Indeed! Rivendell bikes tend to have low bottom brackets and slack seat
tube angles, so as far as conventional bikes go, they're as easy to pull
off one-footed stops as any. Something's missing from the picture.

2019-04-20 Thread Steve Palincsar
You're not going to be able to do that with any standard geometry diamond
frame bike that fits you properly. If that's really a requirement you need
a semi-recumbent like a Rans. Or, alternatively, you could reconsider the
idea and learn how to dismount properly at a stop sign, one foot on the
ground and one still on the pedal.

[RBW] You meet the nicest people on a Rivendell

2019-04-20 Thread Patrick Moore
As I walked the 2003 through the crowded aisles of the Corrales Sprout's
this afternoon, I was accosted by 2 strangers who wanted to praise and
inquire about the bike; particularly liked the faux-hammered VO fenders.

One of them was a woman in her, I'd guess, late 30s or early 40s (anyone
under 50 looks young to me), retired racer for Chris Chance or one of his
spinoffs, carbon fiber riding but with the wit and experience to appreciate
steel quality. The other was a hugely overweight but surprisingly spry man
in his (I'd guess -- anyone over 65 looks old to me) 70s.

That's the typical response; the negative ones -- like the young upstart
who (also inside Sprout's) who called it an "old steelie" are very rare.

FWIW, if you can pedal mid-foot instead of on your toes you can lower the

when stopped.

[RBW] Re: New Here. I am thinking of selling my Betty Foy, any advice on value?

2019-04-20 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Welcome, Cinzaw! As others have mentioned, it is difficult to get the saddle
low enough to do what you describe, at least that isn't built with slack angles
as Doug mentioned, in which case it will likely ride very differently and not
like a Rivendell. I think you may be amazed by how much practice builds skill
and this becomes a non-issue. A few things to play with in the neighborhood,
practicing stops, stands, and starts without traffic:

- lean the bike a bit more and one foot it. This is surprisingly stable but
just takes a bit of getting used to. I do this all winter, including on
snowpacked roads through town without issue.
- two foot stand, off (forward) of the saddle. Coast to a stop, and step to the
ground. Do this by backpedaling with one foot till it is at the bottom, coast
to your stop point, brake and stand on the low pedal as you stop, placing your
high pedaled foot to the ground as you shift forward off the saddle. Backpedal
to position the desired pedal at "1 o'clock", so it's ready to go. When it's
time to go, put your foot on the 1 o'clock pedal, weight it, standing as the
bike goes forward, and pop up into the saddle and you're on your way. Practice
this a few times and it will become very smooth and second nature, even at busy
intersections.
- I'm unsure what Doug is referring to about "dangerous" low saddle. Saddles
can be "too low" (whatever that is) and ride just fine and safe. Feel free to
ride you saddle low as you get used to standing at stops, and raise it slowly
if you desire or keep it there. The only issue I can think some folks may have
with a "too low" saddle is knee strain, but proper riding techniques can make
that a non-issue as well.

It sounds like in every other way you delight in your Betty Foy. That seems to
indicate it is properly sized and that some patience and practice will iron
this issue out and you'l have a lifetime together of amazing riding! Feel free
to holler at us with any head-scratchers! Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: New Here. I am thinking of selling my Betty Foy, any advice on value?

2019-04-20 Thread sameness
People sell such bikes here on the RBW Owner's Bunch.

If you still have a copy of the original Rivendell invoice and you have not
made any significant component changes, I would type out those line items.

The invoice will also tell you what size bike frame you have, which is
perhaps the most important detail to a potential buyer.

As Ed pointed out upstream, search for "betty foy
"

and "yves gomez
"

on this very forum and you can get a sense of historical pricing from there.

If I had to guess I would say that you can expect about 50% of your
original purchase price, depending upon condition.

You will likely have a hard time selling to anyone who isn't local without
at least a couple of pictures.

Re: [RBW] New Here. I am thinking of selling my Betty Foy, any advice on value?

2019-04-20 Thread Joe Bernard
Unfortunately bikes really aren't designed for what you're trying to do. If you
can't find a curb at a stop-light/sign to reach your foot out to, then you need
to push your right foot down on the pedal and lever off the saddle as you reach
your left foot down to the road to stop.

Now you should have both feet on the ground and standing over the frame. Spin
the right pedal forward to step on again, then push on it with your right foot
to start pedaling again as you lever back up onto the saddle.

Re: [RBW] New Here. I am thinking of selling my Betty Foy, any advice on value?

2019-04-20 Thread cinzaw
Thank you Doug.

Yup, I want my toes (not whole foot) to touch the ground if I am on the
seat with a slight tilt towards the standing foot. (waiting at stop signs
and such instead of jumping off the bike) I found snugging the spanner
on my Brooks made getting off easier.

I love this bike and am going to try and make it work.

Thanks for the suggestions, glad to know there are choices but I LOVE
my Betty for its quality and ride... it's going to be hard to find a
replacement if I do not sort this out.

Re: [RBW] Re: What're the best cantilever brakes out there?

2019-04-20 Thread Sean PNW
I run Tektro 720s on my lock up/commuter/porteur and they work just fine
with salmon pads, clearing inflated RTPs with ease.

I've Pauls on another nicer bike and prefer them over the Tektro 720s,
they're the best cantis I've used.

However, so long as they're decent brakes, i.e. any of the mentioned
flavors: Pauls/720s/CX70s/CX50s/Older XTs/RH/IRD/VO/etc, my experience has
been that proper set up generally trumps the nuanced strengths and
weaknesses inherent in each particular model.

I'd recommend referencing this when you set up which ever cantis you land
upon, it's a pretty comprehensive overview of the little tricks which add
up to make a big difference:

Re: [RBW] New Here. I am thinking of selling my Betty Foy, any advice on value?

2019-04-20 Thread Doug Van Cleve
Hey cinzaw.

If I'm understanding what you wrote, you want to be able to touch both feet
to the ground while seated on the saddle? If that is what you're saying,
that is not really related to the bike fitting you or not. That saddle
height will also be far too low for efficient and safe pedaling, IMHO.
OTOH, there are bikes designed with a very slack seat tube angle to allow
this and still have adequate reach to the pedals for efficient pedaling.
Electra was the first I know of to do this, but I'm sure there are lots
like that available now...

Regards, Doug
