Wow, 75*. I was talking to a client in Chicago this morning who said that
since it was his birthday he was going to take advantage of the (also) 75*
forecast temperature (second time in his 50-something lifetime) and take
his kids out golfing. Meanwhile, here in southerly ABQ, NM, the high was
barely 50* and that quickly slipped back to the upper 40s with gusty winds;
2 light wool layers over the cotton shirt when I rode to the PO in the
early afternoon.

camera) because most are 2 hours ahead of ABQ, NM

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for Front Der for Clem H?

How wide is your bottom bracket? You could widen a smidge and it could
solve the clearance problem, and that would increase your bottom bracket
collection without adding to your front derailer collection. I have a 103
that's certainly too narrow a bottom bracket, and sorry, no obvious answer
about the derailleur, but them's complicated.

Another option if you want an open leather saddle is the Rivet Pearl:
https://rivetcycleworks.com/product/the-pearl/. I have one of these, and
it's rather nicely made - the sides are joined underneath, to prevent them
splaying:

At 170mm wide it's slightly narrower than the B17 at 175mm but considerably
wider than the Aspin at 157mm.

Re: [RBW] Berthoud Aspin - To cutout, or not to cutout?

2020-11-09 Thread SeanMac
I have used both of the Aspin models. I started with the standard model.
It was quite hard and took some time to break-in. However, I ended up
being very happy with it. However, after using it for a few years, some
health concerns made me decide to give the Aspin cutout model (Berthoud, I
believe, refers to it as "open"). I used the cutout this season. At
first, the Open model felt noticeably more "flexible" than the standard
saddle. However, after a short period of adjustment, I stopped noticing
the differences between the models. Quite honestly, I still have the
standard model sitting on a shelf in my basement "just in case" I decide to
try it again or on a different bike. However, I am pretty happy with the
Berthoud Open and will likely keep it on my Black Mountain Cycles Road bike.

[RBW] Re: My First Riv - c.2016 Sam H - Help needed for Newbie

2020-11-09 Thread aeroperf

Bill Lindsay is straight to the point. “What do you mean by…”

Also, bikes are like stereo systems. $$ for a good one, $$$ for a slightly
better one, for a VERY slightly better one. Price goes up
exponentially for parts where you may never feel the difference.

As one who became a bicycle mechanic after getting my first Sam, I suggest:
Velocity Atlas rims/Velocity hubs. Quality without breaking the bank.
Just order a set and have Velocity put them together. Save learning spoke
lacing for your second bike.
Limit your tires to 650bx42. You DID say “all rounder”, so why would you
want beach tires?
You can’t go wrong with Tektro 559 brakes and Shimano BL-R550 brake levers,
as long as you keep your tires around 42 mm and have straight bars.
3x front and 9x or 10x rear. Actual components depend on if you think it
is a road bike or not. Deore MD-M591, Sora FD-3030 works well for me.
If you can find it, the Suguino XD-2 with 170mm arms is a good, basic crank
to start with.

Handlebars, stem, and controls are all personal preference, and you should
be prepared to try a number of them. If you have a current bike that fits,
measure the distance between seat and bar grips, and try to match that with
your stem. I prefer bar-end shifters on albatross bars, but thumb shifters
work, too. I can’t use drop bars, but others swear by them. My personal
opinion is that downtube shifters require too much fumbling around just to
find the shifter.

You need a full set of metric box/open end wrenches for your tool set.
Also a cassette locking tool to remove/install cassettes on the freehub
(Park FR-5.2G).
A pedal wrench would be a good addition, and a chain whip.
With what you already have, you should at least be able to get rolling with
these.

Good luck—

Hard to beat Shimano hubs for quality and longevity, especially taking cost

I would encourage you to shop for complete wheelsets though. Great deals can be

Get good tools! You don't really need "imperial" tools. Only metric.

I recently upgraded to Wera Zyklop tools - amazing. I wish I had done this
years ago. I would have been so much better off. Also, mini-air compressors
that plug into your car are cheaper than floor pumps for bikes at this
point. I have one called "EPAuto" from Amazon. It dials in air pressure to
half a PSI. I'm running 45 PSI right now by the way. Thanks for asking ;)

Paired with this Silca chuck it's amazing for bikes!

[RBW] Re: My First Riv - c.2016 Sam H - Help needed for Newbie

2020-11-09 Thread Bill Lindsay
It's hard to predict how well this is going to go. We see very enthusiastic
newbies jump in with both feet. Some absolutely nail it on their first try,
and others build something, show it off proudly, claim to love it on day
one, offer it up for sale on day ten, and start over just as
enthusiastically on something else.

So, do you actually have a frame on-hand? Is it frame/fork/headset only?
No BB, no nothing else? Or do you not have it on hand? Start uploading
photos to your Google Drive.

On the Google Document you link, you say you have all the tools listed, and
you have none of the parts listed. Is that correct? Are you asking this
group to sell you things? Or are you asking us to tell you what you should
buy?

You need to completely re-think your tires/wheels/brakes strategy.

- I'm 99% certain a 27.5" x 2.22" tire won't fit a Sam Hillborne frame.
650Bx38 definitely. 650Bx42 probably, but not with fenders. 605Bx45
maybe.
- The wider a tire you run, the wider you need your brakes to open up. You
are specifiying non-aero brake levers which have no QR button, and you are
specifying brake calipers with no QR and nowhere near enough reach to reach
around the tires you want, and that have a nutted attachment
configuration. If your Hillborne is a sidepull brake model, you will need
recessed allen mounting and a longer reach, and while you are choosing
brakes you should select ones that will open wide enough for the tires you
are running.
- I don't follow exactly what you mean by 'classic looks' because a bike
with drop bars, a sloping top tube and fat tires looks contemporary to me.
By 'classic' do you mean silver in color? By 'classic' do you mean 'boxy
and non-aerodynamic in shape'?
-if you want to buy a wheelset from this group, the important parts are
that your OLD dimensions are 100mm and 135mm.
-do you really have no local bike shop? Where roughly are you located? I
think the best thing would be to get a test wheelset installed so you can
figure out your tire and brake caliper situation. If somebody local to you
had a wheelset that you could fire in there to test fit, it would do you a
world of good, and posting those mockup photos would be helpful to anybody
who is going to advise you.

I don’t care what you say, it’s time for Christmas. It’s 2020; sweatpants are
the new work attire, home is the new office, sourdough reigns supreme, toilet
paper is precious... and Christmas starts November 1st.

Video of my Christmas Clementine in the second post on this thread...

The pricing on that one did seem a little absurd, especially since it's not
the complete! I guess the inflation demon really takes hold people in times
of crisis...

If they were selling the complete build, maybe...Even then it's only $150
off from the original Riv complete price

[RBW] Re: How to alter a shimano bar pod to fit a microshift 11 speed shifter

2020-11-09 Thread Jamie W
Heya!
Not the exact same, but I've modded a shimano dura-ace bar end to throw a
sram clutch 10speed through its full range. Required an extra 8mm of cable
throw if I remember correctly. I filled off the top just as you were
thinking. There doesn't appear to be any internal mechanism inhibiting the
throw, just the bar pod preventing the lever from moving further. I traced
out an outline with sharpie beforehand to get a nice flush curved finish,
doesn't even look like a mod. I've since seen people shave them for eagle
12sp.

Hi all,

Long time lurker here. I just purchased by first Riv frame. It's a c.2016
Sam H 51cm.

I'm looking to build this out to be solid all-rounder, keeping very classic
styling w/ all its parts. Wanna avoid snake oil purchases– will spend $$$
where truly needed. Also– will be doing my own assembly/maintenance for
lack of a LBS nearby.

I realize this is a lot to ask from you knowledgeable folks– so any help is
very much appreciated.

HERE

 is
a list of tools I already own/list of components I'm looking to buy. Any
and all notes/recs are welcome. Along with any personal tips on assembly.

Re: [RBW] How large of a tire will a Sam Hillborne actually fit

2020-11-09 Thread diekaiser
I have Vittoria Terreno Dry (47) on a Cliffhanger rim and I have minimal
clearance in the rear at the brake bridge. Also, the Paul Mini Motos mini
cable is ever so close to the tire tread. I also ran the same setup on
Velocity Quills and it was a little bit better in both the brake bridge and
brake cable clearance of the Mini Motos. I've also ran the GravelKing 1.9's
(non-slick) on both the Cliffhangers and Quills. Again, minimal clearance,
but it rolled.

 Hey Patrick,

I’d suggest going the Redwing or Chippewa route. The Thursday boots use
poor leather and have stiff soles compared to the other two mentioned
brands. They’re more fashion than function.

Well, this is why I ask my questions. Thanks both of you. I've scratched

Redwing it is.

IMHO Thursday boots are a hard pass. My experience is from years wearing
and working with actual quality USA and Japan made footwear, although I've
handled only one pair of Thursday moc toe boots. Yes, the leather feels
subpar when you've handled many other brands using better tanneries. Just
browsing the Thursday site one big red flag for me is that every boot

last anyone should choose for 5 mile hikes, again IMHO. Speaking of hiking,
the lookalike Dannite sole on the captain boot is not great for hiking and
is again usually used on dress/casual shoes just like the last. A decent
hiking boot will use some kind of lugged sole, even a recessed lug like
Vibram 430 would be better than Dannite I'd think.

It's tough to find a quality boot in the $199 price range these days but I
think you'd be better off with a purpose built work boot with a decent sole
for hiking of another brand. But, what do I know? I've never understood the

Disregard. Upon further examination, it seems that Microshift 11 speed has
to be paired with itself in order for indexing to work. To get around the
color, I kept the pod in a jar of airstrip remover overnight and I'm still
in the process of polishing the lever. So far so good!

Re: [RBW] Looking for 52cm and 59cm Clem H 's

2020-11-09 Thread Mark Roland
Not sure I would be promoting that on the RBW List.

That $1200 price is for the frame, fork, headset, bb, & seat post, exactly
what Rivendell offers brand new for $900. The seller helpfully mentions
that Rivendell is all sold out and not due until spring. And so you know
he/she is a big Riv fan, they have moved on to other Rivendell bikes--so
Rivendells are good, and cool.

I guess if you want to support someone with ethics that include being very
comfortable with price gouging, you could take them up on the offer. Unless
maybe the slight marring of the seat tube is considered beausage and makes
the bike more valuable.

Wow. Gorgeous bike. Funny to think that, in its day, this was considered
out there and wacky. Kinda like the Hillibikes of today. Of course for us
bicyclists that came of age during a certain time period, the classic lines
and beautiful lugwork of this bike will always look right, even with 26"
tires and cantilever brakes.
