Hey Eric, He wants a set badly. But he does not do the Google forums, so I offered to put it out there for him. I found a set NOS for $180 and used for $160, which I thought was an OK price, but not sure he took advantage. I hope you are well and getting some riding in. Re: [RBW] A Homer Hill build....
Sarah, I completely understand wanting your brake levers close at hand. But keep in mind, as another here has said, that this is one reason for a short (but tall) stem. I use this setup for my touring bike too (a Sam) because it allows a chance to “stretch out” like riding in the drops on drop bars. This is less useful if you are riding on a commute and making many stops, some unexpected and abrupt. For longer rides, I find I am “at home” in in my Lazy Boy” on the hoods. This position may not work for you if your body won’t allow it. You might be better served by Albatross bars. But keep in mind that you can angle those for a bit more “aero” position on faster group rides.Paul GermainMIDLOTHIAN, Va Sent from the all new AOL app for iOS On Thursday, November 30, 2023, 9:33 AM, Sarah Carlson wrote: Hey Paul!Thank you for sharing pictures of your set up, and an explanation of your gearing... Great suggestions! I'm going to have to test ride an Albastache bar somewhere, because your set up looks like a good possibility to be compatible for how I like to ride. The only thing is I know I like to have my break levers right under my hands and I tend to ride with my hands on the swept back part... so I'd need to see how it feels to keep my hands up front like that. Even my rides which are not in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains are rarely over 40 miles, but a good workout nonetheless.I find my Homer Hilsen is the perfect bike for this. With a near-minimum of bag capacity, I can carry a sandwich and even a lightweight jacket or vest, etc. Most every need for a day ride, which would include tools of course. Much of what I do on the Hilsen is unpaved and hilly. The 38mm tire capacity (with fenders) of my 2013 (?) frame handles dirt roads well, even on slippery downhills. The new Hilsens with longer chain stays may take wider tires yet, but I suspect there is a tipping point to tire width. If your group rides are entirely on pavement, 35-38mm tires should be the sweet spot for you and you won't need the excess rolling weight of wider.I use a Sam Hillborne for touring and the Hilsen is noticeably livelier, especially without the touring racks. Since I am not spending all day on the bike, I can get away with a lighter, more narrow saddle. (But we all know that is a very personal preference.) Re: [RBW] Re: FS - Acorn Large Front Trunk Bag
I just saw your quick response on PayPal, Matt. Thanks. Sorry for the delay today. I will see the package off tomorrow and alter you to the tracking number and expected delivery, which should be two days. This has been a good - and fun - bag since I purchased it. I hope you can get lots of use from it. If not satisfied, let me know. Re: [RBW] Hillborne / Hilsen: touring capable?
Bob, I have a Nitto Big Rack that Rivendell sells (sold?) on the rear. It came from a previous 2TT Hillborne I had and may have been purchased about 2011. The front is outfitted with a small front Nitto Mark's Rack, double-strutted, and a HAR (Hub Area Rack) from Rivendell. Everything lined up OK on my 55cm frame. The front Mark's rack and the HAR are all attached at the mid-fork hourglass braze on at the front of the fork. It took a M5x30mm stainless bolt to penetrate the hourglass brake on fully once I added a small washer. I don't know how these mid-fork fittings are moved around when the fame size changes, if they do. Here's an album of the bike with racks when I first purchased it (new) and built it up. If you are able to blow up the images it could help you. (At that time, I had single struts for the Mark's rack but later double-strutted it. https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/albums/72157656598945451/with/19527279914/ If you have any of the other Nitto small front racks with a fixed strut placement, I'm not sure what to tell you. The nice thing about the Marks rack is its versatility in terms of strut / struts adjustability. I think Jan Heine at Rene Herse is making a similar one now - at a higher price. It has an adjustable strut but does not use the diving board though. If you need additional images, I would do what I can. And thanks for the compliment on the bike. I'm very proud off it. Re: [RBW] Re: Bombadil on its Archetypal Route (loads of photos)
Very nice Jason! That model Rivendell is becoming the "classic". Fully lugged, details, "standard" chain stays, etc. To boot, it's bombproof and has room for wide tires. Of course, "classic" is a moving target. Expectations for a frame change over time and parts for older bikes get harder to obtain, pushing some older "classics" into the realm of "vintage". But unlike carbon, it takes decades for that transition. Jason, Sorry about your fender incident. As someone else said, those PDW Safety Tabs will help you regain your confidence. I've been using them for about 6 years. Though I haven't gotten a stick or rock caught while riding, I once dropped the front of the bike onto the rear of the front fender with the wheel removed while loading it into the van. The safety tab worked just as it should and I was able to pop it back into place, no harm done. Re: [RBW] Re: daily post ur riv
Wyatt, Rich & R Shannon, Just to add another wrinkle, here is how we three (traveling from Richmond, Va.) decided to handle the transport: We drove one vehicle with bike rack for the three bikes down to Nashville and spent the night in an inexpensive motel. We had purchased a $50 second-hand rack to fit the back of the hatchback on a rental van. (Most are about the same now, ours turned out to be a new Dodge. The rental places will usually give you a range of possible vehicles brands.) We chose a motel near the rental place in Nashville and had asked permission in advance to leave our vehicle there, which was acceptable. We loaded the van with our gear, installed the simple hatch rack and bikes and drove to Natchez. We had checked beforehand about having a drop-off location in Natchez and there was a small place, which suited us just fine. We gifted the $50 rack to a young mother working there who said she could use it for her kids, loaded the gear on the bikes and rode the few miles to the start of the Trace and began our ride in late afternoon. We camped at the first site available that night. After arriving back in Nashville, two of us stayed at the Loveless Motel restaurant after eating their great barbecue, while the designated driver called for an Uber to take him to pick up his vehicle. He drove back to us, we loaded the bikes and spent the night in a motel on the other side of Nashville. Drove back to Richmond the next day. While all that took some planning, it worked like a charm for us and was the main reason to ride from South-to-North. I hope this helps you plan your trip. It is something of a one-off for us, but I would not mind going back if we could plan it the other way around and perhaps make some more stops, perhaps at Vicksburg, etc. Paul -Original Message- From: Wyatt To: RBW Owners Bunch Sent: Sun, Dec 8, 2019 12:05 am Subject: Re: [RBW] Re: daily post ur riv Rich - I talked my girlfriend into dropping me off in Nashville (we got an AirBnB not far from the trace the night before I left). We met back up in Natchez where a few of our friends live. I did the ride in 5 days, which is about as many nights in a row that I want to camp these days. Plenty of good quiet places to hang a hammock, didn't seem to really matter if they were designated as "camp sites" or not. Would have been happy to add a night and break it up with a log cabin stay in French Camp, in retrospect. I realize that's not much of a tip in terms of accommodations, but it is a convenient arrangement if you can swing it... Paul - nice pics, looks like a fun crew. Jason, That's a wild rough-stuff setup on your Hilborne! As an owner of both a Hilborne and an older model Hilsen, both are wonderful bikes. You would not fit 48's on the latter, though. I use my Hillborne as a fendered tourer with 35 mm tires because of the (slightly) stiffer tubing. The Hilsen is used as a fendered mixed-terrain bike with 38 mm tires, but carry very little weight on it. It has a bit more lively feel than the Hilborne. Eric, do try it again. I think they are slowly getting those sections linked better. For instance, there is now a brand new beautiful trail - the Alum Creek Trail - through Columbus. (We were eventually forced up onto unfriendly roads by a flood that came through a couple days prior). Though the Kokosing Trail was our overall favorite, the Ohio & Erie Towpath Park between Cleveland and Peninsula is a gem. We wanted to rent a van for the return and the Cincinnati airport worked out best for that because of the location of the Cleveland airport - we actually left our vehicle (with permission) at a secure parking area at one of the Cuyahoga Nat'l Towpath Park and rode from there (just below Cleveland) to Cincinnati. There, we were able to hop on an express bus in downtown Cincy to the airport rental, which had a good selection of vans and was open longer hours and every day, just in case we arrived late. It worked out well. I don't know if there is an advantage to riding the other way - South to North - but have some friends who will be doing it that way in late July. They will not be camping, but motels, which is obviously more expensive. Also, they are taking 7 days, which would allow for more sightseeing. While primitive camping is available along the way, it's not particularly well marked and generally have no water or showers, etc. So, we planned one motel night for creature comforts and to wash clothes. Do lots of homework! While the trail & connector roads are generally marked, and the maps are a help, they come with many detours, changes and even one completely new trail through Columbus. I don't have a GPS, but Dan's work on that was essential to us not getting lost and doing some improvisation when we hit flooding from that big storm that hit WVa so hard. Thanks Doug. Yes, Squashapenny is at an old (pre-Civil War) RR stop and I'm sure that's where it got the name. (Guys our age certainly know about pennies on the tracks!) Re: [RBW] Re: Heat Gun to Attach Patches to Bags
You're welcome Philip. As I say, the trick is to be careful not to put too much glue on - just enough that it will not ooze out the edges of the patch when you press / burnish it down. It that happens, I think you can clean it up by gingerly scraping around the patch with a razor blade or the like and the excess should come off. Of course, you need to be quick enough that the glue does not get too hard before attaching it. A stich or two at the corners would add insurance if you have doubts. I stitched two and a half patches onto an old Carradice once, and it was a LOT of work. My last patch I put on a jacket by ironing on, and then putting 5 or 6 stitches around the perimeter. It's gone through the wash once with zero problem. I have a fresh green Carradice that needs some patches, and I'll use your hot glue gun trick. Philip www.biketinker.com On Monday, November 30, 2015 at 8:01:03 AM UTC-8, Bikie#4646 wrote: Meade, I usually like the peace of mind that stitching gives me and usually use a fairly heavy duty needle and thread and a pair of needle-nosed pliers to push it through the heavy material (carefully!). However, on the patch you recently sent with me, I chose a placement on my bag that had an inside tool pocket that precluded the use of needle and thread. After trying a hot iron without success, I heated the patch slightly, then used a hot glue gun on the backside. I was careful not to get too close to the edge (back of) the patch, but not so far that the edge would lift eventually. Then I burnished it while still hot. A small amount of glue creeped outside the patch's edge, but was very easy to scrape off once dry. An important tip would be to not overdo the amount of glue applied, while covering as much of the back of the patch as possible. Only time (and maybe temperature) will tell if this method works, but it lays flat now. If I could, I would put a small stitch into each corner for insurance. Paul Germain Midlothian, Va. Yep, just too large to take it to the next step - fatter (than 35mm) tires. No stand over room. I've recently that powder coat canti- Homer that I love for mixed surface riding here on the east coast: https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/17026382140/in/album-72157651662871709/ And, I sold my old 2010 double TT Hillborne in favor of a smaller single TT Black & Cream Hillborne (for touring): https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/19527279914/in/album-72157656598945451/ So, with 8 bikes, something had to go! (That, and I need two crowns on molars!) I've loved the Atlantis and would have moved it to "touring" mode if there were more stand over. All in all, I've have over 6,000 miles on it and selling for about what I paid in 2011. I hope I don't regret it! Should I? I hope not. The tubing seems a bit stiff, though I did not mind it. And, I really never cured the chainsuck problem entirely, probably due to the "80's-style" chain stays (not oval / not crimped). P. I recall your trip Tony! You've come a long way! (and many nice bikes) I wish I was technological enough to furnish you with files from the ride, but alas, I still use (and enjoy) paper maps. The state sells a compete set of county maps for $35, shipped! Where a ride may cross county lines, I make copies, cut & paste, re-copy and mark with a highlighter. Always some surprises, but many of those are happy ones! (Like these two old - ca. 1900 & 1912) one-lane, steel girder, wood-decked bridges on gravel road approaches in nearby Cumberland & Amelia Counties: https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/albums/72157645363078064 ) The paper maps do have a nice quality of seeing the "overall" route at once, picking alternate roads at will and spotting dirt / gravel roads. Of course, I know this is possible with a GPS, etc. and always enjoy having friends along that can help back me up with route-finding. Speaking of route-finding, have you heard of the Japanese cyclists' habit of "pass-hunting"? Cool. Also, unfortunately, Va. taxpayers refuse to fund more then 6 inches of shoulder on most roads. That's why I love these out-of-the-way country roads with little traffic. Usually, once I'm away from areas where the "packs" of cyclists create animosity with drivers, it can be nice. But, I do get a case of envy when I'm in So. MD or around Frederick and find good shoulder on most backroads. Let me know if you're down this way sometime - or if you'd like recommendations on more trails. There's a new one southwest of Petersburg, Va., the Tobacco Heritage Rail Trail, that was funded with Tobacco Settlement money and has a nice look to the infrastructure: http://tobaccoheritagetrail.org I could be within striking distance for you. Re: [RBW] Re: mid-Virginia overnighter
Your son would enjoy it Ryan! The bridge is spectacular of course, but is only a 7-mile round trip from Farmville. The rest of the 31-mile trail is only moderately interesting, since it does not follow a river like most rail trails do. But, being new to that kind of thing, he won't care. The trail surface is excellent and I prefer it to asphalt. However, there's not a lot of tree cover like the C, etc., so fall temps would be easier for him. Not much water providing on the outer limits, so stay hydrated. They need to extend it both ways a few miles to take it right into Pamplin (western end) and Burkeville (eastern end) and hopefully that will happen someday. Other attractions nearby are Appomattox Court House and Sailor's Creek Battlefield Park near Rice, Va., if he's into Civil War history. Send a picture when you get the Sam built! P. Re: [RBW] FS - 56cm Sam Hillborne frameset
Hey Richard, I went to the newer 55cm. While the 56cm's TT was a bit long, I used it 4 years without much of a problem. But, the new additional fork eyelets, a few cosmetic changes and the black cream color pushed me over the edge. The change from double TT to single was a risk, since I did not want shimmy or handling problems with 4 panniers in the mountains. But, loading the bike and taking it on a couple local day rides makes me think the stability I got with the first Sam was more the 36-hole rims that original came with the bike. I moved most of the componets to the new bike. Sizing a Sam is always tricky, so I relied on Riv's advice before making the purchase. Of course, your choice of tire width can make a huge difference in standover, too. My PBH is 863 and I run 38mm Vittoria Hyper Randonneuers on this bike. The one cm difference is noticeable, but not great. I did hate to give up the cantilever brakes, though, so spent the money to get Paul Racers for the new Sam. They work well. [RBW] Bike and Hatchet First Aid
Tony, While I usually carry minor patch-up stuff on short rides and a full kit for touring, the one thing that always goes with me is a small packet of baby wipes to which I add an ounce or so of witch hazel. This can work to clean road rash (the most likely need, frankly) or other minor wounds. In a pinch, it can even replace TP in case of an urgent need with no port john around. The witch hazel is easier on the skin than alcohol, IMHO, though either will do. Paul Germain Tony DeFilippo vpi...@gmail.com: Oct 18 07:52AM -0700 Since early August I've had or have been close to others with some bad luck on the bike and using a hatchet... I've been over the handlebars twice and then this weekend a good friend put one of my axes (fiskars x15) into his knee while splitting wood. All's well in each case thank goodness though two out of the incidents involved the emergency room and the Axe wound required an ambulance. Prevention of these incidents is definitely worth discussion and I've given each allot of thought in that regards but the recent issue with the Axe really has me thinking hard about my first aid kit for the woods and while on the bike... We were lucky to have several level headed people (couple of eagle scouts!) And the materials to improvise a tourniquet and compression bandage. So as I've been pouring over trauma kits for my truck and campsite I also started thinking that as a nearly every day commuter I should have some kit with me on the bike just as I have repair tools for the bike. The things I'm thinking of so far include; -wound cleaner, alcohol wipes? -antibiotic ointment -sterile gauze bandages (typical road rash size) -conforming wrap or athletic wrap or medical tape -triangle bandage -small assortment of band aids -rubber gloves Would the following be overkill; -CAT style tourniquet -quick clot sponge or bandage -'Israeli' style compression bandage -trauma shears The scenario for this kit is urban commuting with professional emergency responce time of 10 min or less, cell service at all times and the level of training I have is relatively basic. (Scout and basic military level). Oh and it needs to fit in either a large saddle wedge, frame bag or other such unobtrusive, stays on bike type location. What, if anything, do you guys include in your on bike kit? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] On-bike tools: what is your choice or favorite?
Joan, I've become a fan of the Crank Bros. Multi-tool with flask: http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/product_details.php?id=14674category=214 Particularly nice not to have to carry a separate chain breaker. Paul Germain Midlothian, Va. Joan Oppel oppel...@verizon.net Apr 28 08:28PM -0500 I'm in the market for a new multi-tool for on-bike repairs and adjustments. I don't think I need all of the 26 or 27 items I currently carry. The ones I've used most have been the allen wrenches in various sizes up to 8, the chain tool, the 10mm box wrench (I think 10, it's whatever size adjusts the nuts on fenders), and very occasionally the flat screwdriver. The chain tool is a definite keeper, I've used it a number of times to help friends (and once for myself). I thought there was a discussion a few months ago about on-bike tools, but a search of the archives didn't turn up anything. Thanks! Joan PS -I also carry a couple of zip ties, duct tape wrapped around a piece of cardboard (has seen various uses including to keep bandages on), couple of cut-up segments of old tires and plastic tire levers/patch kit/tube. On a tour, a few other bits and pieces in case of missing bolts, broken chain. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
