[RBW] Re: Adding Seatpost QR to Riv

2019-10-23 Thread Rod Holland
I put the Campy QR binders that Mike Kone sells on an Ebisu and a 1982
Sequoyah. Straight-forward installation, good function, and about as pretty as
a binder bolt can reasonably be expected to look.

[RBW] Re: Adding Seatpost QR to Riv

2019-10-23 Thread Clayton.sf
Nah. Those things don't work. I use to tie some string between saddle rails and
seat stays. That made it really easy to find the right height fast after having
lowered the post. But then I got lazy and just high-posted it. Now the mtb has
a dropper and I use it all the time, so I am thinking of giving the manual
dropper another try.

Re: [RBW] Non technical riding gear

2019-10-23 Thread Patrick Moore
IIRC, Rivendell charged a similar price for LS shirts. Expensive, but for
small-run, MUSA garments, acceptable. LLB and LE charge $50-$55, and those
are made in bulk overseas, I am sure. Synthetic LS jerseys in this year's
(or probably, next year's) style can easily go for twice that. And these
flannel shirts are hi tec, not just cotton or wool flannel.

But onward to a relevant tangent: The cycling market is fashion driven;
that's obvious. But it's interesting and comforting to see that fashion
sometimes brings back useful things, when usually it is annoying and even
dismaying for its triviality, expense, and fatuity -- $200 sunglasses? $500
shoes? I realize that top of line accessories might very well be better in
some ways, but I am not convinced that they are $150 or even almost $250
better* than Tifosis. * $300 sunglasses!
https://www.oakley.com/en-us/product/W0OO6046?variant=888392464033 (And
sheeit, how silly they look.) This is like Vogue.

I recall that a couple of years ago The Fashion Market brought back what I
saw described on 1 site as an innovation in technology that allowed better
adjustment of your shoe. That technology? Shoelaces. It' still around, even
2-3 years later!

Me, I hope that flannel shirts and baggy nylon shorts and pants become the
fashion must-haves for 2020, and that Rivendell becomes the vendor of
choice.

Personally, I do pay full retail for good cycling garments if need be, but
not because they are the latest fashions. But I suppose that, if idiots pay
too much for things just because they are new this year, that helps keep
the cycling industry going for the rest of us.

Hi All,

Has anyone successfully added a Quick Release Seatpost binder to a
Rivendell frame?

I feel like I know what I need in general. QR that is long/short enough
that mates with the nut on the other side and some spacers/washers that fit
into the space where the hex bolt head usually sits. What I don't (yet)
know is what exactly I should use. If anyone has setup that they like

[RBW] San Diego Bike Rides

2019-10-23 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Hi Friends,

Last year you all made great recommendations for a family bike adventure and we
had the best time biking The Strand. It was scenic with the ocean just there,
and there was lots of activity and also great lunch spots. I really can’t thank
you enough!

We get a holiday on Friday, so we are planning to run away from home again and
point our vehicle in the direction of California. We are going to hit Sea World
for the day on Friday but Saturday is wide open. Except for our standing coffee
date, of course (hoping for Bird Rock in La Jolla). I’m looking online at bike
routes that would be fun, but if there are any of you who know a thing or two
about San Diego and want to pitch your route, I’d love to hear! We will want a
path that takes us out of traffic (like a paved path inaccessible to cars)
since our two sons will be with us. Ocean or nature views are our jam.

One last thing. For those of you who do not have spouses/SOs who share your
bike passion, let me tell you there is hope. This upcoming trip is 100% my
husband’s idea. (I actually tried to talk him out of bringing our bikes because
I fear they will be stolen.) My husband never cared a thing for bikes, but it
was my birthday so I got to choose our activity and I chose biking in CA. We
rented him an ebike when we rode The Strand, and as a former motorcycle guy, he
LOVED it. It was the perfect compromise. When we got home he found a smoking
deal on a Pedego Intercepter. It’s so ugly. He got panniers, a speaker, and a
phone mount and he now rides with me all over creation with the condition that
he gets to control the playlist. Mostly, we like Saturday morning bike rides
into town for coffee. He came home last week laden with shopping bags and
proclaimed from the foyer, “I’ve got good news! I bought a new wardrobe for our
Saturday coffee dates!” 

Joe,

I agree with Roberta it definitely looks like it belongs on the Clem L. The
red is definitely attention generating initially I thought a more subdued color
would be desired.
Now the color symbolizes for me that the owner is a bike lover first but open
to enhancing their riding experience whether out of need or desire. In my
opinion the pedal assist nature of the Copenhagen Wheel separates into a
completely different e-bike than throttle based versions.

[RBW] Re: Riding and then mountaineering

2019-10-23 Thread velomann
Earlier this year Bikeportland shared this story about some friends who
rode from Portland to Timberline Lodge, climbed Mount Hood, and returned to
Portland:
https://bikeportland.org/2019/02/26/from-portland-to-the-summit-of-mt-hood-and-back-by-bike-and-boot-and-ski-296114

It's been done before. I recall many years ago Dr. Cameron Bangs - a local
internist and at the time probably the world expert in treating
hyperthermia/hypothermia - rode from the Ross Island Bridge in Portland to
Mount Hood, climbed, and returned. I seem to recall his time was ungodly
fast, like 12 hours, but I could be wrong. I do remember he said he climbed
in golf shoes (to save weight) and said he thought he could do it faster
but he ran into sloppy snow conditions. I can't find anything about it on
the interwebs, and sadly Dr Bangs passed away in 2015.

I've summited Hood many times, but have not (yet) done it without driving.
It's such an iconic part of our skyline that I think any local resident in
reasonable fitness should climb it at least once in their life; you'll
never look at the mountain the same way again.

Hey Mark,
Do you have a turn by turn route sheet for the Cold Spring ride? I tried
to get it on the site but as I am a digital moron, couldn't.
Thanks,
Alan

[RBW] Re: Fall Ride Recommendations outside NYC?

2019-10-23 Thread Brad
Hi Mark! You were the one who tipped me off that the ride was possible. I
was prepared to pay the $20 to pass through Mohonk but I rode on a Friday
afternoon and I never found a place to pay. Even at $20, it's a great ride.
One possible issue: Mohonk and Minnewaska are busy on the weekends during
leaf-peeping season and you'll share the trails with a lot of walkers. If
you can ride during the week, the trails are empty.

[RBW] Re: steerstopper experiment

2019-10-23 Thread Julian Westerhout
Tom,

I've been using Steerstoppers on my 64 cm Clem H and our Bilenky tandem
for a couple of years. They're pricy, as you noyed, but they work great. I
use the clem for commuting and shopping with a basket and shopsack, and the
Steerstopper prevents bar swing, bike tipping, etc.

[RBW] Re: Simple, but Dumb, Question

2019-10-23 Thread ascpgh
No.

No dumb questions here. Someone just pointed out last week how there are so
many standards that it's hard to pick one. If all the swirling ideas that
reach manufacturing produce anything, it'll be questions. Even for brake
mounting fixtures attached to the frame and fork.

Jan Heine (of Rene Herse Cycles, Bicycle Quarterly, reader and contributor
here) just posted a blog entry about brake formats:
https://janheine.wordpress.com

Not square on the head of your question, but enough context in the
differentiation between cantilever and dedicated center mount post
locations to answer it.
