[RBW] How young is too young for a boy to get a hatchet?

2018-12-04 Thread Drw
I teach art and basic woodshopping to kids this age. I’ll second the idea that
it’s about building up to it, skillwise, rather than a specific age. I’m also
not sure it’s a responsibility issue either. There are certain safety things
you just learn with practice and exposure. I’ve had very responsible kids make
very dangerous mistakes simply because they hadn’t had enough exposure to a
tool to understand the ways it moves and what happens when your hand is in the
way. I think I’d go pocket knife-regular knife-hatchet- with a project or 5
based around each tool, before moving on.
My dad gave me a hatchet when I was maybe 10 or so, but he had had me making
kindling with his for years at that point.

[RBW] How young is too young for a boy to get a hatchet?

2018-12-04 Thread Philip Williamson
Ten seems like the right age to me, but all children are different.
I’d say trust your judgment, and trust your kid. It worked out for my kid (in
my opinion).

My friend was over with her 14 month old, who just LOVED running around in my
back yard. He was standing next to a metal yard-art thing with sharp rusty
“leaves” at the same height as his blond little noggin. I touched his head and
said, “Hey those are sharp.” He just smiled. I shrugged and said, “You’ll
learn,” and turned my attention back to the adult conversation. His mom was
laughing really hard. She said, “I was just listening to a podcast about Lazy
Parenting!”

I tell that story to illustrate that my perspective may not be your
perspective. Also, it takes a lot of work to be a “lazy” parent and let kids
take the right amount of responsibility for themselves.

[RBW] Re: How young is too young for a boy to get a hatchet?

2018-12-04 Thread Mark Schneider
My son was ready at 10, but he grew up in the forest and had helped me deal
with fire wood for years. He was very responsible with handling an axe (and
a knife) so he was definitely ready. Ultimately you have to make the
judgement on his maturity, level and his capabilities.
Your son sounds mature enough, I'd give him a shot with it, show him how to
maintain it and monitor him, see how he takes care of it.

Has he experience with proper care and use of knife? A hatchet is the same

I'm inspired by the new shipment Riv has of the Gransfors Bruk Hatchet, but
not for me. My son is turning 10, and at some time in the past, probably
when he was 5, I told him he could get one when he turned 10. Little did I
know he would remember. He's a handy and inquisitive fellow, and my
parenting view has always been to let him do stuff on his own. He has
ridden his bike by himself to the local market here in the wilds of the
city of DC since he was about 7 and seems to be semi-responsible when on
his own.

We do bike camping together, so there could be a need for a hatchet to chop
wood for fires, but as a Grateful Dead head I'm aware that Jerry Garcia's
brother axed off his middle finger when Jerry was 6. It worked out for him.

My wife seems okay with letting me decide, which in most circumstances is a
green light. I think a hatchet would be better than something with a
longer handle. And I am willing to get him something good he can own his
entire life.

Any perspectives?

Re: [RBW] Re: long reach calipers in the wet?

I recently swapped out the OEM cheepo dual pivot front brake on the Hon

hugely better as I had hoped, despite the Kool Stop salmon pads. I have to
say that this must be the nature of the beast.

[RBW] ISO wool cycling sweaters and (knit) vests

2018-12-04 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm looking for mid-weight (typical winter jersey weight) sweater and vest
for mid-layering in cold weather; something to wear over a jersey and, if
need be, under a shell. I'm looking in both cases for designs with high,
zipped or buttoned necks, like the Rivendell Wooly Warm vest and its
long-sleeved cousin.

Wool, of course; and cut trim but not tight (this rules out just getting
another winter jersey in a large size), and long. No need for pockets.

Neutral, medium to dark colors.

Anyone?

Thanks, Patrick

PS: Anecdote about what a good tailor can do for one's riding pants. A
couple of year ago I bought 2 pr of Endura riding pants from an online
source in Spain; good price: $140 each, a considerable markdown. I ordered
Large per their sizing chart.

Alas, the stupid things were cut in hipster jeans style, that is, with very
low waist, even though the rear was "cut for cycling and did rise higher
than the (absurdly low) front. And of course, though the size charge said
that the waist sizes they would fit included 34, in fact they must have
been 38s.

I had them altered by a tailor who did a sh*t job, but just recently took
them in to a new tailor shop nearby. The young man did something to the
waist that makes them fit perfectly -- albeit too low, still. He also
cleaned up the work done by the earlier tailor. But now 90+/100 instead of
70/100. I left pr #2 for the same treatment and wore pr #1 today for a nice
early-winter ride (40 high, windy, damp).

[RBW] Re: long reach calipers in the wet?

2018-12-04 Thread Justin, Oakland
Regardless of brake caliper I’ve found that using compressionless housing of
some kind and a the right lever goes a long way. For some reason the Paul canto
levers just feel stronger to me and correspond with better braking.

I prefer my Paul Racers on my Saluki to my rXXX long reach Tektros on my
converted Trek 710/650b but the Tektros feel better with SRAM levers and
compressionles housing than I ever remember before.

None of this is objective. And depends on your skill with setup.

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa/Sam

2018-12-04 Thread John Phillips
+1 on going with the second wheel set.

I've never taken a ride on a Bombadil, but I have a 2013 Hunqapillar, and
it's really fun & zippy with 38mm Compass tires, even on Atlas rims. I have
one Cliffhanger wheel set for 50-55mm tires, and an Atlas wheel set for the
38-44mm tires. Try out narrow tires on the Bombadil before deciding on the
2nd bike.

Of course, the 2nd bike means you can have two bikes with different
handlebars ready at a moments notice.

Wally, I LOVE my Silky saw for trail clean up. Amazing how quickly it cuts
through even large trees. If you bikepack at all, and use a small wood stove or
fire, the hatchet is very handy. I use it (or my Buck knife with an “on site”

Maybe try levers with different cable pull rating. I find the low-end shimano

2018-12-04 Thread Wally Estrella
Let me ax you a question. Wood you purchased a slightly used Gransfors
Bruk 415 for 115 shipped? I went out on a limb and purchased the 415
earlier this year. I also purchased a couple different Silky Japanese pull
saws. The pull saws just grab my attention first and work well for my
trail clean-up rides.

415 has maybe 20-30 swings on it and all into clean wood. Comes with the
sheath.

I can get pics when I get home later today.

CHEERS! and swings!

Hi Dave,

I've had both, and am around your height. I rode both for fitness, camping,
and fun, and you really can't go wrong. My 64cm Sam might have been a bit
"sportier" but that was likely as much a factor of the drop bars and light
wheels as anything. My 62 Appaloosa is a touch more versatile, and
excellent with a load in the back or front in ways the Sam was not (past a
certain weight, say 5 lbs or so of cargo). I'd go with whichever you can
find that fits and is a decent deal (or that has a color you like). The
Appaloosa is my pick on any kind of mixed surface/gravel, as the long stays
really make it stable and fun when the dirt gets a little loose. I sold the
Sam, but got a Hilsen, which is that bit sportier than either of them, so
you might consider that, too if your major need is a road-ish bike.

Eric,

I've found Tektro 559's to be suboptimal for 650b conversions, mostly
because they had to be at the bottom of the slot to make it work. I believe
Tektro 559s on a bike like the Hilsen with 65mm brake reach will feel much
better.

Even still, you can put Paul Racers on these, and they will feel excellent.
I had the caliper Hillborne and Cheviot with Racers and they felt great

Re: [RBW] Dyno wiring weatherproofing

Corroded where?  At the connection to the hub?  Perhaps grease might
help?  I used to have a chronic problem with corroded connections for my
wired-on bicycle computer, but dielectric grease fixed that once for all.

I'd like the banana sack. Let me know if this email is the same for Paypal

[RBW] Re: long reach calipers in the wet?

2018-12-04 Thread Bob Lovejoy
I will just add that you could use good center pull brakes as well -
Paul's, Dia Compe GC700(?), others? I do have R559's on a 650B conversion
(with Kool Stop pads) and have been ok with those (and absolutely love the
bike!) but I will be using Paul's and Kool Stop's on my AHH. I don't
expect any problems but I don't have any data to back that up. My take is
that the longer the reach, the better the quality of the brake should be,
that translating to build quality, strength of the materials and design,
etc.

[RBW] Two projects!

2018-12-04 Thread Fullylugged
So both of my RBW products are off-line for refurbishment. The 1995 Road
Prototype developed a crack in the left chainstay near te BB shell. Allen Wanta
in Clearwater FL has it for replacement (He'll use Columbus or Dedacciai
instead of the Reynolds 753-heavy wall) and will re-spray it. It will keep its
current colors: Light English Blue (it was originally built at Waterford and
that is one of their colors) with cream (the same cream as the decal color)
lugs and bi-plane fork crown. Allen was much more reasonable in price than
Waterford and his lead time is about 9 weeks. Btw, even Waterford's price was
1/3 the cost of buying an equivalent new lugged frame, so GP was spot on when
he spoke about the long term value of a repairable steel frame. And this
particular bike is unique as far as I know and a keeper. I have ridden the tar
out of it since acquiring it off this list in 2008.
The 2006 Rambouillet is stripped down for re-painting. No structural repairs
needed by the paint is heavily beausaged. This bike has had skinny tires and
fat, been on pavement and gravel and been set up factory with noodles and
upright with flipped mustache bars. It is going to be painted an old Ford
color, Amber (also called Sunset on Mustangs) Gold. I saw it on a Mustang and
loved it for a bike. It will keep a cream headtube but I'm saving a little by
not painting the lug windows as original. Have a few stuck screws to drill out
before bringing it up to Nathan Barnes in Pelham AL. He paints cars during the
week and bikes on weekends. Again, very reasonable in price. He did my old
Nashbar Mark III in (Toyota) Barcelona Red 2 years ago and it still looks
superb. Named "Ferrous Beuller" it's a UJB crit racer in Tange tubes converted
to an excellent 650B bike. My fair weather brevet bike as it has no eyelets for
fenders. Nathan paints only. No frame repairs.
Decisions still need to be made on the re-builds! Doubles? Triples? 1 of each?
handlebars? :) They were both triples. May do a compact double on the Road
and keep a triple on the Ram. We'll see. Nitto 135 Rando bars I think for
the Ram this time and drops for the Road. It'll be fun!

Re: [RBW] long reach calipers in the wet?

I see no mention of what the brake pads were that you tested.  In
long-ago days, I recall Bicycling magazine testing brake pads and
discovering that in the wet, the salmon Kool Stop compound was
dramatically better than others in the test.

So, does anyone have a setup that works in the wet for long reach brakes?
