Bill:

You made my day. My first reaction to the OP was "...give 'em a call..."
but your response was much more elegant. I was there a couple of weeks ago
& didn't know about the Wavie bars until later when I read the catalog I
picked up. The only questions I had were 1 & 2 but I hadn't gotten around
to calling.

Seriously, everyone answers the phone & is super nice. We've become
conditioned to phone systems designed to get rid of us, so often we're
reluctant to call, thinking it a waste of time. At RBWHQ, live people who
want to talk to you answer the phone! What an amazing concept! It's so
efficient that I'm amazed more businesses don't pick up on it.

Why? The Japanese patches in the Riv patch kit are ultra thin and flexy,
and outclass even the Rema F0 patches. They are so good that they almost
blend into the tube, especially on thicker tubes.

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell Riders wear for cycling caps?

2018-07-06 Thread Dave Grossman
I'm a hat junkie and have collected ball caps since I was a youth. I
probably have had over 100 at a time at various points of my life. Not
sure why, just always dug hats.

As I have passed the gene on to my kids, they are always with a hat as
well. And "bike hats" as they call them fit them well. I like the Pace
(have the Riv one as well) caps a lot but also dig the Randi Jo Wooly Riv
cap. I wear it out all the time as a hat, in addition to under my bucket.
It looks like an old Brooklyn Dodgers cap. When winter swap season comes
I buy every cheap cap I can to sweat in and for my kids to wear and lose.
I have a big head and some of the Italian caps are tight.

As for sun hats, I highly recommend a Tilley. They aren't cheap, but they
are legit (Canadian made). When I am in the sun, I wear it all day.

[RBW] Re: FS: 56cm Rivendell Road - $875

2018-07-06 Thread CMR
Hi all, just to be more clear about the headtube, when I received the bike
a few months ago I took it to Rivendell since it's local. They checked it
out, said that wasn't effecting the internal diameter of the steerer
because the fork turns clearly. The alignment of the steerer cups is fine
and straight, so the the headset sits fine. One mechanic thought it was
potentially caused when someone installed the headset cups with too much
force causing a wrinkle/bump on the headtube, another mechanic wasn't sure
what caused it, both said not to worry. It's a small outward bump with no
crack in the steel, but has a small paint chip.

The bike rides great. I've had an A Homer Hilsen, Sam Hillborne, Atlantis,
Clem Smith JR, and a Quickbeam - this is the quickest of all them by far. I
believe it has sharper angles and quicker handling than any modern
Rivendell. Waterford built too!

All later Rivs had wider tire clearances. This was very early in the process
when Grant was still battling to build a road bike around ridiculous-short
racing brakes, hence the soon-to-be-introduced LongLow, which was a "sport

Then somehow he got Shimano to make medium-reach Ultegra calipers, followed by
Tektro long-reach. Btw this all upended what we call these things: Short used
to be standard and medium was long. Got all that? 

OK, Patrick,
Here's what their website says: *Made from a washable fabric stabilizer
won't disintegrate like cardboard (bleh) or crack like plastic (yuck).*
Either way I had issues with the brim absorbing stink during the summer. No
amount of washing or white vinegar could remove it, unfortunately. Seems to
work against the idea of having a wool cap to help mitigate stink.
The Rothera brims don't seem to absorb odors, but are prone to creasing.
It's always a trade-off, it seems.

Thank you, Tom. I checked. My winter and medium weight wool Walz Caps are

2018-07-06 Thread CMR
Happy to meet at a BART stop!

Erl, the metallic paint job is indeed very difficult to photograph, it's
gorgeous in the sun. I'm disappointed the single speed project I envisioned
didn't work out, but I found a Quickbeam and have limited room.

Thanks Joe, 57cm makes sense, I forget that Rivendell does CTT measurement.
I don't have the standover measurement right now but can get it Saturday
evening. Saddleheight shown is ~73.5cm.

[RBW] Re: Riv Odds/Ends/Accessories to Add to an Order.

2018-07-06 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Newbaums bar tape. I've added a handful of rolls to prior orders knowing
they'd eventually come in handy.
Wool undies. Certainly not the cheapest add-on but I had a stretch of
maybe 3 consecutive orders where I added a pair of Devold boxers after
being won over by the first pair I tried. Never thought I'd spend so much
on a boxer brief but they fit and feel great. So when I had the funds
and otherwise found I could use a little boost on an order to breach the
free shipping threshold I was happy to pick up an extra and replace some
other worn out undergarments.

[RBW] Re: choco norms

2018-07-06 Thread Ryan Olson
They are definitely more upright than 'staches. I find that I can get
suitably aero on the choco's by grabbing the front of the bends and resting
my forearms on the swept back part (I didn't cut any off), but not really
meant for that type of use I think. I was actually looking at other types
of bars that fit mtb brake levers that allow for a more forward position,
but not quite like drops; Soma Lauterwasser, Sparrow (upside down) or the
new Billie bars seem perfect, they're just out of stock, maybe even an
albatross upside down. Seems like that is the beauty of quill stems and a
semi-forward bar - you could adjust the bar height with one of those
mentioned above to give you a more or less forward position, but still have
the luxury of upright if you want just by adjusting the height of the stem,
which doesn't take that long.

[RBW] FS: 56cm Rivendell Road - $875

2018-07-06 Thread Christopher Cote
That is so tempting, even though I already have a Rambouillet that is mostly
the same that I don't ride enough. Do you know when it was made? Is it a
custom, or one of the early production models? Any idea what the seat and head
tube angles are? Looks like short reach brakes might be a better fit. The early
road standards were built around those, as "standard" reach brakes were
unavailable new at the time.

Or really just extra items that are handy to have around.

I have some Hail Mary credit to use, was going to wait for DC 610 brakes to

up the rest of my credit while I'm at it.

2018-07-06 Thread ctifusion
Awesome. That makes sense now. It was hard to figure because I didn't have time
to put it in a stand and take off the wheel to line it up. I agree that it's
worth the trouble to not use P-clamps (I knew U clamp sounded weird). But the
extra hardware is expensive so I understand if Riv doesn't want that rack to
hit $250, and that we're all on a budget of some kind with limits.

I'll post a pick after I get home and install the rack.

And Bill, your response is helpful.
