Re: [RBW] Re: Going around in circles with shifters.

2022-10-15 Thread Ben Adrian
Just wanted to check in. I've been using the SIlver 1 shifters as bar ends
for a while. Overall, things were good, but I did have some ghost shifting
under torque and something just seemed less than precise. For the record,
I've been using my Ultegra 6500 RD with a hanger extender to get up to a 32
on the back.

I took my bike to my list member Jason's house to use his hanger alignment
tool. It was a little better, but still had some issues with ghost shifting
under torque. I noticed that there was a little left-right play in the
derailleur hanger bolt interface.

So, I happened to have a 105 R7000 RD (11 speed) kicking around. I put that
on with no idea if it would work. Surprise, it works really well. Silver 1
shifter, 11 speed RD, 8 speed cassette, 9 speed chain.
I was still getting occasional ghost shifting, especially on larger cogs.
Much better, but still not perfect. I felt like there was stil a little
cable play and imprecision on the rear... Like it sometimes settled into a
position.

It was raining today, so just for fun I mounted the shifters on the
downtube again. I'm getting pretty quick at this. The improvement felt
dramatic to me. I'm using off brand shift housing, and I don't know how
well the housing is sitting in the shifter pods. I just have a feeling that
something is amiss in that the pod to housing to cable stop interface.

So, I'll roll with this for a while until if and when I get annoyed by
something. I'll pull my cable housing from under the tape and try some kind
of alternate routing if I get restless on the next rainy day.

Now I'mjust having fun.

Cheers!
Ben

I believe this is about the bronzey green 45cm L for sale elsewhere here.
That's not the current generation which has a longer ETT and 650B wheels,
it has 26" wheels and should match the grilver one I had at 57cm effective
toptube.

Fold them into 1/3 the original size. Kind of like folding a windscreen

Re: [RBW] Tire shipping advice

2022-10-15 Thread Ray Varella

To fold a wire bead tire without damaging the bead is what we used to do
before folding tires were ubiquitous.
With the tire horizontal in front of you, reach under the the part closest
to you (we’ll call that 6:00 o’clock), slide your hand all the way across
(let’s call that 12:00 o’clock), reach up over the top and as you pull that
portion of the tire towards you and you get about 2/3rds of the way across,
flip the other two ears over and you should quickly end up with three
loops.
Does that make sense?
I don’t think I have any wire bead tires here to make a video but I’ll
check.

It’s a very easy method and because it’s forming something like a figure 8
with an additional loop, it doesn’t crease or kink the bead.

[RBW] Chris King Open House

2022-10-15 Thread velomann
I know this kind of bike bling doesn't appeal to everyone on this list, but
after a 3-year absence, Chris King opened their doors again today for a
small custom bike show and bike geek hang fest. I always enjoy the heck out
of this event, and it was even sweeter for us to all gather again in person
post-pandemic to celebrate bikes and riding.

The event is used by CK to showcase the new colorway - it's kept pretty
hush-hush, but supplied to the custom builders, who design the bikes to
showcase the hubs/headsets/bottom brackets. It might be difficult to see in
the pictures, but the new colorway is a matte finish dark gray/blue. I
forget what they call it. Depending on the light it looks almost black or
dark navy. Very subtle and subdued compared to some recent colors.
Consequently, many of the builders chose raw or anodized titanium, or
various shades of blue (The Best Bike Color IMHO).

But the highlight of the show was the students from our local Benson
Polytechnic High School showing off one of their custom frames and talking
about the program. They currently have 25 (!) frame jigs, and a full class
(including several female students). The instructor is a former United
Bicycle Institute instructor. Each student gets to build (and keep) their
own frame. Really inspiring!

You can get creative with how you cut cardboard boxes into different
shapes. If you find one big enough to lay the tires down in, you can use a
razor/box opener to cut down the corners of the box and then trim the flaps
to the size you need. It's really hard to explain and it's something I
messed up a few times before I could do it well (I work in a golf shop that

Otherwise, you could try to find unwanted TV boxes or cardboard boxes that

[RBW] Re: For sale, Suntour Superbe brakes

2022-10-15 Thread Greg J
First of all, the OP says these are nutted Superbe 47-57mm brakes with
Mathousers. Not superbe pros.
Second, the hidden spring Superbe Pros are very nice brakes,
notwithstanding that one or more people may not have found them to be
perfect.
Third, dual pivots may be superior in some aspects, but these Superbe
brakes do not lack for anything.

Shifters are sold, hub is still available.

Before anyone squanders their discretionary income on bike parts…$25

I don’t know where or when I acquired this hub, if anyone buys it I’ll
include a rear XC-Pro grease guard hub in never built condition BUT, the
hub had its axle chopped with a hacksaw, it’s about 130mm. It’s a freewheel
