Re: [RBW] Re: Gus and Susie ride off into the sunset

2023-02-01 Thread Kim Hetzel
The Clem Smith Jr.s' will be back in April. That's wonderful news. I
thank-you very much for the information. I appreciate it.
In the meantime, I can close my eyes and imagine my lime olive frameset is
a RBW blue color. Obviously not when I am cycling on my Clem.

I contacted the seller of the $3900.00 Clem Smith Jr. "L" out of Portland,
Oregon last night. I asked him/her, if there was interest in selling the
frameset/fork/headset/BB. I got this response:

" Possibly.
Someone is coming to look at the bike tomorrow. I’ll probably give it at
least a few weeks before parting it out.
I’ll keep you in the loop / you’ll see it posted if i wind up going that
route.
(Obviously if for some reason you wanted to buy frame for $3,000 the answer
would simply be yes.)"

I thoroughly agree with you that the seller's pricing is very extreme by
$1000.00 too much. If it were a Gus or a Susie, I would completely
understand.

I would rather wait til April to buy a new Clem, rather than a used one at
this point in time.

[RBW] Trade: Paul Canti for Paul Love 2.5 levers

2023-02-01 Thread Eric M Cardella
Looking to trade my *short-pull* Paul Canti levers (black) for *long-pull* Paul
Love 2.5 levers (also black).

Hit me up for photos. The Cantis are currently installed on one of my rigs. I
would rate them 8.5/10 in terms of aesthetics and 10/10 for function. They are
lightly used (two short, sub-weeklong tours) and spent most of their lives in
my garage. Once I clean them up, I’m confident they will look good as new!

Not looking to sell. I want the Paul levers, but ones suitable for long-pull
mtn brake calipers, without some sort of wonky adapter.

Eric

[RBW] LF 58 Homer

2023-02-01 Thread Bones
I've had a 61.5 Homer from the latest batch for just over a year now, and
although I love the bike, the reach is just too great for my purposes. I am
pretty much forced into swept back bars, and that is not what I am looking
for with this bike. After a call to Riv and a peek on bikeinsights, it
looks like the 58 would give me the perfect reach, with just a little extra
seatpost showing. If anyone has a 58 from the latest batch they'd like to
part with (or upsize), PM me. A 61.5 from the previous batch would work as
well, though I am partial to the DT shifter braze-ons on the newest batch.

Thanks!
Bones

Re: [RBW] Re: Jobst Brandt thought experiment: What would he ride today?

2023-02-01 Thread Patrick Moore
I expect Jobst would not choose carbon fiber, but I wonder if an
intelligently designed -- ie, a good balance of light weight and strength
-- carbon fiber frame would be less likely to crack under someone as big
and powerful as he? Is this a use where carbon fiber would be better than
steel?

If he was climbing mountains even in the 47 X 24 he must have climbed
standing; tremendous force, I guess, on crank as well as frame.

Patrick "not a materials scientist at all" Moore, whose bike he just rode
has a higher low gear than Jobst's (56") -- have to try it on some alps.

[RBW] Re: Jobst Brandt thought experiment: What would he ride today?

2023-02-01 Thread Drew Saunders
I remember on r.b.tech Jobst said he ran a 47-50 half step up front with a
modified "ultra 6" 13-24 freewheel in the back. He took a 12-24 7 speed and
removed the 12 so that it would fit on a 126mm OLD hub that was more evenly
dished, so that there was only space for a 5 speed or "Ultra 6" freewheel.
Basically, a 120mm hub in 126mm of space, if that makes any sense.

Later, he admitted he didn't really half step all that often, so he was
going up those Alpine roads in a 50x24. My knees hurt just thinking about
that.

I only met him briefly once, and I was trying to figure out why a bike with
what appeared to be only one chainring had a front derailleur. He always
rode yellow bikes to make it easier to find cracks in the frame. At 6'7"
(2m) tall, he expected to break frames.

I'm sure he'd be using a "one by" today.

The only time I've seen Tom Ritchey around here is when he blew past me
like I was standing still while we were both commuting home one evening.
Dude is fast!

Hey Kim, believe it was in a Riv email over the last couple months that the
Clem will be back in April! Not sure if that was frames or completes

That one for sale is nice, but $3900 seems a bit crazy. I’d sell my Susie
for that and it’s a nicer build!

Re: [RBW] Re: Jobst Brandt thought experiment: What would he ride today?

2023-02-01 Thread Mackenzy Albright
For some reason I thought I had read that fillet joints were lighter and
stronger than lugs. If I recall quite a few concourse des machines bikes
were fillet vs lugged. I just assumed it was more tedious construction
because you have to fille joints as well as it's easier to overheat tubes.
I love lugs but love the looks of fillet brazed when I see them. Especially
older Ritchey MTBs.

But that is not the question that seems to have been posed. As I
understand the question, it is if his prime days were now, what would he
 be
riding - basically not a silent generation member, but a later millennial
or early gen-Xer, but still a mechanical engineer, still concerned with
reliability, and dare I say it, under-biking. So maybe he still ends up on
a metal, rimmed braked bike. I think it may be easier to eliminate some
things, I don't see him with electronic shifting, that just adds more
possible unrepairable-on-the-road failure points. I want to say no disc
either - as it adds stress to the fork and reduces the reliability of the
front end of the bike. I kind of envision him on a stripped down 80th
anniversary Rene-Herse or Rivendell Rodeo, or possibly some sort of
 titanium frame.

I am a mechanical engineer also, but a boomer.

[RBW] Homer FS

2023-02-01 Thread River Bailey
Sadly I can't afford this at the moment, but maybe someone else might be
interested in this Homer I just saw on Craigslist in Chicago...

I don't know anything about the details but it sure looks sweet!

2023-02-01 Thread Patrick Moore
Not Jobst, but I recall reading somewhere a remark by Skye Yeager that
Coppi climbed the cols in a 46/19. Funny: watching old pro racing, the
riders grunt up hills at 20 rpm and spin out seated in sprints at 160 rpm,
whereas it's the opposite today.

Re: [RBW] Re: Jobst Brandt thought experiment: What would he ride today?

2023-02-01 Thread Patrick Moore
I'd be interested to hear others' opinions about this; I hope it's true --
ie, I hope fillet brazing is one of the stronger joining methods. Ideas?

Chauncey Matthews used bilaminate construction on my Matthews 1 (Fat tire
road bike) and all fillet brazing on the 2020 road bike.

Speaking of which: Blast from past? As I Googled bilaminate construction
just now, the top entry in a page of irrelevant biochemical links just
happened to be this:

http://www.halletthandbuiltcycles.com/methods.html

Richard Hallet, frame builder, prices in GBPs. Can this be the by now very
old Richard Hallet who for decades owned World Champion Bicycles at the
intersection of Lead and Yale SE here in ABQ, NM? He was a curmudgeon, but
he had the best collection of important old bikes that I've seen, including
a pristine, probably repro boneshaker and, in the window, an 1890s men's
cycling costume that, he claimed, he repeatedly refused to sell to the
Smithsonian. I got onto his good side and he took me a couple of blocks to
his warehouse where he had a huge collection of museum-quality historical
bikes, including a track frame used by Reg Harris. He also showed me a
new-in-box Cyclo rear derailleur, the rod-and-pulley model, notable as much
for being NOS as for being a Cyclo rod/pulley rd. He retired and left ABQ
circa 2002 -- I gave him a broken Orbit tandem just before he moved.

Does anyone know?

Re: [RBW] Re: Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-02-01 Thread Richard Rose
Hello Kim. Too soon to tell. I have yet to complete the build. I am waiting on cables. It is complete enough for me to pedal (slowly!) around the driveway & down the street to check fit & get a feel for it. I think I am very close - it feels very familiar. I am trying to duplicate my position / touch points from the Clem. It’s a bit tricky going back & forth between bikes with measurements. The Gus sits higher off the ground - higher bottom bracket & bigger wheels. Same saddle on both bikes, B17. Bosco bars on both, 550 steel on the Clem, 580 aluminum on the Gus. Saddle position nearly identical on both bikes. Gus is longer so I have a shorter stem (parts bin) on it - 80mm vs. 135mm on the Clem. I think I need a 100mm for the Gus as the reach to the tips is about 2.5cm shorter on the Gus. All that said, it feels fantastic. I am very optimistic that it will be a blast to ride on the MTB trails I frequent. When mounting the Gus I do miss the true step through Clem. I need to work on my hip flexibility! But the Gus feels a bit stiffer which I think is a good thing for singletrack.Sent from my iPhoneOn Feb 1, 2023, at 10:25 AM, Kim Hetzel wrote:Hi Richard, How does your new Gus feel and handle ?Kim HetzelYelm, WA.On Wed, Feb 1, 2023 at 6:22 AM Richard Rose wrote:Been meaning to post a few pics.Sent from my iPhoneOn Jan 30, 2023, at 4:34 PM, Slin wrote:Takashi - Thanks, I just built up the Platypus for my wife. I can't wrap my head around the gearing in the pictures Jeremy shared. Good
lord! He was pushing some big gears all the way to the end.

I think fillet brazing allowed him complete freedom of frame geometry and
tube sizing, without compromising strength (vs. lugs). I needed somewhat
different geometry and tube sizing on my custom, due to my weight and
lng torso, and that resulted in a fillet brazed bottom bracket as there
were no readily available BB lug. From what I think I know, fillet brazing
is stronger than TIG, as it spreads the stress over a greater area. I think
I also read once that fillet brazing is sometime used over top of TIG.

I think I’m going to wait for a 60cm and honestly I need to sell or trade
my Jones LBW first, not only for the Atlantis money, but more importantly
just to keep my wife happy
Again, Thank You So Much!

My hunch is that it'd be a tad too small, but wanted to add one more
comment before you give up: You mentioned wanting to wait for a 60cm, but
there actually wasn't such a thing in this era Atlantis. Even though they
came in the normal-for-the-time 2 cm increments, there was an odd 3 cm jump
between this one (58) and the next one (61). Standover and some other
dimensions took an odd turn at that increment. You should fig up the old
geometry charts from Jim's Cyclofied website to make sure it would work -
or that this one wouldn't (assuming you have your heart set on this
vintage.)

I remember this all too well, because I wanted one so badly, stared at the
charts forever, and tried to rationalize buying one even though I fell
squarely between sizes. I was convinced it was some sort of conspiracy by
Grant, that started with the missing size 57 cm XO-1 years earlier. I
never got the Atlantis, but did end up with a 60 Ram, a 60 quickbeam, a 60
Saluki and 60 All Rounder... because I couldn't have "the one." They all
fit me great, but the Atlantis just wouldn't have. (FWIW, I'm 6'-1 1/2"
and have an 87 PBH. All torso)
