[RBW] Sugino Wide/Low Double Feedback -- Triple vs Double
Perfect for me. I sometimes go all the way to top gear in a tailwind; much more often to lowest gear climbing up from rhe riverbank. Both are just right. Spacing between is fine. [RBW] Ride Report - proto Appaloosa
Hi Bunch! I can report on a recent first ride. I am 53yrs old, 183#, 5'11 tall, 89 pbh, so a bit short of average in torso for my pbh. I bought a brown Appaloosa prototype in size 57.5, which was designed for 89-ish pbh according to the listing. I set my Brooks B68 at 77cm/30.5. The bike has a bullmoose Bosco bar, equivalent to 12cm stem length, which I set at minimum insertion height. It is a beautiful bike, and the proportions please my eye. It looks exactly right. 30 minutes and 6 miles later, shoulder pain told me I was reaching too far to the bars, though. I didn't realize that the long bike would fit long, too. Since I noticed that Keven runs a dirt drop stem on his long bike, I called him about it. He told me this bike's top tube is 4cm longer than that of my 60cm Sam. To get back those 4cm, I ordered an 8cm stem. I intend to sell the bullmoose Bosco bar with the Sam and move Sam's 55cm Bosco bar to the Appaloosa. I think fit will be just right for me. I wonder now if the Cheviot and the prototype Clems are long in this manner. Another way - how does your stem length compare between these long bikes and your other Rivs? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] A Tough Bike To Love
About setting up a long mountain bike: we have 1 long mountain bike, '87 Schwinn sierra, and one short mtb, '90 BstoneMB-1, and I have ridden same rugged trail -/+ 300' elevation on both. The long one feels stable going down fast, more work going back up. The short one feels easy to handle, and to power, going up slow, and still a blast under gravity power. My expectation going into a Clem would be to buy into it and have fun with the whole experience. For me that would include growing some better climbing skills. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Longer front fender? Mystery bike wanted one.
Still in the living room, and I'm having fun detailing the brown mystery bike. It arrived with 50mm Big Bens, followed shortly by P50 Longboards. The lovely fork dropouts favor a rear-bias for the front fender stays. I favor full protection for everything on my Mark's rack, including the headlight out front. The stock front fender is too short for all that, but hey, that rear fender is way longer. Hmmm... Turns out everything that makes a fender become front detaches easily, and a rear becomes a front just as easily. So for the price of a second set, I have a custom-length front and a standard length rear P50 Longboard fender. [RBW] Re: WTB Jitensha Bar
Hi Amit, I bought one of those flat-but-bent-back Nitto bars from Jitensha several years ago. It's got the red Nitto heat-treat band around it, like the $65 unavailable one on the Jitensha Studio site. I wanted more room outside the last bends, so I made some press-fit solid 6061 aluminum extensions, coated the press-in parts with Houshold (Hogar) glue that GP had recommended for attaching cork grips, and pressed them in. So mine is about 1-1/2 longer on both ends than as-received. I installed that bar with a Dirt Drop stem in a 1987 Schwinn Sierra frame. After a few weeks I didn't like the wrist position, so I replaced the above with an early Stumpjumper riser bar/double clamp stem combo. That's what stuck. If I was you, though, I wouldn't trust somebody else's modified handlebar. At a minimum, I would cut off that hack's extensions and see what I had left. it's pretty narrow like that, though. Thanks for plowing through my story! Please respond if you still want it. Ben On Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 1:55:26 AM UTC-5, Amit Singh wrote: For the Quickbeam! [RBW] Re: OT (grant-related, not Riv-related): lo-carb, high fat protein, ketosis, c.
I started low-carb diet on Sunday 10/26, at 195# dressed for work. I clicked over when Grant blogged that fat accumulating on the outside is an indicator of things going on inside. So far the change has been relatively easy - one grocery trip, some low blood sugars (like 47, 50, 53, 57) and some high ones (like 234, 268) as I adjust my insulin pump program while my body processes change. I use fatsecret.com to look up carb content in everything, and I still dose insulin according to actual carb content, low as it is. Reduction in insulin load is about 50% per day so far. Blood sugar deviates less, and are centered where I want them. Lost 3 pounds last week. Rode my 20mi round trip commute twice and was fine, enjoyed it. I'm encouraged, looking forward to another week. And to showing outcomes to my endocrinologist, who is also a type1 diabetic on a pump. She's skinny and her pump's glucose display is usually right around 70, so maybe it'll just be I told you so. [RBW] Re: Tuning Brake Squeal
RCW, I too spent some time in music. Do you remember hearing a universal tuning note called A440? Meaning the string, or whatever, moves 440 cycles per second. So braking causes some components on your bike to vibrate at the frequencies called high D (faster) and low E (slower). I spent less time in physics, more in engineering, and still can't figure out natural frequency, but the diameter of a string, its length and its tension might all affect pitch. Variables like those in a brake squeal situation could include rim diameter, rim sidewall stiffness/size, length/rigidity of brake arms and pads. Re: [RBW] Quick question on the Cheviot
Re MTB chain stay length: my 1990 MB-1 is much easier to pedal on long uphill trails than my 1987 Schwinn Sierra, and the Schwinn goes downhill like a rocket rail sled in comparison to the B'stone. Those two bikes are kind of at extremes of chainstay length - I think the MB-1 broke ground with short stays and the Schwinn is classic early trail bike. Just one - 1990 MB-1, biggest frame size offered. Early owner installed a Manitou 2 bumper fork. I put in fresh elastomers last year, and it's quite nice. The stock Ritchey stem was a neck-breaker race setup, way stretched out, so I changed to a dirt drop and now ride pretty comfortably. I've noticed over the years that suspension reduces bounce - tires don't stay airborne as long over roots and rocks - and I get a little better control in rough sections. I do like that. [RBW] Re: Help needed from the collective mind.
Hi Clayton. So Sorry! You're farther down that road than me, so I'd appreciate your advice in return. As far as riding goes, I'll offer something. My tingling, burning and yet numb finger symptoms went from tolerable to not so, just one month ago. Although there was some aggravation/trauma in July, in the form of an encounter with a caulking gun, the diagnosis by Orthopedist is carpal tunnel syndrome. Work involves a good bit of typing, and I've been type-1 diabetic for 40 years, so I assign to riding a minor significance in terms of its contribution to this condition. I rode above-saddle Alba bar for last 3 years; a big, new Hillborne since May with really high Bosco bar; yet carpal seized the day. Doc sold me a Hely Weber wrist brace to maintain neutral position at sleep, so I wear it to ride, also. My pain frequency and intensity are both improving, and riding has gotten much more comfortable. I've washed the brace without damaging it. Surgery may still be in my future, but I'm going to let the brace run its course first. I meet the bar by letting my forearm bring the neutrally-braced wrist and passive hand to the Bosco grip, and then I just allow my hand to guide that grip without flexing my wrist. So far, so good. Incidentally my grip is just purple cloth tape over cork tape, wrapped tightly by Rivendell's builder, and not very cushy. [RBW] Re: DIY 40-26 questions
Couple years ago i pulled the outer ring off my XD2 triple and put on a guard, leaving the 36-24 middle and inner rings as-is. The 36 was plenty high for me with 11 cog on 8spd cassette, and I could get to all the combos. New Hillborne runs guarded 40-26 with 12-34 8spd, and that's great, too (I do like the 40-26/12-34 better, though). I learned that a slightly longer bottom bracket can improve reliability of front shifts to low gear by moving it farther from the innermost spring travel position of the front derailer. With no third ring hanging out there to be concerned about reaching with the derailer, you can afford it now. [RBW] Re: Nitto Saddlebag Grip
Hi John. I bought a Nitto Grip with a Saddlesack M, and have used it on Brooks B15, B17 and B68, always with a rack under the bag - Nitto R14 on Schwinn Sports Tourer, Pletscher on Specialized Sirrus, and Nitto Campee on Rivendell Hillborne. Plays well enough with all of those. The Grip's offset changes the front-to-back position of the bag relative to the saddle, rack and wheel, but I haven't really cared. I bought it so I can take the bag with me, so I don't sweat security. Can't be too much worse than leather straps in saddle loops, though, can it? However, if you want better security, you could probably replace the Shimano quick-release with one of those carved-nut axle caps - Riv and Peter White sell them - I use one for a generator wheel but forget the brand name. Keep the keyed socket on your key chain, and spin it off pretty quickly. Good luck! Ben -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Saddle bags...do you leave 'em on or take 'em off when out in public?
I bought a black Saddlesack M in the first batch, along with a Nitto QR handle. It moves like this: - take the bag to the bedroom to load up tomorrow's clothes - leave the bag in the kitchen overnight to load up lunch before commuting - take the bag to the locker room to change into jeans and workshirt for the day - take the bag to the work area as lunchbox - back to the locker room, load up work clothes again - take the bag into the coffee shop to protect wallet, cell phone, pocket knife, tools on board. Don't know how I'd give up all the utility of a QR, actually. A bag in a basket - sure, but not subdivided, smooshy lunch space - losses in my book. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Question 27 wheel conversion to 700c wheels and maybe to 650b
Hi, Hugh. When my 1972 Sports Tourer started breaking spokes, Rich Lesnik built new 700C wheels with Synergy rims on my original hubs, which look like the Phil 'Rivy' hubs. Thus it needed no frame spacing change in the rear; and the O/C rear wheel improved the strength of the 120mm-spaced rear wheel. It's been all good since! I kept the original center-pull brakes by extending the shoe slots with an endmill to gain the 4mm or so of adjustment required. That's not a recommendation!! A brake with more reach would have been the safe approach. I looked over my '90 Bstone MB-1 with XT cantilevers, and if yours are similar, the brake shoe post will have to angle downward to contact a smaller wheel's rim, because there is no adjustment for rim diameter. I don't like the prospects - some of your braking force will be lost to a bending moment applied to the shoe's post, and the angled shoe will have more chance for tire contact. Those are old brakes, and mine are old eyes. Maybe the adjustment you need exists in a modern brake, or maybe I just didn't see it. So take a good look at yours! [RBW] Re: Experience with Long-Finger Gloves
From 60F to about 40F I wear plain leather work gloves, like yard gloves, from the local farm supply (TSC in Indiana). They keep the wind off and aren't hot as I warm up. Last pair was 11yrs old when I lost them, so trying deer skin gloves this year from same shop. So far, even better purchase on cork grips, and already soft. Re: [RBW] Front Rack ideas
I don't think it's a 2-strut. Re: [RBW] Re: Front Rack ideas
Great pictures, Earl! The Nitto front rack on that Bombadil - that's the one I want. Same one that's on the lead Atlantis photo on Riv's site. The big front rack sold today at Riv, as installed in the site video, obscures the beautiful fork legs. I prefer the rack leg proud of the fork leg so they both stand out. Not planning to use front panniers, so not making the utility tradeoff. [RBW] Re: Ride Review: The Appaloosa
Was reading RR27 this morning - my favorite touring tale, Luka the Wire-Haired Fox Terrier - and noticed the Vision Thoroughbred in the adjacent article. There are similarities to the Appaloosa. The author really liked that bike, and ended the story with a foreshadowing of things to come... I don't think this idea holds much water to anyone who saw Keven drop like a falcon on a vole during his Appaloosa-descent down Shell Ridge this past Sunday. With those l-o-n-g chainstays and diagatubes, the bike held a line over rough terrain that was elegant and true—and fast. This is not to mention all the other parts of the uphill-and-down single-track trail riding that the Appaloosa handled like, well, like its namesake. At 5'2,I never thought this design could be made small enough for me—but there it was, a little Appaloosa that I could stand over. I took it for a ride, and then rode it again, and then rode it some more…I took it for spins 4 days in a row and just fell in love. The Bosco's are crazy comfy and a million hand positions, goofy as they look. Upright, relaxed with elbows on the grips, crouched down with hands on the flats—whatever you need. This bike is really a bit of a revolution. Mine will be maybe the 7th (?) in the world and will be the only one with canti's, 26 wheels, and clearance for 55cm fatty tires and fenders. It'll be a Riv Chica War Horse! SO that's the news on the custom front. RCW -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Recently joined the group; and now a new Riv [frame] owner
Hi Tom! Similar story here - I bought the last green 60cm Hillborne sale frame, which was a shop return. With custom paint it'll be only a bit over $100 from new frame price - Yay! I'm at the low end of 60's pbh range, figuring to use bosco bars and enjoy the extra retreat. I have an Albatross bar with Silver bar-ends and mtb brake levers on a Specialized commuter, and it has served me Very Well. That machine, stock, had a flat bar road bike cockpit (grin), but the pursuit of comfort brought a low-rise mtb bar, a moustache bar on a steer tube extender, and finally the Albatross, where comfort lives. Good chance you'll like it, too. It would be fun to swap pics with you down the road. What say? [RBW] Re: Recently joined the group; and now a new Riv [frame] owner
After discussing experience, preferences and finances, Jared told me my 5'11 x 89pbh wants the 60cm, and he proposed the last green sale frame. Given the frame discount, I asked about custom paint, and Keven Mowen hooked me up. His painter's backlog was low enough that my frame could be done by month end - today! Interesting idea that, splitting the cables. You sound like you've done cables before, so if Jared buys in you might as well follow your bliss.
