Re: [RBW] Re: Lugged Roadini and Charlie H Gallup

2024-05-05 Thread Paul M
I purchased a Sergio green Roadini from the last run of framesets. The tig
welding on this frame had some very poor welding beads. Definitely not what
I would expect on a $1300 frame. Maybe it was just this frame, but I feel
that it certainly could have been on the other Roadini's. That could
explain the move to a lugged Roadini frame. I sold it and bought a mustard
Homer (lugged :).

Re: [RBW] Rivendell Roadbike Curious

2024-04-25 Thread Paul G
One thing, I think, that separates Riv road bikes from other brands is the
maintaining of good fit AND handling geometry at the smaller frame sizes
this thread is dealing with. The 700c wheel size has to be dealt with
because they physically "get in the way" of good geometry more as the
frames become smaller (because the wheels stay the same size).

Regarding the Roadeo specifically, this frame was designed with club
riding, and even tight peloton riding, in mind so the maneuverability is
the quickest of all the Riv road bikes. Moreover, sizes smaller than 59cm
get thinner, superlight tubing (down to 4mm bellies) in the main triangle.
This is assuming the current models still adhere to the original design. So
it's lighter and perhaps more lively than the equivalent Roadini. Finally,
it has more of the look of a classic road bike with its nearly level top
tube.

So the Roadeo becomes more unique from the other models in the smaller
sizes.

I've been riding a Roadeo for 10 years now and love it.

I guess that depends on what you mean by "taller" and what you mean by "usual".
I have six vintage level top tube road bikes in my stable, and I would not
consider the Univega "taller" than the other five.  I'm a Stack and Reach guy,
and in order to get the Stack and Reach I want/need on a vintage road frame
with a level top tube, I'm looking at a solid "Large" frame size.  Even though
I'm 5'10".  Back in my teens and twenties I fit these bikes more like racing
bikes and I would have been in the "Medium" range.  I also have two
contemporary level-top-tube bikes and those have a similar silhouette to the
vintage machines.  Those 8 bikes have a "fist of seatpost" as is typical.
My modern sloping top tube bikes have a similar Stack and Reach but have a more
modern compact look.  Those range from slightly sloping bikes like a
Roadeo/Legolas/Quickbeam/Romulus to more sloping approaches.  All my bikes in
my stable fit me fine.  :)

[RBW] Re: WTB: Bosco and JJJ Bars

2024-03-26 Thread Paul Donald
I have a set of the VO Granola Bars and a set of the chromo Bosco's at 52
width. Both in silver.

Was thinking about keeping the Bosco's for a Riv that I'm in glacial-paced
negotiations about but i think I might prefer something with a lot less
rise. Message me if you'd like and we can talk price.

I'm in LA so that might make shipping a little affordable.

[RBW] FS: Waterford Built Atlantis (58cm) Frameset & Various Parts

2024-03-14 Thread Erik from Saint Paul
Had this frame listed last summer, buyer backed out due to unforeseen life
expenses, so I packed it away. It's now back up for sale just in time for
anyone with a tax refund burning a hole in their pocket to build up their
dream bike.

Rivendell Atlantis built by Waterford in 2018.
Size: 58cm
Color: British racing green
Headset: Chris King (included)
Seatpost: Kalloy Uno - 26.8mm (included)
Wheel size: 700c - 135mm rear spacing
Frame is in really good shape overall, but there are a few cosmetic
blemishes like minor scratches, some paint peeling around fender and rack
bosses, and a slight paint bulge where the front derailleur was mounted. No
dents, rust or any structural issues. Brake cable hangers are pictured, but
not included.

$1,600 for local sale (Minneapolis/St Paul).
Willing to ship via Bikeflights for an additional cost to buyer.

I also have a wheelset I can include in the sale for an extra $100.
Velocity Dyad rims laced to Shimano LX hubs with Surly Knard tires. (Not
looking to sell/ship unless it's with the frame).

Other parts for sale:
* Nitto Technomic stem (26.0mm clamp, 120mm long): $20
* Velo Orange 46/30 crankset (170mm): $100
* Tektro Oryx cantilever brakes: $20
Shipping costs are additional and determined on your location.

Re: [RBW] Revisiting the Nitto 52f Basket Rack

2024-03-10 Thread Paul Donald
I use a steerstopper on my Soma Saga that's fitted with a Crust Clydesdale
fork. That fork can be loaded up quite heavily, which is what I do with the
giant basket I have on it. Even with the frame up on a double leg stand the
fork will still swing if the ground is not level. So I lock the steerer
with the steerstop which makes loading and unloading much nicer. It has a 1
1/8th steerer admittedly, but they do have shims for quill stems. And
whatever you do, don't forget to unhitch the lock before riding off. I've
done this twice, and learnt my lesson.

[RBW] Re: Going really large on Clems

2024-03-10 Thread Paul Donald
I wish I could test ride some of these bikes! I am certainly taken by the
aesthetics of the larger Clems, but my eyes may not be sensible guides for
actual ride fit. Graham and fiddleharpa (sorry, I can only see your email
handle here), your pbh's are greater than mine, which is at 85.5, and I set
my saddle at 74.5mm for 175 cranks. Would you tell me what height your
saddles are set at, including crank length? Talk me into taking up Justins
offer of a deal. Or I'll go back to staring at the two size 60 Rosco Bubbe
Paltypus's I see out there...

[RBW] Re: Has anyone else tried the new Riv seat?

2024-03-02 Thread Paul Donald
I sold all but one of my Brooks and Selle Anatomica's (I have a B67 if
anyone's looking) and have replaced them all with Ergon SF and one
Rivendell Clem saddle. I always wear regular clothes when riding and the
Ergon SF is less uncomfortable than all the leather saddles were for me.
The Riv is wide on the nose but so far is slightly more comfortable than
the Ergon. I commute about 18-20 mile round trip most days in a fairly
upright riding position.

Re: [RBW] Going really large on Clems

2024-03-02 Thread Paul Donald
I really appreciate all these great opinions. I *could* ride a 64 judging by
what I’ve read here, but perhaps it is more prudent to seek out a 59. Of course
now I have to pay very close attention to the posts about Clem vs Platypus. My
inclination is toward the extreme, and the Clem fulfills that with wheelbase
etc. The Platypus is relatively sensible in comparison. But this is about
bicycles, and bicycles are “inherently” sensible so, surely, anything goes
right?

[RBW] Going really large on Clems

2024-02-24 Thread Paul Donald
Hi, I'm new here, all my Rivendell ownership is currently confined to their
components all over my Riv-esque bikes, Soma Saga, New Albion Privateer,
Schwinn High Sierra (that one is destined to be replaced with a proper Riv)
Omnium Cargo. It would be nice to have the main course and not just be
fiddling with the condiments.

I've been reading what folks have written about Riv sizing, both here and
on Rivs website, and was particularly interested in Grant's experiment with
a 64 Clem for his 85mm PBH. I have a PBH of 85.5 so in theory I could do
similar. Oddly, according to their spec sheets, a 64 has 1mm less reach
than a 59.

Anyone cheerfully riding against the grain size-wise?

[RBW] FS: Nitto Deluxe/Tallux 120mm & Ritchey/Nitto 100mm stems

2024-01-24 Thread Paul M
The Nitto Tallux stem came off an early model Clem L that had seen very
little use. I sold the frameset but kept the components. 120mm reach with a
-17 degree drop but levels out once mounted. 225mm quill. 25.4 handlebar
clamp. Excellent clean condition with some very faint marks from
installation. $55 shipped

The Ritchey Force stem is made by Nitto from the early 90's. 100mm reach
with zero rise but will give ~6 degree rise once mounted. 26.0 handlebar
clamp. Excellent condition. $60 shipped.

More pictures if interested, just reach out off this site. Thanks, Paul

I wouldn't be surprised if RBW dropped the Homer Hilsen from their line-up

since it looks to have longish chainstays and uses the same caliper brakes
as the Homer. Different frame design but similar "country bike" vibes.

Re: [RBW] A Homer Hill build....

2023-11-30 Thread 'Paul Germain' via RBW Owners Bunch
Sarah, I completely understand wanting your brake levers close at hand. But
keep in mind, as another here has said, that this is one reason for a short
(but tall) stem. I use this setup for my touring bike too (a Sam) because it
allows a chance to “stretch out” like riding in the drops on drop bars. This is
less useful if you are riding on a commute and making many stops, some
unexpected and abrupt. For longer rides, I find I am “at home”  in in my Lazy
Boy” on the hoods. This position may not work for you if your body won’t allow
it. You might be better served by Albatross bars. But keep in mind that you can
angle those for a bit more “aero” position on faster group rides.Paul

Hey Paul!Thank you for sharing pictures of your set up, and an explanation of
your gearing... I like what you have going here, my teen would say, "It's a

how I ride. 36 seems like a sweet spot to ride in, while also having a 24 for
hills, and a 46 which gives options when I am coming down hills because I just
feel ungrounded when I'm totally spinning down hills. Great suggestions!

I'm going to have to test ride an Albastache bar somewhere, because your set up
looks like a good possibility to be compatible for how I like to ride. The only
thing is I know I like to have my break levers right under my hands and I tend
to ride with my hands on the swept back part... so I'd need to see how it feels
to keep my hands up front like that. Luckily learning what we like tends to
involve riding and be fun so I'm up for it!

Sarah, I would like to ditto the other recommendations for triple chainrings

My Mustache bars with a slight tilt downward offers the best of both worlds for
me. It fits between my drop bar bike and the more upright Albatross bar on my
single speed daily ride.I'm at a point in life where I have no riding partners
who don't think the way I do about group riding. (Which might be a new goal for
you, too?) I would call it "spirited" but not competitive. We all have
different pain thresholds and capabilities but everyone would think it improper
to leave the others in the dust. Often the ride includes a bagged lunch midway.
Even my rides which are not in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains are
rarely over 40 miles, but a good workout nonetheless.I find my Homer Hilsen is
the perfect bike for this. With a near-minimum of bag capacity, I can carry a
sandwich and even a lightweight jacket or vest, etc. Most every need for a day
ride, which would include tools of course. Much of what I do on the Hilsen is
unpaved and hilly. The 38mm tire capacity (with fenders) of my 2013 (?) frame
handles dirt roads well, even on slippery downhills. The new Hilsens with
longer chain stays may take wider tires yet, but I suspect there is a tipping
point to tire width. If your group rides are entirely on pavement, 35-38mm
tires should be the sweet spot for you and you won't need the excess rolling
weight of wider.I use a Sam Hillborne for touring and the Hilsen is noticeably
livelier, especially without the touring racks. Since I am not spending all day
on the bike, I can get away with a lighter, more narrow saddle. (But we all
know that is a very personal preference.)  My Hilsen set up this way for me is
a confidence-builder and my favorite bike for adventure rides with
others.https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/52784257986/in/album-72177720307152181/

Re: [RBW] Babies on bikes

2023-09-02 Thread Paul Richardson
I had a very positive experience with the Thule Yepp Mini front-mounted
seat for ~9 months to nearly two-years-old. It pairs well with sweptback
bars like Choco and Albatross, though I also used it with Wavie bars. We
definitely started before age one, no problem. I ride big bikes, so
there's plenty of space, but my wife also rides with it on her Choco'd 51cm
Homer Hilsen and does just fine. I've probably got a picture somewhere...

I had a very negative experience with the Hamax Caress (rear mounted) and
do not recommend it.

With older kids, I think the Burley trailer is a great option. I don't
feel like it changes the ride feel *too* dramatically, and it's pretty
simple to move from bike to bike (if there's more than one in your
stable). I wrecked once; the trailer flipped on its side, but my daughter
was completely fine and just wanted to keep going.

I did find that both of my kids were super overstimulated by their first
couple of rides on the Thule and starting with short, slow circles around
the neighborhood was right for their temperaments.

Biking with kids is the best. Start 'em young.

[RBW] Re: Have you tried MKS Seahorse pedals

2023-08-12 Thread Paul Richardson
Thanks for all the feedback.

I'm not 100% sold on the huge pedal thing that seems to be quite prevalent,
and the Seahorse seemed like a nice way to split the difference. But
Brendan your negative experience is especially helpful. Slippy is no
bueno, no no no.

I've seen the Tacos, and had the pleasure of playing with a pair of
Bubblys, which seem to spin simply by being looked at...man what did they
grease those bearings with, wowee zowee. The pricepoint ($100 Bubblys vs.
$32 Seahorse, at bluelug) is also a consideration.

Still deciding if I'll toss a pair in the cart, but I'll offer my firsthand
experience if I do.

thanks

[RBW] Have you tried MKS Seahorse pedals

2023-08-02 Thread Paul Richardson
Hi

If anyone has ridden the MKS Seahorse
<https://www.mkspedal.com/?q=en/product/node/436> pedals and has strong
opinions about them, I'd love to hear--especially if you hated them, for
some reason. Sylvan Touring is my favorite pedal I've yet tried, but I've
also been very happy with Allways and Gammas.

thanks for any feedback

Re: [RBW] July 21 CyclingSavvy course

2023-07-19 Thread Paul Lamontagne
I’m basically a lurker on this group having joined a few months ago. I own
a couple of Rivendell bicycles and enjoy some of the discussions in the
group. I say a lurker in that my bikes have mostly been built by Rivendell
and I’m not particularly interested in changing things much, as many of you
seem to do.

I want to add to Pam’s post about CyclingSavvy and how great a resource it
is for me.

I just completed the CyclingSavvy 3-Part Workshop in Milford, OH last
weekend, the first part being the class that Pam is teaching. The
information provided and techniques taught are going to make me a safer and
better cyclist (and driver) as I put into practice the techniques they
teach. I consider myself lucky to have stumbled upon their website a few
months ago. They have provided me information and techniques that years of
riding, including bike club membership, has not provided.

You can start with the free Essentials course if you can’t attend Pam’s
virtual class. For slightly more than the price of a new Brooks B17 saddle,
you can attend a 3-Part Workshop AND sign up for their Ride Awesome
Membership which gives you LIFETIME access to 3 premium courses. Plus Ride
Awesome Members can attend occasional virtual talks on various cycling
topics. I’m finding that lifetime course access is an important way for me
to review safe practices and keep that information fresh as I ride.

I’m really enthused by the CyclingSavvy program. I hope my enthusiasm helps
someone start/continue their bicycle safety training in whatever form works
for them.

there are a few cosmetic issues like minor scratches, some paint peeling

[RBW] WTB: Child Stoker Kit for HubbuhHubbuh

2023-06-08 Thread Paul Clifton
I'd like to buy a used child stoker kit that fits the 1 1/4" seat tube of
the HubbuhHubbuh.

This Burley version looks like it would work, but I'd rather not pay 300
bucks, and if anyone's kids have outgrown theirs, I'd love to give it a new
home.
https://budgetbicyclectr.com/burley-tandem-child-stoker-conversion-kit-5368.html

Please reply off list if you have one, and feel free to reply on list if
you have tips and tricks for using these things.

All the best,
Paul in AR

[RBW] Re: boscomoose - pictures, experiences, comparisons?

2023-05-21 Thread Paul Richardson
thanks to all for taking the time to respond.

keith--tosco certainly looks nice but i'm really looking for
moosebars--maybe choco, but probably bosco. i'm surprised to see yours
sloping down as much as they do. the angle looks like the cheviot picture
on the riv site, and (to my eye) a lot steeper downward than the photos on
bluelug. but gee gah maybe it's all an optical illusion, or a result of
headtube angle?!

jay--sitting "more upright than i wanted" is...exactly what i want!

eric--bluelug
<https://bluelug.com/bike-catalog/?post_type=post=nitto-rivendell-bosco-bullmoose-bar-thread>

is a treasure trove of photos--totally forgot to look there first.

time to start saving my allowance!

[RBW] boscomoose - pictures, experiences, comparisons?

2023-05-20 Thread Paul Richardson
howdy folks

i've been doing the best digging i can and cannot seem to wrangle very many
pictures of rivs with boscomoose bars. have you tried them? did you like
them? i ride big bikes, so i'm not too concerned about knee strike on the
bar-ends, which i gather can be a drawback for some. their fixedness
obviously makes for a riskier purchase than separate stem+bars, so i'd love
to hear your experience before i take the plunge!

thanks in advance

Re: [RBW] Re: Widest fenders that easily fit a Joe Appa?

2023-03-22 Thread Paul Yokanovich
That's an idea Doug, however by reshaping the 63mm 700c fender to fit the
smaller diameter 650b you would be widening the fender. You would probably
want to start with a fender that's more narrower.

2023-03-09 Thread Paul (GlennsBikeGarage)
Doug,

I'm currently installing the Honjo H80 62mm smooth fenders on my daughter's
51cm Joe Appaloosa (650b) with 42mm Grand Bois tires. These fenders fit

Re: [RBW] Rivendell Legos!

2023-03-07 Thread Paul Clifton
Patrick,
They still offer plenty of options for buckets of misc bricks:
https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/lego-medium-creative-brick-box-10696

I think it's a good balance. The theme sets are great for learning to
follow instructions and developing different spatial thinking skills, and
def get kids excited to build something from their favorite show or movie.
The freestyle sets are great for creativity and exploration.

But yeah, millennials really go hard on nostalgia and will spend big bucks
on kits that combine their favorite childhood pastime with their favorite
childhood media.

I just saw your quick response on PayPal, Matt. Thanks. Sorry for the delay
today. I will see the package off tomorrow and alter you to the tracking number
and expected delivery, which should be two days.
This has been a good - and fun - bag since I purchased it. I hope you can get
lots of use from it. If not satisfied, let me know.

Re: [RBW] Things I Feel Guilty About: Bike Life

2023-03-04 Thread Paul Clifton
Fantastic post, Leah. Learning to empathize with tiny humans has been one
of the most eye opening parts of parenthood for me.

In the Google Groups editor, the little square icon with the "mountains" is
how you add an inline image. The photo has to be small enough (in
megabytes, not pixels) for Google Groups to accept it. Otherwise, nothing
will happen and it won't tell you what's wrong. Here's an inline image with
a red circle around the icon:
Paul in AR

P.S. It's worth making sure the photo isn't real big in terms of pixels
also, otherwise it'll bleed off the screen. And Google Groups will not let
you copy/paste images into the text. You have to select the image file or
drag and drop it into the screen that opens when you click the button.
Either way, your method seems to work just fine, so it's all good.

Page 4 of the PDF instructions show the preferred arm location. It's like
basically as long as you can get it up to about 7 o'clock, you should be
good:

I didn't see any reviews or video instructions. must be niche product :)

I may spring for one of these next time I need another rack, which may be
never, but it'd really encourage me to put fenders back on some of my bikes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Gus and Susie ride off into the sunset

2023-01-31 Thread Paul M
I was hoping for a large when they went on sale last year and they
certainly sold out fast. The XL is fine in the height but it's 68.5cm
effective top tube is so long. The 56cm has a 66cm top tube length. They
used a 31.8mm diameter top tube on the XL (like the Gus) and a 28.6mm top
tube on the 56cm and smaller frames.

Re: [RBW] Seat Post Slippage

My recent Susie calls for a 26.8 seatpost but with the stock Kalloy
seatpost there is a fair amount of play. I had a 27.0 Kalloy seatpost that
fit snug and solved the problem. I'm not sure a Nitto 26.8 seatpost would
have solved the problem for this frame.

If you read the current Rivendell Blahg (Grants blog) he mentions that the
last fillet brazed Hillibikes, the Gus & Susie shipment that just arrived,
will be it for that those models being made. So last chance at owning a
beautiful ATB frameset.

Re: [RBW] Rosco Mtn Mixte?

Brian, FWIW (not much, especially since this thread is about the Massive
Mountain Mixte) - but I think there were teens of the mediums made. They
ended up doing two runs of them, and one of them was at least 10 bikes. So
they're less scarce, but only slightly. The mediums used Appaloosa forks.

I'm really only familiar with the panhandle, and have been lucky to spend

worth a visit. I don't know about the camping situation there, and riding
there wouldn't be a joy, unless there's a back way I don't know about. But
a couple hours of hiking around and seeing the strange sink holes is a very
cool.

Awesome setup and perfect kit, Brian. Thanks for sharing. Where are you
planning to camp in Florida? I'm always interested in spots to check out
down there.

I'm really eager to get my Gus out on an overnight sometime soon, and
there's a chance I'll make it to the state park on Saint Joe Penninsula
<https://goo.gl/maps/SDUUSAHYtLTc1p7r9> in early January, but I've barely
had a chance to figure out how I'd carry my gear, and I'd have to get it
all sorted by this Saturday. I had a full frame bag on my Jones, and I pack
a little heavier than you, so I expect panniers might be in order, so maybe
just a nice coffee outside outing around there somewhere will scratch the
itch until it warms up here in the Ozarks.

This just reminded me ... I scored some 27.5x2.8" WTB Rangers the other

2022-12-13 Thread Paul Clifton
Thanks for the chart Laing!

Deore's and many others clear 2.8" G Ones on a 650b Cliffhanger on the Gus
just fine. I guess I get some leaves in between the tire and the cable
sometimes, but that happens with all rim brakes IME.

The Motolites technically cleared, if I set them up very close to the rim
so that the arms were as vertical as possible. But it was too close for
comfort, and I did hear some rubbing occasionally, but not sure what was
deforming to cause it ...

Re: [RBW] Cliffhanger alternatives?

2022-12-13 Thread Paul Clifton
Richard,
I run 2.8" G-ones on Cliffhangers on my Gus without any problems. I don't
think the frame would take a bigger tire, and v-brakes almost certainly
won't. I already had to Swap the Paul Motolites for Deores to clear the
2.8" G-ones.

So if you want Cliffhangers on your Susie, no need to worry about the rim
width being a limiting factor.

[RBW] Re: Saddle height and BPH

2022-12-12 Thread Paul Clifton
Laing, I've puzzled about how to take crank length into account and this
seems like a great idea. I'll give it a try. But at the end of the day,
anything that is a fairly reproducible number for an individual gets the
job done. I have a seamstress tape with a little rivet on the end that
grabs the top of the hole where the crank bolt goes and it gets the zero
point of the tape close enough to the center of the crank that it's never
been a problem, or at least it keeps my measurements fairly consistent.

[RBW] Re: Saddle height and BPH

2022-12-12 Thread Paul Clifton
IME, there's no objective way to get the "right" saddle height, but the Riv
method gets me in the ballpark. I do change my saddle height +/- a cm or
so, even on the same bike, depending on the kind of riding I'm doing
(single track vs path/road/gravel) and how flexible I'm feeling at any
given time. I'm not searching for the most efficient position in terms of
power transfer, but the most comfortable in terms of my muscles, joints,
and movements on the bike.

What the others have said (heel on pedal to almost lock out, and adjusting
the fore/aft/tilt) is good advice, but how straight to get your knee at the
bottom of the pedal stroke is subjective in my opinion. I'd say jack the
seat up another 4cm and see how it feels, but don't be shy about lowering
it back down either. I think some of the individual differences have to do
with femur-to-fibula ratios, hip flexibility, quad-to-calf strength ratios,
and butt size, not to mention upright vs leaned forward riding position.

Another Riv method that I like is
1. Move the seat way up. Get it high enough that when you ride, you notice
your hips moving from side to side, like you're trying to get a little more
extension to reach the bottom of the pedal stroke.
2. Move the saddle down 1/2 to 1 cm at a time until you feel that hip
rocking stop.

That's gonna get you your maximum acceptable saddle height, which I would
consider "leaned-forward, go fast, roadie saddle height". Go down from
there based on what feels comfortable to your knees and hips on the type of
riding you're doing.

These are just my thoughts as I've searched for saddle height nirvana and
found that it only really exists in the moment.

It will probably go to a new home. Various permutations of various stables

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillbornes

2022-12-05 Thread Paul Clifton
I'm not looking to buy a Sam, but I just glanced at the size chart on
Instagram, and, wow, the sizing has changed dramatically over the years. My
PBH is 82cm. That puts me on a 51cm Sam for this current batch. When I test
rode one of the originals with caliper brakes, it was a 56cm I believe, and
it fit perfectly. I haven't kept up with the geometry changes, but I'd
really like to see what it's like to ride a 51cm frame and be at the top
end of a size range for once. I bet the reach would be sublime.

[RBW] Re: Stem Length and Handlebar Width

2022-12-05 Thread Paul Clifton
Personally, yes, I would expect to want a shorter stem with wider bars. I
would probably try it with the existing stem, but I'd anticipate going
shorter.

Which also makes me realize that, since I'm pretty sensitive to the impact
of stem length on handling, there's probably some setups where my optimum
bar width, doesn't work with my optimum stem length.

[RBW] WTB - Maybe ... - Clem L - Medium

2022-12-03 Thread Paul Clifton
I'm curious if anyone has a medium Clem L they'd like to sell. I'd prefer
frame/fork, but I'd consider a complete or partial build.

If you have one, please send me a PM with details and your price.

I'm contemplating passing my Rosco Bebe on to another family, but need a
replacement before I do. But hey, my daughter might be pedaling her own
bike in the next couple weeks, so I may not even need a townie for much
longer, so who knows how this'll all shake out.

Thanks,
Paul in AR

Hey Joe, I got it and will follow up off list. Hate to say it, but I'm also
not surprised: you're not the only one waiting on a reply :)

I think Riv should do another round of these :) I wonder if lead times and
factory capacity are back to where they can do a special order if 10 or 20
people commit to buy them.

[RBW] Re: Clem L vs Rosco Bebe

2022-12-02 Thread Paul Clifton
I'm with you on that Hoch. I'm the third owner of a semi-custom Boulder All
Road 650b. Aside from being a particularly special bike, it happens to fit
like no other bike I've ever ridden. I've considered selling it several
times, because I don't ride it much, and I've basically stopped riding drop
bars anyway, but I know that if I'm going to own a drop bar road bike, it's
the only one that will ever do, so it's staying, and I get it out 6 or 10
times a year for a 30 mile gravel ride and remember why I have it and how
much fun a sporty bike that really fits is.

It's actually a really similar situation to the Bebe bike. It's a really
specialized bike for a specific purpose that I don't actually take part in
(Brevets or Babies). So I'm not in a rush to replace it. Ideally I could
send it out on loan locally to parents I know, but I don't have that kind
of network these days.

2022-12-02 Thread Paul Clifton
Hey Hoch,
The fork is a Clem fork but I'm pretty sure the head tube angle is
different, part of the way they made the effective top tube so long and
gave it such good balance with a 30 lb load behind the handle bars.

I don't really want to get rid of it or get a new bike, but I do want
another parent and kid to have the wonderful experience my daughter and I
had for the couple years she fit the Yepp seat, so if there's a
more-or-less drop-in replacement out there, I want to know about it.

[RBW] Re: Cockpit Quandaries - Friction bar ends for a new rider

2022-11-30 Thread Paul Clifton
Thanks Pam. I also think friction bar end shifters on Albatross bars is the
most pleasurable way to shift. It just feels right to me. I'll take them
with me and let her check them out.

If this bike works out, I'd love to send her up to Charlotte for one of
your classes. She's in Atlanta, so not as close to Charlotte as Augusta,
but it's still an easy drive. There are a few organizations that do similar
classes in Atlanta, but I'd have to look them up again, and they don't
happen very regularly. But she is in a good spot to bike commute a couple
days a week, when the weather is nice and her butt gets used to a saddle.
It would probably be 15 miles round trip, but 13 of that would be
completely separated rail trail (the Beltline (if you've heard of it) - and
not the busy part, but the pretty and still undeveloped part). I'd be
pretty envious of anyone taking that cruise every day. She's said she'd
like to do it, and I'll do what I can to facilitate.

[RBW] Clem L vs Rosco Bebe

2022-11-30 Thread Paul Clifton
Has anyone ridden both a Clem L and a Rosco Bebe enough to comment on the
differences?

My bebe has long since outgrown the Yepp Mini front seat, and I'm now using
the Bebe to drag a copilot.

Part of me feels like I should pass the Bebe on to a new parent, but
another part of me wants to just keep it. The ride is phenomenal, and
really unlike anything else I've ever ridden and I doubt I'd ever get it
back if I let it go.

The 68 degree seat tube angle is really comfortable, and the really long
effective top tube puts so much bike out in front of the rider that it
feels like it really takes the lead. It's absurdly stable on fast descents
and carves corners without any skittishness.

If I was going to sell it, I'd probably replace it with a Clem as my kid
hauling townie, since I'd like to keep my Gus set up for rowdy single track
fun.

So I'm curious if anyone can actually compare the two.

[RBW] Re: Your Favorite V-Brake Pads?!

2022-11-29 Thread Paul Clifton
I like to dual compound pads from Kool Stop. The salmon pads squeal too
much. The dual compound stop fantastically and set up easily and I like
having the pads that slide into the holder.

I've tried a couple types of Jagwire and a couple types of Shimano and the
plain Salmon kool stops and the dual compound v type 2 are leaps and bounds
better than any other ones.

[RBW] Re: Book recommendations for learning how to build up a bike

2022-11-29 Thread Paul Clifton
My experience with bike mechanic books is that they all say the same stuff,
but in different ways, with different styles of illustrations or
photographs, and in varying degrees of detail. It might be worth a trip to
the library to flip through a few of them and see what jives with your
experience and preferences.

The one I used as a kid was called something like "How to fix your bicycle"
and it just confused me (and my dad who is a competent mechanic). So
definitely skim anything you can before you buy it.

The content I would really want in a book is tips and tricks, like how to
hold everything just right to get the cable tension for my brakes perfect
and what parts are compatible with other parts (like using a 9 speed chain
on 8 speed cassettes, or using Shimano road shifters with mountain
derailers). I don't know of a book that has that stuff, but I bet there is
one out there that does.

[RBW] Re: Cockpit Quandaries - Friction bar ends for a new rider

2022-11-29 Thread Paul Clifton
hankfully the fork is fine.

My friend wants a bike! She's talks about it frequently. But finding a bike
for her has been a years long process for lots of reasons. She's bought new
bikes from shops. The shop guy told her it fit, but the seat was too high,
and the reach was too long. It had 700c wheels, and the handling was
twitchy, and she wasn't comfortable or confident. So to me, it's clear it
didn't fit and was poorly designed in general. She's ridden a bunch of
hand-me-down bikes from "small" people. For the most part she can barely
get the seat low enough to reach the pedals. They have all had 700c
wheels, and on small frames, that makes the handling really twitchy, which
isn't good, especially for an inexperienced and timid rider. Everyone on
this list probably knows that already: to paraphrase Grant - big wheels +
small frames = bad combo.

I've only ever met one other adult as small as her. That person just rode a
BMX bike. This is the smallest bike I've seen with 26" wheels. I know the
saddle height will work, and the handling should be much better than
everything else she's ridden, except for my wife's Clem, which costs 4x as
much and wouldn't fit. If the handling is still bad, she'll have to find a
24" wheel bike. Since I think it will fit, I'm doing everything else I can
to improve the riding experience so that she doesn't think, "Well, I have a
bike that fits, but it isn't fun to ride. I must just not like riding
bikes." Hence the question about shifters and what I can get away with for
an inexperienced and timid rider.

I'll take a couple saddles and stems with me when I give it to her. And
I'll probably even take a couple options for shifters. So, if it fits,
she'll be able to finally form an educated opinion about what she does and
doesn't like. Maybe I'll eve take the set of black Loscos I have, and let
her try them, but they'd go out on indefinite loan only. I'm attached to
them, even though they don't work for me.

And if it doesn't fit, which given her track record is a real possibility,
the bike will be in Atlanta where it will sell for more than I have in it,
or I'll let it go for free to someone it does.

So thanks for the opinions on shifters. It's nice to see it's a pretty even
split, which has encouraged me to give her the option, but I'll do it in
person when she and I take it out for a ride together. This is gonna be a
great holiday.

Cheers,
Paul

PS If anyone wants this old stuff I've taken off (plastic brake levers,
canti brakes, 7 speed shifters, cassette, chain, and probably the rear
derailer and 7 speed hub and or wheel) keep an eye out on the list. I MIGHT
offer it free for shipping when this is all said and done. Maybe there's a
frame out there for them.
