I've had the old Suntour Power Ratchet thumbies and they're fabulous. I think
they would be great as inside-the-bar shifters like Riv specs on Clems.

2017-12-04 Thread dougP
Bear in mind these are prototypes only, probably to check all the fiddly
details before going into production. I would expect the finish to be up
to the usual Rivendell standards & present well on a nice bike. As to the
aesthetic, well, if you liked the originals (which I do), these will look
great to you. If you dislike the old ones, you won't like these. There's
certainly no shortage of choices in shift levers.

As to 3 yucks in a row, wouldn't that be Larry, Moe & Curly? ("Nyuk, nyuk,
nyuk")

I agree that based just on aesthetics, they'd be weird on the downtube.
I'm going to pre-emptively DISAPPROVE of anybody that runs Silver 2s on the

While it's kinda cool to have shifters that can function in several
different positions on the bike, there will inevitably be compromises. With
that ergonomic curve, I would tend to agree that the shape of the prototype
is more suitable to bar end and thumby duties, and could look a little
awkward and stubby and maybe slightly distracting on a down tube--sorta
like an Ultegra bar end in that position might. And the blug post alluded
to the fact that the dt slot was probably third of three in terms of
optimum. Quote: *It’ll work fine on the downtube and better (than ever,

I found the Silvers as bar ends a little long but fine; never tried them as
thumbies. Also had no problem shifting ten speeds with them, back when I
briefly tried a cassette with so many choices.

I have a set of the Suntour XC's, they sure are nice. A worthy revival in
this day and age. I think they might look groovy on the IRD stem shifter

It's a project - as I have already stated - that has had a long gestation

neither the time nor place to declare it YUCK. If you want to suggest
improvements to the design, I presume "I wish the barrel were bigger" would be

So you want a Silver shifter that you like the looks of to have a bigger barrel
like the Dia-Compe you don't like the looks of, which had nothing to do with
the new shifter which is "yuck." No, I don't get it. Buy a shifter you like

In order to shift my chain to the largest cog of a 10 Speed cassette using a
Silver shifter, I need to move the lever almost parallel to the down tube.
Enlarging the barrel, like the VO version of the DiaCompe shifter, requires
less travel of the lever. I happen to like the look of the Silver shifter
better than the VO version and if it was made with a larger barrel, I’d buy it
and use it. Does that make a lick of sense to you now?

Silvers work fine with 9-speed, and 10 would be the same throw. They're
probably not great for 11, but I doubt there's any perceptible market for a
friction 11-speed shifter. This criticism about barrel size doesn't make a lick

I bet it will work really well, because Silvers do and Riv cares, duh...
Plus, prototypes are prototypes. Design is iterative.

I might be talking out of my ass here, but I was also kinda thinking the
look of these shifters—besides taking a note from the old Suntours—could be
part of an evolution in Riv's design aesthetic... industrial/post-war
ridges/notches/grooves like the Appa fork and, Rosco graphics? Rodini
headtube. The Chocomoose bars have a rigid, less flowy shape to them... I'm
on board.

I just drove down a flat road with bike lanes at dusk, 10 min. after sunset.
Many cyclist ride this road after work around 5:30. Bright front and rear light
are gradually becoming the norm on this road. Flashing or not, I can see a
bright tail light from 1/2 mile or more. Today a couple of bikes had old school
dim rear light which couldn't be seen until a 100 ft away or so. As for
flashing vs steady, the Light & Motion Vibe is steady with a pulse, flash every
few seconds. That seems to be the best of both worlds (the downside is the USB
charged battery runs about 6 hours, recarge in 2 hrs). The Vibe does have auto
on/off which helpful for me-unless it's night I often forget!

Sheesh, we're all big boys and girls here, so someone expresses a "yucky"
view of the shifters that are not even in production and no spec known,
it's just an initial honest opinion, and you know what they say about
opinions ... we all got one.

So what !

Hey, we all have our own ideas about all sorts of things and how it could
be better. Sometimes we may say something, sometimes not, but we can't deny
that the thoughts exist and there is no use in condemning them as that
doesn't change that they exist. So what ?:-)

[RBW] Re: Univega

2017-12-04 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
That's a sweet looking mixte, Doug. I would say certainly worth a hundred
bucks, but out of season why not offer 70--they probably just want it out
the door. Very likely built by Miyata. Lugged, nice red paint, double
eyelets in back, and the much-preferred middle seat stay mounted rear
brake. Not sure if it is a 27", if so and you have a set of 700c around,
you'll get some more fender and tire clearance. Otherwise, Pasela makes a
27" equivalent to a 32mm in width. This will make a sporty, around town and
medium distance rides bike that, if it can manage 35mm tires with fenders,
will be 86.4% of a Cheviot.

Re: [RBW] Re: Silver Shifter 2 project revived

2017-12-04 Thread Reed Kennedy
If you need more cable pull it has already been innovated:
https://velo-orange.com/collections/shifters/products/dia-compe-ene-11s-dt-shifters

I figure that a bigger barrel will just make the shifter even more
sensitive to small movement, though. I've had good luck with Silver V1s and
Simplex retrofrictions shifting 10 speed, so I'll stick with those. If we
ever run out of both of those, then I'll buy these:
https://velo-orange.com/collections/shifters/products/dia-compe-ene-w-dt-shifters

In other words, there are lots of good friction downtube options and fewer
friction thumb options. I may like downtube better personally, but it makes
sense to me that Riv is making the harder to get thing rather than the
easier to get thing.

Got to check out the prototype Silver V2 when I dropped by the other day.
It's looking good!

[RBW] Re: Silver Shifter 2 project revived

2017-12-04 Thread Bill Lindsay
I think the point Joe is making is that many of us have been watching this
project with interest and maybe some anticipation. Some of us are fond of
Rivendell Bicycle Works and would like to see them succeed. When news
comes out that a previously shelved project is rising from the dead, people
are bound to be a little excited. Instead of letting them have their fun,
somebody chimes in "Yuck, that product that doesn't exist is bad, just as
bad as the current product it will replace". I think Joe doesn't see the
constructive value in throwing a turd in the punch bowl. That's all.
Maybe you thought you were helping Rivendell out by saving them from making
a bad product, or maybe you thought you were helping us out, (since we
don't know how to decide for ourselves) by informing us that this product
that doesn't exist yet, is objectively bad. If everybody posted a negative
comment about every product that we don't want to buy, that would be a lot
of traffic on this board. Say something nice or

If you are sincerely in the market for friction thumb shifters for 10-speed
drivetrains, you could have conveyed exactly the same idea with "I hope
Rivendell has anticipated the rise of 10+ speed drivetrains and designed
the right side shifter to pull enough cable". Exactly the same comment,
packaged nicer than "Yuck". You state that it's too small, but it's not
clear to me how you got that information. Are you in on the design? Or
are you just guessing based on how it looks? What should the diameter be?

This was one the reasons I hesitated. The other being I'd wear out the

Carradice roll bag in black to blend in with my black saddle and other

IME these work well with up to 10speed in the cable pull department, but I
haven't tried 11sp. I've used them with multiple bikes, derailers, and
cassettes/chains including 8, 9, and 10s, and combinations that don't
technically match, like a 9s rear derailer with 10s cassette or vice versa.
all as DT shifters. I have never used them as thumbies. excited to see the

The link is to a very small Univega mixte. The title misleadingly calls

2017-12-04 Thread Deacon Patrick
As someone who is sensitive to flashing lights the latest “safety” trend of any
and all workers (regardless of if they are working or not) having multiple,
intense, strobing LED lights is horrible. That’s GOT to be a target fixation
issue, plus the whole “we have to be more visible to be visible” nonsense
surely creates drivers who don’t pay attention to anything because everything
is noisy. Bewsides, strobing lights are known to cause seizures. That can’t be
good for anyone’s safety.

looks better and is more structurally solid. id be inclined to find one of

Re: [RBW] Re: Up Your Vis Game

2017-12-04 Thread Eric Norris
Daniel:

I’m not sure I agree that flashing lights are such a bad idea, but I *do* agree
that the super-bright lights that the cycling industry has been rolling out in
recent years can be a hazard. However, in my experience, it’s not a distant,
super-bright taillight that causes problems, but the light on the bike right in
front of you. Some of these lights are so bright that the limit the following
rider’s view to nothing but a red haze. (Note: Don’t try to tell these riders
that their lights are too bright—convinced that brighter is better and
brightest is best, they invariably react badly to my suggestion that they’re
causing problems from anyone behind them.)

I agree generally with Jan that super-bright rear lights aren’t necessary. As I
asked a friend on a recent ride, “Do you really need to be visible to a car
that’s five miles behind you?” My hope is that there will be a moderation in
coming years as riders go back to slightly less bright lights with longer run
times. I don’t agree that reflective gear is bad.

One hopeful step in the illumination arms race is Portland Design Works’ new
“Daybot” taillight, which offers a choice of daytime (100 lumens) and nighttime
(20 lumens) brightness levels. The latter is adequately visible, but in a
follower-friendly way. Their “Fenderbot” is also notable for being bright
enough without being too bright. As a randonneur who occasionally rides through
the night, I appreciate the long run times offered by slightly less bright
lights, since a taillight that has run out of batteries doesn’t do a bit of
good.

Regarding the Toplight—I have one, and it’s great, but from even a short
distance it’s going to look pretty much like a smaller light. Depth perception
is hard to gauge when you have just one point of light. The best solution would
be two taillights even a short distance apart, but that’s hard to do on most
bikes.

FWIW, Lee Mitchell, a famed sag driver here in Northern California who spent
thousands of hours over many decades following cyclists in the dark, once said
in an online discussion of this topic that the most valuable piece of nighttime
gear in his opinion is reflective ankle bands. Their motion attracts attention
and helps identify you as a bicycle.

FWIW, I swore off using an SUN CR-18's after I ended up with 3 sets of
wheels built with the defective (slightly too large) rims. Getting any tire
on or off was chore. Roadside flats were a nightmare.

I once had a Nexus 8 Speed internal hubbed whee/tire l pick up a staple,
and go flat. I was commuting home from work, at night, in January, in a 36
degree "light rain".

The incident forever changed my view CR18 rims and the "simplicity" of
internal hubs. I would bet serious $$$ its the rims. I only use Open Pro
rims now and have had no issue mounting any 700c tire event the dreaded
Challenge Parigi Roubaix.

[RBW] Re: Up Your Vis Game

2017-12-04 Thread ascpgh
Reflectors/tape have limitations. Fog disrupts the whole thing.

In my uniform days I had a couple of contact team mechanics overnight along
a stretch of state highway in Louisiana have a really close call wearing
hi-viz vests of almost entirely of 3M reflective material over their
camouflage uniforms, per regs. A truck had buzzed them so closely that they
thought the driver was drunk and they called in the event. They couldn't
imagine their near invisibility in the fog wearing the mandated vests.

Driving up to them in the less than obstructive fog, I saw their shapes and
the color of their vests before any reflectors registered. I had them put
chem lights on they vests and their visibility in the fog improved tenfold.
That small amount of produced light, even diffused by the fog, was visible
well before the reflector tape or their silhouette shapes.

Reflectors are not second tier, just know their limitations and have a
combination of things working for your visibility. Try it yourself with a
flashlight next time it's foggy.

[RBW] Re: Up Your Vis Game

2017-12-04 Thread Daniel M
Jan’s opinions about visibility make about as much sense to me as Grant’s
notions about diet. Some nuggets of wisdom in both cases, with extreme
conclusions drawn that I disagree with in the end. Jan dismissed reflective
tire sidewalls as ineffective out of hand and thinks a single red dot, which
gives other road users no depth perception whatsoever, is preferable to
additional reflective surfaces. He mentions the very real effect of target
fixation on bicycles and police cars, without calling the strobing lights into
question in both cases.

I feel very strongly that using flashing lights on bicycles after dark is a
really really bad idea. A bllinding, strobing dot in the distance dazzles other
drivers and cyclists, gives no depth perception, and makes it harder to see
anything other than the flashing light itself. A solid rear light that
illuminates a larger area like the Toplight Line Plus, etc, coupled with
reflective leg bands, vest/harness, reflective tire sidewalls and/or reflective
tape on the fenders, gives other road users a steady image which conveys the
size and distance to the bike and rider they are passing or overtaking without
dazzling them with a strobing light show.

I have one & use it frequently,  my only complaint is the Velcro straps;
although quick & easy, sometimes I need to switch to a bike with no good
handlebar mounting position. The Velcro straps mean it can't be mounted easily
to the back of my B-17s, so it doesn't get used as much as I'd like and is
rotated between fewer bikes.

It’s kinda funny that when I first discovered Riv it was while I was in the
process of “Rivifying” my old rigid MTB, which was my only bike at the time and
no longer comfortable, but before I even knew what it really meant to Rivify an
old frame. At the time they were clearing out the remaining Simpleones and I
recall being very tempted by them but I had reservations about the cost and
ordering anything sight unseen. I was also still completely unsure about what
I really wanted or needed from my bike in both utility and fit. Years later
I’ve come full circle to realize this is the exact kind of biking I now seem to
prefer for most of my riding.

Re: [RBW] Re: Front rack ID on this Atlantis?

2017-12-04 Thread Tim Gavin
Bin Chen-

It's a Nitto rack, so it will be of the highest quality. It will carry WAY
more than the conservative rating from Nitto.

If your front panniers can hang on the middle rail of the 35F (and you can
adjust the lower attachment point to hit the lower rail), then I think your
front load would still be pretty near the center of the hub. Perfect for
handling. I know my Ortlieb Sport Packers could be adjusted to fit, maybe
even Ortlieb's full size rear panniers.

I did some on-road touring with panniers on a Nitto MT-Campee F20 front
rack (the one with removeable low-rider frames). In my opinion, the load
was so low that the front handling was over-stable (resistant to turn).
Great for no-hands riding but it kinda fought me in turns.

I would also consider the Nitto 34F aka Rivendell Big Front rack. Both the
35F and 34F have a big top platform and multiple cross rails. The 34F does
get in the way of wheel removal; you have to remove the QR skewer to clear
the lowest rails.

[RBW] Re: Lessons in Singlespeeding

2017-12-04 Thread Arthur Mayfield
After several configurations, I finally settled on 1x9 for my Sam, then
went from bar end shifters to stem to DT (with a clamp on mount). I
definitely shift less often with the DT than before. The difference between
riding a derailleur bike in one gear and a SS, though, is how much more
torque you can exert on the SS with its thicker rings and heavier chain. I
want a true SS and will probably be an immediate pre-order(er) when/if RBW
brings back a SS frame.

[RBW] Re: Lessons in Singlespeeding

2017-12-04 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Lum,
Your experience with DT is similar to how I happened upon the pleasures of ss
riding.

Combine a tall frame + low DT levers + laziness + an old 12 spd that
effectively acted as a 5 speed: 40/52 double crank where I just stayed in the
40 + a worn 6th cog in the back.

I ended up just staying in 40/15 or 40/17 for several rides... it hit me one
night after heading back home that I hadn’t shifted the entire return trip and
on one of the hillier routes I take. I realized right there that ss was both
doable and enjoyable.
