[RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho... stem question

2024-03-12 Thread Brian McDermott

I went from Billies to orthos on my Appaloosa, had to go from a 120 to 130
for the extra sweep. Finding a suitable 26.0 stem was a challenge, ended up
with a Miyata pantographed stem from eBay.

48mm. I also had bilenky dimple the chain stays; it fit a 48 without it but

I love this bike as a dedicated tourer but often pull the rear rack for
local riding. I find the mustache bars with the 100mm stem allows for
"stretching out" on longer days in the saddle.
I'm outfitted with 35mm tires because of the VO fenders, which I find
very helpful for mid-Atlantic and mid-West multi-day touring. I'd love to
try it on the C Towpath with wider rubber, but would miss the comfort
 that fenders give.

[RBW] Re: Susie / Appaloosa indecision

2024-02-08 Thread Brian McDermott
I haven't ridden a Susie, but do have an Appaloosa. If you're primarily
commuting and also doing a little bit of trail stuff, the Appa is built for
you. A perfect commuter, great for loaded touring, and I've only done light
local trails with mine so far, which it's great on with Billie bars, but it
has ample tire clearance that with knobbies and the right bars it would be
great for rougher trails. Even on pavement, with hands forward of the brake
levers it feels like a road bike. Truly an all-rounder.

Hey Everyone. I'm seriously torn between a lugged Susie and an
Appaloosa later this year. Help me commit!

I commute and run errands (no question that's most of my mileage), but
fun rides are always in seek of trails with pavement as needed: day rides
plus occasional camping. I think each bike is overkill in a different way.
The Appaloosa is capable of longer distances and heavier loads, which
 would
be pretty rare for me. The bigger tires on the Susie would open up more
technical singletrack, which would be similarly rare.

What to do? I like the idea of the Appaloosa's more traditional look,
but I like the Susie's higher handlebars and increased crotch clearance.
I'm likely to want fenders, so I may end up not using the Susie's tire
clearance to full advantage (sidebar: what's the biggest tire that will
really fit under a B65? B69? Anyone know of another decent-looking jumbo
 fender?).

All opinions welcome, with special thanks to anyone who's ridden or
 owned both.

[RBW] Re: short brake pads on v brakes

2023-11-25 Thread Brian McDermott
I have, they suck. They are supposed to be a plug and play install, no
toe-in. They accomplish the desired purpose of not having to deflate the
tire to remove the wheel, but I couldn't get them to not squeal or vibrate
to the point that my headlight was cutting out. I tried sanding them, and
even gently took some sandpaper to my brake track, which worked for about
five brakings then it went right back to squealing like a banshee.
Frustratingly just put my stock pads back on and deal with letting out air
when the wheel needs to be removed.

[RBW] Re: Ride Report - First Century on my Atlantis - and at all

2023-11-18 Thread Brian McDermott
Nick- What a classic NOVA ride! I grew up in Leesburg and have ridden
countless miles on the W ranging from skating to school on it when I was
a freshman at Loudoun County High School, up until a few years ago when my
folks still lived in the area. I'd be interested in seeing your route and
trying it sometime; I rode the GAP/C last year from Pitt to DC on my
Hillborne, tried it again this fall on my Appaloosa, but my knee gave out
on me by the time we reached Cumberland and I had to bail. This looks like
it would be fun to try in the spring.

Re: [RBW] Re: Whoosa Getting an Appaloosa? 2023

2023-05-26 Thread Brian McDermott
I snagged a purple! I've been on the fence about the looong Rivs, and love
my 650b conversion Hillborne, but due to the conversion, it's off-road
abilities are somewhat hindered by the risk of pedal strike, especially in
PA where the trails tend to be very rocky. The Appa has been growing on me,
and when they announced they were getting a batch I couldn't get the idea
out of my head, literally can't have been having dreams of a build. Then
when the colors were unveiled, I thought Lime was a no-brainer, but the
purple grew on me over the last couple of days, so that's what I went with.
I plan on using it partly as a daily driver, and thinking with a thieve's
brain, I think it would stand out less while locked up than a bright green?
Maybe? Anyway, I'm excited for it to arrive; I have pretty much all of the
parts for a quick build, including XTR brakes and levers. This'll be my
first new-new Riv; I got my Hillborne from this group, same for my Bleriot
(which got moved along a year+ ago).

but I kept the bars. We'll see if they work for the Appaloosa. I do have a
pair of Albatross bars around as a backup. I bought a used pair of
 Vittoria
Terreno Dry tires (Thanks, Joe!) that are 47 mm wide as my starter pair.
Not sure what type of tire I'll end up with, but these look like a decent
 compromise to start.

It's been a lot of fun acquiring old parts, I'm going with an XTR rear
 derailleur, Dura-ace clamp-on front, XT parallel-push V-brakes. I had Rich
build up a pair of wheels with a SON dynamo, also my first dynamo bike.

I'm going for the Limeolive, can't quite get excited about the purple.
I really wanted mermaid, but oh well.

[RBW] Re: Nitto 32F Rack weight limit?

2023-02-04 Thread Brian McDermott
I've always thought the "weight limit" on that rack was absurdly low,
especially for such an expensive item. If you put a bag or basket on it,
there's half of the weight capacity taken up already. They just put that
very conservative rating on it so that you don't load it up with 25 lbs of
crap. I would say 15 is safe, and really, who would want that much weight
that high anyway?

Re: [RBW] Re: Are Paul brakes worth the money?

2023-01-07 Thread Brian McDermott
I've had the Racers, Mini-Motos, and the touring cantis. The Racers worked
well, but I prefer a canti or V brake. The Mini-Motos are fantastic and
provide excellent power and modulation, and the added bonus of working with
road levers without a problem.

Now for the touring cantis, I bought a set used on ebay, but when
installing them on my Sam, I noticed I was missing a pivot. So, I installed
one pair on the front, and a pair of Tektro TR720s on the rear while I
waited for a new pivot. I ran this setup for many months, and I've gotta
say, the difference between the Pauls and the Tektros was minimal. Of
course, the Pauls were on the front so that is a factor, but...pound for
pound, I think as far as cantis go, the Pauls aren't really worth it; aside
from looks and maybe slightly improved modulation, being MUSA is the
biggest selling point.

[RBW] Re: Rain! What do you ride?

2022-06-28 Thread Brian McDermott
I lived in Eugene, OR until a year ago. Fenders are essential, if you don't
have them you might as well not ride because you'll be soaked within a
minute or two. Aside from that, a decent rain jacket with a butt flap and
good vents, water resistant gloves in the winter, waterproof/resistant
boots (and maybe different shoes to change into when you get to your
destination), and some rain chaps were the go-to. A simple bike like a
fixed gear (or something with enclosed drive train etc) doesn't hurt, but
isn't essential.

Re: [RBW] Searching for bike akin to Quickbeam

2022-06-15 Thread Brian McDermott
I'm currently working on a 1983 Trek 640 fixed 650b conversion. I'm using
the Crust Spark fork and Velocity Atlas rims, and 42mm Paselas. I had the
Quickbeam in mind with this build, but the low trail fork kinda makes it
not-Quickbeam-ish, but the canti bosses and rock mounts adds Riv-ish
versatility.

 Eric,
I tried out a 120mm Technomic Deluxe and a 120mm Pearl for initial
fit, and I liked the little bit of extra reach the Pearl gives me. A Nitto
Pearl stem sunk all the way down in my Hunqapillar's short head tube still
puts these bars about 8 cm's above my saddle.

For some reason, Nitto measures the Pearl differently than the
Technomic Deluxe and the Pearl is about 8-9mm longer. Why? I don't know.

So if I decide later I need to raise these bars a bit higher, I think
I'm going to need that one extra centimeter of the 130mm Technomic Deluxe.

 Hi Johnny,
Most handlebars Crust sells are 26mm or 31.8mm, maybe that's why?
Could strength be a factor? Fingers crossed Crust starts to stock some
 120-130mm stems for these bars.

I think the demand for these bars caught Crust & Uncle Ron completely
off guard. Back in February 2021, when I emailed Uncle Ron with questions
about a photo of what looked like giant, mutant Albatross bars on his
Atlantis(?), he answered, "congrats on being the only person
interested in my ortho back bars lol. it's a state of mind... "

But then Crust put up those Uncle Ron's Orthopedic Back Bars
Sesion#1-#3 ride videos up on Youtube, and Uncle Ron posted Instagram
photos, and they created a monster.

Re: [RBW] Bar end vs Downtube

2021-12-29 Thread Brian McDermott
Downtube shifters are fine, but the main drawback as others have said is
the reach. Definitely great if you're frequently changing out your cockpit.

However, you just can't beat the accessibility of bar end shifters,
especially if your bike is loaded. As for front end clutter, I'm a fan of
running the cables all the way up under the tape so they exit by the stem,
like your brake cables.

Years back I bought a used Rambouillet that came to me with down tube
shifters. I rode it that way for a while just to see what I thought of
 them
after at least a decade since the last time I used them.

I can’t say they were horrible but I much prefer bar mounted shifters
since they make shifting easier and safer. I do like the look and the ease
of setup of down tube shifters but the ergonomics are lacking for me. I
 ride a 58-60 cm frame.

I am debating bar end vs down tube shifters for the upcoming homer
build. I like the simplicity and aesthetics of down tube but concerned how
“inconvenient “ they could be given longish geometry of rivs. For non
racing and just riding for pleasure usecases does it matter .I am also
considering going downtube for FD and bar end for RD. If over time I find
downtube comfortable enough switch both to downtube . Would love to hear
 groups thoughts and experience.
