[RBW] Perplexities regarding flat tires

2019-01-06 Thread in Dallas nick

Learning to change out an inner tube after flatting is definitely a high value
skill to learn for any cyclist I think.

That's probably one of the main things that would be included in a basic bike
maintenance class.

A bit of practice after learning the basics should serve you well.

There was a first time for all of us in learning how change out a flatted tube
and a learning curve to get proficient at it.

At the beginning I would get frustrated trying to remove and replace the rear
wheel in the frame until someone showed me an easier way.

I also ruined a number of new tubes by rushing and not taking the time to make
sure the tube was completely inside the tire and a part of it not being pinched
between the rim and tire bead.

The sudden and very loud pop as well as $5 to $10 down the drain via a ruined
tube will teach one to check thoroughly.

If you're boys continue in cycling this would be a good skill for them to learn
as well.

Perhaps learn as a family?

Treat it like a puzzle.

What caused this blasted flat?

Let's figure it out together.

A few mystery flats of mine turned out to be issues in the base of valve area
that had been separated a bit.

It would hold air for a time but with slight movement of the stem begin
leaking.

I've also had the cursed tiny wires the semi truck cast off when their
retreaded tires come apart and litter the roadways.

Even tires with flat protection built into the tread are not immune from those
tiny devils especially when touring.

The last few years most of my flats were caused by seam separation of the tube

an obvious manufacturing defect.

I've had a least 3 and a friend had one last week from seam separation.

I guess we got a defective batch of tubes.

Sometimes I resort to putting the tubes in  bathtub water to isolate the leak.

I've found it also helps when first installing a tube to always orient the tire
the same way on the rim every time.

Then after removing a flatted tube and determining the leak location you can
know where to check the tire for the source of the puncture if it was a
puncture.

Of course check both the outside and inside of the tire.

Goodness, this got long.

I hope a bit of it helps.

Thanks very much; those show me what I wanted to know.

And thanks to the person who posted the Crust photos -- the bent stays are
exactly what I'll need to do.

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar fender options

2019-01-06 Thread Kurt Manley
So much good info here! Giant thanks to everyone who has chimed in! Jacob,
thanks for taking the extra time to take photos! And everyone else with the
links and advice, what a great list!

I guess the flat 65 is the front runner right now. A little more than I
originally hoped to spend but isn't that always the way.

Drw, one of the main differences between metal and plastic fenders (at
least to me) is metal fenders usually have a rolled lip along the edge that
prevents water from flowing out the sides and blowing back on you. I think
plastic fenders are easier to install and safer as many have quick releases
and can flex a bit if something jams them. So each has its merits. Also
metal just looks way nicer imo.

Peter, Please post back with your results! And that Noreaster is one of the
coolest bikes I have ever seen!

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Mismatched tires

2019-01-06 Thread lconley
My SE Bikes F@e came with a 100 mm front rim, 80 mm rear rim for the 26x4s
for the same reason, the wider front rim makes the front tire a little
wider and gives it more flotation on the soft stuff.

On a road bike, I would put the wider rim/tire on the rear.

Honjo H95s. I bought two pairs, one for my Bombadil, one for my HHH. They
are listed a 65mm wide and rather flat. They are noticeably wider than the
stainless steel Berthouds (650bx60) currently on the Bombadil. The
Berthouds are being transferred to the Clementine and the Honjo H79s
(650bx55mm, hammered and fluted) are transferring from the Clementine to
the MMM.

Page Street Cycles / Ahearne have some nice pictures of the H95s over
sizeable knobbies on their Outback on their website.

Jamison,

Did you get a Quickbeam. I’m also looking for one. If anybody sees this soon,
please give him first shot at a 60. I would also be interested in a 58.

I would also consider similar riv models, such as the Simpleone or 59 Frank
Jones.

Cheers,

Re: [RBW] Re: Perplexities regarding flat tires

2019-01-06 Thread Steve Palincsar
Actually, unless we're talking about goathead country or roads
completely covered with broken glass, an uncontrollable string of
punctures points strongly to one of three things: an embedded sharp
still stuck in the tire, causing the same flat time and time again (and
wires are particularly good at this, and almost impossible to find
without a strong backlight and a magnifying glass); defective tubes; or
a worn out tire that's so thin anything can get through.

“I’ll check out the tires liners, Lester. Thanks so much. ”

My very limited experience with tire liners is that they cause more flats than
they prevent. I wouldn’t resort to them before having an uncontrollable string
of punctures and even then, I would consider better tires first.

Re: [RBW] Re: Perplexities regarding flat tires

2019-01-06 Thread ascpgh
I have had only a few flats that were unexplainable after having the chance
to do some after the fact inspections. They mostly involved suspicion of
the integrity where the tube and the the integral skirt around the base of
the valve are joined. It's bad when you become critical of inexpensive
inner tubes, they have so few functions but are so important.

Yeah, I had a flat-related spill I detailed a few threads ago, rear tire
pierced by a very sharp shard of very hard stone from a brand new chip top
surface on a road out west. all flat, all at once. My outcome wasn't helped
by either that I was going downhill fast or that when I did dismount the
surface that took the tire/tube got me next. Live and learn.

Hasn't slowed me down but I am more attuned to my tires' condition/wear,
tubes, their inflation and valves. It's better to have a clue about what
might happen instead of remaining surprised by outcomes to which those
assessments might enlighten you.

Re: [RBW] Re: Of Fishnet Long Johns and Boiled Wool

2019-01-06 Thread Garth
Try no baselayer tops at all PM, just regular polyester fleece. My
favorites are basic fleece like Polartec's 100, 200 and WindPro of varying
weights. I tried this on a whim one cold 20 degree winters day, wearing
both a 100 1/4 zip and 200 full zip jacket with a LL Bean supplex nylon 1/2
zip Anorak over them while hiking up and down my local hills. All very
loose fitting. The Anorak is a way oversized vintage XXL tall , while I
usually wear large in most clothing. It has drawcords around the hood and
waist and bottom hem, and it's a good 32 inches long to cover the rear and
hips so opening it up for a chimney cooling effect is great. Since there
is no base fabric to absorb any perspiration, it evaporates very quickly
off the skin. Any moisture that contacts the fleece dries very quickly from
body heat and there is no "rebound" effect of a chill as I never get too
wet and hot. Staying "just right" feeling is very easy. It's all pretty
cool !
