[RBW] Electrified Rivendells

2020-08-07 Thread maxcr
I bought a Copenhagen Wheel earlier this year, but that bike isn’t getting used
much - less than 75m on it according to the app.

To be honest, I think it was a bad case of upgradeitis- I didn’t need the
electric assist, but it seemed cool. I don’t have an outlet where I store my
bike, so that’s also a problem.

I might consider parting with my wheel or I might put it on my wife’s commuter
- send me a PM if interested, but please note that it would be next month at
the earliest since I’m not home right now.

Max

That title is a bit click-baity though. It mentions "Underbiking with the
Rivendell", but unless Russ cut out the more technical bits of the trail
from the video, riding that route with that Sam isn't what I'll consider
"underbiking"; I mean, the tires are fat and knobby for goodness' sakes!
Underbiking would be riding that route on 23/25mm wide file tread tires
with a 39x23 lowest gear.

If I may paraphrase Crocodile Dundee , that's
not underbiking . This is underbiking

.

Re: [RBW] Re: Electrified Rivendells

2020-08-07 Thread Robert Blunt
Robert is right. Bike designers have to design the frame around the Bosch
drive system shape so it is never offered as a kit. Most people who are
interested in mid-drive systems (systems which help you pedal from the
bottom bracket area) as kits, use the bafang mid-drive motors which are
available in a variety of power levels. Hub motors are a different animal
and aren't as effective in climbing plus changing the tire on a heavy wheel
hub motor can be a pain. But they are generally cheaper and pretty reliable.
Best,
Rob

lithium ion 36V 14.5 Ah made by EM3ev. The do offer decent support via
email inquiries.

My experience is with the Bafang BBSHD mid-drive system you see in my Cheviot
pics, and its moderately less powerful cousin BBS02. Pedal assist and throttle,
fairly straightforward to install if you're a competent wrench..if you can pull
and replace cranks and bottom brackets you can do this job. Mine were reliable.

[RBW] Are there different sizes of 1" threaded headset?

2020-08-07 Thread Jeremy Till
This is the only 1" Fairweather headset I could find, and it's threadless, not
threaded. Is this the headset you bought?

https://global.bluelug.com/fairweather-headset-1inch-matt-black.html

To answer your original question, there are a number of 1" threaded headset
sizes:

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/cribsheet-headsets.html

These days the ISO standard is by far the most common and to my knowledge
that's what all Rivendells with threaded headsets use. But you can still buy
headsets in other standards (most commonly JIS) so it's important to know your
frame and fork dimensions when buying one.

Re: [RBW] Personal 'Grip of the Gods' variations

2020-08-07 Thread Jason Fuller
Cheers Brett! It's denim bar tape from Analog, although I bet you could do
it with the leftovers of a jorts conversion if you don't mind some loose
ends. The denim is great when wet - still just as grippy, soft, and a nice
warmth to it. I live in a very wet climate so that's an important feature
for sure!

Ed, the bars are MAP / Ahearne wide model (605mm). I am quite pleased with
them, the sweep is very ergonomic.

[RBW] ISO Fizik Tempo Microtex Bondcush bar tape, red and blue

2020-08-07 Thread Patrick Moore
A lengthy thread late last year brought this to the top of my list, and it
is now time to replace the worn out blue Lizard Skins on the gofast, and
the durable but hard red tape on the new Chauncey.

Before I buy retail, does anyone have any (deep breath:) "Tempo Microtex
Bondcush" in either "Soft Touch" (sounds like loo paper) or "Classic" for
sale? Or some other brand and model high on both the hand grip comfort (I
use no gloves) and durability scales?

I did get some very nice NIP orange tape recently but I can't see putting
that on either a Ford Blue or Sage Green bike -- will hoard it for the
to-be-Molteni-Orange Libertas.

Thanks.

[RBW] Are there different sizes of 1" threaded headset?

2020-08-07 Thread Ash
I'm building up the new Wolbis with mostly black componentry. Bought a
black colored 1" Fairweather headset from Blue Lug. Dropped off the frame
and the headset at LBS for the swapping. The bicycle mechanic later called
and said the headset was not compatible with my frame. This time I let him
order the right one (I think he said Origin 8). I brought the headset back
and double checked the packaging. It does say 1" threaded. I'm left
scratching my head what additional detail I have to specify if I were to
order a good quality one down the road. Any clues?

Re: [RBW] Re: Electrified Rivendells

2020-08-07 Thread Joe Bernard
Cheviot answers, which will be vague because I don't have it anymore:

1. The braking problem was because of the power of the motor, not an actual
brakes problem. That ridiculous 1500W kit needs v-brakes or discs.

2. I used 650B × 41 Fatty Rumpkins. I never tried full fenders but I'm fairly
confident that's the size limit for running them, I don't know how big a tire
would fit without.

3. My very rough estimate of standover (I had a 55cm frame) is 69-70cm, which
was noticeably higher than my 52 Clem L.

Re: [RBW] Re: Electrified Rivendells

2020-08-07 Thread Robert Blunt
Patrick,
I agree about buying a purpose built ebike rather than a kit. I have lots
of bikes, including two ebikes. I like them a lot, but I like them because
they are well designed and built for specific purposes like hauling large
loads etc. I have a Riese and Muller Load which is a front loading cargo
bike which has replaced my car for many things. I had parathyroid disease
which caused a great deal of muscle atrophy so the pedal assist helped me
become strong enough to use my regular bikes after a while including my Sam
and my Soma Grand Randonneur. Just my two cents.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pondering one 'nice' bike...

2020-08-07 Thread Mark Roland
Those are some excellent examples there, Steve. Thanks for doing the work!

I'm trying to eliminate bikes too. I kind of am, but they seem to be
getting replaced with Rivendells. All of the Hillibike variety, which I
feel is hard to come by anywhere else. I like the utility and the fun of
the Clems.

With the extra dough from selling the Redwood, you could get a nice passle
o' supple rubber:

44 Snoqualmie (file tread)
55 Antelope (file tread)
29 x 2.2" Fleecer Ridge (knobbie)

Or similar from other brands. Get a second wheelset for the Fleecers.

With a slight saddle adjustment, you can get a smidge more seat angle
(really such a slight difference between 71.5 and 72 anyway.) Easily
handles the 2.1" with fenders, drops. Really a vintage mtb drop bar
conversion but way better, with longer stays and more stack. I've never
ridden a Redwood, but I have ridden bikes with the same geometry and wheel
size. In terms of versatility and fun, super hard to beat a Clem. When the

[RBW] Re: Electrified Rivendells

2020-08-07 Thread Joe Bernard
Short answer now for Patrick, I'll work on Dave's Cheviot questions later:
You're going to need a factory built ebike/moped/scooter for rain riding, I
can't recommend any bolt-on kits for that. DIY mounting of motors and batteries
and exposed wires is strictly dry-day territory.

Re: [RBW] Re: Pondering one 'nice' bike...

2020-08-07 Thread Jason Fuller
That is some poor math there, Steve, and I don't see why you need to be so
argumentative. Comparing 23 and 28 is over 20% difference in width. The
difference from 47mm to 52mm is about a 10% difference in width, and both
are well into the "can handle any surface" size territory. "Whopping 5.3mm"
is quite laughable in this case. I'm not saying you can't feel the
difference necessarily, but two things are true: the difference between
brands and models will have a much bigger impact than the small width
difference, and you will be able to do all the same riding on either size.

Oh, and to those who have the relevant experience: taking into account

[RBW] Electrified Rivendells

2020-08-07 Thread Patrick Moore
This thread, along with the consistently very positive reviews of Clems and
Cheviots and other "cruiser"-type Rivendells makes me think about buying
one of these long-stayed, upright Rivs with an electric motor of some sort,
particularly as I progress ineluctably toward senility; perhaps a elegant
Copenhagen wheel?

I myself put fewer than 200 miles on my old car between a mid-January 2020
oil change and mid June -- this is not virtue, this is simply a very quiet
life and several bicycles and living near things; my daughter, Covid-ed
home from college in mid-March, put another ~1,200 miles on it between 1st
May and mid-July.

But for those days when it is windy, or rainy (I have Sou'wester hat and
rain cape and spats), or when I want to carry big loads, an electric bike
may be a real option, and if this bike retains something of the "feel" of
the best Rivs I've already owned, then all the better.

With that windup, will you-plural post photos and descriptions of your
electrified Rivendells? And tell us how much they can carry, and how you
carry it?

Thanks.

Thanks, Joe! Three Qs:

1) What better brakes would you buy for the Cheviot if you wanted better
stopping power?

2) What is max tire width--with and without fenders?

3) What is the step-over height for a 55cm Cheviot? IOW, how much higher

2020-08-07 Thread Jason Fuller
While I should take my own advice when I say this, I think the difference
between 47c and 2.1" is almost all in one's head and you'll be able to ride
either tire in basically any of the same situations and the bike will do
the job. That Redwood looks great and seems like a perfect all-rounder
visually, but I know that for me 73 HTA is getting to be steeper than I
like. If it's stable enough for you, I'd continue to rock that,
personally. If you're feeling the want for something more stable, what
about the upcoming batch of Hillbornes? Hopefully they'll be canti, and
then you'll be able to fit the 47c and to me, that's a pretty ideal
all-rounder size. Among the multitude of great and versatile Rivendells
over the years, I struggle to imagine any being more versatile than the
Hillborne.

[RBW] WTT my Clem L for your Cheviot

2020-08-07 Thread Dave Redmon

I have a front hub motor and 36 volt battery installed on a 52cm Clem L. It's
a nice rig but I had to locate the battery on top a rear rack and handling is
not as stable as I'd like. A 55cm Cheviot looks like it has plenty of room for
a battery low and centered between its top tube and downtube. Any comments on
the suitability of a Cheviot as a modest e rig? If interested in a trade
please contact me off list.
