I just bought one. I once had a Avenir Metro bar bag that was fantastic. Bar
bags can be fun.
It will help me go fast my Bleriot.

[RBW] Sackvilke bartube questions?

2018-01-10 Thread Joe Bernard
1. Don't know.

2. It holds its shape.

3. Kinda floppy against the headtube if you don't use something on the side
rings to steady it. Not a huge deal to me, it's never even occurred to me to
use those rings. Great bag.

[RBW] Sackvilke bartube questions?

2018-01-10 Thread lum gim fong
1. Water resistant, or does everything get wet inside when it rains?

2. It's wide. Does it hold its shape or sag down on ends away from bar
attachment points?
In other words does it keep its tube shape well?

3. Fully loaded does the weight attached to the bar make the front end floppy?

Thanks for the info.

[RBW] Re: Matt from Crust - PLP Talks

2018-01-10 Thread drew
I agree. This is a really good counterpoint to the sceney, super hip stuff on
instagram. It’s nice to hear him talk and just be a down to earth normal guy.
I’ve been liking what he’s making, but also have been a little dubious about
supporting what seemed sorta like an inside joke that I wasn’t in on. I’m much
more likely to be a customer now.

As a side note, I really appreciate that riv has built a idiosyncratic brand
without ever feeling like they are trying or especially not trying to be cool.
It makes things feel more inclusive.

[RBW] Re: Good New/Bad News on my repaired Atlantis

2018-01-10 Thread Philip Williamson
Just thinking of the squat Testors bottles makes me happy. Drug stores used
to carry a wide array of colors in the 70s, and I'd look at all the colors
before buying a Charleston Chew for my walk home from school. Back when
kids walked home from school. I may get an Atlantis color bottle as a
talisman, even though I don't have the bike. The 2004 Quickbeam green is an
exact match for Plasti-kote "shamrock green" though.

I setup my Ram bike with a Mark's rack up front--yes with P-clamps, but it
did the job just fine. I rode 2 600k brevets on it and it held up fine,
and I had to carry a good amount up front and in my saddlebag.

[RBW] Re: My new Cheviot

2018-01-10 Thread Joe Bernard
Palmer: I can hear the chain a bit, but I'm used to derailers so I'm not sure
what would be noisy to you. It's a stiff tension if that's what you mean: I
pounded over some speedbumps in the parking area and didn't get a lot of
tensioner bounce like you would with a rear derailer.

Eric: I don't know Grant's answer to the braze-ons question, but my guess is
it's to accommodate different racks on that super-long rear triangle. I
mocked-fitted my Nitto Big Rack and it lined up with the top eyelet on the
dropout, but I could see someone using the one up the seatstay for a more
forward mounting of an R14 saddlebag support. That location might be a
necessity for any rack on the gigantic 60cm frame.

CT: The Fattys are 650B x 41, with a good amount of room left under the
calipers for fenders.

see how the fenders fit. I saw a Cheviot at FFD this past fall and the

Re: [RBW] My new Cheviot

2018-01-10 Thread Eric Norris
Nice bike, Joe!

What’s the purpose of the third braze-on on the rear dropouts? One for a fender
strut, one for a rack, plus ... ??

I ask in part because my two Alex Singers, which were purpose-built to accept
both fenders and rear racks, do this with *one* braze-on and a clever bolt that
does double duty.

[RBW] My new Cheviot

2018-01-10 Thread Palmer
Hi Joe.
What a tremendous bike. Does it ride quietly with the tensioner? I usually like
a ss without tensioner for quiet riding. I am considering a 3 ring by 1 cog
with front derailler shifting only and a tensioner. As long as it is quiet,
that is.

[RBW] Re: FS: Riv Road Stnd-56cm-complete bike

2018-01-10 Thread WETH
Tom,

Thanks for asking.

Yes, I still run the inverted albastache bars. They work well on this frame
which is too small for me. Sorry I haven't tried them the normal way, yet. I
still don't ride the bike as much as I feel I should. I should sell it to
someone who would use it more, but it is such a beautiful frame.

I am also considering trying the inverted albastache bars on my Cheviot in
place of albatross bars. I ride a great deal with my hands on the curves. I
installed Dia Compe levers that follow the bar's curve and give me quick access
to the brakes. https://flic.kr/p/MX1Vwv However there is much lateral play in
the levers which I don't like. So I am considering the albastaches with road
brake levers. Maybe when I do my spring tune up. I find fun in
experimentation!

All the best,
Erl

[RBW] My new Cheviot

2018-01-10 Thread Joe Bernard
I interrupt my recent hiatus because A. It seemed stupid, B. I promised I would
show off my new Cheviot, and C. Maybe this will serve as encouragement for
anyone on the fence about a shiney new Riv to take the jump. Apologies for the
lousy indoor shots, I finally got the build finished and just did some laps
around the block after sunset. I'll had a sunny outdoor album to this thread
soon.

RBW Blue Cheviot 55cm.
Nitto stem and Choco bars.
Stock seatpost and my trusty Brooks B17 ti saddle.
Tektro R559 brakes and those curvy Tektro levers Riv sells (the copy mentions
that they have kind of a 'brake from the hoods' position unusual for mtb
levers, and this is immediately noticeable. Very nice levers).
Ergon grips, German mirror.
Velocity Synergy 650B wheelset from a listmember, LX rear, some kinda Shimano
dynohub front, some kinda B light from another member (thanks, members!)
Fatty Rumpkin tires with the lovely (and apparently accidental) red-ish brown
sidewalls. Trivia: the blue label on the tires looks nifty on the blue frame.
Sweet!
17t single cog located with two Gear Clamps, Paul Melvin tensioner.
Sugini Quickbeam-ish double, 40-26.
8-speed chain..don't use 9-speed on this setup, it fits too tight on the single
cog.
MKS Sylvan Touring pedals.

Verdict: It's fantastic! Of course this is an extremely limited first
impression, but it feels light and nimble like other Riv road-ish bikes I've
owned. My snap judgment is more Hilsen than Appaloosa, but that could be my
brain biasing towards looking at road brakes whole I'm pedaling..who knows??

My first impression of the 2-speed arrangement is that it's a singlespeed and
I'll probably never bother to stop and "shift". I purposely went this direction
because I've gotten maddenly out of shape the last couple years and riding
ebikes only exaserbated the problem, so I intend to grind out the big gear as
much as possible. But it's nice to know the granny is there if I really need
it. Fortunately I've just moved from the monster hill I was living on, or I
wouldn't have even attempted this.

The plan right now - especially since I also just bought Patrick the Deacon's
Haul-a-Day - is to keep this on the minimalist end with no racks. I have some
shorty wood fenders coming which is probably pushing the minimalist thing too
far for a lugged steel bike with full eyelets, but I saw that setup once on a
Specialized Langster fixie and for some reason I like the look.

[RBW] Re: Creaky Cranks, Cranky Cranker

2018-01-10 Thread Jeffrey Arita
Echoing lum gim fong: Check each and all components. Might be cracked.
Maybe even the bb shell/chainstay/downtube area. I had a creaking sound
coming from the bb area of my Surly Cross-Check. Finally found it:
Relatively loose square taper bb (Velo-Orange). Once I even had
about-to-be cracked chainring bolts on my mountain bike crankset! They
were those stupid-light alloy types (FSA-brand IIRC). Immediately replaced
with steel.

As far as loosening/tightening, lum gim fong I think is referring to this:

Shimano or Park make them. They work pretty well. BTW: I realize grease
is probably perfectly fine (I used it for almost all threads up til now)
but I recently switched to Finish Line Anti-Seize. I switched when I was
building up two Divide bikes (his and hers) early last year.the torque
range for the chainring bolts on the Shimano SLX crankset were quite high,
at least in my opinion. That being said I didn't want to have future
problems replacing the chainrings. Ooops, now I just jinxed myself!!!

Good luck!

I like the old adage "tighten it 'til it smokes".

But I isually snug very well and then do a last swoop in one movement so it
requires a little grunt at end. All smooth movements. Never jerk tight.
I get if as comfortably tight as poss without hurting me or the bike.

So far it's worked great on all components. I use multi tool and never a
cheater bar except when removing cassettes.

Did you tighten the ring bolts like car wheel lugs - back n forth? Not in a

Pedals need tightening?

Crank arms need a snug?

Creaking can come from other places, too. Hard 2 find sometimes.

[RBW] Re: Traveling with your bike

2018-01-10 Thread dougP
Ben:

Check all the airlines serving your destination but IMHO it's rare for an
airline to be competitive with ground service. On top of that, the
airlines are no more gentle with luggage than UPS & Fed Ex are with
packages. If you take your bike on the airplane, you also have to think
about transporting the big box from the airport to your destination.
Sounds trivial but it can be a hassle.

Check the current standards but the magic number for UPS & Fed Ex has been
130", combined length plus girth of your box. I have a hard case that
meets the requirement and my 58 cm Atlantis fits. I have to remove racks
but can still pack them in the box. A 62 might be a snug fit.

Depending on your needs at your destination, another solution is to track
down a rental bike. This option has grown in availability in the last few
years, and is worth considering if you are doing casual rides in one area.
Of course, if you are setting out on a long, multi day tour having your own
bike is priceless.

Have not used Bike Flights but they have gotten positive reviews on bike
forums.

Re: [RBW] Traveling with your bike

2018-01-10 Thread Eric Norris
Ben:

The last time I shipped a bike (via Bike Flights) I ran into a problem finding
a box small enough to avoid their oversize charge (which, to be fair, UPS and
FedEx also charge). Most of the empty bike boxes I found at bike shops were in
the “too big” category, and I had to hunt for a smaller one. The difference in
shipping cost was something like $80 for a small box and $400 for one only
slightly larger.

I say this because I was shipping a 57cm bike (with wheels) that barely fit
inside that box. You may have a problem getting your larger bike into a package
that doesn’t cost a fortune to ship.

One alternative, if you are going to a place near an Amtrak station, is to ship
the bike by train. Amtrak doesn’t charge for very large boxes—in fact, they
sell a box for use on their trains that only requires pedals to be taken off
and the handlebars rotated to be parallel with the frame. You get a very tall
bike in their box, and they’ll ship a bike across the US for about what Bike
Flights, UPS, or FedEx charges for a much smaller package. Shipping all the way
across the US took a few days the last time I sent a bike.

Yeah, I appreciate the ability of people to not take themselves too
seriously and just love bikes and what they're doing. Matt comes across
like a straight-up good guy. Agree on the Ultraromance interview as well.
Poppi seems like a much more down-to-earth person than I would have
imagined from Instagram (I don't get the whole appeal of Instagram anyway,
but maybe it's my age). Both of these guys are promoting the best things
about riding bikes and smart bike design and seem to be picking up the
torch that Rivendell lit long ago. The fact that someone can make bikes
that they (and their friends) want to ride and someone can make a "living"
bicycle touring is pretty amazing in and of itself.

Speaking of the towel rack, looking forward to seeing what this Crust shaka
bar is all about too.

Much like the mainstream industry cribbed from Grant/Riv, I suspect they'll
be doing the same from Matt/Crust.

I listened to it last night on the commute home. I laughed a lot. Matt seems
like a fun, interesting person, doing his thing and getting by. Definitely
interesting getting his take starting a independent bike business and also some

I also listened to the PLP talk with Benedict/Ultraromance. And I recommend
that too. Might start going back and listening to more of these PLP interviews.

And like Adam I own several Rivs and two Crust bikes. A Romancüer and a
Scapegoat. I disagree with Matt on the 'Goat, I think it's a very aesthetically
pleasing bike! And it's so much fun to ride. It's really like a extra-large BMX
and makes you feel like a kid again. A lot has been said about the Romancüer,
so i don't think I have anything new to say, other than I love mine. I can't
wait to get my hands on some damn leather bars for it though!

[RBW] FS: Black 52cm Clementine f/f/hs plus extras, $750

2018-01-10 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I wish I was not writing this ad, but unfortunately, I need to generate
some cash, and my Clementine, aka Clem Smith Jr. L-style, is one of the few
bikes I own with any real measurable resale value. It has been truly a joy
to ride, and if my circumstances were different, I would keep this bike
until the day I could no longer pull myself onto the saddle. However, since
losing my job last March, I have not needed it for commuting, and, being on
the third floor of a walk-up, I have been using a slightly lighter town
bike most days. Also, I hit a giant pothole at night that took out the rear
rim (did not crash, made it home). I have tentative plans to build a "poor
man's Rivendell" with some of the parts, but having ridden this bike for
some time, I know it will be a pale comparison. With that preface out of
the way, here are the details:

*Included:*

   - *First iteration black 52cm frame & fork; has the white paint details,
and "CLEMENTINE" written on the downtube*.
   - *Also included from the "complete bike" kit: headset, seat post,
brakes, kickstand, front and rear derailleurs, extra long chain.* (If
for some reason you do not want the brakes, derailleurs, chain, subtract
   $25)
   - Surly 8 pack rack that I modified slightly to work with this bike is
an extra $50 for frame buyer if desired, $80 if not sold with frame.

Bike is in very very good condition. I'm not going to document every little
boo boo, but there is nothing egregiously obvious here, it was well cared
for and always parked indoors on both ends of the commute.

I won't disassemble the bike until it sells, so between that and finding a
big enough box (fork will be removed), it will not be arriving to you
overnight. $750 plus bikeflights ($725 minus included extras).

Here are some pictures of the complete bicycle:

Re: [RBW] Roadini as commuter?

2018-01-10 Thread Patrick Moore
How much do you weigh? It's hard to imagine anyone but a 225 lb East German
elite track sprinter on steroids breaking a good steel frame across the bb
shell, loads or no loads.

I've heavily torqued much lighter frames up steep hills, with heavy rear
loads, for years, with no problems. I suspect a cause different from mere
rear loading.

Re: [RBW] Roadini as commuter?

2018-01-10 Thread Kainalu V.
I commute on a Quickbeam quite a bit and want to share one concern of mine.
This Quickbeam of mine is my 2nd as I murdered the first's bottom bracket
shell with a crack from front to back. On my "new" Quickbeam I have some
lowriders up front I carry any load I might on, keeping the rear clear of
anything but my butt. My reasoning is that rear loading killed the old
frame because those times when I was cranking up a hill standing on the
pedals with weight on my bars caused undue stress from those rear loads
riding along side to side without me in the seat to keep it all copacetic.
I might be wrong, but so far so good (except for that one point when it
wasn't).

I've long used a Carradice Super C with an SQR quick release. It has an
ample ~20L capacity and I use all of the space. (You need slightly more
than a fistful of seatpost for the SQR clamp.) I've done this with a
variety of bikes including ones that wouldn't fall into the typical
"commuter" species and its worked just fine. Just another consideration.

[RBW] Re: MUSA Shorts

2018-01-10 Thread Joe Bernard
#1 for wool underwear and unpadded MUSA shorts. I wasted 20 years trying to get
comfortable on upright bikes with padded cycling shorts, then rode recumbents
for a few years. A Brooks B17 with wool and MUSA was a stunning revelation. It
works!

Re: [RBW] Rear supports- marks, erlen etc

2018-01-10 Thread Jeff Lesperance
I had a similar dilemma where I had tried a Carradice bagman, similar in
design to the Erlen rack, and found it too noodly as load in my saddlebag
increased or road/trail surface was a little rough

I've settle on using a Mark's rack on the rear, after trying some other
cobbled together solutions and a Nitto R-14, which did the job just fine,
but was bigger/longer than I needed it to be and I was really looking for
something sturdy but minimal. I've not thought about sorting out the weight
limit situation with saddle + rack connection points, though the Mark's
rack as a woefully small weight limit of 4.4 lbs. according to Nitto that I
likely exceed on occasion, even when considering that the saddle is
carrying/support much of the weight.

There is definitely (at least yesterday it was there) a 65 Clem H on the site,
discounted from $850 to $750.

Re: [RBW] Roadini as commuter?

2018-01-10 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
As it turns out, the Roadini has braze-ons for a rear rack. Either way, the
Roadini is a bicycle in the old school sense in that it is not a hot house
flower, but can handle most any regular road and weather conditions, and
then some. New school in the sense its designer has been working on ways to
further tweak and improve this basic idea his entire career, as well as
explore new parameters (sloped tt, long stays, etc.) and it takes advantage
of modern materials. Based on what the OP already has in the stable, unless
his body requires the extra cush of super wide rubber, or he commutes with
a desktop and 3 changes of clothing and a set of encyclopedias, I say
Roadini all the way.

[RBW] Re: MUSA Shorts

2018-01-10 Thread Doug H.
Jeff,

I appreciate the feedback. Sounds like lots of people like these shorts and
that they are durable. I've not tried wool underwear so that may be
something to consider for longish rides.

Re: [RBW] Rear supports- marks, erlen etc

2018-01-10 Thread Steven Sweedler
Drew, have you looked at this rear support from Nitto
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Nitto-NR20-Rear-Rack/131538098516?hash=item1ea0481954:g:23cAAOSwPcVVgUA4

I think I have seen another very similar Nitto rack that attached to the
seat stays rather than the canti posts. Steve
