Re: [RBW] Who is using bike lights?

2020-08-20 Thread Patrick Moore
After I actually read the thing ... Moving legs, not stationary torso --
big difference! Likewise, blinkies and not steady lights. I've read similar
things elsewhere, for example about lights mounted on the legs, which
apparently are more noticeable to drivers than lights mounted on the bike.

I installed reflective "dots" on the cranks of my errand bike, and make
reflective ankle bands a regular piece of night time kit.

During the day, I guess, from this study, the same principle holds.

Re: [RBW] Who is using bike lights?

2020-08-20 Thread Patrick Moore
Bright lights aren't going to help with these idiots, at least during
daylight*. I've had the same thing happen to me; am pleased when I get
close enough to whack the rear fender as the car goes by as I've managed to
do once or twice; have so far refrained from throwing something hard and
heavy.

Nothing but "watch out" helps with this sort of fool, though perhaps a
rigid glare (not necessarily unfriendly; just rigid; I do this) right at
the driver's eye might encourage a bit of self restraint, if you catch the
driver's eye in time.

* At night, entirely unfocused glare, if bright enough (NiteRider arc light
system, eg) in my experience, can make oncoming drivers very cautious; I've
had them scraping the left curb as they went by on residential streets. But
not good for oncoming cyclists, of course.

Great to see another riv lover in Cambridge! I don’t have a Billie bar
available any longer - it’s going to be used on the upcoming Susie. Hope we
get to meet up for a ride with others in the northeast when things
normalize.

Good luck with the search.

better. Shifting can be a little cleaner when the cage radius matches the

Re: [RBW] Who is using bike lights?

2020-08-20 Thread Robert Tilley
Lights aren't going to do anything to prevent things like that. I don't run daytime lights here and at night I primarily use dynamo lights with cutoff and non-blinking non-super bright rear lights. I have few issues with drivers but people here are used to bikes on the road. I do get an occasional driver who does something stupid but it's not the norm. The biggest issue here is distracted driving. Lights won't help there either since you actually need to be looking at the road to be able to notice the lights.Robert TilleySan Diego, CA Sent from my BlackBerry - the most secure mobile device From: jrster...@gmail.comSent: August 20, 2020 4:55 PMTo: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.comReply-to: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.comSubject: Re: [RBW] Who is using bike lights? Re: [RBW] Who is using bike lights?

2020-08-20 Thread Joel Stern
Thanks everyone for your thoughtful replies. I have great info and lights
to now look at. I never used lights during the day, that very well might
change. My old Cateye blinking red light is useless in daylight. I’ve
seen many riders using lights since returning to riding, not a a bad idea
but I doubt it will protect me from testers, which was the cause of my 2010
car accident which kept me off the bike till recently.

Re: [RBW] Who is using bike lights?

2020-08-20 Thread Joel Stern
Some lady coming out of a store parking light decided she could beat me
(going straight on the road) less than 200 feet away. Really pissed me
off. Then on my next turn a white BMW driven by a kid from another lot
came up really fast trying to avoid stopping before turning. I usually cut
through a lot to a quiet area then get on the bike path to a road less
travelled in the quiet suburbs where there are
no shops. Will be doing that again. These drivers are just selfish. I
always look for cyclist to give them right if way,

Re: [RBW] Who is using bike lights?

2020-08-20 Thread lambbo
Hi from NYC; Dynamo lights and a loud bell or two. I use running lights day
and night, not super bright, just normal DYNAMO lights, pointed not into
people's eyes but at the ground. I re-adjust the light if it gets dark and no
one is around, easily by reaching towards my bar mounted headlight and
adjusting while riding. The B tail light has a little reserve and stays on
at lights and whatnot, very useful for not getting run over while stopped and
checking your phone or something.

I think it's really that simple...dynamo running lights that don't blind and
are always on, and a loud bell that you ring every time you cross an
intersection or see someone.

[RBW] Re: 2020 Goals

2020-08-20 Thread Jason Fuller
I stumbled across this old thread when looking at subscribed threads.
Funny to look back at 2020 planning, before 2020 came along and screwed
everything up.

BUT! I said my goal for 2020 was to ride 3600 km, and I'm at 3193 km YTD
already. So that's good, I guess! I am also in the midst of a cancer
fundraiser right now that has me committed to 1000 km for August, which is
a not insignificant part of that.

Commuting isn't happening anymore, I don't see any bike camping or touring
happening for me this year either. But I'm getting out locally, for sure.
A 200k brevet is almost a sure thing, I've been doing plenty of rides in
the 100 - 150 km range.

How's everyone else making out with their goals?

Re: [RBW] Who is using bike lights?

2020-08-20 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
I too am glad you are safe and sound. I second Eric's wisdom, and add that
the super bright flashing day headlights that are more common overload my
bludgeoned brain, and end rides when I've been caught unawares ... not good
for people with neurological issues, and some of them may be driving
oncoming cars.

We are in a constantly escalating "safety" war where "science" studies show
that more sound/light/flash/spin attracts attention so is "safer." Now we
have regular business trucks and trash trucks flashing lights everywhere
they go, cyclists, and even some sirens on non-emergency vehicles, all of
which leads to greater distraction not greater safety. Also, everyone out
and about has a LOT on their mind right now and is very stressed,
complicating the assessment equation at every point of interaction.

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Who is using bike lights?

2020-08-20 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Amen, brother. Problem is that too many riders use “day-rated” lights in the
dark.

Like anything else, with taillights there is a point at which you have too much
of a good thing. No, you don’t need a taillight that’s visible from a mile away!

Regarding headlights, I always recommend a high-quality focused light like the
Edelux, which has a cutoff beam (similar to modern car headlights) that limits
the light that hits the eyes of oncoming cars and bicycles. Most American-made
headlights have a conical beam (like a flashlight) that sends as much light up
into ongoing eyes as it does down to the road. Peter White goes into this topic
in extensive detail on his web site.

Re: [RBW] Who is using bike lights?

2020-08-20 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Joel:

There are many lights out there that will make you more visible to vehicles,
but I wouldn’t bet my life on any of them. I believe there’s more safety in
being aware of what’s happening around you at all times, wearing brightly
colored/contrasting clothing, and assuming that motorists don’t see you.

If you *do* use lights bright enough to be seen in daylight, I beg you to think
twice about using them at night. The new super-bright taillights, when used at
night, make it impossible for anyone to ride behind you safely. All the person
behind you can see is a bright red glow.

I’ve ranted about this before, so I won’t go on much longer here. But … please
be considerate of anyone behind you—and people coming at you on the bike trail
and end up getting blasted by your daylight-bright headlight.

I recommend a taillight like the PDW “Daybot,” which offers a bright daytime
option and a less bright (but still bright enough) nighttime setting that also
provides longer runtimes (because no taillight will work with dead batteries).

Re: [RBW] Who is using bike lights?

2020-08-20 Thread Patrick Moore
Joel: I'm glad you were not hit,

Ads appear from time to time advertising the "brightest tail light" and
while I've not seen any recently I think NiteRider and Cygolight make 2 of
the bright ones. But I wonder if bright lights, any more than neon-yellow
clothing, will make much difference in bright sunlight -- "studies showed"
that clothing color didn't.

What happened?

[RBW] Re: Who is using bike lights?

2020-08-20 Thread Erik Wright
I use Bontrager Flare R (rear) and Ion 350 (front) when I’m out on the open
road for longer day rides. I use a dynamo front and little blinky rear for
city riding. The Bontrager lights are BRIGHT day-rated lights; too bright
for city riding at night, in my opinion.

Joel,

Glad they were only close calls! :(

I use a dynamo hub with headlight and taillight on at all times on the
bikes i ride most -- plus a blinky in the back, and an orange safety
triangle hanging from my commuter's saddle. Pretty dorky, but hopefully
pretty visible.

I like dynamos plus LED lights because then I always have lights without

2 close calls in one day although I have been thinking of changing my old

[RBW] Re: Kickstands and Clems

2020-08-20 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I'm a fan of the Pletscher double and use it on my regular and currently
only rider (a beat up old Schwinn Traveler built as single speed with
700x38(aka '42mm' Continental Speedrides) and Chocomoose bars)) but
one word of caution is that it will limit tire width when unengaged and in
the 'up position.' It simply did not fit my 65cm Clem H with 29x2.2
Continental Mountain-something knobbies. I'm guessing I never tried to
mount the double with the Clem's stock Kendas and likely just kept the
stock kickstand on until after I had swapped the tires... but when I tried
it did contact the edge of the wider knobby tires.

I suppose I could file the kickstand plate bolt hole to allow some side to
side offset and this is certainly an option but I just put the double back
on the Schwinn and I ultimately went back to the stock single leg kickstand
for the Clem which has a more generous outward bend to allow as big a tire
as the frame seems to fit without further manipulation. I'll likely
revisit the kickstand plate modification when my Clem eventually comes back
home to reclaim its status as my main bike. It has unfortunately been in
storage since fall/winter and the pandemic/family/work/life has pushed bike
swaps far to the bottom of the list.

[RBW] Re: friction mode on silver shifters and shimano down tube dura ace shifters slip!

2020-08-20 Thread Bill Lindsay
Yes, many good mechanics know how to trouble shoot friction shifters that
wont hold gears under hard effort

My thoughts are that there is one of two things going on: Either you are
never getting it tight enough, or it is loosening itself up.

The reason you may not be able to get it tight enough is that the bolt that
threads into the downtube shifter boss is bottoming out at the bottom of
the threaded hole. It feels tight in your hand, because it's bottoming
out, but it's not actually squeezing the friction bits any harder. To test
this, tighten it to confirm whether it is possible to make it too-tight.
Can you tighten it to a point where the friction is clearly too firm? If
so, then this is not what is going on. Alternatively remove the shifter
entirely and install only the bolt and observe how far in you can thread it
before it bottoms out. See what that looks like and what it feels like.
If you determine the bolt is bottoming out, carefully file 0.5mm off the
end and you should be good.

If you can get it tight enough, and it transitions from 'tight enough' to
'not tight enough' over a few shifts, then the bolt is loosening itself.
Consider using a not-too-permanent threadlocker. I'd start with blue
Loctite. Also decide if you have parts that don't fit well on the shifter
boss that are free to wobble somewhat, and that wobbling helps auto-extract
the bolt.

If the judgement calls are difficult, find a good mechanic you trust to put
their eyes on it. One other contributor can be excessive friction on the
cable at the BB. Your hard efforts cause the cable to very slightly
tighten and loosen as you flex the frame. The friction between the cable
and the housing or guides at the BB can 'win' in the tug-of-war with the
shifter.

The last thing is to question whether the return spring on your rear
derailler is just too strong. If you are using an RD that is clearly
intended for index-only operation, or one with a known super-burly spring,
you just may have a poor combo of parts.

These are the things I'd go through if the bike(s) were in my stand

Alex:

I have double Pletscher stand on my Soma Saga, which I’ve used a few times for
lightly loaded touring (full panniers). It will easily hold up a bike weighing
50+ pounds.

Another plus: You can take out either the front or rear wheel to fix a flat,
and the bike stays standing on the tripod that’s left (wheel + two kickstand
legs).

[RBW] Re: friction mode on silver shifters and shimano down tube dura ace shifters slip!

2020-08-20 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Check the cable routing, especially the ferrule fit. A minor movement
between the cable and ferrule or the ferrule and a cable stop can sometimes
cause this.
Double-check that there is not a "second" ferrule stuck in a stop somewhere
(including the derailleur).
If the bike was built up with too tight of a cable/housing run, that
sometimes causes that.
Too tight of an arc at the RD.
Derailleur not completely tightened/attached.
Bent derailleur hanger

Since it's happening on two different sets of shifters, the problem is
likely in the cable run or derailleur.
Also, you might make sure that the bike was built up with the proper type
of housing - brake housing and derailleur housing are not the same.

Hope that helps!

- Jim

[RBW] Re: Rivendell has the almost perfect crankset for me

2020-08-20 Thread Mark Anderson
The trike I bought from Utah Trikes this past Feb. came with the FSA crank Joe
mentions. The bearings failed at about 1200 miles of gentle riding in cool,
clean, dry Utah—not an exactly stellar service life. Utah trikes was decidedly
unhelpful regarding any warranty claim as well. The Gossamer bottom brackets
have a pretty abysmal reputation for durability it seems, matching my
experience.

I know Origin8 makes a range of square-taper cranks in shorter lengths, but I
have no experience with them myself.

[RBW] friction mode on silver shifters and shimano down tube dura ace shifters slip!

2020-08-20 Thread Sam Perez
does any one know how to trouble shoot friction shifters that wont hold
gears under hard effort, i have riv silver shifters and 9speed dura ace
down tube shifters that slip on friction mode.

I have done the following only to have the lever loose grip after a few
shifts. (lots of hills)
-tightened the bolt (done)
-tightened the D ring (done)
-adjusted the rear deralure (done)

Mini v brakes that can be used with normal-pull road brake levers. I had
tektros that worked great on a drop bar conversion MB-2. I also had mtb lever
shifters on the top of the bars and I’d do that again too. Room for 42mm tires?

Time to start saving $$!!!

[RBW] Clems, racks and P-clamps

2020-08-20 Thread Alex K
Hey all. Trying to find the perfect setup for my Clem L. I have a Nitto
Campee 34F and a Wald 157 basket currently mounted to my new Clementine. I
love it all, but have been alerted that perhaps the p-clamps aren’t best
suited for long-term use. Thoughts? Advicc? Alternatives? I really love
the 157 for laundry and pizza deliveries. But I’m open to trying a
different rack or mounting setup...

Austin,
I'm glad that you were able to stuff 2.6" tires in that Clem, but I'm
pretty surprised. I've got 2.4" tires in mine and the chain rubs the tire
a bit in the lowest gear on the small ring. It's not an issue and it's not
constant, but when I'm on rough terrain it will wiggle around enough to
where it'll rub a bit. Cool bike man.

(This is with a Silver crankset but if I'm not mistaken they spec the same
BB length for a standard triple so they should be very close)

I think part of your answer depends on your tire choice...

Hope that helps!
