two easy solutions to get them off your wheel:

1. go faster so they can't hang.

2. go slower so they must pass you.

Either works every time.

Benz,

t's a safety thing and courtesy thing (those might be the same). If someone
wants to be inches off my wheel, I want to know they are there and that they
aren't going to take silly risks. I've been so close to being rear ended
because I got out the saddle to stretch only to find someone running into me.

My feeling is if a person asks first, they have some experience of close riding
and I feel I can trust them. At least a call out of "on your wheel" would be
polite.

I've ridden quite a few brevets and have been pulled along by various strong
riders, so I'm not against pulling. But the commute home from work isn't
necessarily the right time for a peloton.

suggesting/discussing non-rivendell products here, but another option is
the Soma 3 Speed II bar, which is a moustache that fits mtb levers. I
want to try that one some day. It would make your primary grip position
the straight section, like the choco, but give you a tuck forward position
for cruising without coming back as far.

Do you already have the Choco bars? It seems to me that they're basically
the same exact bar/function as an Albastache bar, just specifically for
someone who WANTS it to reach back further. The albastache is divine.
Maybe I'm over-simplifying it though. I never tried the choco because,
without any additional width, it doesn't appear on paper to offer any other
benefit. On the other hand, I actually just added extenders to an
Albastache because I feel like there's never enough grip length. It's rare
that i'd ever want to cut a bar down and give up hand positions, however
subtle their difference.

Re: [RBW] Re: Thanks Grant

2018-06-20 Thread Jonathan D.
For what it is worth the issue isn’t done.

Interesting bit of background from one of my colleagues. As I mentioned below,
a briefing from the DOJ’s Gene Hamilton this afternoon makes clear what we
discussed: the Executive Order is illegal on its face. The White House knows
this. You can’t detain kids for more than 20 days. (Technically, the child
separation policy isn’t detention. They’re separated from their parents,
turning them into abandoned kids – “Unaccompanied Minors” – which the
government then must house.) Hamilton made clear that what happens from here is
that the administration will begin detaining families intact with a 20 day
countdown until President Trump blames a court for forcing him to separate
families again.

[RBW] Cutting down grip area of Choco bar?

degrees of swep) more comfortable for long rides, but I start wanting more hand
positions after a while.

I had been considering (and still am) Albastaches, but have also thought about

I have the short Tektro mtb levers, sunrace shifters, and ergon grips. It seems

[RBW] Other annoying threads

2018-06-20 Thread Jim Bronson
Since the non-political thread seems to be so irritating to people, what
other bike related topics do you find irritating?

For me it's old parts that provide no real benefit over new parts, but it's
supposed to be awesome. I mean sometimes the old stuff is great. I miss
shiny silver parts.

But the next person who tells me that a 7 speed freewheel is the bees
knees, well, they can bite me.

[RBW] Re: Thanks Grant

2018-06-20 Thread Adam in Indiana
Whether or not a person agrees it was appropriate to post this topic on this
forum, the sharp division this discussion has caused (even to the point of
certain members being singled/called out/attacked/given attitude, for voicing
their opinions) is an excellent example of why topics of this nature (doesn't
necessarily have to be obviously political) are best discussed elsewhere...

As Chris implied above, most, including myself, come here for a refreshing
getaway from this sort of thing, and while I respect everyone's opinion, and
largely agree with most, I have not enjoyed this topic. There is a lot of
divisiveness and backbiting going on (among other things) and it's sad to see
that here.

I would assume this is not what Grant wanted when he shared his opinion on the
blahgh.

If your child was taken from you, would that feel political? Or worse, if you

If brown immigrants are treated one way and white ones another, is that
politicalor do we call that something else.

Trump now agrees with us, so the political parties are aligned in the fact that
this is disgusting, but you have to wonder about the people who didn’t think it

2018-06-20 Thread EasyRider
Thanks everyone. The stumper is that I do line up my valves and tire labels to
better identify flats. It's just that the leak is incredibly slow And I just
can't find it via submersion to help direct my search of the tire for the
offending object. I do know that neither the originally punctured tube nor the
replacement tube that went soft has a valve leak. That was my first guess and I
stared at both valves under water for 5 minutes! That's when I thought, maybe
there is a better way to spend my time ...

Re: [RBW] Re: shimano cx-70 canti question

2018-06-20 Thread Paul Brodek
First off, great resurrection of a 01/2015 thread!

Were the CX70s binding only when the bolt was tightened, or without the
bolt being torqued down?

There are a couple/few reasons for cantis to bind.
1. The bushing inner diameter is too narrow. I don't think that's common.
2. The canti boss outer diameter is oversized. I don't think tt's common
for the overall boss diameter to be oversized, but sometimes the very end
of the boss becomes mushroomed.
3. The canti boss is too short, so the arm binds when the bolt is
tightened.
4. I suppose you could have enough grit between the boss & bushing to cause
binding.
5. What'd I miss?

Re: [RBW] Re: 650b vs 700c wide tite thoughts needed.

2018-06-20 Thread Patrick Moore
The quality of the wider tire will affect the comfort, apart from any
effect of the greater width. I'm familiar with Paselas -- worthy
inexpensive tires, and not bad -- but I've found that even narrower, but
more supple, tires ride better. My current ~29 mm actual Compass Elk
Passes, for one; these are very noticeably smoother, and faster, at least
to feel; and even the old, very smooth but very skinny Specialized 26 X 1"
Turbo felt smoother at appropriate pressures -- 80/90 psi versus 50-60 for
the Paselas, which were surprisingly sensitive to pressure. These Turbos
measured about 22 or 23 mm on my skinny rims, compared to the ~30-31 of the
labeled-32 non TG Paselas I used.

For the record.

Valves can also leak if the removable valve core is not screwed in tightly

I do it all the time with my terrier. She stays on the leash which I hold,
because she's a hyper dog and in NYC there's lots of stimulation...if she
jumps out (happened ONCE, but...) I let the leash run through my fingers
until she hits the ground, so she can't run into traffic. Mostly it's
great, she doesn't like high speeds.

Re: [RBW] Ever tossed a tire because you couldn't find the culprit?

2018-06-20 Thread Patrick Moore
Back when I had to worry about goatheads (thank you so muc,h Orange Seal) I
used to run the pad of my thumb or forefinger along the inside of the
casing, since thorns would often break off on the outside but remain
sticking in on the inside. I'd usually feel what I couldn't see, and saved
myself a world of bother.

BTW, the trick to work these sharp bits out if the tread -- on the outside
-- is to flex the tread between thumb and forefinger; roll the tread from
side to side while you pinch it. That usually gets the little sharp things
to work their way out.

OTOH, if you locate the hole in the tube in reference to the valve, you
ought to be able to identify the general location of the puncturing agent.

Re: [RBW] dogs on Rivs

2018-06-20 Thread Patrick Moore
I think it work well, as long as the dog is light enough and not too
scampery -- I can imagine the sudden weight shifts as an excited dog
scampers about a large basket.

And yes, some dogs do bail. My then wife and I were very cutely carrying
our 2 young Shi Tzu in a crate on the rear carrier, brother and sister,
both duly strapped in with shortened leashes. The female, always skittish
for that breed, decided it wasn't safe, and dove for the pavement. My wife
yelled, I panicked, we all fell over, almost crushing the bitch who was
hanging by her collar. Fortunately, all ended well.

After that I weighted the dogs down with cinderblocks. But one of those
bungee nets might work as well.

pedaling on the bike, he running) at 15 mph.

Re: [RBW] You like Hetres or Compass 42's better?

2018-06-20 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I like paying less money for the Hetres. I like having more miles with the
"extra" tread on the Hetres. The Compass has better performance--weighs
less--maybe corners better, but it doesn't matter enough for me to pay that
much more for that. I paid $118 for 2 Hetre EL tires. It would have cost
$164 for the Compass Baby Shoe Pass EL tires.

*"Isn't this same fear & hatred of Others what is behind car driver road

I don't think it's only fear and hatred, it's also arrogance and ownership,
and expectation of privilege, but I feel the correlation on a personal and
systemic level.

   - Some people feel they can shout at me, or buzz me with their car,
because I "don't belong" on "their" roads.
   - Other people feel that they can do anything at all to anyone who
"doesn't belong" in "their" neighborhood, country, forum, etc.

Thank you, Grant, for speaking up.

My Cheviot is a nightmare with weight up front. It had a crooked fork, and
aligning that helped, but it still is very unstable with a front load.

Well, I mounted my fenders pretty low, and a lot of the spray seems to come

2018-06-20 Thread John Phillips
Dear Grant, Thank you for your Blahg post.

Isn't this same fear & hatred of Others what is behind car driver road rage
against bicyclists?

My wife is a proud Rivendell Betty Foy owner, and a Mexican-American, born
here in the U.S. to parents born here in the U.S. to grandparents born here
in the U.S. If you go back two or three generations earlier, her ancestors
were born Mexican. As they say, "We didn't move, the border did!"

Trump pardoned Sheriff Appaio for his crimes of arresting and incarcerating
Mexican-American U.S. citizens without cause. Now Trump is separating
children from parents as a tool of terror.

I am a proud Rivendell Hunqapillar owner, descended from Jews who moved
here from Germany to make money in the gold & silver rushes of the 19th
century. They missed the Holocaust, but were terrorized by the huge KKK
rallies and marches of the 1910's & 1920's, and have denied their ancestry
ever since.

This administration has expressed views against civil rights, immigrants,
non-caucasian citizens, women & mixed-race marriages. As Rivendell owners,
we feel distinctly in the cross-hairs of the agenda of this administration.

If one doesn't want to speak up for human decency, compassion & human
rights, one should remember the French revolution and the examples of
authoritarian regimes of the 20th century: innocent or guilty they may come
for anyone next.

Again, thank you Grant for your gracious words,

[RBW] dogs on Rivs

2018-06-20 Thread Jim S.
I'm thinking about carrying a small dog in a Wald basket - I think the dog
would love it.

I've never tried it. I have two questions. (1) If you carry your dog on
your bike, and have photos, would you mind sharing? (2) I'm not sure if I
can trust the dog to not jump out - any ideas on safely securing her?

Thanks in advance for any responses.
