Thanks for that trilogy, Marc -- not only for the ride report and photos,
but for the post-ride logistics, as well. That looked like a great trip!

It would be nice if there was more than one train a day that linked DC with
Pittsburgh so that you could arrive at a decent hour, and if you also
weren't required to put your bike in a box to bring it onboard. But at
least you can bring a bike on that train route -- while bikes can be
brought onboard all off-peak NJ Transit trains here in New Jersey, Amtrak's
Northeast Corridor trains (linking Boston, NYC, Philly and DC) allow only
folding bikes.

Re: [RBW] (f)Atlantis gets a new look

2015-02-18 Thread Bob E
Sean,

To answer your question about bar height: I just installed mine on the bike
and I haven’t ridden it yet, but I’m starting off with just leaving the
stem at the height where it was when I had the drops on (I had the tops of
the bar a little lower than the saddle); this now puts the Albatross bar at
roughly level with the saddle. With this set-up, I figure I’ll still have
some angle in my back, and I would still be able to get into a comfortable
lower position by putting my hands on the forward section with the long-ish
top tube. So for me, I don’t want to set the bar too high. That's the
theory, anyway -- we’ll see how it goes!

I'm still in the contemplation mode for a bar switch. I've got a Trek 520
touring bike from the early 1990s that currently has Noodle bars. I'm
thinking about converting this into a more upright, ride-around-town bike.
For this use, an Albatross seems like a great choice. I'm curious about
the ideal height of the Albatross bars. Is the goal to get the stem up so
that it is level with the saddle - which would make the bars even higher,
or is the goal to end up with the bars being level with the saddle (and the
 stem a bit lower)?

The other idea bouncing around in my head is to obtain an albastache bar
(rather than the albatross) for this bike. This bar, at least in my head,
would retain more of the touring nature of my Trek, while also providing
the option of a more upright position than my noodles. Since I have never
been on a bike with a 'stache bars, I have a hard time even imagining what
 this combination would be like.

Any advice, comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

but I just don't think I'm ready for mesh shoes just yet in these temps!
Maybe some insulated boots, like Sorels.

I appreciate your input. And speaking of inspiration, you've certainly
inspired me to get out more in the winter months -- aside from skiing, I
used to pretty much hibernate in winter, but after reading about your
exploits, I picked up my first pair of snowshoes (MSR) last year. Winter is
fun!

Regards,

Bob

He meant well. He's probably gotten used to seeing all those same looking
off-the-shelf racing bikes with matched all-black groupsets and no
personalization. So, to him, Hugh's bike -- a gorgeous machine, by the way
-- looked like an assemblage of parts. Parts all carefully selected based
on utility, but not your typical-looking bike by most folks.

I'm using 44/30 chainrings and a 12-27 10-speed cassette on my 650B bike,
giving me a 96 gear-inch high and a 29 gear-inch low. I spend most of the
time in the 44 ring (cruising while in the middle of the cassette gets me
around 70 gear-inches), while the smaller ring is used for climbing. This
range works great for me.

I wash my wool clothing by hand, using Eucalan. It contains lanolin, and
they recommend not rinsing after a wash, so that the lanolin and eucalyptus
oils are retained (in addition to conditioning the fibers, those oils also
act as moth and flea repellants).

[RBW] Re: Cotton and Wool Winter Army Gear

2014-02-02 Thread Bob E
I don't have any army surplus clothing (I do have a US Army woolen blanket,
though), but I am also a recent convert to wool for cycling. After my
(supposedly) breathable jacket's zipper broke, I did the same thing: I
switched from those same synthetic materials to the layered wool approach.
A base layer, a somewhat heavy jersey, and a thin Ibex zippered jacket work
very well -- I'm no longer drenched in sweat at the end of my ride. (And I
imagine mountain biking would provide an even tougher test of the
clothing's performance.)

I'm curious about the cotton snow smock; does it work better than wool as
an outer garment? Is it somewhat water/wind resistant?

[RBW] Re: Winter Delaware Water Gap trip

2013-11-27 Thread Bob E
Mike B -- I haven't ridden between those two points, so don't have a route
mapped out. But if I were to ride from the northern end of the DR Canal
trail to say, Columbia, I would generally hug the river -- except that I
would skirt around Phillipsburg to the east (via Green, Roseberry, and
Belvidere roads). North of Belvidere, the only road along the river in that
area is Route 46, which I would avoid (traffic, iffy shoulders at times),
so I would take some of the quieter and more scenic roads to the east
(Sarepta, Koeck, and Linaberry roads). Around Columbia it gets tricky, as
I-80 interchanges with Routes 46 and 94 there, and there are some
high-speed ramps. I would probably get on Route 46 from Walnut Road just
south of Columbia and then ride the short distance to town on the shoulder
(wider here) of the southbound lane just to avoid that mess.

Another option would to cross into Pennsylvania at Easton (a portion of
the Delaware Canal trail just south of Easton is still closed) and take the
river roads on that side, but I'm even less familiar with those roads.

Just my quick two cents!

Bob

[RBW] Re: Winter Delaware Water Gap trip

2013-11-26 Thread Bob E

Thanks very much for the info, Paul – it’s good to hear that the trail is
no longer disjointed; I’ll have to give it a go!

For anyone who might be interested in other trail rides along the Delaware
River, a little further south of the Delaware Water Gap is a rail trail
that runs alongside both the river and the feeder canal for the Delaware
and Raritan Canal: it runs 31 miles from Frenchtown down to Trenton on the
New Jersey side (passing through some lovely little river towns), and is in
excellent condition. At Trenton, the trail turns northeast into the
interior of New Jersey on the old towpath of the Delaware and Raritan Canal
proper and runs for another 34 miles to the city of New Brunswick. The
trail is also accessible by NJ Transit trains at various points along the
main canal, so one can ride one way and take a train back. Here is a link:

On the Pennsylvania side runs the Delaware Canal trail; some parts of the
path had been damaged by storms over the years, so its surface condition
varies considerably depending on the location:

Using the several bridges that span the Delaware in this area (including a
beautiful Roebling-built pedestrian suspension bridge), one can put
together a number of loop rides of varying length; here’s a link to some
photos taken during a 35-mile ride I took in September from Lambertville,
NJ to Frenchtown, NJ and back, utilizing both sides of the river:

2013-11-25 Thread Bob E
Looks like a great trip! Nice photos, too -- love that late-autumn sun!

Regarding the McDade trail: Was it continuous all the way from the
Dingman's Ferry bridge to Hialeah? I've been hesitant to ride that, as the
other maps I've seen show the trail as being disconnected, with missing
bridges.
