I know those trails well, and that is a grande ride. Super fun, even under
biking, but then you gotta work. Plus the bummer pave at the end. I’m assuming
you BARTed home?

I have attained the holy grail of adulthood with my 9 mile RT commute, replete
with alternative coffee and beer stops, and lonely trails for the ‘long’ way
home.

Here’s my take on the subject: I try to spend the majority of my discretionary
dollars with small businesses, artisans, farmers and artisans.
I do my banking with my local credit union.
Community is critical and having a real person remember your name and thank you
for your support is how we prevent the further encroachment of big box retail
from gobbling up the last remaining small businesses.

I would much rather deal with limited runs and out of stock items than to see
the unique and good become extinct.

Re: [RBW] Re: Frustrated by RBW lack of inventory

2018-04-26 Thread hugh flynn
In an age of instant gratification fed by federated clearing houses of
on-line retail excess, i think it’s perfectly fine wait for things from
time to time.

Sure, I love being able to get what I want when I want it - but that’s an
unreasonable and unsustainable expectation for ALL things at ALL times.
There are 1000 sellers able to provide cables, housing, and derailers
through Amazon (and now Walmart on-line sales) - but those are commodity
goods that can be provided by a countless number of sellers. I never know
if Seller A is out of something I want, because sellers B through Z are
always there to provide what I want when A can’t. That’s great, but it’s a
model that only works for readily available, mass-produced, commodities.

Once you step out of the high volume commodity market, expectations of
instant gratification must contend with the realities of small batch
production, raw material availability, suppliers who freak out and run away
to Cabo when a big order is due, and the never ending small-business cash
flow/inventory dance of the macabre.

Expectations must be adjusted when one wants what Amazon doesn’t provide.

[RBW] Re: Cycling around Downtown Washington DC...

2018-04-26 Thread Elisabeth Sherwood
Hi Rene,

The Renaissance is only a few blocks from BicycleSpace, one of the shops in
the city. Stop by when you arrive and pick up the Washington DC bicycle
map, which will give you some good routes in the city and, more important,
access to and from the off-street trails, of which there are quite a few.
BicycleSpace is at 440 K Street Northwest (K Street NW, between 4th and 5th
Streets).

Link to the map here (but much, much easier to have the paper
map): http://godcgo.com/bike/

Have a lovely visit!

Thanks for the guidance. First, the Hunq is a 58cm, so it's got 700c wheels. As
does Homer. Next, I'll be working quite a lot and prefer my precious ride time
to be for riding, not fixing flats. So with the information I've gotten, I'm
going to go with sealant and just learn from my mistakes and become proficient.
Patrick, IIRC, you very, very few flats with sealant? So I will use a tire that
is less than "bombproof" but stouter than a Compass. I guess for now I'm best
off using tubes w/removable cores. I'll stay with the Thunder Burts on the Hunq
and look at a Panaracer or a bit more supple, versatile Schwalbe for the new
Homer configuration. Tally Ho, goatheads!

What's wrong with Amazon? I actually would like them to be profitable and

I viewed another cycling forum that discussed all things Riv during the

overlap of frames, number of employees, expensive Bay Area real estate, etc

Interesting discussion to say the least.

Thanks all. I feel good today, but my legs and shoulders are a bit sore
from grinding up the steepies. I'm thinking about trying the same route
next time with my proper mountain bike and comparing my segment times.
There should be definite advantages having 29x2.3" tires and shocks on the
rougher stuff, but the drop bars and narrower tires should be faster on the
smoother stuff. Which bike will win? That's another advantage to Strava,
in that you can do semi-objective comparisons.

2018-04-26 Thread EasyRider
René, I'm local and work downtown. I'd suggest you ride the length of the
national mall one morning (both sides), and around the Tidal Basin and East
Potomac Park another. An out and back trip to Chain Bridge might make a
good third trip if you have a little more time and bring your bike. Head
down to the Lincoln Memorial and then go past the Kennedy Center and
Watergate complex. You'll then pass through Georgetown Waterfront park and
and beyond that is the C Canal towpath. Take that up to Chain Bridge and
take the ramp up to the path along the sidewalk -- it's a very scenic
setting, just a couple miles from the city.

[RBW] Re: Cycling around Downtown Washington DC...

2018-04-26 Thread Tom Wyland
I don't do much cycling right in the city (I live in the VA suburbs), but
the Mt. Vernon Trail is nice (along the river in the Virginia side). I
think you'll be sharing it with lots of runners, etc, unless it's in the
early AM. I'd also recommend riding the trails on the national mall and
the tidal basin area in the non-peak hours for some sight-seeing.

You can check out the Washington Area Bike Forums for some advice:
http://bikearlingtonforum.com/forum.php
Here's a cool local bike map site: http://dcbikemap.com/

If you don't want to bring your bike, consider Capital Bikeshare. I've
used similar systems when visiting Denver and New York on business. I just
expense the weekly pass and use it to commute to my office instead of taxis
or car rentals.

[RBW] Re: Frustrated by RBW lack of inventory

2018-04-26 Thread Grant @ Rivendell
Profligate inventory buying slims up our cushion of safety when an
unexpected blast hits, and our usual monthly $30,000 to $40,000 inventory
spending was cut back to $5,000 for the three months leading up to the
recent near-fall (even here I seemed cheap at that). It still wasn't
enough, but it made it better. But when the money's not coming in, the only
thing we can do is keep it from going out, just huddle and say, "we gotta
sell the stuff on the shelves."
And in some cases, things we've stocked are getting harder to impossible to
buy. Our 18-year supplier of Aussie wool things has closed. Our Norweigian
supplier of wool stocks almost nothing, so for us to get it we have to
commit to like 6 months of underwear that trickles out. So we're not doing
much of that anymore
This is no different from any other business, but I absolutely know the
frustration. I've stocked up on XL knickers, a size way too big, b/c I
don't see us ever getting in my beloved L's again. I bought two of the blue
MUSA shirts and one Green, same reason.
We're still recovering and are being extra carefulbut there are still
gaps. Not a lot, though. Do we need to stock 10 varieties of bells, to
indulge the bell-particularists? I think 3 is enough. The focus is on
duplication elimination now...and stopping trying to stock things we think
are groovy (or, in some cases "I" think are groovy) that nobody else seems
to like.
Here's some stuff going on to maybe look forward to and to end this on an
upnote: We're slowly ramping up MUSA wool, starting in the Fall, but it's
still gonna be a matter of get it if u want it when we have it.
More and more it's going to be (as DP...) bikes, bags, essential hardware,
and of course a smattering of quirky groovy fun essential things that have
no parallel in the real world but still make sense. Splats-like things.
Anyway, i feel yourzhallzis's pain, and we're doing better now than then,
so please please please keep giving us a shot...inventory levels are
excellent right now and have been for a month and should be ongoing...but
the scope may be smaller.

[RBW] Cycling around Downtown Washington DC...

2018-04-26 Thread René Sterental
Hi all,

I'm going to go to Washington DC for 5 days next week for a meeting, and
was wondering if it's worth bringing my Bike Friday with me to get some
nice early morning rides. I'll be staying at the Renaissance Hotel
Downtown, and all rides would have to start/finish at the hotel, although I
could get an Uber to go somewhere and put the bike in the trunk as an
option as well.

What do the locals recommend? Any nice rides, not in the middle of traffic
that would be worth doing? Any riding trails in the area worth exploring?
Most of my potential rides would likely be 60-90 minutes long at most.

Thanks for any suggestions and recommendations,

René

Re: [RBW] Extreme Commuting--a checklist ride complete

2018-04-26 Thread Patrick Moore
I used to commute 30 rt west-east across town, with 7 miles uphill from the
river to Juan Tabo, often extending one or both legs by 5 miles N/S along a
nice bike path. Yes, it's easy to overdo it, and as I got older (I did this
from ~ 1996 to 2008; 41 to 53) I slowed down considerably. Back in the
early days when my inbound commute was 16 miles across Rt 66 with 7 miles
of gradual climbing on a 67" or 70" fixed, I'd average 54-60 minutes
regularly, clock running, and all too often feel beat up. From about 2004
on, I slowed down considerably, 15 mile ver slower route * at 12-13 mph
clock running, and it was much more tolerable. I even tried combining
riding with the express bus to/from the university, but that was slower
than riding the entire route.

*I used to simply ride 'cross-town along Route 66 from Atrisco to Juan
Tabo; afterward I went through the university and fair grounds, or took
other detours with less, and slower, traffic.

[RBW] Bay Area Stolen Wheel Alert

2018-04-26 Thread Chris Corral
Hey All,

I recently had a pretty unique wheel stolen off my bike in San Francisco.
It was a 26" 40 hole Velocity Cliffhanger to Velocity Tandem ATB Hub. A
26x1.75" Schwalbe Marathon (or Marathon Plus?) tire was mounted. I checked
the East Bay flea markets last week, and while there were plenty of car
stereos and an Alfine rear wheel (anyone missing a silver Alfine 8?) my
wheel was not there. I am also keeping a constant eye on craigslist. FWIW,
they also took a no-name white saddle with a fake SUPREME hat mounted on it.

Perhaps the thieves will sit on it for a few weeks or months. Perhaps it
will go on a 700c bike with no brakes. Maybe it will sit in a pile of other
trashed wheels under a highway. Who knows.

Just sending out a PSA. Let me know if it spotted.

Thank you.

Re: [RBW] Which tire (and can I get by without sealant?) for AZ road/dirt

2018-04-26 Thread Patrick Moore
BTW: fixing goathead flats if you don't use sealant: you have to be sure to
pick out all the broken-off thorn tips before you re-install the patched
tube, otherwise you'll get another flat in very short order.

Technique: inspect tread; if you see the little, pale "dot", fold the tread
between your fingers and "roll" it to work out the tip.

Run your thumb around the inside of the casing; you can feel tips that you
can't see. If you locate one, use the "pinch and roll" or "massage" method
to work it out.

Re: [RBW] Extreme Commuting--a checklist ride complete

2018-04-26 Thread Deacon Patrick
Jonathan, I used this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Big-Book-Endurance-Training-Racing/dp/1616080655/ref=sr_1_1?s=books=UTF8=1524757124=1-1=phil+maffetone+books

Near as I can tell, any of his books will have his approach, they just have a
different target audience. Same content, aimed a different direction with
slightly different emphasis and new, often peripheral, info in the newer ones.

One can geek out on heart rate monitoring. I did it all wrong. I occationally
checked my heart rate with a phone app, got a feel for what aerobic felt like
and haven’t taken my pulse since. That was years ago. I ride to enjoy, not to
race, so I’m not looking to eek out every bit, just not drive myself into the
ground. Seems to be working. I ride my 5 miles to the trail heads, see folks
(20-50 years old) who drove their bouncy bikes there, they take off past me,
but I catch them within a mile or two, them bent double, me just cranking along
up the hill. When I shifted, however, it was very frustrating, because I felt
like I couldn’t move at all without my heart rate going too high. My body had
to recover from constantly being anaerobic. That took time. Works a charm
though!

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Which tire (and can I get by without sealant?) for AZ road/dirt

2018-04-26 Thread Patrick Moore
I realized I contradict myself on frequency. Forget the numbers; they're
more or less metaphorical -- metaphors for the more accurate qualitative
statements like "a lot" and "fewer".

Big Apple: flats rare. If you can tolerate 1 flat/week in a bad week, this
is the tire for you. I speak of the BAs from ~2000 up to about 2010.
Kojak: more often, but still can be shrugged off. I'd ride these today if
there were not Orange Seal.
Skinnies: more often yet, but by surprisingly few, and worth it for the
ride (Turbos, Pro Races, and GPs, in that order, rolled fast and smoothly
for their width at 80/90). Ditto.
Heavy Paselas: Like the skinnies.
559 1.25 Pasela: pretty bad, but tolerated for ride on wider tire.
PR and Elk Pass: impossible.

Again, standard is someone who routinely went through more than 1 box of
100 Remas a year, and bought them in lots of 200.

Re: [RBW] Which tire (and can I get by without sealant?) for AZ road/dirt

2018-04-26 Thread Patrick Moore
Tim -- one more remark after I actually read through your query. Adding
sealant to tubes is easy, if you take it step by step, have all materials
at hand, and pay attention to what you are doing. I always have to wipe up
a few drops, but that is certainly worth the benefit.

I've added sealant to many tubes with "non-removable" cores; you just force
off the locknut to let the core drop into the tube, where you catch it and
pinch-hold it at the bottom of the stem. Even if the core gets lost in the
abyss of the tube, it's easy, at least with the tubes I've used (2" and 1")
to find it by feel and work it back into place.

Re: [RBW] Which tire (and can I get by without sealant?) for AZ road/dirt

2018-04-26 Thread Patrick Moore
Tim: It all depends how many flats/week you can tolerate. I rode the
following tires in ABQ, NM without getting more than 3-5 flats over 60-100
miles/week. I routinely went through a box and a half to 2 boxes of Remas
per year.

Listed in order of goathead resistance.

Big Apple, 26 X 2.35 and 29 X 2.35. Almost goathead proof; rarely got
punctured on dirt. I've come off a dirt trail and brushed literally scores
of goatheads off each tire, then ridden away with no air loss over the
following 24 hours.
26 and 700C 1.35" Kojak. Best "road" tire.
Specialized Fatboy and Tioga City Slicker, early to late '90s. As with
Kojaks, but perhaps goatheads less common pre-2010.
Conti Grand Prix, early 2000s models, 559 X 1, 650C X 23. Not much worse
than the Kojaks; say 5-6/week over 100 miles instead of 3.
Michelin Pro Race 3 and 4: perhaps slightly more prone, but not by much.
Specialized 26 X 1 Turbo, very early 90s: surprisingly flat "avoiding" for
its supple ride -- nicer than GP and even Pro Race. But I used these only
in the early '90s when, perhaps, goatheads were not quite as common.
Heavier duty Paselas: more flat prone than Kojaks; anticipate 5/week.
26 X 1.25 folding, non-TG Pasela: flat prone; flats every other ride.
Parigi Roubaix: 5 flats in first 20 miles. This is what made me go out and
buy my first bottle of Stan's.

The Big Apple is the safest non-sealant, halfway decent rolling tire I've
used. The Kojak is tolerable for flats.

I daresay the Elk Pass (el) would fare much like the PR.

In other news: Schwalbe rep says 559 X 28 Pro One measures 28 mm +, even 20
mm, on 15 mm inside rim it was designed for; may try a pair, and may try
them tubeless.

Yeah, me too.

I responded to their request to 'please buy something to save the

but some stuff has been out of stock forever.
Bike packing has become huge. I would think that some Rivendell rackless

in their stock is needed. Needs a refresh.

2018-04-26 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Hey there Michael -

I've had this occur for a couple of things recently, as RBW builds
inventory back up.

However, in both cases, I just used the "Email me when this is available"
option on the site and curiously, both items popped up as available within
a couple days. For me, it's worth waiting for a new set of JB's...

anyway - I suspect as we get into the volume months and cash flow calms
back down, things will be better.

keep on riding!

Hey there Tim -

Hopefully this will help other members as well.

You have full posting permissions as far as this group is concerned.
There's no other switch I can throw to make this work better.

The issue is your yahoo email address. As noted in the error message you
are seeing, there's either some flag on that account (common from yahoo due
to the repeated hacks) or google is just taking a more stringent position
on letting yahoo email addresses in general go through their DM system.

That's sort of a nebulous "fix" they propose - there's not likely to be any
response if you ask yahoo for help, but at least you could try that.

Might be simpler to create a new email address.

Tim-

You didn't specify which size wheels your Homer wears. The smaller frames
are 650b.

For a tire that is a little burlier than Compass but still pretty
fast-rolling, I recommend the Panaracer Gravel King. It's available in 650
and 700, in various width. It comes with a file tread, or with a
semi-knobby (SK) tread. And, it's a lot cheaper (~$40) than Compass tires.

Sealant rules everwhere. You're putting sealant in a deflated tube, yes? And
removing the valve core when you do? I've been having good luck with the
clogging problem by giving the valves a shot of boeshield before I replace
them. I ride in NYC everyday which, while not being filled with goatheads, is
pretty hard on tires. I run Schwalbe Big Ones tubeless on bike A with

Re: [RBW] Extreme Commuting--a checklist ride complete

2018-04-26 Thread Tim Butterfield
Great job on the commute. Mine is less than 30 feet, so no riding for me.

I second what Patrick said and recommend getting one of Phil’s books.
Something to keep in mind that I have discovered with his formula, if
you’re over about 50 or so, you might need to add a bpm or several to make
up for age skew.

One formula is roughly this:
Level of effort X duration = recovery time

If you can decrease either level of effort or duration, you will likely
recover faster. As Patrick mentioned, a big factor in this is how much
above or below your aerobic threshold your level of effort is. If you can
stay comfortably below that threshold, your recovery times will greatly
reduce. Also, if you can convert to burning more fats than sugars as Phil
discusses, you can really minimize recovery times or greatly extend
durations. One giant benefit of this, the more you do at that lower level
of effort, the faster you can get at that level. It’s a bit more nuanced
than that with building a base before ramping up a level, etc., but that’s
the overall effect of it.

Have fun with the experiments.

Tim
