Hello RBWOB, I offer for sale my well loved Heron Road Touring in size
57cm. This is a wonderful riding bike that I’ve actually bought twice. I
regretted selling it the first time and luckily bought it back. It’s
currently not getting the use it deserves and if I’m being honest with
myself it’s not perfectly sized for me so I’m letting it go. The feel of
this bike is livelier than my double TT Sam, but not as quick as a
 Romulus.
I will say that I used to live on a ridge in the Seattle area with a short
18% grade that I commuted up daily. This bike I always felt would climb in
a higher gear than any other bike I commuted on. If memory serves right
 the
tubing is Reynolds 531. Herons were designed by Grant Peterson and built
in Wisconsin by Waterford. Bike is located in northwest Indiana an hour
outside of Chicago. Asking $1200. I’ll cover packing by my lbs, you pay
 actual shipping.

This bike is in used but not abused condition. It has some scratches in
the paint and isn’t perfect but still looks very nice. There is a dent in
the area of the right down tube shifter boss. Is was damaged during
shipping. It doesn’t affect the ride that I can tell and it being steel
 I’d
feel confident leaving it this way for the remainder of its life. However
 I
contacted Waterford about a repair and received this reply from Richard
 Schwinn himself:

 Worst case scenario:

 Replace downtube/bosses: $250

 Repaint: $700.

If we can pull out the dent, replace the boss and touch up: Figure
$4-500. Unfortunately we'll need to replace the decals because the blend
 will overlap.

If you repaint, it's your opportunity to try a new color (though we
have the old one as well.

 Thanks

 Richard

As was advised and you may want to double-check, make sure there's grease
in the seattube. Of course it may just be a new Brooks breaking in (if you
have one), those saddles used to drive me crazy until I adopted the same
position as minor rattles in my car: "Yep, that happens."

Re: [RBW] Re: Suggestions for better braking?

2021-12-21 Thread David Person
I've found that rims with machined sidewalls (Velocity Dyads and Quills)
provide much better breaking than rims that do not have machined sidewalls
(VO Voyagers, Grand Bois Papillon). FWIW.

That's just the prettiest bike ever!

As for having 3 Rivs that's pretty much the bare minimum around here, some
of us would consider it a starter package. 浪

Keeping the Clem: Don't ever sell it! It has the sentimental value and all
that pretty red and orange ano and it's supposed to be with you.

Re: [RBW] Re: Did Rivendell publish a Hillibike catalog?

2021-12-21 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Keith; noted about the spec limits of those bikes. I'll be
interested to hear of your experiences as you continue to modify yours. And
yes, nothing like a test ride.

But fully 3" 622 tires are non-negotiable in my instance, so I'll
regretfully rule out Hillibikes. Add to this another commentator's opinion
that the Hillibikes do not lend themselves to a pedaling style that favors
saddle-back, torso-forward, low-cadence torquing at low r's pm; and that is
the way I ride, particularly since the hypothesized bike in question, a
Monocog replacement, would be geared at about 65" yet still have to
negotiate sand up to 4" deep.

Keith: Thanks for this, very good to know. You said that 75 mm tires
(2.95") fit with ample room to spare on the Susie Longbolts; thus true 3
inchers -- 76 mm -- should fit at more than a pinch; right? (That's a
 question, asking for an answer.)

So, I hope that the Suzy is a true option for a sand cruiser, as far as
tire width goes. Next question: You say, Rivs encourage seated pedaling.
This worries me, because I like high-torque, low-rpm pedaling, and this is
not for chainstay reasons, but rather because I find it more comfortable --
I feel more efficient torquing at low rpm, and I run out of breath when I
sit and twiddle uphill; even in my breathless senescence, I like shoving
back behind the bb and shoving forward on the pedals. Doubtless much of
this is habituation; I used to be a twiddler who would maintain 21-23 mph
over long distances on the flat in a 64" gear; but even in these years I'd
rarely used the lower gears on my cassette, and very clearly recall
standing to climb while shifting down just 5 or 10 gear inches under my 65"
 - 70" cruising gears (now, 25 years later, my cruising gears are more like
7--75"). At any rate, I like to torque, and find 60" a nice climbing gear
for moderate, extended climbs (Tramway). I don't want a frame that makes
standing and honking awkward. Can you elaborate on your observation and on
 my anxieties?

Also, I fear bars too high. I've always been more comfortable with a
sufficient bend between hips and thighs, and the few times I tried High and
Close the bike has felt tippy, awkward, inefficient, hard to pedal. Note:
this over decades of bike setup. Can a Susan be built to allow a
 comfortable forward-lean position?

Must look up the Scapegoat. Would you kindly post a photo? But I dream
of the superlative Rivendell handling with a bike that will take 75s and
let me shove back and torque

Re: [RBW] Creaky Creaks?

2021-12-21 Thread Patrick Moore
Now that you mention it, yes, I've had pedals cause this sort of
elusive cadence-related creaking or, in my case, more of a clicking.
In this case it was a pair of ancient Dura Ace SPD pedals, and I
solved the problem by regreasing them (simply unscrewed body from
bearing core, filled bearing space in body with grease, shoved
bearing/spindle core back in and tightened down: Robert
Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury's yer uncle!

One more tangential but wholly not-unrelated incident: I acquired a
sudden, rhythmic "click" while pedaling one particular bike, and could
not find the source. After long fretting, I tripped over the reason:
the aiglet on the slightly too-long lace of my left SPD shoe -- which
I had just started wearing in preference to the Velcro shoes I usually
wore -- was hitting the dt water bottle cage.

[RBW] Re: WTB/WTT: Paul Racer Silver (for black)

2021-12-21 Thread JohnS
Hello Taylor,

I have a pair of Racers in silver that I would like to sell. I was planning
to convert my Surly Pacer to 650B, but I didn't like the look or ride, so I
gave up on it. So the brakes are nearly new, only rode around the block
with them. The reach is too long for the Pacer, so I may as well sell them
to someone who can use them. I'll PM you with the details and pics later
today.

Victor may well be right in his diagnosis, but just in case, because I've
found them myself to cause elusive creaks that occured in time to pedaling
rhythm.

1. If the creak occurs while seated, try tightening or greasing the mating
interfaces of the seatpost in the frame and the seatpost cradle.

2. Try tightening the handlebar clamp, or grease the bar-to-bar-clamp
interface.

2021-12-21 Thread Victor Hanson
First; was the bottom bracket faced and chased prior to BB installation?
That's 98% + the most of the time culprit.

Secondly, its the old school method of doing, assuming the BB was faced and
chased, is the fixed side snugged in with blue loctite?

Get both of those criteria right, you should have no sound.

[RBW] Creaky Creaks?

2021-12-21 Thread Philip Barrett
Trying to diagnose a problem here, there's a creak when I apply a more
powerful stroke on the Platypus. It sounds like it's coming from the bottom
bracket area but of course, hard to tell when I'm riding. If I'm just
spinning along it doesn't appear.

So far I've checked the bottom bracket (tight & smooth), tightened up crank
arms & chainring bolts and basically gone through the rest of the bike
checking for anything loose but the problem persists & maybe even getting a
little worse.

Any ideas?

Thanks for telling the story. No, 3 Rivendells is not excessive...don't
tell let anyone tell you different! Your Platys are gorgeous! I do like
this latest iteration even though I'm normally a silver component kind of
gal. The green and gold accents with the mermaid colour really pop!

Enjoy and I hope you enjoy your new location!

The panda look requires you to mix the black and silver parts between the

I have an incoming A Homer Hilsen and a set of mismatched Paul Racer

silver front Racer brake to sell or trade for a black one? Also happy to
buy a complete set if that's preferrable.

If not, the panda look is cool now, right...?

3. Whats your gearing? I love a 1x set up that can get less than 1:1 with a

Re: [RBW] Secret Platy

2021-12-21 Thread Dorothy C

Congratulations Leah, I am so happy for you. I know what it is like to buy
one Rivendell and love it so much you don’t want to ride anything else. My
first was an Appaloosa, followed by a grey Roadini which is now on long
term loan with my sister in Wales, Then a Cheviot, then a chameleon Clem
(irresistible color), and finally an orange Roadini. I have them all set up
differently for different purposes and ride them all equally.
Your build is stunning.

[RBW] Secret Platy

2021-12-21 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I’ve gotten questions about my no-longer Super Secret Bike, so I’ll answer
them here, and attach photos (which you may have already seen on Analog’s
Instagram or the Mermaid thread). The photos are courtesy of Analog. I
don’t yet have the bike. It was ordered in May, and only now have the parts
arrived to make it a whole bike.

I made the decision to make my pair of Rivendells a trio this summer. I
made a new goal to run more errands by bike. This was a challenge, because
as I’ve said before, the hills/mountains in Vegas are punishing. My
raspberry Platypus is set up with only a saddlebag support; I wanted to
keep that bike unburdened. The Clem is heavy, and putting a load and then
pedaling up the mountain was miserable. So, a 3rd bike, a mixte, with racks
and bags was on my wish list. A bike I could load up and lock up, and not
worry about. The Rosco Platy was rumored to be arriving in July, and I was
hoping for one of those. But news came that they would have beefy tubing
and were delayed indefinitely, so I gave up that idea.

It occurred to me I could try for another Platypus. But the presale was
long over and the new Platys were all living with their new owners. BUT, I
found one dealer who had a 55 mermaid frame sitting in the box and no one
had purchased it. I bought it had the frame sent to Analog and they did a
complete build for me in their trademark colorful style. We went with an
earthy look; greens and golds on that mermaid paint. We mixed up the brake
colors (one side bronze, one side green) and had a lot of fun with colorful
spoke nipples and valve stems. The lime pedals slay me. SON makes colorful
lights, so we added those as well. And best of all, I got to try Garbaruk -
prettier cogs and pulleys might exist but I’m doubtful. This is my first 1x
build. The front and rear Nitto racks were saved from previous bikes and
will be installed with the lights mounted on them. I will add olive
Backabikes on the rear and a Goldilocks Fanny to the bars.

Since the bike was ordered, major life changes have occurred. We moved to
southwest Michigan last week, and the Clem would be no trouble on the
elevation here. This 2nd Platy is now probably superfluous. But, I’m still
overjoyed to have it, and like the other 2 bikes, it will get plenty of
miles. The winter has been mild so far and in between the chores of setting
up the new house and unpacking our things, I’ve been out on some brief
rides. People here keep telling me I need a “beater bike” for the winter,
but I just like riding my Rivendells. Should I tell them this is my beater
bike?

A common question I get that I’ll address here: Why don’t you sell the
Clem? Or let it be the utilitarian bike?

The Clem will never be for sale. It’s hopelessly sentimental to me. I know
it’s hard to believe I’d care more about the Clem than the fancy mermaid
Platypus, but I do. That Clem is a hug. Everyone should have one.

Three Rivendells is my limit. No more bikes, ever. I’m set!

[RBW] GBW specs?

2021-12-21 Thread Wally Estrella
This info was listed on the Riv Susie page:

"These numbers are important:

seat post: 26.8mm

FD clamp: 28.6mm

Standard 1" threaded headset (included)

73mm bottom bracket shell"

Aside from headset difference of 1-1/8" on GBW is everything else the same?

TIA!

Wally in Maine

[RBW] Re: Mermaid Builds

2021-12-21 Thread Wally Estrella
Roberta,
What a lovely bicycle for sure! I'm glad I went with the mermaid over the
orange for my Gus. Besides I'd get questioned with "You have an orange
bike already (the Quickbeam)!"

I won't spoil anything but there are indeed some really great cycling bits
in there! It's available to purchase on streaming services as of this week.

[RBW] Re: Suggestions for better braking?

2021-12-21 Thread ascpgh
Not of the reach of your Sam but my Rambouillet was considered to be a
pretty far reach bike, specified for the longest reach caliper out there at
the time which was a non-group Shimano part. They were fine and I replaced
stock pads with something similar when necessary but I was alarmed by a
long descent in pouring rain that came up during a local charity ride. It
was like there was no braking at all.

I went beyond different pads and got a set of Paul Racer center pulls
center mount version with the salmon pads and all is well. I have to admit
I was in the market for more clearance around the tires so I could better
size fenders to cover the 32mm tires that I found made the bike handle its
best. Midlife crisis for my Ram: new calipers, 32mm RH EL tires and fenders
that covered them with adequate clearance and didn't rattle during braking.

I didn't undo the bars either, just modified the housing run and stop at
the seat tube lug and replaced the cable. There's some Rambouillet in the
Sam's blood.

[RBW] Re: Suggestions for better braking?

2021-12-21 Thread Fullylugged
I run the tektro and RBW Silver branded version on 2 bikes and have no
issues with them. On downhills, I am in the 30 - 40 mph range often where I
live and ride, so stopping power is good to have and I've not felt like I
lacked it. I replaced the original pads with Salmon on one bike and Aztec
on another and both are better than factory. A third bike has Mafac
Professional Centerpulls and it has greater stopping power than the
calipers. Old school, but works nicely. I set mine up so that there is
very little lever pull prior to pad contact. I use the Tektro levers on
all of these bikes.
