2023-12-13 Thread Julian Westerhout
I'm impressed and/or depressed at the sight of lovely Hunqs being ridden in
snow and ice. In the middle of Illinois we get snow and ice but always
accompanied by lots of road salt. I commute in those conditions on an old
Schwinn High Sierra set up as a 1 x 6 with Marathon winter tires with studs
-- and stop only when I have far better traction than the cars (that's when
i fear being squashed by a sliding SUV- on those rare days I'll take the
bus). The horrible road salts (and my twice-a-season cleaning of the old
Schwinn) are slowly eating the Schwinn alive , but it is sacrificial, and
my Rivs are not. I envy those of you who live in climes with little or no
salt on the roads -- I remember fondly the winters in SW Colorado in the
1990s when I lived there -- no salt, only cinders in the corners.

[RBW] VBC chainring swap?

2023-12-13 Thread Michael Baquerizo

hi all - i took my VBC chainrings off my appaloosa and theyre going on to a
bob jackson audax frame that has a braze on for front derailleur, ie i need
to use a certain size ring to get my front derailleur to work. thinking
anyhting from 46-50 would be ideal for the big ring, and 36-38 or so for
the small ring? Mine is a 38 / 24

TLDR I'd like to trade my not really used so much (i dunno, 200 miles MAX?)
38/24 for a bigger set, 46-50/36-38, give or take.

not sure why i can't get the photo to work but shows some anodizing loss
but no change to shape, shark finning, etc.

[RBW] Re: Opinions sought - Platypus needs wheels

2023-12-13 Thread Josh C
Good for you, love it! Good advice from the lads above. I've got a set of
polished Quills and they are both durable and beautiful to look at.

Re: [RBW] Re: Clean, don't toss, your dull German mirror

2023-12-13 Thread Danny
Doh! Just noticed that yours is a slotted screw in the photo, which
reminded me that I swapped out the original screw on mine to one with a 3mm
socket head. I don't remember if I had to replace the nut at the same time,
so probably best to disregard my previous post and just bring the whole
thing to the hardware store.

Hi Roberta,

That screw should be an M4 x 0.7 mm pitch thread. I think ~16mm in length
should be adequate. Is the nut on the other side still in place?

[RBW] Re: Studs for Winter Riding?

2023-12-13 Thread Mackenzy Albright
John - Ive ridden extensively with both studs and regular tires through
severe Minnesota and Alberta winters. Back when winters had a fair amount
of temperature consistency I found fat MTB tires were excellent. I loved
when the cold weather hit -19*c and packed snow becomes hard and squeaky.
It's a joy to ride. Most trail riding was perfectly adequate if not
excellent.

With the winters these days heavy freeze thaw as well as increased cycling
traffic on winter trails I found things ice up much more often. I was also
commuting extensively and found the 45N kahvas to be excellent and worth
the money.

Now that I'm in Vancouver I don't bother with anything but fenders. If it's
slippery I take the bus!

2023-12-13 Thread John Dewey
Plus one on ACORN. On all JD bikes. And they get better with age…like we
all wish we did. Such a nice patina they produce and plenty of room for all
those sandwich breaks and one of the glass-bottle Coca Colas if you’re so
inclined. We can pass ‘em down through the generations.

This is somewhat surprising as it does not seem to align with Riv’s published size suggestions? [RBW] Re: Did anyone get one of the new Acorn Bags yesterday?

2023-12-13 Thread Jon Craig (Vendraen)
My wife and I each have a "Boxy Rando" bag from back in 2016, during the
time when they used snaps and didn't put their logo patch on the bags. We
love those bags, and it was time for me to get a bag for the back of my
bike, instead of using my Ortlieb panniers. So I waited for the Large
Saddlebag to become available and bought one. It arrives today! I'm
exited.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Susie L or XL Frame

2023-12-13 Thread Garth
I have a burnt orange Susie XL that's new in the box from the first
manufacturing batch that I'll consider selling. I'm not familiar with who
you are however as you have no posting history here and this is your only
posting. You can contact me offlist and I'd appreciate if you can provide
some kind of reference so I know you're genuinely interested in riding the
frame yourself. I'm certainly okay with speaking on the phone !
