[RBW] Before I go order one...I'd like one lock on grip clamp

2020-04-14 Thread Bill Lindsay
I have a bike hack project for which I would like to obtain one clamp, that
fits around a 22.2mm handlebar and is itself as thin as possible. The
clamp that is used with most lock-on grips is perfect. So, if YOU have a
ruined, orphaned, or otherwise unwanted clamp, I'd like to obtain it. I
only need one, and if I can't find one, I'll eventually buy a set of four
from one of the online retailers for ~$12 - $15.

Here is an example of the object I would like to obtain:

Re: [RBW] Re: Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-14 Thread Mark Roland
In my original long ago review of the Clementine, I did point out that it
was not perhaps the greatest apartment bicycle, depending on your
apartment--mine was a 3 floor walkup with a narrow and steep final set of
steps. Manageable, but barely. My Big Dummy I left in the hallway.

But I look at the Clem as I would look at a car. Functional for all
weather, ready to go night or day, able to carry a good load of groceries.
Like a car, it could be parked in a garage, and simply ridden in and out.
If you do have to portage it for a bit, grabbing by the swoop is handy. I'm
lucky in that I can wheel my bikes right into my house, but even there, the
Clem takes up more than its share, which means a bike or three will need to
move on.

It is definitely not a bike you would travel with, outside of strapping it
to the back of your Winnebago. There are plenty of bikes that are good for
that. And I do think the solidity of the bike, and the substantial rolling
mass, is part of its ride quality and appeal. It's a two-wheeled,
non-motorized land yacht, the bicycle equivalent of a Fleetwood or a
Continental. Only with better gas mileage and more fun in the handling
department. Is there a way to put those automobiles on a diet and still
have them be what they are? Maybe. You could leave home without the spare
and the tire iron.

I understand the desire to make the Clem more accessible, easier to lift or
pedal up a hill. For now that's not a huge problem for me, and with the
gearing on the Silver crankset, it may be the easiest bike I have to pedal
up the really steep stuff. So I am good with the full weight of my Clem L,
which is more than 2x what my racing bike weighed in 1991. I think the
prospect of lightening up the Cheviut has greater potential.

But it's all good in the end. I'll be looking forward to reading the
results of this grand experiment!

Re: [RBW] Re: Lighten Up: Clem Edition

2020-04-14 Thread Roberta
Hi, Joyce.

I guess I would really it's makeover "how I would have built my bike three
years ago when I got it, now that I know what I know three years later."
This is actually the build I have in mind for my mixte retirement bike (or
the bike I get when I no longer can swing my leg over my Joe A). I
haven't changed anything on my Joe A since I got it.

We are also swapping out the steel choco moose bars and stem for albatross
heat treated aluminum and a Tallux stem, which I have and like on my AHH.
That will give me a similar rise to the choc moose that I cannot get if I
went with the choco norm. We'll also be changing to a 1x11 from I think I
have 3x8. I usually stick with one chain ring and just go up and down two
or three gears on that one anyway, so it won't feel any different for me,
and trigger shifter (I can hear a collective gasp!). I didn't do that for
the weight savings, but because James and a few others highly recommended
it for a 1x.

It could lose more weight, but there's a trade-off between weight and
practicality. Saddle is changed to B17 from a Flyer (change to non leather
saddle would save even more weight), big Carradice Junior bag will be off
soon. Not sure if I'll go for the Banana Sack (it's my leaning) or just
use a nylon trunk sack I already have. I'll also be careful about not
overloading it with junk. I'm keeping the rack, which is fairly light and
too practical to lose. However, if I wanted to trade the rack, I could get
a lighter one. James recommended removing the kickstand, but I'm not
convinced. I do sometimes stand up my bike in the middle of the parking
lot. We'll see see about the kickstand when I visit him.

So, as you can see, I'm making, what I think, are practical improvements
for performance and weight, without being a weight weenie.

See what inquiring about a $50 tire could do!

[RBW] FS: nicer, longer crankarms

2020-04-14 Thread Joe Bunik
hi gang,

Finally getting back into the personal goals phase of this quarantine
period - rummaging through the garage of course being one of those ;-P

Here are a couple sets of nice square-taper arms in a longer length. I
tried these awhile back but didn't really take to them. No rings, but
I can likely set you up with something as needed.

- Dura Ace FC-7402 / 177.5mm arm length. 130mm double. Some clear
anodization wear and logo-fade, but certainly nothing catastrophic.
$85 shipped CONUS

- Takagi Tourney XC / 180mm arm length. 110/74mm triple. Minor scuffs
but again not bad at all. These were off a 1st gen Stumpjumper, back
before Shimano had a full-blown MTB group (Takagi was a component
maker but in the Shimano family, owned by an uncle???). $65 shipped
CONUS.

Let me know if you're interested or have any questions.

[RBW] Re: For salvage sale, Ibis Cousin IT tandem

2020-04-14 Thread Corwin
Hi Bill -

Great news. Bernie is a great guy. Tried to talk my ears off. Showed me a
significant portion of his work via photos.

I would buy your tandem - but I just bought a high-end Hubbuhubbuh a couple
months ago. My wife would try to kill me.

Good luck with your sale. Hope your Ibis finds a good home! Good tandems
are hard to find.

Namaste,

Re: [RBW] Re: Ideas for very unobtrusive and very QR saddlebag mounting system for non-Brooks saddles

2020-04-14 Thread Patrick Moore
I took a closer look, and with the narrow rails and curved saddle end, you
can't slip a dowel between the rails as you might do on a Brooks.

As for snap hooks: No go either, since the bag has to be snugged up against
the underside of the saddle, which requires using the straps.

But I mitigated the on/off problem by replacing the too short (for this
purpose) OEM straps on the Camper with much longer ones with top quality
buckles; straps long enough to (relatively) easily poke through holes and
wrap around rails, with good buckles, make installation, if not instant, at
least faster and much easier.

Thanks again.

[RBW] Re: For salvage sale, Ibis Cousin IT tandem

Oh my goodness that is a beauty...

Thanks for sharing the photo, Ray!

Just spoke with his wife Mel again. Bernie is going to take on this repair,
fillet brazing the new seat tube in and powder coating it. They quoted a
reasonable price that makes this project worthwhile. I'm very stoked about
this!

I was also was happy to find original decals on chuckibis.com.

Now to find time to disassemble it and drive it Alameda, hopefully within
the next few weeks...

2020-04-14 Thread Keith Weaver
I'll chime in and say that I rode a 50 cm Atlantis at Riv last spring, but
I'm not sure what the wheel size was. My PBH is 78-79 cm, Will said he
would recommend the 47 cm for me, but they didn't have one built up to
ride.

The 50 cm felt great to me, I'm sorely tempted by that CL listing. My issue
is that I already own a Surly Disc Trucker, that has a large amount of
overlap with the Atlantis. I'm sure I'd like the Riv better, but am having
a hard time justifying the new purchase.

My sister puts her large Clem l on her hitch rack one end at a time. That way

Roberta, besides the wheels and tires, I'm curious about the other changes

Leah, I'll be patient and wait until you're ready to announce what
wheel/tire combo you'll be receiving from James at Analog unless the
anticipation is just too much and you have to spill the beans early.

I really need the rear rack for pannier use (grocery getting) and do like
having a basket up front. I realize removing the racks would do a lot to
make it lighter however it still needs to be practical. New wheels should
be just the ticket!

Re: [RBW] Re: Ideas for very unobtrusive and very QR saddlebag mounting system for non-Brooks saddles

2020-04-14 Thread Patrick Moore
One more! Will think about this one also. Thanks.

But given that this sort of big-bag use on this particular (1999 Joe Starck
stripped-down fixie gofast lightweight) will be very sporadic and
occasional, and given that I still hope Chauncey won't take 6 months on the
new "Riv-Road-like errand bike*" frame, I am thinking that, after all, the
solution that may be simplest, most secure, and sufficiently fast might be
simply to replace the OEM straps on the Camper with longer ones, or even
toe straps, and insert these with both ends on the outside of the flap so
that it will be much easier to strap them to and unstrap them from the
Flite's saddle rails. But I'm going to try the dowel suggestion above
first. I expect that one would need to strap the dowel to the frame rails
as well as strap the bag to the seatpost, to keep the dowel sliding
forward; but I'll give this one a hands-on try, and report if successful.

*Just for the record, this is a project that Riv would probably not touch
with a 50 ft pole, even tho' it is to be based on my 2003 road custom,
because it is designed around a hub gear with all sorts of related and
complementary, and all very weird, custom braze-ones and internal routing
features, not to mention custom racks. So I'm not taking bread or money
from Riv's mouths or hands.

Well, I guess I would have lost that wager! I took another gamble and
looked at San Francisco CL, and there it was in "nearby areas"! Yep, MIT

Re: [RBW] WTB: 66 or 68cm Quickbeam frame set

2020-04-14 Thread Birdman
Update: Will found a replacement BB shell and Quickbeam decals at Riv HQ
and they're on their way. I'm in touch with a frame builder friend in town,
who may take on the project. I don't have any details on the work involved,
but like James has said above, it does sound like a big job. I hope he'll
take it on. I think the QB is worth it, especially since a 66cm is so hard
to come by, as long as the cost doesn't go beyond the cost of a replacement
frame set. I'll update the post as I learn more.

In the meantime, James, I'm also curious to know more.

[RBW] Re: Another Clem fender conundrum

2020-04-14 Thread Jason Fuller
Fender installation is an exercise in patience and attention to detail, for
sure. I just ordered a set of Simworks / Honjo 74mm fenders for my Clem H
45 will be interesting to see how I make out with them, as I have to
re-radius them to fit the 26" wheels then shoe-horn them into the frame
(some trimming / forming will be necessary around the seat stays and chain
stays). I've installed a few sets of aluminum fenders now, so I've got the
skill set now, but this one'll be a challenge.

2020-04-14 Thread Joe Bernard
Like buttah, Eric. I was slightly nervous it would be a size too small - you
can see I have a good bit of post and stem showing - but two things worked in
my favor: 1. I need an upright position to accommodate my arthritis so the
toptube length works with a long stem, 2. A ladyperson friend of mine has
recently informed me that all guys lie to themselves about their height. I told
her I was 5'-7" and she said, "Right, you're 5'-6." I believe she's right 

Re: [RBW] Re: Ideas for very unobtrusive and very QR saddlebag mounting system for non-Brooks saddles

2020-04-14 Thread David B
And now you've got me thinking!
Another idea - use the dowel idea but mount the dowel piece directly and
tightly to bag. To mount, have the bag twisted sideways, fit dowel parallel
(and between saddle rails) then twist to fit the dowel on the inside of the
rail area (with bag fitting outside the rail area). Then with a strap
tightly around the seatpost the bag wouldn't be able to twist sideways to
release.

Well, I guess you've considered that; yes it is sort of limited weight
 wise.

Would this be any help? https://www.hobopieces.com/product/the-restuvus

I have one of those on (surprisingly) a Brooks saddle, because the bag
I was mounting has much wider straps than the Brook could comfortably
 take.
The strap holes on these are generous.

I have it on my Bombora with a Nitto R-14(?) rack for support.

Like the Bagman a 55+ dollar solution to what should be a 15 dollar
 problem.

James, is it because in this case the tubes under the lugs are damaged? So
you'd have to replace them?

I'd always heard from Riv etc how repairable lugged steel is, but just realized
how that always assumes the lug itself hasn't broken.

Re: [RBW] Re: For salvage sale, Ibis Cousin IT tandem

2020-04-14 Thread Will Rhea
Hi Corwin,

Just spoke with Bernie's wife Mel yesterday. Sent them photos; they're
quoting the repair and paint. Turns out you can still get NOS decals for
these! http://chuckibis.com/decals/

I liked working with Bernie for the stem - he had me go buy a
strong-looking 1 1/8" quill stem and he then modified it, building the
extension and 26.0 clamp. Great guy, great work, reasonable cost. I'm glad
he's still working, I trust him to do a good job, I bet it will be even
stronger than before 

The plan is to put this up for sale once it's fixed. If anybody's
interested, let me know Buyer can pick the color. It's what they
called a Large/Small, but it can fit a pretty broad range of sizes. I'm
6'3", 90cm PBH and the bars are level with the seat. My girlfriend is 5'9"
but I've had an 8 YO on it before with crank shortenersI don't know
that I'd recommend it for capn's bigger than me, but those with a bit
shorter PBH would probably fit it better.

Cheers,

-br

[RBW] 50cm MIT Atlantis with 26” wheels?

2020-04-14 Thread Pancake
Someone is selling their Atlantis on Craigslist - it has 26” wheels (in the
photos and description) but the frame size is listed as 50cm ... I thought only
the 47cm frame has 26” wheels, is that right or is there some way a 50cm frame
would have 26” wheels?

Hoping it’s actually a 47cm so I can get it for my shortie / wife.

[RBW] Re: Another Clem fender conundrum

2020-04-14 Thread masmojo
Jim, Wine cork & whatever can work & work very well; I've made spacers out
of a variety of things, but what I will suggest in this instance is
something different.

Try threading in a long screw, but instead of a cork or spacer, install a
fairly stiff spring!
The spring will keep the fended in place, but move out of the way should
something get jammed in there OR have a little give should you need it when
removing the wheel..

Cheers

Re: [RBW] Another Clem fender conundrum

2020-04-14 Thread Patrick Moore
It's hard to tell without a full profile view, but it looks as if the
curvature of the fender is too small for the room allowed by the frame.
Besides spacers at the bridges, you can re-shape the fender to adjust the
arc: squeezing the fender narrower will expand its arc. It doesn't take a
great deal of width adjustment to make a considerable amount of arc
adjustment.

Here's a blast from the past.

Bike Buddy allows one to mount a large bottle, vacuum bottle, etc to your
frame's existing bottle mount. If you dislike the look of Voile straps,
this is for you.

https://www.bikebuddy.co.uk/shop.asp

This is the MK3 version which includes the quick release feature.I may
have test fit it but never rode with it, Not even once.

$15 shipped in USA.

Hi Jim,

I have used a wine cork with a long bolt to address this. There is also this
item from Velo-Orange that might help:

You could probably put something similar together with a trip to the hardware

Good luck!
