[RBW] Re: New ROADEO

2020-01-14 Thread John G.
Fender line is much better now, thank you very much! Just needed an extra
5mm spacer.

Adding to Bill's and Mike's thoughtful description. At no point did Bill
ever say the Roadeo was uncomfortable, but for some folks, the term "race
bike" might connote uncomfortable and aggressive geometry. Personally, I've
found the Roadeo to be an extremely comfortable brevet/century bike, both
physically and mentally. It just sorta handles itself after a while. I
sometimes prefer standard diameter tubing, but I do think the (very light)
OS tubing on the Roadeo contributes to its reliable but lively handling. I
know I often get hung up on wall thickness and tubing, but I really think
geometry and fit make more of a difference than standard vs OS tubing.

And yeah, it's fast. Am I faster on my Roadeo than I was on my Black
Mountain? Maybe a bit, but not so much faster than I get home in time to
kill an extra 20 minutes browsing iBob.

If I ever move this Roadeo on, it will be because I have a
similarly-purposed Weigle that fits just a smidge better. But I also
believe you can never have too many road bikes that fit 32mm tires.

[RBW] Re: The last of the phenomenal Clem H’s

2020-01-14 Thread Jason Fuller
Sorry for the slow response, but thanks for the kind words Tom. It's an
FSA Comet crankset / BB with external bearings, which uses an annoyingly
rare chainring interface - but I discovered through internet sleuthing that
it is the same as a Cannondale spec, which Wolf Tooth makes a spider
adapter for, so I have that plus a Wolf Tooth 38t ring to replace the stock
32t. Not sure what the spindle length would work out to on this setup
since it's all integrated.

Seatpost is the stock one, S65 sounds right? It's about 20mm from being
maxed out. I don't love the look, but the ample standover is nice! I
prefer the look over a step-thru so I'll take the compromise.

[RBW] Advice Needed: Tires

2020-01-14 Thread tc
Steve,
What width rim? How wide a tire does your frame allow you to go?

My quick ranking, having used them in the 38-60mm range:

1. Barlow (38 std casing). Most supple - like butter, quietest, easiest to
mount.

2 G-One (2” and 2.4”) second most supple, very slight hum on pavement, but not
objectionably so.

3. Sport Contact II (42) (I know you didn’t mention). Least supple, but more so
than marathons, least expensive, quiet, fast for money.

I should note my experiences are running with tubes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Can we talk about long wheelbases?

2020-01-14 Thread lconley
I have kind of standardized on the Brooks B68. I have had little trouble
buying NOS Brooks B68 saddles on eBay. I have 2 aged versions - brown with
laces (already broken in out of the box - very comfortable), 1 B68S (black,
shorter version with chromed rails and laces - going on the Wife's Betty)
and 3 or 4 standard black models. The B68S came with multiple laces in
several colors, so: red lace for the Betty, blue lace for the Frank Jones
Sr., and green lace for the Bombadil. I have a leather punch, so others may
get laces also.

I wanted a Honey B68 with chrome rails for my upcoming custom, but no go,
so I got a black B68 frame from Italy on eBay, had it chromed locally, and
sent it to Firth and Wilson - they installed a Honey B67 top (identical in
shape to the B68) with large copper rivets. Took some time and additional
money, but I love my Brooks B678Frankensaddle.

Leah, sadly it looks as though Brooks has discontinued the B68 & B72 saddles.
B72 was my favorite, but somewhat awkward due to the double saddle rails that
required a conventional seat post for the special clamp or an adapter.
The B68 had no springs, but like many conventional Brooks saddles did require a
fairly lengthy break in period.
I think long term the B17 could work on the Clem L, but caution your sister
that Brooks saddles do require breaking in.
I have a C19 on one bike and it initially feels OK, but everyone who's ridden
that bike any time at all says the more you ride it the more uncomfortable it
gets. A bit stiff!
In my experience with the C17 Allweathers the regular one was almost as
comfortable as my B17, but oddly the cut out version was less comfortable. I am
not sure if I want to gamble with the C19 Allweathers or not!?

[RBW] Re: Advice Needed: Tires

2020-01-14 Thread aeroperf
My wife and I used to ride Schwalbe Marathons. Great tires for puncture
protection, but at 730 grams my wife said it always felt like riding
through mud. Never had a flat, though.
We went to Continental Ride Tour tires and they were an improvement - less
stiff and less heavy at 650 grams. She loves them.
I moved on to Continental Speed Ride tires. They only come in one size -
622x42 at 495 grams. I have 5000 miles on my set and I love them.
I will occasionally re-mount the Ride Tours if I want to compare things
like tire widths or chain stay lengths. :-)
IMHO it is a trade-off between weight and puncture protection, and I’ll
take the risk for lighter weight.

Re: [RBW] Advice Needed: Tires

2020-01-14 Thread Patrick Moore
That's interesting that these beefy-seeming tires roll as well as
extralight Compass tires; I guess that what makes the difference is that
they are tubeless? I know that when I briefly ran Kojaks tubeless (ghetto
setup), they felt like the Compass Elk Pass with tubes.

Question: after much suffering and anguish I managed a couple of years ago
to purchase a pair of 559 X 28 G-One Speeds, but I don't see these on
Schwalbe's site anymore. *Do they still make a 26" version?*

(As to my pair, (a) I was then ignorant that you can very successfilly --
so I'm told -- run tubeless-ready tires on non-tubless rims with the right
rim tape; and (b) when I felt those thick and stiff sidewalls, I said,
"Nah!" and sold them at a huge loss, unmounted and unridden. Wish I'd been
as well informed then as I am now. Still, perhaps academic if this size is
no longer on the market.)

Re: [RBW] Advice Needed: Tires

2020-01-14 Thread James Valiensi
HI,
I use Schwalbe’s on most of my bikes. The G-Ones are my favorite tires. I use
them in the road version and gravel versions. I have them from 25mm to 50mm.
The tires seems heavy duty but ride as good as the condom-thin tires. I feel
very secure on the Schwalbe’s and get a great fast ride.

Re: [RBW] Re: Advice Needed: Tires

2020-01-14 Thread Steve Palincsar
No doubt the Barlow Pass ELs are excellent tires.  Question is, though,
what is "one size up" from 700x37C Marathon?  The Barlow Pass are 38mm
and I believe really are 38mm wide.  How wide are the Marathons in real
life?  Some Schwalbe tires are dramatically narrower than the sidewall
rating; is the Marathon one of them?   If it is, will the Bianchi Axis
fit an actual 38mm wide tire?
