Re: [RBW] Re: 2021 Appaloosa thread

2021-06-20 Thread Kushan
Michael - I am having mine built at RWB. They were out of the Appaloosa
standard 48mm Shikoro tires and so they recommended 55mm Continental
Contact Urban. I don't have the bike yet but given that RBW recommended
those with fenders, I'd say 55mm should fit as long as it's not super
knobby. I'd be happy to send some pics, once I have the bike (who am I
kidding - I am going share pics even if you don't need them :) ).

[RBW] Re: anyone push their altus (m310) to a 36t rear cog?

2021-06-20 Thread Joe Bernard
What Doug said, it should be fine, Shimano rear derailers are usually good
for pushing a couple teeth bigger than listed. I believe - this is math
stuff I don't fully understand - some of the concern comes from if you're
running a wide-range triple crank *and *a big cassette..at some point in
there things get screwy. But most of us don't run triples that way and you
may not even have a big ring, just guard-middle-small. I say give it a
whirl!

I have an 11-36 9 speed cassette shifted by an Altus on my Atlantis. Works
fine. I had a 34 big cog before & didn't change a thing when I replaced

2021-06-20 Thread Jared Wilson
We have two bikes successfully set up with Altus rear with Microsoft 9
speed 11-42 cassettes using the Sunrace derailleur extenders available HERE
 on Rivendell's
website. I think you'd be fine without one on a 36 but that's the next move
if you aren't able to swing it.

[RBW] Re: H/Hilsen (Toyo) tire size

2021-06-20 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
A... just before I posted this, I realized you have a 650B (which is
essentially a Saluki in 56). My comments below the line were for a 700C
Hilsen. I think you'll find any reference to Saluki clearances would be
appropriate.

There is a thread here which chats a bit about Saluki v. Hilsen
https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch/c/5JKIpW9dQTA

In that thread, you will find reference to a fendered Saluki with 42's.

-- 700C comments

I still run Jack Browns (bulky 33 1/3) on mine and there is gobs of room.

On this page, you can see Pasela 37's and plenty of space to spare -
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/hilsen/index.html

Original RR article introducing the 700C Hilsen stated clearance for 40
with fenders. (you'll find a hi-rez archived scan on that page as well).

Not on a Roadini, but I can squeeze 38 gravel king slicks in my canti-Rom

go about 50-55 psi on mine, and weigh in the mid-220s, and they feel

[RBW] H/Hilsen (Toyo) tire size

2021-06-20 Thread Gerard Gunhouse
Greetings
Can anyone confirm or shed light on the largest tire size one can safely
ride on a Toyo H/Hilsen (56 650B) with fenders. I would like to work a
38-42 if possible and don't want to cut it too close for safety reasons.
Thanks much
Gunner

Or, go up one of the 4 or 5 canyons on the east slope of the Sierra. Some
have perennial springs. Indian Wells Cyn, have some beer at the brewery
before heading farther up the canyon. Start early, the winds are relentless

[RBW] Re: S24O near Kernville???

2021-06-20 Thread Mike Godwin
Hi Brnedan

Ya'll better get high (in elevation of course). If it is 110-115 in
Ridgecrest, it will be 105 in Kernville. Take 9 Mile Canyon Road to
Kennedy Meadows. There are campgrounds there, you could use that as a base
camp. Or, Black Rock Station, then a S24O to Osa Meadow or Powel Meadow.
Osa Meadow has a stream in it (it did last year) that goes in and out of
the sand meadow, closer to bedrock are cool pools, deeper sand, no water.
Powell Meadow has a spring at the north end. I car camped at Osa Meadow
last summer, cold nights, its 8500. The big fires last summer burned to the
west edge of Osa Meadow according Cal Fire maps. These areas are bordered
to the north by the Golden Trout Wilderness.

Roads to Osa Meadow, Powell Meadow are drivable in Mazda 3 wagon. Big
Meadow is also 2WD vehicle.

Another cool place is Kernville to Sherman Pass Road (coming into the same
area as above but from the Kernville side), up the hill to Cherry Hill
Road. Do a S24O to Big Meadow and points south. Not sure of how this area
has fared in the past decade with fires. Cherry Hill area got burned 20 yrs
ago or so.

Get the area map from REI, "The Kern River Sierra Outdoor Recreation Topo
Map", Extremeline Productions, 1:62,500, 100 ft contours. ISBN13
978-0-9723361-4-7

Re: [RBW] Trail friendly front fender

2021-06-20 Thread Mat Grewe
Ha, I actually have no camera that takes clear photos (old laptop and cheap
flip phone, both unworthy cameras). These were taken by a friend who was
honing in on just the fenders. So it may be a while before full bike
photos for this machine exist. And when I am away from internet (don't
have internet at home) and these conversations, I don't seem to remember to
get a photo...

The bike was built to also have room for wider knobbies. Unfortunately the
builder messed up a couple things in the rear triangle, so I am limited to
50mm tires instead of the requested 57mm, although the front has the
clearance I requested. I'm fine with it really, I pretty much only run
50mm slick tires anyway, at least in the summer. I still may put on a
wider knobbie front tire if I end up doing a longer off-road tour, but I
really have had no issue riding rough roads with 50mm slicks. Winter I do
put on studded, lightly knobbed tires.

My old bike had well installed Honjo fenders with 25-30mm clearance and I
had numerous issues, even with slicks: the afore mentioned cowpies, leafs
and mud, snow/ice buildup, and a stick flipped up into the spokes of my
front wheel and nearly collapsed the front fender. Thankfully that didn't
happen, but the stays still got bent and required a fix. Na, even with
slicks I am supremely happy with the homebrew front fender. And I forgot
to mention, it wasn't my idea. I got the idea from a MTB forum where the
guy made it out of coroplast and zip ties, but this is arguably stronger
and more elegant than what the MTB poster deemed "fugly."

Re: [RBW] Re: FS Grilver 52 Clem H

2021-06-20 Thread Doug H.
I do like the two bolt design of that stem especially with wide bars that
allow a good bit of torque from pulling. I had to really tighten the single
bolt stem on my first Clem with the Bosco bars. I would have jumped on an
Atlantis in a heartbeat had one been available recently when I bought the
Clem H frameset. Although, the price of the Clem is nice and it seems close
to the Atlantis geometry, just without some of the lugs. What don't you
like about the other Rivendell models?

[RBW] WTB: Giro Rumble, discrete colorway, size 10 1/2 American-equivalent

2021-06-20 Thread Patrick Moore
I blathered about walkable shoe and pedal combinations, and one option was
a more walkable SPD shoe. Someone suggested the Rumble, and reviews said it
indeed is better for walking than many SPD shoes (doubtless including the
old Shimanos I wore to church today that make one hobble instead of
striding.

I can't find my size online. Can anyone point me to a size 44 or 45,
whichever is closer to a US 10.5, assuming you know how Giros fit, in
non-alarming colors? (I say "44 or 45" because I recently got a pair of
cycling shoes, not Rumbles, in 44, and they fit like 9s, and a pair of 45
Sidi touring shoes, and they fit like small 10s.)

Or, advise me on another made and model of SPD shoe that is comfortable for
light hiking and standing around.

Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Riding in rain - Why not?

2021-06-20 Thread Patrick Moore
Yes, ponchos, please! Sure, I live in a desert so what do I know from rain,
but really, when we do get a bit of our annual 9", it tends to come down in
buckets, and I've ridden in real gullywashers wearing a cheap Campmor
poncho (which I like better than the more expensive Carradice ones I've
owned), and stayed dry between neck and knee, even when the rain was
accompanied by very strong wind.

The last I looked, Campmor no longer carries their cycling poncho, so I'm
glad I bought one when I did. I replaced the annoying leg loops with a
stack of large washers at the rear to keep the tail down.

Thanks for the very nice photos.

Re: [RBW] Trail friendly front fender

2021-06-20 Thread ascpgh
Grant has said DS photos should place the right crank at 2 o'clock,
inviting your first pedal stroke.

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet tire clearance

2021-06-20 Thread ascpgh
Mine is still 8-speed, although purely friction, bar ends (switched from
Shimano to SunTour) with Shimano XT Hubs13-32 cassette, TA Zephyr crank
with 46/34 rings, SKF BB and Mavic front and rear derailleurs.

My Honjo H-47 fenders and Paul Racer brake calipers have been my updates. I
consider wheels to be consumables after after so many years/miles. There's
also the pesky rear dropout replacements and the seat stay bridge that had
to be rebrazed. Not been a commuter, although I did ride it to work a few
weeks last summer, but ridden through lots of conditions. When I have a
plan in place for a big ride I don't let weather deter unless it's just
plain foolish.

[RBW] Re: FS: Bike commuter bags + jacket (Chrome, Timbuk2, WaterField)

2021-06-20 Thread CMR
A few price drops:

-Chrome Storm Cobra rain jacket – Medium/black, new never used. $45 shipped
CONUS

-Chrome backpack – large and high quality. Used maybe five times, looks
brand new. I think made for messengers, lower height so easier to look at
traffic when riding. $55 shipped.

-Frye Logan flap brief case. I had a leather worker add a nice zipper to
inside of the opening, pictured. Great condition. Costs $528 new from the
site, I am asking $120 shipped. Happy to delete this if Mods think it's
off-topic.

-Timbuk2 backpack. Used regularly for a short commute but it doesn’t show.
No stains or big marks, it has held up really well. Lower height so easier
to look at traffic when riding, also has integrated reflective tape. $35
shipped.

-WaterField Designs Bolt briefcase, chocolate leather on waxed canvas.
Lovely bags made in San Francisco by a company run by a cyclist. They even
make musettes! $279 new, I am asking $140 shipped. Great condition.

-Camelbak blowfish. Rough shape, needs a patch or two. Free with any of the
above bags.
