2021-02-15 Thread Sal
I'd just like to sell my bike to someone who's not a racist asshole, Mark.
If that goes against the rules of this white men's club I'm sure the
moderators will delete my thread. I don't care what people who enforce the
law ride or read, and I'm not concerned with being perceived as friendly.
I'm sure your existence is generally apolitical because the world already
suits you just fine, but I don't see how that's relevant to the sale of
this bicycle.

[RBW] Re: My Rambouillet Build

2021-02-15 Thread Fullylugged
Jay: I had mine painted in Pelham AL by Nathan Barnes
(https://www.instagram.com/nate_barnes81/). He paints cars and motorcycles
during the week, bicycles (and sometimes plane parts) on the weekend. I
think he does great work and he is very reasonable in cost. I have a PDF of
the decals and had them made by a decal shop in MS. It was pretty
reasonable and there are two clear coats over them on my bike. My color is
actually a past Ford Mustang color called Autumn Gold. I didn't like it on
the cars but I think it's very nice on the bicycle. The cream is standard
RBW same as came on the bike. Msg me if you want more info on decals. I've
helped someone else here on the list as well, but am getting old and
forgetful so I couldn't say who.

Apparently I'm the only one home and answering bar questions today so I'll
offer one more thought:

I've used Jones Loop Bars a few times and like the one longish position
they offer at the grips, but think they're overrated for other positions.
The grab-hold by the stem is useful for climbing kind of a bit, but the
"aero" position forward was too narrow to be of any use to me.

That's all I got, I'm out! ‍♂️

Re: [RBW] Austin Snowpocalypse 2021

2021-02-15 Thread Jim Bronson
I didn't try my Clem, maybe tomorrow. There are only car tracks on about
half of my street here in Leanderthal land, maybe the relatively unspoiled
half would work, worried about the glare ice underneath the snow though.

Stay warm gents, temp has already started to dip here, 17F and falling.

Hmm, I miss the ability to see most of the products in a category on one
screen, then I can click on the one I want to investigate. Now if I go to
Cranks I see one product and have to scroll down through all to see what's
available.

Re: [RBW] Re: Questions about bars and brake levers

2021-02-15 Thread Patrick Moore
Thank you. Also close, but alas, per the photo, does not sweep back enough.

For some reason your post made me think of looking at VO's handlebar
product portfolio (bidniss speek, that) and the Dajia Far Bar (shallow 'n'
short flared drop, 44 cm at hoods), Granola Bar, and Curvy bar might
contend. There's also this, which is intriguing:
https://velo-orange.com/collections/handlebars/products/handlebar-accessory-mount

If anyone can speak to any of these, I'll be grateful to hear from you.
Also, grateful for experiences with the Jones bar.

My bars are so narrow (38 hoods road, 42 hoods off road, 56 cm flat mtb
bar) that sometimes I've not had enough flats space for bells and lights.
(No, I'm not small; ride a ~61-62 c-t road bike with flat tt; just don't
like splayed shoulders.)

Nice Susie, good luck with the sale.

Question, where's "the sticker" from? I'd like one for my bike if I can

[RBW] Questions about bars and brake levers

2021-02-15 Thread Patrick Moore
My Monocog (so much prettier than Leah's Platypus) is surprisingly
comfortable with the stock (at least, that's what I got with the bike as
second owner) mtb bar after I cut fully 8" off of it, but the shortening
also cut off the ends that curved backward, and now there is only a minimal
rearward angle; I'd like more. Also, I'd like more positions, both a sit up
and beg type position and a lower and narrower hard-surface cruising
position in addition to the sit-up-and-beg.

I know that I could get what I need with a longer (say 110 or 120 mm
instead of 90) and higher (say 45* instead of 30*) stem, but the Monocog
has cable discs (which work perfectly well with mtb levers, btw -- no
rubbing, strong, only rather grabby). If I were to swap in a drop bar, I'd
have to change the levers.

1. Jones bar or flared drop or something else? I don't want a bar with huge
rearward sweep and, in fact, if I were to buy the Jones bar I looked at,
I'd amputate all but fistfulls from each end.

2. If drop, which one? I'd like a flared drop for dirt and brush control,
but with slightly narrower hoods that are comfortable when cruising on
flat, hard ground, not hugely wide (of the 6 or 8 flared drops I tried over
the years, from the original WTBs to the an On One bar of some sort that
was far too wide, a 44 cm Salsa Bell Lap was the best, but that was 10
years ago or more. I'd set this up higher and closer so that the hooks are
comfortable on (flat) singletrack, but the hoods comfortable for cruising
with elbows bent, and the flats for situpandbeg.

3. Brake lever question: One advantage of the Jones is that I could use the
existing levers. But for a drop bar, another question: Has anyone
experience using cable *MOUNTAIN BIKE *discs with *NON-AERO ROAD* levers?
Those in question are an old pair of mid-level Campy *non aero* levers.

4. On One Mary? I find the present too-straight cut down mtb bar more
comfortable than the apparently similar Suly Open bar, though.

Ta!

Patrick

Re: [RBW] My Rambouillet Build

2021-02-15 Thread Ben Miller
Thanks for all kind words everyone! Especially Andy in Pittsburgh and Evan
for sharing their gorgeous Orange Ram builds!

Tommy: No, as noted, I bought this frame wy back in 2017 from list
member Keith. It sounds like you bought and sold yours during that time
frame. Which just emphasizes how long I've been sitting on this project.
*Sigh* Yours maybe looks like a slightly darker green? Hard to tell from
the photos though.

Jason: I used grey Jagwire housing for my build. Velo Orange's metallic
braided housing looks very nice, but I had this already. It sounds like
Mark is a better resource for setting up non-aero brakes, I just eyeballed
it. And I don't know the code or official name of the green color.

Bruce: Yes, I do believe my frame is an early run. It also has an
interesting feature of two retaining screws holding on the headbadge. Very
interesting about the lugs! I wonder why Grant changed them. Were they're
any other changes between runs?

Jay: I think you meant to ask Bruce where he got his painted (I haven't
repainted a bike yet). Rivendell has a webpage about painters though,
recommending Rick of D painting and Joe Bell.

Eric: What is the name of that doohicky??

 Hello Fellow RBW Owners,

Wanted to do a little update on my Rambouillet build in progress, now
that it is actually taking form.

First, a little bit of background. I've been lucky enough to have built
up four (4!) Riv bikes already, but this is really shaping up to be a
 truly
unique one for me. This Ram’s story started (for me) way back in late 2017
with me purchasing it off fellow list member Keith as a F/F/HS.
Unfortunately a number of not so great life events happened shortly after
that, including fracturing my leg, taking me off the bike for nearly 6
months. The frame moved with me down a new path in life, but mostly
collected dust in my garage. Not forgotten or abandoned, but definitely a
bit lonely while I worked on 2 more bikes that were more recently
 acquired.
During this time I quietly acquired used parts and ideas that eventually
coalesced into a build for the Rambouillet.

The Ram frame itself is 64 cm painted with a beautiful sage green with
a bit of pearl iridescent to it. It has a couple of small paint chips on
the non-drive side seatstay, but otherwise in pristine condition. It was
 included with a Tange headset.

Previous Rivendell builds had mostly involved me purchasing brand new
components (not having a large parts bin to work off of), I think these
builds were still fun and interesting, but really been driven by new or
recent bike component technology. My vision for the Ram build is really to
focus on used/vintage/NOS stock parts as much as possible, but also fun
 and
practical to me. I know, not a revolutionary design

Very nice looking paint job, love the hand painted logos. To take this

Re: [RBW] Re: 11 speed with Silver DT shifters works great!

2021-02-15 Thread Andrew Turner
That sounds like a very impressive setup! I'd love to see a pic of your
build if you find the time.

I'm glad you brought up the 180 degrees of travel, that's certainly hitting
the limiting factor of friction 11 speed with Silver shifters. While it can
technically travel past 180 degrees (by a lot), I'm sure it'll eventually
find contact with the cable, so VO's 11 speed-specific DT shifter might be
better suited for modern mtb drivetrains or, dare I say, 12/13 speed
shenanigans. I can attest that Riv's Silver2 barends do NOT have enough
travel to hit 11 speed without some dremel work to the barpods.

[RBW] Re: 11 speed with Silver DT shifters works great!

2021-02-15 Thread lconley
I just set up the shifting on my Riv Custom this weekend. I am using Silver
1 shifters with the shiny silver washer covers from Silver 2 shifters
covering the black plastic washer. The shifters are mounted on the
braze-ons on the headtube. The derailleurs are Campagnolo Athena 11s (all
silver in color). The cassette is a Dura-Ace (12-28) 11 speed as is the
chain (actually it required links from 2 chains - long chainstays). The
crank is a Rene Herse 42-26 11 speed. Everything works together great. It
requires close to 180 degrees of shifter travel for the rear derailleur but
that makes it easier to find all 11 speeds. The silver 2s would require
less shifter rotation, but they are kind of big and ugly as a frame shifter.
Now on to making the Rene Herse brakes play well with the Velocity Quill
rims - the Rene Herse brake pads are 10mm wide and the braking surface on
the Quills is 8mm wide. Either surgery on the pads or order Kool Stop
smooth post Cross pads (7.5 mm wide).
