[RBW] Re: Landmark LBS Closed

2021-10-02 Thread Craig Montgomery
Hallejulah Jim. A great belated eulogy for a good man and teacher. I
remember before Sheldon there were books (remember those?), one or two
magazines, and some really great catalogues (Kitching/Cyclopedia). They
really helped those of us who couldn't countenance the mod-stretch elastic
racer dude mentality (Velo News? Meh). Proto-iBobbers.
Just sitting here, some names come to mind, like Sloane, Ballantine,
Forester, Cuthbertson. I still have a couple of Englishmen's books who
wrote as if cycling was a culture, Nigel Spencer's The Art of Cycling and
Reg Shaw's Let's Go Cycling (both from late 40'/early 50's). Roger St.
Pierre's The Book of the Bicycle ('73) and the Krause's (husband and wife)
The Bicycle Book ('82). Bicycling (mag) was good way back when. We inhaled
all this disparate knowledge from anywhere we could. Usually in magazine
form, or from libraries (remember those?), or book stores. Then along came
Sheldon and put a gigantic chunk of this knowledge between the Q and the M
of our keyboards. He turned on many a light and quickly (at the speed of
light). When I got my first real computer that could hook up with the net I
would spend hours perusing him. It took a while for the wife to understand
what was going on. She'd ask, "What are you staring at so intently?" I'd
answer, "I'm mind-melding with Sheldon."

Thankfully, the Sheldon Brown website is continuing on.
His wife, Harriet Fell, and technical writer John Allen will keep it going.

Long, slow exhale.

Holding an eagle to the east in memory of an amazing person who left us too
soon.
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/eagle.html

There was a phrase, before this list, before Rivendell was more widely
known:
AASHTA

"As Always, Sheldon Has The Answer"

Back in the days of Usenet, when dealing with a technical cycling problem -
heck, even building a wheel from scratch - was a
17th-level-mason-guild-craft-mysto riddle you had to solve through elusive
scraps of information (and certainly no online videos), there was one
person who consistently wrote copious, logical, detailed answers to
technical bicycle questions: Sheldon Brown.

He set the standard in assistance, all from the back room of this shop I'd
never visited in Newtown Mass. Back in the days of dial-up.
Rec:Bicycles:Tech (and a dozen other sub-topics in Bicycles) was an oasis
and generations of riders owe him a serious debt. By his own admission, the
Harris Cyclery folks let him tinker around and play on this crazy
experiment of internet "discussion groups" long before it was widespread.
But we are richer for those decisions. It has a lot to do with how riders
became aware of stuff other than "what the pros ride!", learned the history
of the sport and bicycles in general, and it coalesced the perspective of
many of us who realized the sublime perfection of the bicycle in its most
basic form. It is part of the foundation of this list, to be sure.

There were so many articles, you cannot scratch the surface - it was the
original archive.

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/tandems.html

He is the one who finally nudged me into trying a fixed-gear
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/fixedgear.html
"Coasting is a pernicious habit"

His technical knowledge ran deep. No, deeper than that. His humor to his
last days filled the world. One of my favorite chuckles was when he
photographed Grant at the Bridgestone booth at the 2005 Interbike.
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/lasvegas/2005/

I feel very, very lucky that I am out of retail these days. Running a high
service, knowledge-based store is a very difficult challenge when you can
get stuff delivered in 4 hours from a warehouse across your state. Layer on
that the constraints of doing business the last couple years and you have a
very tough equation to solve. It's why remembering and supporting those
quality organizations who hang in there is so important.

I'll admit this hit me unaware. But, it has hit me. Didn't realize they had
shuttered.
I guess I'll go pour one out, as the kids say. Thank you Sheldon. Thank you
Harris. You have blazed a trail and kept it clear. Now it's our turn to
continue.

2021-10-02 Thread Willet Mather
Glad I'm not the only one who misses Velouria and her Lovely Bicycles.
With sincere apologies to our own Jason F., I must say in all honesty that
Velouria's (not her real name, we know) images of bicycles and bags and
lugs and rustic stone cottages in the Irish countryside and wool sweaters
(oooh, the wool!) are, collectively, the most beautiful picture stories
I've seen anywhere on any topic. The colors and the textures and the
weather and the dramatic (imagined) backstories that arise from her
compositions and her posing and facial expressions-- the whole package made
me log in to her site every day for a month just to see the one posting
that might show up during that time period. She is (or was, I guess) the
Dame Judi Dench of bicycle chronicling, who told more of a tale with each
frown or gaze off into the distance than a hundred paragraphs of exposition
could possibly explain.

I do hope she's found fulfillment knitting in front of woodstove and making
patterns and raising a family in County Donegal or wherever else she
currently calls home. Best wishes to her and her family.

[RBW] Re: Clicking MKS bear trap pedal

2021-10-02 Thread Jayachandra Kura
I have a pair of MKS Bear Trap Pedals - they're the best! I've run into the
same issue before and it was just caused by the right pedal developing some
play.

Its just a cup and cone style hub, so it should be fairly straightforward
to remove the play/click as long as you have allen keys/metric socket
wrenches. It'd probably be good idea to repack both pedals with grease as
mine (and others) have come pretty meagerly greased straight from the
factory. I would advise against dripping tri-flo into the cup and
cone/spindle area as that would thin any existing grease and might
aggravate the clicking sound.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, then I wouldn't invest in the Park Tool
CWO-1, I've heard its what the professionals use to open their can-o-worms.

Hope that helps

That place is so amazing. When I lived in DC, I would head to that
Bikeshop to window shop. Just an amazing amount of steel frames.

[RBW] Stolen Rivendell Bleriot

2021-10-02 Thread Tara Guertin
Hey everyone! I just wanted to post that my Rivendell Bleriot was stolen
out of my downtown San Francisco apartment building. It had a tweed saddle
bag and silver rack and green handlebar wraps . I know its a long shot but
if anyone hears anything my cell is 917-626-3593.
Thank you!

Re: [RBW] Roadini or Homer

The Homer will be 'heavier' or stiffer in terms of feel than the Roadini; I
actually find the Roadini too stiff for my riding style.

Re: [RBW] Re: Show Me Your Roadeo!

2021-10-02 Thread Karl Wilcox
@Tim... I also have a 93 pbh with a 84cm saddle height.  I decided that the
63cm Roadeo was just not large enough. I do not like elongated stems
(vertical or horizontal). I got the 2018 Roadini instead. It fits
perfectly. My only gripe with the Roadini is that it is too stiff for my
kind of riding (club rides that can be kind of fast). I prefer more
lateral compliance in my bicycles, and the Roadini is just stiffer all
round than I like. I will be selling it. It rides wonderfully, but
compliance is not its cup of tea. My SOMA San Marcos which is really
identical to the Roadini has more compliance-- perfect for long distance
stuff and gravel. I will keep the San Marcos. It seems that Grant
perfected frame design in the Roadini and the San Marcos: long head tubes
and sloping top tubes for us tall riders really improves comfort
immensely. My old Riv 'Redwood' was a great bike, but the stem was always
too low, and I really do not like the 'stuck up' stem look.

[RBW] Safety on the littered trails

2021-10-02 Thread Pete P

It’s that time of the year to be careful about riding on trails with leaves
and STICKS. There have been a couple times in the past when a stick would
get sucked up my front wheel. I managed to stop in time before it crumpled my
fender and possibly jam into the fork crown and cause me to crash.

Safety tabs come standard on Riv’s plastic fenders.I have these on my other
bike. My Atlantis has Gilles Berthoud stainless steel fenders with 5mm
aluminum fender stays. I thought the PDW safety tabs wouldn’t fit but my
email question to them was returned and YES the hole would fit 5mm stays
perfectly. So I measured two times and cut once on each side of the fender
stays and this is how they look.

Re: [RBW] Re: Brevets on Rivs -- 2021 Dillon Beach 200k

2021-10-02 Thread Ryan Stanis
Bill,

Alway love to see rivs out on brevets! I have a similar set up to your
Roadeo on a Circle A Cycles frame, 32s but *with* fenders, that is not my
go-to rando bike, but I find it a nice change of pace sometimes. Little bit
zippier feeling than my larger volume tired alternatives. Longest i've
done on the Circle A was 300k, but am currently improving the build on it
to hopefully complete our local SR series again next spring. Have yet to
complete a brevet on my Sam Hillborne, but will be taking it on a 100 mile
dyno ride down to Cape May NJ, then another 50 miles up to Atlantic City
later that day. Not the best test as the biggest hill will be crossing the
Benjamin Franklin Bridge over in to Camden, but will be a nice long time to
spend with Sam regardless!

And second your shout out to Ruth Works! Ely makes some great bags, and he
was hugely supportive of us as we got our new bike shop off the ground here
in Philly!

[RBW] Rivendell Redwood size 65cm

I am looking for a 65cm Rivendell Redwood frameset. If anyone on the RBW
list has one to sell or knows of one that might be sold, please let me
know-- I purchased a new Redwood some years ago, but I got the 68cm, and it

[RBW] Re: Will Rivendell shifters work on Paul Thumbie mounts?

2021-10-02 Thread EricP
No. I tried. You need the center post which the Paul doesn't have.

The Sunrace mount will work, but the center post supplied is too short. One
needs to use either a Shimano bar end center post or something similar.
Just went through that whole issue on my Sam Hillborne. Ended up just using
it as a bar end shifter.

 Hi All,
Does anyone have a pair of the new Rivendell thumbshifter mounts they
 are willing to part with?

 Ray

I'll also note that where local folks are concerned, I'm fine to sell as a
complete +/- the lighting system.

Thanks.
