Re: [RBW] Re: Orange bar tape on British Racing Green Matthews RBFD

2020-09-23 Thread Roberta
That looks closer to the other pics you posted. It is a bright orange but I
like the happiness factor. All my bike bags used to be black— very classic
looking. I liked it. Now though, my bags are blue or yellow or another “
happy” color ( I don’t use bar tape anymore). Ride and smile!

When I put together my Bleriot about a dozen years ago, I used black/yellow
Cinelli cork bar tape. Some people hate it, others like it. It's certainly
lasted pretty well - the yellow has faded somewhat, but otherwise the tape
is still in good condition:

2020-09-23 Thread Patrick Moore
Yeah, it's very definitely a neon orange, not a tasteful muted orange, but
I do like it. *However,* the contrast in person is not *quite* as emphatic
as in even the best-lighted of all the poor photos I've taken. Perhaps a
little palm dirt will give it that muted hue so highly thought of among the
more discerning classes.

I am debating whether to spring $$$s for a bright orange seat bag, Revelate
Viscacha style (I use that as model because I owned one), but probably
ought not to; I do have 3 sizes of nice courier bags. I removed the SQR
Slim because I wanted to raise the tail lights (Seculas, one battery, one
dynamo) to bolt them to the rack bosses -- they had been zip tied below --
and even the high-mounted and flattish "Slim" would cover them. A skinny
tubular Viscacha-style bag would leave at least most of the light
unobscured.

Re: [RBW] It's a Bombadil

2020-09-23 Thread Joseph Bernard
Thanks Roberta! The air is clear today so I'm going to get out there and
finally find out how my bike feels, I haven't even ridden it since it came
to me with dropbars that were wy too far away to reach.

Answers to several folk's questions, hopefully I'll remember them all:

The finish is clearcoat over raw steel. Riv did a run of frames this way in
the late-'00s, then probably got tired of people worrying about rust
forming and got out of that game. I see a few rust spots here and there but
nothing alarming and the bike has been in use at least 10 years, I think
it'll be fine here in sunny/fiery California. If I ride it lots and like it
lots I may eventually invest in pretty paint, but it's about to get
fendered, racked and bagged as a shopping bike; I'm probably better off
with the "can't scratch paint that's not there" vibe.

Grips are from Jones Bikes, clear is the softer of the two they make. I cut
off about an inch to get them to fit the Loscos.

Bag is a special "camera bag" (I don't have a camera) made by RandiJoFab
for Rivelo a couple years ago.

Stuff I swapped in after receiving: Shorty Sugino cranks (152), XT fd,
Nitto Losco on Nitto HiRiser, Paul levers and Moon Units, Microshift
thumbies reversed because I use the rear on the left for my "good" hand,
dem grips, dat mirror, Paul gold skewers. The rest was there when I bought
it.

Oh and a new bottom bracket. JL and I both recently went through the
business of removing old stuck Shimano cartridges and isn't *that *fun?!

[RBW] Re: FS: September Blow Out

2020-09-23 Thread Corwin
Hi -

Submitting an FS post to this group is like drinking from a fire hose!

Here is the stuff that's still left:

11) Couple of sidepull brakes. A Shimano 600 "standard" reach, and a short
reach brake. Not sure where these came from. Throwing in the lever in the
picture as well $5 shipped for both.

14) Ritchey 10 and 12cm Threadless Stems. These have two-bolt faceplates.
Not sure about the rise. $10 shipped each.

19) [previously not listed] Soma seat bag. A small bag to hold tools,
saddle cover, etc. Probably about the same or a little smaller than the
Sackville extra small saddle sack - I think it was known as "Kevin's Bag".
$5 shipped

20) [previously not listed] One pair Kool Stop cantilever brake pads. See
the photo. These pads have smooth posts. For old-style cantilever brakes,
such as Mafac. These pads survived my house fire with nothing more than
smoke damage. Discolored the packaging. $2 shipped.

21) [previously not listed] Pair of Shimano M324 SPD Pedals. These pedals
are great if you like to ride clipless and/or in street shoes using the
same pair of pedals. They have a set of Power Grips attached. The Power
Grips are easily removed. Not so trivial is the SPD cleat that came loose
from my son's shoe. Yours for $5 shipped if you choose to sort this out.

Thanks to all for the flood of interest!

Namaste,

Corwin

[RBW] Re: Albatross bars: 25.4mm vs 31.8mm???

2020-09-23 Thread Garth

You could always email any vendor John, or even Nitto. Unless someone
has experience with both bars they may not be able to tell the difference.
Other than Nitto, I'd try the Southerndistributors.uk as I've "heard" Soma
isn't so the best at return emails.

My tentacled 2014 Bombadil was built by both Waterford and Nobilette. The
lugged diagatube frame and fork were done by Waterford and the tentacles

[RBW] Re: Albatross bars: 25.4mm vs 31.8mm???

2020-09-23 Thread 'John Phillips' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks Garth, I agree, the older 56cm Alba's are perfect, especially for
me with wider shoulders for my height. The 56cm bars are much wider up near
the curves than the 55cm bars and so much more comfortable, at least for me.

The 31.8mm Albatross bars are listed as 56cm's wide in both online
stores where they're listed. I couldn't find them in a Nitto catalog, so I
was hoping someone on the list here might have actually seen them "in the
flesh' and could verify they're shape & width. I really would like to put
another set of 56cm bars on my Homer Hilsen, and I'm hoping the 31.8mm
version would fit the bill.

[RBW] Re: Albatross bars: 25.4mm vs 31.8mm???

2020-09-23 Thread Garth

John, I would certainly think the curve of a 31.8/56 Albatross would be
the same as the 25.4 version. I have the 25.4/56 also which I too love,
whereas the 55 was a real downer as the curve radius was indeed notably
smaller in-hand. Nitto should have never stopped making the 56 steel Alba.

Alternatively, someone here on the list mention Doom custom Bars, who
advertises on Instagram. He can make a bar with the same shape as the Alba,
or tweak it any way you want in widths and angles. They are all 22.2 cr-mo
bars, requiring shims for larger stems. $100 for the bars in black, + $50
for a nickel plated version.

[RBW] FS: September Blow Out

2020-09-23 Thread Corwin
Hi -

In spite of the virus, the fires, etc., 2020 has been really good for me. I
seem to accumulate lots of parts. I have no room for them. So I want to
send them to you! All prices below include shipping.

1) Silver friction levers mated to Shimano bar end pods. These are in great
shape and have lots of miles left in them. These are the original Silver
shifters - not the second generation recently released. $10 shipped.

2) Nitto Campee Rack. Not sure which rack this is - but it came off the
front of my son's SimpleOne. $10 shipped.

3) MKS Track Pedals. Great, inexpensive, durable pedals. Also in great
shape. $15 shipped.

4) Vittoria 700c x 25/32mm tubes. $5 shipped for both.

5) Shimano Flat Bar Brake Levers. In great shape. $10 shipped.

6) Park Spanners. 13, 14 and 15mm. One each. $5 shipped for all three.

7) Lumotec IQ Headlight. Plenty of wire here. Was mounted to the Nitto rack
above. Most of the wire ran to the tail light.

8) Velocity Quick Release Skewer. Came on my Hubbuhubbuh. I think the OLD
is 140mm.

9) Tail Light. This went with the Lumotec IQ above. $2 shipped.

10) Third Hand Tool. A piece of ancient history. I used to clamp my brakes
together with this thing to get cable slack, etc. $2 shipped.

11) Couple of sidepull brakes. A Shimano 600 "standard" reach, and a short
reach brake. Not sure where these came from. Throwing in the lever in the
picture as well $5 shipped for both.

12) Skewers from Schmidt Dynohubs. These take and allen wrench. $2 shipped
for both.

13) Riese and Müller Handlebar Mount for Dynamo Light. In great shape. Used
sparingly. $2 shipped.

14) Ritchey 10 and 12cm Threadless Stems. These have two-bolt faceplates.
Not sure about the rise. $10 shipped each.

15) Nitto UI-5GX Threadless Stems. These are some of the most elegant stems
anywhere. Four bolt faceplates. $15 shipped each.

16) 18 tooth cog for your fixed gear. Not much wear on this one. Came off
my son's fixed gear before he rode it. $2 shipped.

17) Nitto R Bottle Cages. These are the light ones. Very sleek and elegant.
The solid ones - not the hollow ones. $20 shipped each.

18) Giant Threadless Stem. Not as pretty as the others - but it's a long
one: 13cm. Two bolt faceplate. $5 shipped.

Photos here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/yQCgqV1kruueocWP8

If any of you are in the SF Bay Area and want to come to my house in
Richmond, California to pick up one or more items, I will happily give them
to you gratis for saving me the time, money and hassle of shipping them.

And if you want to send me money via Paypal - please use czech "at"
sonic.net.

Namaste,

Corwin
