[RBW] Re: What draws you to a single speed bike?

2021-04-18 Thread Joe Bernard
"I am truly curious. How is it different than just not shifting? How is
it more fun?"

Hi Roberta!

It really isn't different if you can stick with it, but I've tried a
hundred times and can't do it. If that next higher/lower gear is available
I'm grabbing it! For me what makes a true singlespeed fun is that
inability: All I can do is hop on and pedal and if I run out of oomph I get
off and walk. It's not my thing these days but I still see the appeal, it's
freeing.

Re: [RBW] What draws you to a single speed bike?

2021-04-18 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Roberta:

If you’re worried about hills, why not try a three-speed? Sturmey Archer hubs
come in a 120mm width to fit “fixie” or “single speed” frames, but also easily
adapt with spacers to fit 126mm (perhaps wider). Set your top gear as your
“flatland” gear and go down from there. Unless you’re climbing something really
steep, you can gear down enough to get over most hills.

I rode fixed for years, then switched to Sturmey Archer’s three-speed fixed hub
(S3X) and them converted that hub (on two different bikes) by replacing the
splined S-A cog with a one-speed freewheel.

Reminder that Tommy Godwin rode 3- and 4-speed bikes up and down England in
1939 through two brutal winters and the start of WWII … completing more than
75,000 miles before the year was out! So yes, long and difficult rides can be
done on internally geared hubs!

[RBW] What draws you to a single speed bike?

2021-04-18 Thread Roberta
I am truly curious. How is it different than just not shifting? How is it
more fun? When I was looking for a second Riv, Will (at Riv) suggested
their single speed (I didn't do it).

I had a 49 lb Raleigh LTD-3 for a few months prior to Riv, which had been
converted it to a single speed. I rode the bike around downtown for
errands. It was tons of fun, but Philadelphia is flat downtown, so SS was
OK. I'd be concerned about any hills.

[RBW] Re: Billie Bar - stem length & wtb

2021-04-18 Thread Garth
JS , without being you, all I can say is go long, a 12 or 13. I have a good
selection of various open face stems so I can try any combo easily. I find
a combo of a threadless adapter and some cheap threadless 0 degree or
greater stems great for fitting and or keeping on the bike to ride. That
said, I'm not a fan of negative rise road stems with a long quill for
raising handlebars, it's self-defeating.

"Upright" is such a cliche' though and means nothing more than saying it.
Unless you're face planted everyone who rides a bike is upright to some
extent and it's always changing. People have different body types,
different flexibilities and certainly different sensibilities about
everything in general. How you're placed over the saddle and your foot
placement has a big influence on the upper body, so just concentrating on
the upper with considering everything else is misleading at best. Bike
riding is a whole body experience, not to mention the "white elephant" in
the room . which is we are not machines...mechanical.. material..
we are to put it blunty Infinity Itself.

Riding for joy of Riding Itself. ... Because We Are.

Re: [RBW] Sam Hillborne frame size?

2021-04-18 Thread James Warren

Jim,

Before Riv started offering frames with 6 degree top tube upslope, the top tube
upslope was roughly 2 degrees. This was the Riv norm from 1994 until whenever
the Bombadil came along (’07, ’08?, I don’t remember the exact year.) Atlantis
had 2.5 degrees, AHH had 1.5 degrees, many other models had 2 degrees.

With those 2 degree frames, my ideal size is 64 and 65 cm, and that’s what I
rode before Bombadil and Hillborne came along with the 6 degree upslope.

Then in 2010, I got a 60 cm Hillborne, I found that I could make that size work
well for me. When they started offering the frames with more upslope to the top
tubes, they called it “Expanded Geometry.” It’s ended up being a really good
thing, because I’m pretty sure it improves the dirt capability.

Enjoy your Hillborne! Amazing frames

Re: [RBW] Re: daily post ur riv

2021-04-18 Thread Nathan F
Agreed Jason, I never get tired of seeing them. I had no clue there were
any Sage Hillbornes left, and am glad to see one built up like that. It's
where I think mine will eventually end up.

For some reason, don't ask me why, to my eye the sage green Sams look
especially good built up with no fenders and with black knobby tires (like
above). Riv used to have one built up like that on the landing page of
their old site. Perhaps thats why I'm so attracted to them? Who knows, but
they look GOOD!

[RBW] Billie Bar - stem length & wtb

2021-04-18 Thread J Schwartz
Greetings
I'm looking to try a Billie Bar on my App and unsure on stem length. I
think I'm leaning towards a slightly more aero position and would like to
have the grip/brake area not too far back. I'd like to set them up so that
position is comfortable and upright but not an issue for steering or knee
hitting. The issue is, I'm not all that long and general ride shorter
stems .
* 9cm for Noodles on my S.H.
* 8cm for flat waive-like bars on my App currently

I don't think the "3rd" position in the rounded forward part of the bar is
something I would use all that often but definitely the area in front of
the levers appeals to me as a primary riding position that sort-of mimics
riding on the hoods of a drop bar.

Does anyone have suggestions on how long of a stem works best with these
bars? My gut is saying 11cm but I'm concerned about purchasing such a
long stem and it feel way too out there. It's a 55cm App with a roughly
60cm effective top tube length

Also if anyone has a Bille Bar they would like to move on, please let me
know
Thank you
JS
