[RBW] ISO: Trail Bike

2024-02-07 Thread Bob B
Asking for my little brother who lives in Flagstaff AZ and wants his first
“good bike” to go trail riding and bikepacking with his friends. He has a
pretty good budget but cant go over $1400.

It might not be a Riv. I persuaded one brother to get on a Riv (a Sam). but
this brother needs something different at the moment.I was thinking a used
Surly, Sklar (maybe long shot), Crust. Anyone selling or know someone
selling? Any general recommendations about makes or where to look? Not sure
what other online communities are out there where B//S/T are done on a
trust level like this great one and BOB.

Thanks in advance.

[RBW] Alternative to Velo Orange Wheel Stabilizer

2020-12-13 Thread Bob B
Besides what the subject says...

I'm looking for a solution to wheel tippage while using a regular kickstand
that:

   - Does *not* require you to do anything (e.g.: flick down a flickstand)
   - Isn't dangerous
   - Looks cleaner/simpler than the VO product.
   - Lasts a while so I can forget it's there
   - Can be a DIY solution

Include pics on your bike if you have a good setup!

Thanks,

2020-03-01 Thread Bob B
You can tell these are my favorite bars because I have four of them to my name
right now. But I only need two so I’m selling these. Both have been mounted and
ridden but cared for and are in good condition.

Pics: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1NCxudQcG_5bKMKEU98ji6c9LnQ55tpMZ

Steep local NYC pickup discounts can be negotiated! These are so big they cost
more than $20 to ship!

52cm HT Alu: $65 shipped
55cm CRMO: $50 shipped

Both together? $105 shipped

Please PM for inquiry.

Thank you!

[RBW] Will a Tubus Duo mount to a 700c Hunqapillar fork w/o p-clamps?

2019-09-12 Thread Bob B
Has anyone tried this combination—to mount a Tubus Duo to a 700c Hunq fork?

The dimensions on the Tubus drawing indicate 165mm between mounting
eyelets... the distance between those two points on my early 2016 Waterford
700c Hunq fork is more like 180. Am I right to assume that there's no
chance this rack will work without a p-clamp or Nitto clamp bands?

If anyone's mounted this on a Hunq successfully, let me know!

Hey Steve,

Bill is right -- there's no need to Rinko to get to NYC via Amtrak.

I did the opposite trip, from here in NYC down to DC a few years ago, the
rode to Pittsburg via C/GAP. I called and there are particular trains
(usually a few per day) that have a storage car for bikes. Fully assembled,
I even had some bags on it, it was no problem.

That said, to Rinko your bike would be great for other trips and uses

[RBW] Kickstand tire rub

2019-02-11 Thread Bob B
I’ve wanted to use a kickstand for a while on my hunq; I currently run 55mm big
bens and 2.10 smart sams. After I mounted the standard Plescher model, I

Does anyone know if the bulkier kickstand Riv recently started offering is
designed to clear wider tires? Or, is there another brand, or some other
creative solution to this?

Re: [RBW] Re: clean-ish routing for generator lights

2019-01-25 Thread Bob B
Personally, I would still go under the downtube because the cable will
never be in the way. If you plan on using fenders later and wanted to be
slick you could wire in a connector just after it swoops under the bb,
which, if you put on fenders and wanna disappear the wire under the rear
one, you could plug that new wire into the connector at that point.

I don't get to do a ton of trail riding, as I live in the city, but the
Minnewaska trails are the best I've ever ridden. Long, flowy, easy, super
scenic. Areas where you come out into open prairies that are the closest
thing I've seen on the east coast to those bucolic hills the Rivbike team
gets to ride to from their shop. So I'm game for that, but also open to
other ideas.

[RBW] OT- Death Valley on foot

2019-01-12 Thread Bob B
Hey Ant! I’m envious because DV is one if my favorite places in earth and my
wife and I have backpacked in there quite a lot. We always do the vegas rental
car method too.

You should be conservative as to where you drive the car, always but even more
so with the shutdown. When the road signs say 4x4 only, you should really take
heed, or carefuy drive only a a mile or two in if that gets you where you wanna
be. You wont get a cell signal in there and flats are common. The rangers, if
any are working, will have the latest on road conditions. Sign in at the
visitor center if you plan to go into the back country and tell a friend at
home your plans... sorry if you already know this.

With the shutdown services are limited. Check social media and call the visitor
center at furnace creek—I think that is being kept open by funding from a
private foundation.

A good resource is Steve Hall’s website www.panamintcity.com ... check his
pages on death valley basics and read up on safety and park regulations (no
fires, etc)... very important to do your research for route planning too if
youre going deep into the back country. Steve uses an interesting technique
using a mix of google earth and gps, and has hiked hundreds of canyons, many of
which are seldom visited. He posts detailed trip reports with photos and maps
that are great reference if you decide to mimic a route.

He’ll also tell you to get Michael Diginnet’s book, Hiking Death Valley, which
I can confirm is worth every penny. Its one of those epic labors of love.

DV is a beautiful place. So huge and expansive, otherworldly, truly wild. Be
safe and I hope you have a great time!! Carry lots of water! I hope you post
pics when you’re back.

And feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions.

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar fender options

Hey Kurt,

Seems like you have a lot of replies already and I'm late on this, but I do
have a 2016 58cm Hunq. I have Velocity Atlas rims and I run 55mm big bens

I know that's not as big as you wanna go, especially with cliffhanger rims.
But I dunno if I'd go too much more than that with fenders, honestly, even
with Atlas.

Hope that helps

[RBW] Re: nail polish suggestions

2018-08-29 Thread Bob B
With Waterford frames, you can call them and order actual touchup paint to
match. However those models are not Waterford, so if I were you I'd just
call Riv and inquire about the actual touchup paint. They aren't going to
force red nail polish down your throat if you tell them you want an actual
match.

[RBW] Re: In Japan! Any recommendations?

2018-07-26 Thread Bob B
I went to Blue Lug Hatagaya a few months ago. Tons of Rivendells, Nitto
galore, cool bike knick knacks, bells/whistles, tshirts etc. They also have
LUG Hatagaya, a cafe/restaurant/bar around the corner, nice vibes. Hatagaya
is pretty residential so for a tourist not much else to do out there, but
not a far train/bus ride from Shinjuku.

Not bike related: Possibly my favorite cafe on earth would be Lion
<https://goo.gl/maps/P5U76B32SCz>. In Shibuya. You have to be quiet inside,
because they have an ongoing program of classical music on vinyl played
through a spectacular custom 2-story sound system.

2018-05-30 Thread Bob B
On a repainted frame that clearly has a coat of paint in the derailleur
threads... how crucial is it to chase those threads? Is it incredibly
unwise to attempt to slowly mount my RD, backing out of the threads every
1/4 turn or so?

I ask because I don't have a tap handy and I'm under a time crunch to get
my bike rebuilt! if theres another tapless workaround, please share! Or,
tell me if I'm worried for no reason.

Thanks,

I don't see pump pegs in that photo but, the Longboard model would afford

Could that help quell some of the reactions some folks have, i.e." see the
gap and hate it from the get-go"?

Re: [RBW] Re: What type of bike would make you buy another riv

2018-02-05 Thread Bob B
That's a really good point, Bill and Steve. I'd still like to see Riv to
expand their low end taiwan made partially-tigged simple paint job
framesets. For instance, Surly's not making (and I cant really imagine them
making) a partially tigged rosco-esque mountain mixte, or anything close to
a Clem.

I empathize with the partially tigged thing on another level because I'd
love to use my Riv (hunq) as my primary city commuting bike, but I've found
that I'm too nervous locking it outside on an errand. I can see the appeal
of a great frame that *doesn't* catch anyone's eye...

Re: [RBW] What type of bike would make you buy another riv

2018-02-03 Thread Bob B
I want a [rosco] mountain mixte in my size to be my ultimate utilitarian
city bike that I can ride far and load up and camp with (I was in between
sizes at 89.5pbh with short arms, so, like, a 58cm with no more than 60cm
virtual top tube). I'd junk it up visually but in a way I like (call it
"beausage") and have it secretly be the smoothest most satisfying ride. And
I see the tigs as an asset in NYC -- can't have a dandy-looking bike in
this city.

[RBW] Which tire was ridden on your first excursion into 650b?

2018-01-30 Thread Bob B
I started with Swiftys on Synergys. They were great but wore out fast. I
switched to regular Schwalbe Marathons and are still riding the same pair.
Nothing flashy about them, but after 8–9k miles, they are good as ever for city
commuting.

PM me if interested. Local pickup in NYC/Brooklyn can be arranged.

*Sackville Bar Tube Olive:* New condition. Always kinda wanted one and when
Riv announced it was discontinued I jumped on it, but then realized it
doesn't really work if you're already using a basket and a shop sack like
me (no longer available from Riv). I added some paracord pulls on the
zippers to make them easier to grab. $60 shipped

*Velocity Atlas front wheel:* 700c, 36 spoke, velocity hub, dt champion
spokes. built by velocity and bought from Riv. Includes velox rim tape and
orig skewer. 500 miles, perfect shape. $100 local pickup in NYC/Brooklyn. I
can ship but really dont want to and it'd be extra.

*Old Parts Bin:*
*If you want over $60-worth from this stuff, take 20% off.*

*Brakes (pair), Bridgestone Self-centering:* includes hardware, nutted, In
good shape. $30 shipped

[RBW] Re: Found Upright riding worse than drops riding.

2017-12-09 Thread Bob B
I always ride upright and I've found that if the saddle height is about
even with the grips (or grips just a smidge higher), that is a sweet spot,
assuming the grips are comfy and the saddle's broken in.

Sometimes you see these setups depicted on the riv website/blug with the
stem at max height, much above the saddle height. Ive tried that but, for
long-distance, the butt starts to hurt.

So you could try again, lowering the stem so that grips are at a height
that encourages a better butt-hands pressure distribution?

[RBW] Re: Silver Shifter 2 project revived

I bet it will work really well, because Silvers do and Riv cares, duh...
Plus, prototypes are prototypes. Design is iterative.

I might be talking out of my ass here, but I was also kinda thinking the
look of these shifters—besides taking a note from the old Suntours—could be
part of an evolution in Riv's design aesthetic... industrial/post-war
ridges/notches/grooves like the Appa fork and, Rosco graphics? Rodini
headtube. The Chocomoose bars have a rigid, less flowy shape to them... I'm
on board.

Doug,

A good option for an inexpensive starter dynamo is the Sanyo hub that Peter

I've been running on for a little while now on my commuter, which I lock

It reminded me of this kinda korny but super interesting video on bicycle

Particularly interesting is the section on "power-assisted" bicycles

e-bikes different there. Main takeaway: power-assisted bikes are to help
people get up hills without straining. Not to break the sound barrier.

[RBW] Casual Observations on Japanese Metropolitan Area Bike Transportation

2017-11-20 Thread Bob B

I just visited Japan for the second time (this time on business, mostly in
the city of Kobe), and noticed a lot of interesting differences between
Kobe’s bike culture and the one in NYC. One obvious caveat: I don't live in
Japan, so I don't know how representative my experience is to the actual
state of things. Anyhow... a few (perhaps somewhat perfunctory)
observations:

*People use practical bikes.* At least 95% of the bikes I saw men and women
ride were step-throughs, often outfitted with fenders, baskets, kids' seats
and sidewall dynamos. People dress in normal clothes, and business suits.
Bikes are about getting to work, running errands, carrying groceries, etc.

*People don’t ride fast.* There are not tons of bike lanes per se, so
people are riding at casual paces on the sidewalk, and seem very courteous
about passing pedestrians. I didn’t see any entitled cyclists shouting “GET
OUT OF THE WAY YOU’RE IN A BIKE LANE.” They’re in a city filled with peds,
not on a back country road, so they ride slower. They wait for lights. I
don’t think I saw anyone wearing a helmet, though I’m sure some people do.

I witnessed a young woman biking across an intersection, when an old man on
a motorbike coasted into the crosswalk on a collision course with her. They
both slammed on their brakes, then she crossed in front of him before he
continued. No words or looks exchanged. Anyone who bikes in NYC can imagine
how differently that would have played out here.

*People don’t need lots of locks.* The euro-style wheel lock seems to be
enough. Bikes aren’t attached to anything like a fixed rack or street sign.
What a luxury!

*People bike into old age.* I saw many elderly people on ancient steel
bikes with relaxed riding stances and comfy seats.

The dominant bike culture seemed to be based on practicality and getting
around; a classic bike culture. I wondered how much of that can be
attributed to the relative level of racing-focused bicycle marketing there.
It was really fun watching people ride and looking at the bikes parked
outside, most of which were cheap and from labels I didn’t recognize. I
thought a lot about how all the points above are the ways I like to ride
(with the exception of riding on the sidewalk), and how what usually feels
like an outcast way of riding in NYC is the mainstream somewhere else.

Conclusion: I want to get a Riv step-through.

Yep, that's exactly why I ordered a pair of the A10s from you last month,

get them. On my Velocity Synergies it looks like they'll measure pretty

Cool ride! And cool bike! Boscos!

I've been wondering about those 718 trips. Was it a good bunch? I wish we
New Yorkers didn't have to get on a train to get to some decent bicycling.

If I were you I would go up to a triple if you wanna do lots more long
rides like this, but at least a double. Every ride I do upstate I end up
using all 3 chainrings. I've never had a 1x setup, so I cant speak to what
you'd be missing out on. Maybe a greater physical challenge? But two or
three chainrings = convenience!

[RBW] Re: Fender Mounted Rear Dynamo Light?

2017-10-28 Thread Bob B
This week I wired a tail light (not fender-mounted, technically, but out on
the back of a Tubus rack in more or less the same position).

I ran it inside my SKS chromoplastic fenders. I read about this in a few
places on the internet, it's not original to me.

   1. Ran wire along bottom of down tube, one zip tie at other end (stress
points) and a small bead of silicone gel to hold it in place along the
   length.
   2. Swung under BB, using a spare piece of fender hardware as a guide,
threaded onto the cable guide bolt.
   3. Drilled hole in fender just above where it's mounted to the bridge,
and again where it needs to come out for the light.
   4. Inserted rubber grommets at each location (to protect the wire).
   5. Ran the wire inside the fender and covered tightly with HVAC tape.
Made sure to leave a little extra slack between the BB guide and where it
   enters the fender.
   6. Cut the wire at the above location, bought and crimped on a set of
Supernova gold-plated connectors from Peter White Cycles. This was to allow
me to remove the fender w/o undoing all the wiring. Theoretically, I could
have a second wire I connect here and route a different way for a
   fenderless setup.

Here are some pics. No pics
of the HVAC tape. It does the job, though. It's smooth, makes good contact
with the fenders and is easy to clean.

I think it's pretty slick. The only thing I'm a little worried about is how
it will hold up in the long term underneath the BB. It's a schmidt wire, so
it's pretty heavy duty. Still, I might try to cover that portion up with
some more HVAC tape.

Looks like they've been mounted before, but barely used. Seem to be aligned

My theory is that somehow they wound up on a bike that someone bought on

[RBW] Anyone try the new Fairweather Rain Poncho?

2017-08-07 Thread Bob B

Has anyone tried the Fairweather rain poncho? It looks pretty good; I'm
particularly interested in the elastic band that will fit snugly over
Alba's AND a Wald basket!

Which would be awesome, because my Vaude poncho barely covers my bars and
often blows up out of place (it has no elastic).

Anyway, been doing more rain riding lately and was considering springing
for this, and an endorsement from someone on the list would probably cause
me to buy it.

Awesome! You're right, there are sections of the OCA that are really
choppy, where the trail ends and you have to hop off, and find your way

there are not a lot of long, easy dirt trails around NYC.

Glad you had a good ride, though.

ride. Would you mind posting route details? With the weather warming up,
I'm starting to think about rides I wanna come do up there.
