[RBW] Re: Balance Bikes for Bouncing Babies

2019-03-10 Thread Andrew Patteson
Hi Justin,

My kid ended up with a great one from TykesBykes (later called Stampede),
but the website Two Wheeling Tots has tons of info and was a huge help for
me in choosing. No affiliation.

IIRC my son was 2 1/2 when we got him the balance bike and was riding a
pedal bike like a champ right after turning 4.

I wanted real tires, not foam. I liked the idea of the hand brake, though
they likely won't use it for a while.

Exciting times!

Best wishes,
Andrew P. in SLC, UT

Re: [RBW] Saddle Sack Med and Leg Strike

2018-05-15 Thread Andrew Patteson
I have used a cork from a wine bottle, cut down a bit and with a piece of
thin wire run through it (and through the leather strap) to help it stay in
place. I don't mind it lightly brushing my legs as I pedal, but I wanted
just a little bit more offset.

[RBW] Re: clem smith L and ibert babyseat

2016-11-17 Thread Andrew Patteson

It's *really, really great* to have the kiddo up front, but yes there are
definitely fit challenges. Long tt with swept-back bars is the only way it
would work for many people. As pictured above I can straddle the bike
between saddle and kidseat, but it is tight enough to require extra care
when stopping and starting. If you are okay being flexible with your
riding position you might want to move your saddle back a bit, too, or even
use a shorter nosed saddle. It is more convenient if you can dedicate a
bike to being the kid hauler. If you do need to use the bike for other
purposes, it's pretty easy to remove the seat from the clamped on mount
(but then you have the mount there, which is a long piece of steel pointing
in the general direction of your genitalia... I put a slit-open raquetball
on the end of mine when riding without the seat).

There are other front mount seats that attach to the tt, but the iBert
clamps between headset and stem extension. The Clem L seems like it might
be perfect if you can figure out the fit variables for the two riders. If
you do get an iBert definitely get the seat pad and the "steering wheel".

My little guy is now close to being too big for his seat. That will be a
sad day.

OP, let me know if you have other questions and I'll try to answer.

Best wishes,

Andrew in SLC

Re: [RBW] XL frames and 650b experiences

Thank you, Ryan. I had one nice bruise but nothing at all bothersome...
the bike has a bent fork and a bent top tube, so while I still have the
frame hanging in my shed, I kind of doubt it will ever see road again.
What a great, great ride it was. Just about all of the components in the
photo are now hanging on a same-year Bianchi Limited. Some will be making
their way to a '74 Motobecane Grand Record 650b build I am (very slowly)
working on.

And yikes!! Sorry to hear it. I hope you heal quickly and are back
rolling soon.

Best wishes,

That's really nicely done, masmojo. You can also use Gear Ties, though I
don't know how they do over the course of years.

I have the same Soma rack and it's a nice, relatively wide base for the
basket.

Good idea, and let me further clarify my previous comment -- derailler
hanger misalignment is pretty common, more so than dropout misalignment.

Me too. There's an alloy FSA with that same 32.5mm setback -- the SL-220
.
It's not exactly beautiful but it works well. I have one on a bike but I
had to pull out the red plug and wrap the post with twine to cover up the
logo. They are not made anymore but pop up on ebay from time to time.

Best,
