Stephen,

I also really like your Cheviot.

The color along with the bags looks very sharp.

I relate to the "Hippie-grandpa-coolness".

My son gave me the pictured t-shirt for Christmas.

Hopefully next month I will get to ride bikes with my Grandson's who will be
visiting from out of state and I'll be wearing the t-shirt.

Safe riding.

as far as toe over lap, it was a fear of mine but, really, it has not

hard with no pain. It is a shame that they charge so much for them but
if they allow me to keep on riding, it is money well spent

This has been an enjoyable thread! Thanks for putting it up Ryan. My
Rivendell addiction mirrors that of many others on the list. If I had made

One Riv thing that has always captivated me is Grant's fork design. The

So happy to be a Rivendell bicycle owner/customer. Thank you Grant &

[RBW] Re: Boyz on the Hoods: 4th Annual Escape from Super Bowl Weekend Campout

2019-01-18 Thread Clayton.sf
I will coming from Healdsburg north of SR. My two plans are as follows:

1. Dry plan: show up at around noon, ride Annadel until dusk or until my
legs quit (whichever comes first), then head over for dinner and camping.
This version will likely have me driving down with a bunch of local
firewood and other camp favorites. Can easily pickup 4 more people in the
north bay too so if anyone wants a ride down let me know.

2. Wet weather: Ride bike down from Healdsburg around 11am with a bunch of
scenic detours but sparing the trails at Annadel to not cause undue damage.
Happy to bike down with anyone that wants to join the fun or meet up en
route.

Both options will regroup at key points so no one gets lost or left behind.

[RBW] Re: Hillborne dropbar, bar-ends: Cross shifter housings then cables?

2019-01-18 Thread Pancake
Hi Jay. Love me some Sheldon Brown. Did you notice if I violated any of the 4
commandments? For what it’s worth, they do allow the bars to be turned all the
way until the bar end shifters hit the lower top tube (thus the twine there to
protect the frame). I tried to make them flow straight into the
stays/shifters/levers/rear derailleur so as not to have unnecessary friction
then made them as short as that allowed.

Though it seems like a normal/natural arch to the housings in front, the same
Sheldon page you linked has a helpful section on “cross crossing” the cables:

“Criss-Cross" Cables

Most bicycles with handlebar-mounted shifters run the rear cable on the right,
the front on the left. This causes some awkwardness in routing the length of
housing from the shift lever to the frame stops. Due to the need to allow these
housings to be long enough to permit the bars to be turned all the way back and
forth, the housings often wind up making a reverse bend--for instance, the rear
will go from the shifter, which is on the right, swing forward and cross over
past the centerline of the bicycle, then back over to the right side of the top
tube, before heading down the down tube. These extra bends increase friction,
and the fairly forcible contact between the housing and the side of the top
tube can damage the finish.

A neat solution to this is to run the cables "criss-cross" style: The rear runs
from the lever, (on the right) around the top tube, and to the cable stop on
the left side of the downtube! The front cable crosses over similarly from the
left side of the handlebar to the right side of the down tube.

The bare cables then cross one another under the middle of the downtube, making
an "X". The cables may touch where they cross, but they will do so very
lightly, since they are both straight...the tiny bit of friction at this
crossing is more than offset by the reduction in friction in the
smoother-flowing cable housings.

This technique does not work with over-the-bottom-bracket cable routing, but is
doable with most newer bikes that have under-the-bottom-bracket cable routing
and cable stops mounted toward the bottom side of the down tube.

Hey Justin, thanks a ton for making this happen!

I'll be accompanied by my 7 yr old son, who will be on his bike trailer.
Hence, joining the regular ride group does not seem feasible. If anybody
else is on the same boat, we can figure out a shorter/easier ride. The
plan would be something like drive to a place that is 10-15 miles from the
campsite and then ride. I'm 100% unfamiliar with the area. Any
suggestions for this type of ride would be great!

[RBW] Re: Hillborne dropbar, bar-ends: Cross shifter housings then cables?

2019-01-18 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv

The Four Commandments of Cable Routing:

   1. The handlebars must be able to turn as far as they can in both
directions without being limited by a cable pulling taut. Instead, the
turning limit must be set by the handlebar bumping into the top tube
    or by the brake
arm or reflector bracket bumping into the down tube
   .
   2. No wrong direction bends (For example: as the rear brake cable leaves
the top tube and makes the bend down toward the caliper
   , it should make a
smooth transition from parallel to the top tube to parallel to the seat
   stays . If the
cable bends up from the top tube before bending down toward the seat stays,
it is probably too long. If the cable curves out past the caliper, then
bends back at an angle more vertical than the seat stays, it is certainly
   too long.
   3. The bends that cannot be avoided should be made as wide (gradual) as
   possible,
   4. Cable housings should be as short as they can be without violating
the above rules. If a housing is attached to a part that moves, test it at
the extreme positions it will take when in use. Apply a brake; shift a
derailer to the positions where the cable is tightest and where it bends
the housing the furthest in each direction.

I didn't like the (non carved) C-17 on my Sam. Don't recall if I had
Noodles or Albas on there when I tried, but either would have been around
saddle height.
I moved it to my Brompton and I like it there just fine.
Very happy with the Rivet Pearl which is now on the Sam.
Saddles - you gotta just lay out the $$$ and keep trying until you find one
you like

2019-01-18 Thread Collin A
Wow, good job on getting the sites and doing all the heavy lifting for this
not-meeting!

The nearby lagunitas general store has most things needed for a good
camping trip, and is about 2 miles from the campsite so coordinating food,
beers, etc. would be pretty simple. Just send out a refueling party at the
end of a day.

Don't move firewood! The lagunitas store and camp host usually have bundles
for sale ~$10, and are easily pack able via basket or pannier.

Re: [RBW] Re: Lack of Betty Foys for sale.

2019-01-18 Thread Joe Bernard
Packing a frame is relatively simple, a whole bike not so much. In either case
you'll easily find a bike shop who will sell you a box and pack it for you,
this seems to be big business at bike shops in the age of Ebay. While they're
working on that you can order labels from Bike Flights or Shipbike with your
buyer's address. You'll either give the labels to the shop and FedEx will pick
up from there, or take the box to FedEx yourself. Easy!

Of course I'm biased in my efforts here, I'm already aware of your interest in
a Cheviot and think it's time for a new Riv!

Re: [RBW] Re: Lack of Betty Foys for sale.

2019-01-18 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
My guess is that a lot of Bettys went to women, and women seem to typically
have one bike that they use for a long time. I realize there are exceptions
and I don’t mean to speak for every woman cycler out there, but that is the
case with me. I’ve had a 55 cm Betty since late 2012 and I have ridden the
wheels off it. (No really, proof is on my Instagram. The great wheel and tire
debacle of 2017 .) Honestly, we’ve been quite a pair, and that bike has done
everything I’ve asked of it.

When the Cheviot launched, it was shortly after I bought my bike, and I’ve
always wished I had the Chev. I love the decals and head badge and cream head
tube. Plus, it takes a larger tire, yes? Some say the longer chainstays aren’t
noticeable, but I’ve always wondered. Since seeing it online, I have been
dreaming about the dark sage Cheviot, and I *think* I could part with my Betty
- but only for that Cheviot. I’ve come to love my bike so much that it feels
like an extension of my own body, and anything else would feel foreign at this
point. Except another Riv mixte. So, I’m in the process of really evaluating it
it’s worth it to “upgrade”, working through feelings of selfishness at not
being content with a perfectly good Rivendell, wondering how to break it to my
husband (whose eyes bugged out of his head in 2012 when I bought the Betty),
and fretting over how to sell a frame, as it’s a first for me. You can probably
relate!

So, depending on how that goes, there could be one well-loved 55 cm Betty on
the market in the near future. Maybe.

[RBW] Re: FotR: Updates, info, questions

2019-01-18 Thread Neil Doran
Most excellent! Was just wondering what the status was. Definitely in here.

I'm still up for rear-leading the Pine Mountain-BoFax ride...looks like it
is about 33 miles, probably just about 50/50 dirt to pavement...lotsa
climbing, but only significant one (I think) is pavement after Alpine Dam.
This one has lots to offer..stellar views (depending on fog), history (Pine
Mt Truck Road, the top of RePack, etc.), side trips galore (Tamarancho,
Pine Mountain, RePack, etc.) for anyone who wants more (not me).

Going our own on food and drink sounds simple to me.

If I can carve out the time I intend to take the train down and do the
'whole enchilada', riding through SF and Marin...but if I drive, I can
bring large quantities of firewood and related supplies. But I would rather
ride.

Thank you for doing the legwork on this.

Reasons why more Betty Foys don't pop up.
First, there probably never really that many to start with.
2) Being replaced by the Cheviot.
3) The introduction of the Clementine.
4) It was more or less targeted for women & sadly there's a much smaller number
of female cyclists.
5) Probably more than most Rivendells, as in your example are purchased for the
intended user by a well meaning loved one. Depending on that relationship,
daughter, wife, girlfriend, etc. The bike may be ridden or it may sit in the
garage, store unit, etc.
Many BF recipients may have no clue about their bikes origin or how exceptional
it really is. So they may pass it down, give it to charity or worse just let it
collect dust. I was brutally made aware of this by my sister who I discovered
gave a bunch of REALLY nice bikes that I had sent them to the Goodwill while
cleaning out their storage room. When I see how much similar bikes go for on
Ebay it's hard to keep from crying.

Five to seven years ago Betty’s seemed slightly common for sale from my
perspective but that could be egocentricism at work where what your mind
focuses on it notices. When I buy new vehicles for my wife I am always
surprised by how many I notice within my surroundings that I never noticed
before.
Brings back car games like Slugbug and I spy.
ILike Joe I only recall 1-2 Large Black rebadged YSMs.

I would not part with a Betty today if I had one. Again personally biased from
historically hunting for other rare RIV breeds on the large side of the
spectrum.

[RBW] Re: Boyz on the Hoods: 4th Annual Escape from Super Bowl Weekend Campout

2019-01-18 Thread Clayton.sf
For fancier lighter tents check out tarptent.com. I have their contrail and
it is a great tent. You will have seam seal it yourself and supply a tyvek
ground sheet.

Hammock camping is well worth looking into too. If permitted and suitable
for the environment I prefer the hammock, but still use the tent quite a
bit since trees are not everywhere and some campsites forbid them. In
general though being above the dirt and wet is more pleasant than on the
dirt and wet.

Other drawbacks of the hammock are setup time takes longer to get it
perfect. More bulk for similar warmth. A pain in the butt to share with
someone. Learning curve. Research time wasted ;-).

In the end, having both is nice. If I had to go with just one I would go
with a tent, but sleep much better in a hammock.

IN ADDITION AND ONLY SOMEWHAT RELATED: for those of you who own tarps -
bring them. We had one rainy year and having tarps to string over the
"communal area" immensely improved the experience. I will bring a 6'X8' and
cord, but more is always better.

See you all soon!

[RBW] FotR: Group campsites got

2019-01-18 Thread 'Justin August' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hey folks-
I have been able to secure the Devil’s Gulch group campsites in samuel P taylor
Park for the weekend of July 17-20!

We’ll hash out more details later and I know it’s not the Madrone Group
campground but if we want that then we’ll have to do the gathering later and
I’ll need some assistance at 12:01am to get it!

Really nice Cheviot, I like the fenders and the little chalk bag for your
coffee while you ride home in the rain. Enjoy

Ian,
The comparison was inevitable! Green, woodgrain, luggage. I finished

[RBW] Re: Bikepacking 27.5+ v. 29+

2019-01-18 Thread Christopher Cote
Patrick,

I built up a Surly Krampus with 29x3" tires last spring and pretty much
rode it exclusively in 2018. I love the big wheels. I have also ridden a
few Santa Cruz full suspension mountain bikes at demo events with 27.5x2.8"
tires. The rolloverability (not a word, but I think you get my meaning) of
the 29+ wheels is noticeable and much preferred in my opinion. As expected,
the bigger wheels are heavier, have greater momentum (both good and bad),
and for lack of a better word, more "stability". My Krampus will fit
29x3.25" tires, and I am seriously considering going up to that size.

Now, these are "motorless motorycles" as Grant Petersen describes modern
mountain bikes. That's OK by me, I like motorcycles, too. My use case is
riding around in circles on tough single track, not bikepacking. I think
that the benefits of 29+ would still apply to a GBW and bikepacking, though.

Chris

[RBW] Re: Lack of Betty Foys for sale.

2019-01-18 Thread Garth

It's not a mystery, a Betty is a Betty and there's only one Betty... as
a Cheviot is Cheviot etc. etc. They are each perfect just as they
are. The web , however one views it, isn't all-inclusive, not ALL or even
remotely so. For example, it's like looking in a printed newspaper at the
classified and assuming that's all that is for sale, when it's not ALL at
all ! Assuming another medium could list more for sale will show more, but
it's still not ALL. Only ALL is ALL and ALL is Infinity ;-) .
