[RBW] Riding without fenders on Rivs reviews needed.

2018-05-20 Thread Mark Anderson
If your brake-mounted headlight falls into your wheel, that means your front
brake has detached from the fork. In that case the light may make you crash,
but you'd crash without the light too.

[RBW] Re: Riding without fenders on Rivs reviews needed.

2018-05-20 Thread Surlyprof
We don't get that much rain in these parts and usually know the season when
it's going to hit. My Hillborne has been fenderless for almost two years
since I got a fendered Brompton for commuting. I swap wheelsets often and
fenderless allows for gravel fun with Smart
Sams:

However, aesthetically, I do think the Hillborne looks classier with the
fenders:

Ok.
Almost sold but can it hold:

One multi tool
One lightweight rain jacket
One tube
Spare brake cable
Patch kit
Sunglasses
7” mini pump (mini morph)
Iphone

Bag lunch

I would just get another Carradice Pendle bag but I dont like how
floppy/sloppy/shapeless they look in my bikes.

So, Reed, what do you say?

[RBW] Hanging Edelux 2, tail-light wiring

2018-05-20 Thread Minh
Hi all,

I picked up a hanging edelux2 recently and it's one of the earlier ones
that do not support a tail-light direct connected to it--there's no extra
port. I know that means i can't wire the tail-light thru the headlight so
that it turns off/on with the headlight. But can i still wire the
tail-light into the hub power and ground IF i'm ok with the headlight
always being on? I know there's some risk if the headlight were to fail or
go-out that i would burn out the tail-light, but is there anything else i'm
missing with this?

as far as wiring, can i tap into the power lead going from the hub to
headlight or do i need to run a wire from the tail-light back to the hub?
thanks for any help, i always like to double-check/confirm when it comes to
wiring!

[RBW] Rivendells nicely represented at the Farmer's Daughter Gravel Grinder in Chatham, NY today

2018-05-20 Thread 'Mark in Beacon' via RBW Owners Bunch
I spotted a double tt Appaloosa, a green Hunq, a fawn-colored Hilsen.
Honorable mention to a silver Heron. Sorry, no pics, I don't do the smart
phone thing and it was way too wet and muddy for a camera. The ride,
sponsored by a local brewer, was spectacular and challenging; a riding
buddy said the ride narrative was awesome. Sounds maybe a little
pretentious, but I know what he meant. Incredible vistas, beautiful dirt
roads, challenging single track, mud, rain, a bit of sun, and moocho
climbing--advertised as 6,000 feet in 67 miles, something like that. Great
food, too, and a laid back friendly vibe. A++. I did not have a Rivendell,
but my at least 10-year old Baggins performed admirably, as did my Riv
waterbottles and my Newbaum's tape (which will need to be replaced.)

Today was Leo's last naked and free romp. Pic below. But after 60 miles
on wet roads this morning my feet were drenched, and I can't imagine all
the grime coming off the roads in Lyme, CT, where they heavily salt and
sand into the spring, being good for the drivetrain. Fenders go on this
week!

Re: [RBW] Traditional Cycling Shoes Makers?

2018-05-20 Thread Deacon Patrick
Follow up, in case anyone is playing “Fixed gear pedal retention” at home.
Grin.I emailed each of the companies with classic leather cycling shoes and
only heard back from one (Arturo shoe), and they only go up to size 11.5EE, so
too small for my flippers.

The ongoing testing of leather and stiffener insert is going surpurb. I’d
forgotten how quickly non-leather shoes stick up without socks. Sheesh. Whooof.
One day of riding without socks when already wet from the rain. It’s a special
kind of nose wrinkle. Like the difference between wool or cotton and
synthetics. Scrounged up a pair of moccasins from a few years back. They work
with the inserts, so I’ll try them on tomorrow’s ride. Also, Zero Shoes makes
the all leather upper shoe I have in size 14 for winter socks fitting, so I can
always get a pair of those in 12 and use the inserts. One way or another, it
looks like I’m set!

With stiffer shoes comes the question of pedals. Further testing required, but
the current default answer there is MKS Sylvan Touring with either HoldFast
straps (current system: I like them, but they have to be adjusted right or my
foot goes too far forward and then doesn’t want to come out easily) or toe
clips (yet to be tested).

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Any new Hilsen news?

2018-05-20 Thread Bob Lovejoy
It may be awhile before my catalog/brochure tracks me down... For those
that do have one in hand, is there anything mentioned on the timing of the
new Hilsen's or has anyone heard more?

I assume that they will need to get through the new Atlantis builds and
delivery before anything else big happens, and there may be other projects
as well, but I would be curious.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: 57 vs 61 Roadini

2018-05-20 Thread Bob Lovejoy
+1 to what Patrick says... I know I prefer a little too large of a frame
rather than a little too small. That said, other (younger and racier)
folks prefer the opposite. Still, I would be leaning to the 61 though the
conversation with people at Riv should be really helpful. If they have a
demo 61 built, it could be they would set the saddle height, maybe measure
few other things and send you info and pics?

There is also a picture of a 57cm Roadini somewhere here...
https://groups.google.com/d/msg/rbw-owners-bunch/YrobKUozAHk/koR_zTiRAgAJ

It is a 57cm with, I believe was reported, saddle height at 76cm

Many years ago, I had a similar shaped bag, might have been Kirkland or
Kirtland, it had a foam liner.
Sort of like a backpacking pad material. It was white, semi dense closed cell
foam.
It held the shape of the bag and dampened the noise of anything bouncing around
when it was only partially full.
It was a rectangle that formed into a cylinder when inserted.

Use a piece of cardboard or coroplast for a template.
I’m sure something similar could be had at a craft or fabric store.

Re: [RBW] Barsack (sackville) help needed

2018-05-20 Thread Patrick Moore
FWIW, several years ago when I put clips and strap pedals back on both
Rivendell Roads, Tony Colgrave in England sent me 2-3 pr of Brooks saddle
leather leftovers rough-cut into size 10 inserts for my too-flexy boat
shoes. They worked a treat: stiffened and thickened the interface between
foot and pedal, yet didn't become slippery when I rode sans socks. I still
have them, in case I ever go back to clips and straps.

So, if you have an otherwise unwanted Brooks Pro lying around ... (or 2,
since they'd render about 1 insert per saddle)...

Thanks for doing this. I started reading them today and enjoyed Grant's
view into starting a business, with the financial worries that come with
it. I've tried being a good customer for a few years and feel a bit guilty
that I doubt I will buy any big ticket items from him again, now that I
have a frame and wheelset on the way. I am, however, interested in what
future Sackville bags will be created. I'm not a big fan of saddle bags,
but the front trunk sacks have been great. I wish I did not miss the large
rear trunk sacks, but have managed to find a green one.

[RBW] Re: Extreme Commuting--a checklist ride complete

2018-05-20 Thread Matt Beecher
This has been a fun and interesting read. When I first started riding in
my adulthood, I was living in Georgia and commuting to/from the EPA in
Athens, GA. I think I went from a 20 minute driving commute to a 30 minute
riding commute, since I could simply start riding through the quad at UGA.
I was fortunate then that I had access to showers at work. I loved and
miss that job, but gave it up for my wife, who I love far more.

I am going to be changing positions with my current employer next month,
going from 80% travel to about 5%-10%. With that in mind, I am thinking
about trying for the long commute myself. Fortunately, 90% of the route is
on a bike path; the Fox River Trail for those that are interested. There
is only one stretch of an uphill ride that scares me in the morning and I
hope my dual lights keep me safe.

When I first started working for my employer, I sometimes rode home on
Friday nights and back on Saturday mornings to get my car. It is a 34 mile
one-way ride, so I am planning to drive in Monday and ride home that night,
then ride back in on Tuesday and drive home Tuesday night, etc. I've
already got dynamo and battery lights, panniers, and a couple options for
fendered commuter bikes (Atlantis, Saluki, '85 Trek 720, and a Boulder
somethin-or-another).

I'll have my own office and a decent sized desk, so I will plan to bring
clothes on Mondays, but I am nervous about how I will smell. As someone
born with anosmia, or at least not having a memory of the sense, I am very
paranoid that I will not sufficiently remove the stink when wiping myself
down in a bathroom. Given my friends and family aren't into cycling, I
have nobody close to ask, but would you expect to stink if you took an old
facecloth to use to wipe yourself down about 15 minutes after you get in?
I've heard of using baby wipes as well, but do those work better?

I'll probably start with riding home on Fridays for a few weeks, then work
myself up to one to/from commute for a month, then try adding more
commuting time.

2018-05-20 Thread Surlyprof
Kellie,

It’s Piedmont. From campus I can take 11th up to Taylor and turn right toward
the hills. It eventually becomes Mabury. A left on White later becomes
Piedmont. That’s out near Alum Rock Park. It’ll take you as far as Jacklin
which you can turn off and keep riding along the east sound wall of 680. It
comes to an end at Scott Creek which, unfortunately, you have to take down into
Fremont traffic (Warm Springs Rd).

I did attempt the hill route I thought I’d figured out the other day.
Continuing past Scott Creek Road I thought could go up the hills through
neighborhoods with one potential backyard crossing. There were hills but I
never got to them. I was foiled by a gated community. I guess no one can go
in but residents and guests. Defeated, I had to go back down Scott Creek Rd
where there are now concrete barriwrs in the bike lane due to construction.
More nerve racking than usual. So much for the scenic route.

John
Still determined to find a scenic route from San Jose to Niles Canyon.

[RBW] Re: 57 vs 61 Roadini

2018-05-20 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I do not have anything very useful to add but I am also at or around that
89 pbh number, usually have a 78cm saddle height and have studied (studied
being a little overstated) the Roadini numbers.

Like you said, the reach difference, as far as I can tell, is minimal, at
least workable. I will say the mid-tube top tube height is ~34.12" (right
at my theoretical limit) on the 61, which might be fine or maybe not... The
57cm shows to be ~32.56cm mid top tube (lower than I would like). Also, I
believe the Roadini has a relatively high stack, and my very amateurish
calculations came out as 630mm for the 57, 671mm for the 61. Someone
please correct that as needed as I would love to know the true numbers.

Anyway, I am very curious if others report or if you get more information
from Rivendell!

For now, I have decided to not decide. I had opted for a Sam (58cm) but
delays and life timing happened (a house sale and move, then travel) so I
ended up cancelling that for now. We shall see...

Let us know of anything you find or hear!

Re: [RBW] Re: 57 vs 61 Roadini

2018-05-20 Thread James Warren

Because the customs have a top tube that slopes about 2 degrees, and the
Roadinis have a top tube that slopes up 6 degrees (what Riv called the Expanded
geometry.) It’s a different sizing strategy.

My experience with the expanded versus classic Riv geometry is that my expanded
frames tend to feel like a classic frame whose seat tube is about 3 cm larger.

How tall are you overall? From pbh/sh measurements, it sure seems like the

(I'm extrapolating from experience with other frames, though - not Roadini.)

[RBW] 57 vs 61 Roadini

2018-05-20 Thread Dave Grossman
Attention Roadini owners.can I have some feedback

I am debating grabbing a Roadini frameset in the near future to fill the
road bike void in my life.

According to the Riv charts, I am basically at the top end of the 57 and
the bottom end of the 61. I have a 89.5-90ish PBH and generally run a
78-79cm saddle height. Reach seems to be pretty negligible between the two
and I like the idea of running less stem height on the larger frame.
However, I don't necessarily want a larger frame for road riding (seems
counterproductive) but I have a lousy low back for the permanent future and
long and low aint gonna cut it no more.

So those of you that have a Roadini in the larger sizes, tell me what you
think. I will put in a call to the RBW at some point when I am ready to
get it going. I was debating grabbing a BMC Road but I want more stack
than those offer.

Great write up Adam. I may try them flipped to see if my 'forearms on the
bars' power cruising theory has merit.
