Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

Rode the Platy late this afternoon, temperatures were hitting the triple
digits, the wind out of the South felt like you'd opened the oven door to
check on the pie and I was soaked through with sweat. At one point I looked
down & saw that curly heart cut in the head tube lug and it made me smile
for the rest of the ride.

That's all there is to this story but I wanted to share anyway.

That opinion is nonsense. I've been using the R559, and it's predecessor
the R556, for 20-odd years, and haven't had any problems with brake flex or
being unable to stop, including touring in high mountains.

Re: [RBW] Cycles Grand Bois Centerpulls vs Tektro R559

2021-08-23 Thread Paul Richardson
i can't speak to the direct comparison, but i've been riding 559s on my
homer hilsen for a decade without a complaint. i find them perfectly able,
even in the rain or on questionable / mountain bikey terrain (the kind of
rides where people ask my least favorite question: "how are you making out
on *that thing*?")

you might look into the paul racer as a centerpull option? i've only used
the racer m, but it's a mighty fine brake, in my opinion.

good luck

Re: [RBW] Cycles Grand Bois Centerpulls vs Tektro R559

2021-08-23 Thread Eric Daume
I've never used the GB brake, but I've found the R559 to be particularly
weak. The long arms flex so much, I had to set the pads at the very bottom
of the brake track so the brake pads wouldn't hit the tire as the arms
flexed up during a stop. And in the wet, they barely stop at all.

Super long reach brakes are a bad design. There is a reason Riv is moving
towards V brakes on their new frames.

I can't say I notice a difference between the R559 and 750 brakes. My
Tournesol has an R559 front caliper and 750 rear caliper, and they feel
pretty much the same to me, with much the same braking effect for the same
hand pressure. Koolstop salmon pads on both, and the brake levers are
Campagnolo.

2021-08-23 Thread Brenton Eastman
Hi all,
I bought my Sam Hillborne built up with Grand Bois centerpulls (with the
stirrup for mounting on the brakes bridge, not posts). I have been sort of
disappointed/concerned by the stopping power. I take my Sam all over the
place, and probably descend on some trails that blur the line of MTB
territory. I have seen people with Sams (sans canti posts) running tetro
R559, and Riv's own site sells them. I'm just wondering if making the swap
would buy me some stopping power. The Grand Bois brakes are beautiful, and
twice the cost of the tektro, but I would prefer some downhill peace of
mind over prestige and good looks. Anyone have opinions or experience with
either/both?
Thanks,
Brent

[RBW] WTB: Nitto Albatross Bars

2021-08-23 Thread Jacob Smith
On the hunt for nitto albatross bars - ideally heat-treated alu vs CrMo but
could go either way. Final piece for finishing up an Atlantis build.

Anyone holding? Ideally in Bay Area.

Cheers,
Jacob

2021-08-23 Thread Miles
Nice write up Bill,

Adam, like you, I find I also need a bit more fuel than what Bill was
carrying. For me, electrolytes are crucial, I seem to get cramps pretty
easily. I’ve been a big fan of Nuun hydration tabs.

Food-wise, Clif or Ivan bars are always good, but sometimes I also like to
bring a pb sandwich, or some other “real” food. I’m guilty of going full
gas-station nutrition and eating beef sticks and peanut m’s, probably to
my detriment. I think my ideal century has a proper lunch stop about
halfway through. Maybe a good burrito or a sandwich, and a stretching
session before getting back on the road.

Re: [RBW] V-brakes needed or a recommendation

2021-08-23 Thread Mathieu Brown
Good morning Ray,

Having spoken with The Team as my Platypus build comes together (with 700c
x 47 tires and fenders) my understanding is that clearance is the main
consideration. I personally went with Deore V brakes, based on their
recommendation (which cost a little bit more but not much) (and I know
Deore brakes are not available a-la carte on the site ))

I imagine that Alvio's should work just fine - especially at the price
point. It might not hurt to give the office a call tomorrow morning, if
clearance is a concern.

Happy to hear from someone with additional experience.

stell frame, lots of clearance and 650B wheels seems like a nice setup. I
never rode one but my guess is that it could be a great bike if your wife
is comfortable on it. The 1x setup is pretty good with a wide range of
gears and they are using a sunrace cassette which have better gearing than
Shimano does.

[RBW] Marin Larkspur - any thoughts?

2021-08-23 Thread Den John
Hello all,

My LBS has a Marin Larkspur 2 in stock. When I saw it in the shop, my first
thought
was that it's a knock-off of the Clem-L or Platypus.

https://www.marinbikes.com/bikes/family/larkspur

I'm interested in this bike because my wife has expressed an interest in
gravel riding/easy mountain biking, and this looks like a relatively
accessible way to get into it. A Rivendell isn't really feasible due to us
being in Belgium, the way Rivs sell out within minutes of going online,
etc. etc.

There's a short review of the Larkspur on Path Less Pedalled, seems quite
positive and gives the impression that it's quite well suited for what my
wife wants her bikes to do - utility with a bit of off road at the weekends.

My other idea was to find an old mixte/low instep mountain bike frame and
do it up as a PPR (Poor Person's Riv), but all the ones I found so far are
pretty nasty low end mid-90's BSOs, and all in stupidly small sizes for
some reason. It's easy to find quite nice Mixte frames, but they tend to
have limited tyre clearance so they probably won't work so well off road. I
think it'd be less trouble to just go for the Larkspur in this case.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Marin?

Cheers,
Johnny in Belgium
