what I'm doing on mine. Looks
nice! I found that I had to use the skinnier of the two concave washers on
the pad side of the brakes to make the wide rims fit, but it didn't require
actual removal of any of the hardware.

I'll get this thing buttoned up and take some pictures when I can. Just
need to mount some tires, grips, pedals, racks, and lights.

Re: [RBW] Hubbahhubbah build question - Motolite brakes?

2017-11-19 Thread David Sprunger
Jeremy,

I used Motolite brakes on a Hubbahhubbah, and the fit was fussy. I had to
remove some of the adjustment hardware behind the pads in order to have
more space to play with. In the end, the brakes are great stoppers with
lots of control.

You can see some pictures here:
https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21ABpyOee9cmpDYo8=03365C725CAF2D0E=3365C725CAF2D0E%2156693=3365C725CAF2D0E%2156689=OneUp
There's one toward the end that shows one side of the rear brake with the
stripped hardware.

That build makes me kind of wish they'd had a small orange in stock when my
wife told me to buy a tandem frame and build it up. Super bold colors! Mine
is a much more sedate blue with black accents. Ahh well.

Regardless, while Motolites may have worked for that frame (and at least
one other I've seen, I think?), I really don't think the fit is working on
mine. I guess I could swap in some canti brakes and short-pull levers and
see if I have better luck getting those adjusted.

2017-11-19 Thread Patrick Moore
Good for Kalamazoo.

You say you dislike bike lanes. I'm not disagreeing (yet, anyway) but I'm
curious what problems you have in mind. I've used both here in ABQ, NM and
can't say that I've found one worse or better than the other -- though
there are certainly some bike lanes that are less than ideal, as when a
narrow bike lane is adjacent to a multilane cross town blvd where cars go
50. Is this the sort of bike lane you have in mind?

I would guess that bike lanes, or dedicated bike paths closed to auto
traffic, but these would be hard to fund, are the only reasonably available
bike routes when it comes to cross-town routes in relatively sparsely
populated western cities?

People will wear whatever they wish, the more the merrier ! People use the
idea of "this is how man was" and "this is how man evolved" therefore "this is

it goods or a way of life.

These dayze we have the same ol' isms in "new clothing". Like a game of ping
pong, back and forth . the game of polarities the same ol'good vs. evil
theme. This is good, that is bad, I'm right and you'e wrong blah blah

why" is true, but no one can deny or claim for themselves the absolute fact
that Truth Itself exists, and any subsequent side-taking is impossibly futile
because Truth is all there is.

Re: [RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for minimalist dress and biking shoes?

2017-11-19 Thread Patrick Moore
Understood; thanks.

My brother tried those "feets gloves" and injured his feet, though he
admits that was because he ran to much too soon in them, but he's back to
regular running shoes, albeit not ones that are too structured.

I was a toddler in the '50s and my brother was a toddler in the early '60s,
and I recall the Buster Brown ankle laceups that were meant to form the wee
foot, or at least support it, which shows how medical science goes in and
out of fashion. Still, I don't see any way that I or my siblings have
suffered from excessively restrained feet as we got older. I recall being
shocked as a boy when I heard how fashionable women would get their little
toes cut off to fit their feet into the extremely pointed spike heels
fashionable back about the time of JFK and Sputnik.

Aside, anecdote, humorous, main thread, not germane to, dismiss if you
like: I bought a pair of cheap Wellingtons in college that I was very fond
of, since they made me look like a hot orangoutang on horseback (just
kidding you, Patrick). A friend and I went on a day in/day back out hike in
the mountains in middle Ca, forget the park -- Redwood Nat'l Park? -- and I
wore the boots over cheap cotton socks. Not comfortable! I still wear
cowboy boots when not wearing my boat shoes, but not to hike in, and yes,
for looks (but they are comfortable for standing around in).

What if I want to look like a noble orangutang on horseback? Or a hot noble?

Seriously, Patrick, people have walked the length of continents on heels. I
agree that there are extremes of style and that these are probably
injurious, but heels have been around too long to allow me to dismiss them
because a few people say they're bad. After all, the argument from

[RBW] Hubbahhubbah build question - Motolite brakes?

2017-11-19 Thread Jeremy Tavan
I'm building up a Hubbahhubbah, and everything has gone very smoothly (at
least after getting the defective eccentric bottom bracket replaced), even
though this is my first full-bike build from parts. I have run in to one
challenge, however, involving the brakes. I've picked Paul Motolite
linear-pull brakes and Velocity Cliffhanger rims, and the front brakes
installed and adjusted very easily, with maybe 2-3mm of extra travel
available to move the pad holders downwards before running out of lever
arm. On the rear, however, even with the pad holders all the way down I
cannot get the pads to land square on the brake track. It feels like the
rear brake braze-ons are positioned slightly too high on the seatstays.
Should I just live with it, with the brake pads hitting the rim at an angle
right at the top of the brake track? Replace the wheels with 29ers? Tear
the whole thing apart and have the braze-ons moved and the whole thing
repainted? Try different brakes? I'm kind of bummed about this. Advice
welcome!

Well, remember that what works for one will not always work for or be true
for another. My bike shoes feel fine, though I do have narrow feet, and
though I did go through a weeding process to leave behind only the shoes
that are comfortable -- comfortable in that you don't think about them when
you ride; I ride about 30 miles max, of course, but I don't hear Jan or
others complaining about their feet.

And shoes and boots with heels have been around for centuries if not
millennia, so, invoking the principle, *quod ab omnibus et semper et ubique*,
even if referring only to Europeans, indicates that with your typical shoe
you have something that may not be entirely irrational.

And to follow up with another argument, if people can cross continents
comfortably in good boots

[RBW] Protovelo build

2017-11-19 Thread lconley
I braved the elements (70 deg F and clear skies) and took my Protovelo for
a ride this morning, now that it is reassembled.

Frame: Protovelo with Appaloosa headbadge.
Wheels; Built by Peter White. 700c 48 spoke. Velocity Chukker rims. Phil
Wood 9 speed cassette rear hub. Schmidt front dynohub, 50mm Big Bens.
Rivet Loveland saddle on Thompson zero offset 26.8 two bolt seatpost.
Sugino RD2 Crank (48T) on VO 103mm BB - Phil Wood platform pedals with
Christophe half clips
Nitto Jitensha handlebars on Nitto dirtdrop stem with Rustines grips.
9 speed friction, Microshift rear derailleur, Grand Compe downtube shifter,
Shimano 11 (12?) - 34 cassette
B Eyc headlight and saddle rail mounted Toplight Line Small tail light.
Tektro R556 brakes with Tektro Mountain levers
Detroit Cargo leather handlebar bag

The bike originally had Bosco Bullmoose handle bars, but they made me feel
cramped. This was the only complete bike that I have ever bought from
Rivendell, all the others were bare frames. I think only the headset,
tires, rear derailleur and chain remain from what came on the bike at this
point. I will probably switch the seatpost out for a Nitto S83, I could
still use some more distance from the handlebars. Rides very, very smooth -
gotta love that long wheelbase. The 50 mm tires only have about 1/4 inch or
so clearance from the brakes. The forks seem very flexible, any sort of a
big bump and I can hear the front tire barely touch. Not sure about the
downtube shifter, I like the simplicity and the clean handlebars, but I
haven't gotten used to the shifting yet.

Re: [RBW] Re: Minimalist cycling shoe article.

2017-11-19 Thread Deacon Patrick
Walking with a healthy gate involves a gentle heel first landing/roll onto a
fully loaded foot which includes a dynamically moving arch helping support our
weight as we pass over it to the next step. This does not apply to cycling.
Running with a healthy gate involves a soft forefoot landing that activates and
loads the foots windlass mechanism (the arch is part of this), as well as
loading the springs of our legs, returning that energy through each step. This
also does not apply to cycling.

Cycling is far more akin to doing squats in terms of how the foot functions: a
static position pushing down to accomplish work. For the foot to function as
fully as possible it should have a solid platform to push down on, and one both
long and wide enough to fully support the foot’s natural splay and arch
functions. This is why cycling shoes are a rigid platform (which makes sense)
but they fail to generally be wide enough. With soft soled shoes, pedal size
and shape come into play, and a longer pedal allows for the full arch of the
foot to engage properly with each “squat.”

With abandon,
Patrick

Hi Bruce,

I think they are mixing form and function. The idea behind this is that
you are supposed to have a minimalist heal on the shoe but this applies to
walking and running, not cycling which has a another criteria. The rigid
sole for cycling is there for a reason and is it is related to cycling, not
how you walk. I think an argument can be made for foot health that a
cycling shoe should be made wider but I am not a podiatrist.

selections of footwear. If I would buy this shoes, it would fit me only
because the box area is already wide and I do not have to check if it is
wide enough for my feet to fit like a typical shoe but it is still not wide
enough in a sense that it fits me well, but according to there philosophy,
the box should actually be WIDER since my toes should be splayed out
further.

[RBW] Re: Minimalist cycling shoe article.

2017-11-19 Thread Deacon Patrick
Platform pedals and a minimalist shoe that fits. Done. No hacking required. But
the point that cycling shoes are NOT foot shaped (unless you’ve deformed your
feet in modern footbinders to make them last-shaped, sardonic grin), so if your
foot is foot shaped, cycling shoes will fell horrible, even in the “right” size.

Before a decent minimalist option came out for winter boots, I hacked the heel
off some Sorels (far harder to do than I’d have thought). It was usable, and I
have them as back up if needed, but far, far from ideal.

I have 2 pair and will be getting more. They are great. I don't cycle in

cycling - no, I can't imagine riding in them for any appreciable distance.
Get a pair for comfort and every day wear, they are fabulous for that,
but I advise something else for cycling.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders use for minimalist dress and biking shoes?

2017-11-19 Thread Garth
Patrick of the Moore's , just think of "minimal" shoes as a generalized term
for shoes with no drop from heel to toe and little to no padding. No drop
meaning no elevated heel. Sometimes confused with the term "barefoot" style
shoes which only infers the most minimal shoes of all which are supposed to be
"like" walking barefoot. The term like all words only serves as a symbol, a
guidepost of sorts, to those shoes that allow you to feel the ground as much as
possible without any artifical structure or pads, "like" walking barefoot.
Nothing compares to barefoot of course, it's just a shoe term.

You know how it feels walking around in socks , yes ? Now picture gluing on a
2mm layer of flexible rubber on them that would be the closest sort of
footwear to walking barefoot. Few "minimal" style shoes offer such feel as they
add padding of some sort which numbs the feel of the ground. Walking barefoot
and landing naturally forefoot you don't need padding of any kind because it
involves the whole body.

The market of "minimal" shoes seems like a 'tweener between raised heel heavily
padded and "barefoot" style shoes, like a way to get used to zero drop while
still being padded to varying degrees.

Again, these are generalizations and generally very general like all
generalizations .☺

- - -

All that said, If I must wear shoes I wear some Softstar RunAmoc Original shoes
with the 2mm street soles which look at good as they feel and you can customize
them in all sorts of leathers and different soles. These feel like wearing
socks with 2mm rubber glued on. This particlar version fits my higher arched
feet really well as they are taller and only lace around the very top. Very
clean look and look great everywhere from sport to formal.

I also wear Merrell Vapor Glove 2, also like wearing a sock but more sloppy on
my feet around the toes. The all black ones could pass as dress casual easily.

Re: [RBW] Minimalist cycling shoe article.

2017-11-19 Thread Lee Legrand
I do not think I would destroy a shoe for a wider box. Cycling shoes are
pretty expensive up front and cutting them like that only means I will have
to replace them sooner. The other thing is that cycling is different than
walking but he is applying foot health for walking unto cycling and cycling
probably uses different foot muscles. I plan to get a wide box toe gym
shoe one day but I do not think that translate to cycling since those are
different activities. Like a football player doing powerlifting to become
more explosive. You have to train the movement to get better at it, not do
something else in hopes that it offers benefit to somethings else.
