[RBW] Re: Introduction

2013-02-26 Thread 3wheelin
Patrick,
Welcome to the forum. I think that you have found an absolutely
outstounding place to come and learn about cycling. i know that I had
when I stumbled upon the site. I too suffer from neuro problems. I
have MS and neuropathy in my hands and feet. Riding my bike has saved
my life in many ways, but the emotional freedom that comes with it is
perhaps the most priceless. Many sufferers of vertigo and nastagmus
can, for some strange reason, still function rather well on a bicycle.
Diet and excercise are the best for neuro problems...and what better
form of excercise than seeing the world from two wheels? Rivendell and
GP gives people like us an outlet with the cushy ride, sitting up high
and easy gearing. It's amazing what you have accomplished already..you
have a great outlook. You should be proudPeter G

Hello! I've posted on a few threads, but thought I should officially
 introduce myself.

I bought my Hunqapillar early last Spring, and have been delighted ever
since. Due to brain injury, I have constant neurological vertigo. I was
amazed to discover that my bludgeoned brain (seewww.MindYourHeadCoop.org)
and related proprioception via going barefoot had reached a point I could
actually ride a bike. After testing out several and getting a feel for what
worked and what was more challenging, I settled on Rivendell for it's
hearty stiffness and go anywhere I'd be willing to ride capacity. I ride
either barefoot or in leather soled moccasins on wood platform pedals Grant
 had laying around.

Last Spring and Summer, I was able to ride a number of S20Os as well as 9
days on the Great Divide Mountain Bike Trail, going from central Colorado
to the New Mexico border before a loud motorcycle overloaded my brain on
one of the few short paved sections.

Having the Hunqa has opened up personal transportation for me (besides
walking and running), and I love riding it just to ride, or to trail heads
and running from there, as well as camping (since I can't carry weight
above my waist, it opens up going bikepacking my with daughters -- a real
 delight!).

 I have a few pictures up here:http://www.flickr.com/photos/32311885@N07/

 With abandon,
 Patrick

[RBW] New Sam experience

2012-07-27 Thread 3wheelin
I just took my spanking brand new 56cm double TT green Sam for its
first real driveI own a Homer and have been wanting this bike for
awhile...All i can say is WOW I bought all new parts (of which
i've never had new) at Rivendell last Saturday, along with the frame
and brought it home to have my LBS build up...My first ride was along
the river for about 9 miles on a roughly paved pathway...The bumps and
divets seemed to melt away. I always smile at just how butter smooth
and quiet the shifting is with the dura ace bar end shifters on my
albatross bars.. I was thinking I would never like this Sam as much as
my Homer, but i have to say...i like it better so far - not sure if
that is partly new bike syndrome or not. I was also a bit leary
about the double TT, but it has really grown on me and i think it's
down right cool now. I even had 2 different sets of people tell me
how nice my bike looked. That never happened on my Homer. I will have
pics soon, but i have my basket on a marks rack on front, along with
my tan handlebar bag and honey brooks saddle (awesome look with the
green)...Anyone out there contemplating a Sam but wondering if it can
compare to a Homer...as far as I'm concernedit absolutely
can...

exceptional over the past three days while I was at work. I woke up this
morning and it was cooler but could tell it would burn off. My wife is out
of town and we have a puppy so I can't get away for all day rides but I did
get in a 3hr ramble passing through Forest Park twice. When I first entered
Forest Park and ended up taking Fire Rd 1 which I had never ridden before.
It's quite steep in parts and so I just dismounted and just walked a few
sections which was fine. I was on my Hilsen and one area where it doesn't
do so great is steep scrabbly climbs. I guess I could have muscled up the
climb but that just didn't seem fun. I exited Forest Park and headed up to
Skyline on the pavement and took that for a little ways before dropping
back down into Forest Park via Saltzman and made my way down to Hwy 30 and
across the St Johns Bridge and back home, stopping for tacos and ice cream
 along the way.

It was just a really great ride. I was on my Hilsen with platform pedals
and wearing some Musa shorts and an LL Bean seersucker/hiking shirt I
recently purchased on sale. The shirt worked well except for on descents
where it tends to flap in the wind a bit too much for my taste. I guess I
could tuck it in and the problem would be solved.

After spending so much time focused on randonneuring for the past couple of
months it was really nice to just get out for a ramble. I'll do some
variation on the ride tomorrow and the next day. When my wife returns I'll
hopefully get out for an overnight camping trip.

comfortable and very English, sitting up so high. You can grab the
alba's near the stem and feel forward in the wind...I probably wont go
back to the noodles, but then again...never say never...As far as

can't say I'm really comfortable with them, so I'm thinking about
 giving Albas a try.

If anyone out there has made the switch from drops to Albas, I'd love
 to hear from you before.

Beside general impressions, I'm curious how the wider Albas perform in
dense traffic. Also thoughts about Alum vs Cromo.

I am using an 8 cm stem with the Noodles. I'm hoping the 10 cm stem
that replaced will be perfect for the Albas. If so, beside the bars I
would just need brake levers and the Nitto shim from Riv. And grips or
tape of some kind. Maybe $100-120 for the lot.

Any used Albas out there looking for a home?

 Jay
