Keith - such great composition on that shot! I love the idea of doing a
"while riding camera" thread too. I use a Ricoh GR II that works great for
me.

gorgeous crankset in person. There's some rubbing on the rear of the
driveside crank that caused some small scratches, but it is essentially
brand new as I mounted it, tried to make it work for my bike and then
realized it wasn't going to. 200 retail, looking for *160$ shipped.*

[RBW] FS: Ultradynamico 700x42 Cava Race, Brooks Flyer "All Terrain", Pletscher Kickstand

2023-12-17 Thread Bryan Dalik
Hi All,

Selling a few things:

Ultradynamico Cava Race - 700x42 - Great tires with tons of life left.
Ridden a few hundred miles. Blew out the back tire, but it was filled with
sealant. Probably fine to ride tubeless, definitely fine to ride with
tubes. Discounting pretty heavily due to the flatting, but I'm sure they're
totally fine. *90$ shipped.*

Brooks "All Terrain" Conquest Saddle - Think this is an older version of a
Flyer I believe. Sprung saddle with some marks of usage and wear. In good
condition, I recently hit it with a fresh coat of Brooks proofide. *70$
shipped.*

Plestcher kickstand - Single leg kickstand pulled off a Clem Smith. In good
shape. *15$ shipped.*

It had some squeak to it but I changed the seatpost and it seemed fine? I'm
not entirely sure, I switched it out for a B17 just because I love them so
much and found one cheap. I'd work on price with you if you wanted it.

[RBW] FS: Brooks All Terrain saddle, Technomic 50cm stem, Carradice saddlebag

2023-11-15 Thread Bryan Dalik
Hi All,

Selling the following:

Brooks All Terrain Sprung saddle - In good shape, a couple of nicks in the
leather but I conditioned it with Brooks proofide and it's super comfy,
just not for me. *90$ shipped*

Carradice saddle bag - It's in rough shape, but still perfectly useable.
This one would need some new straps (can use Voile) for attaching to bike.
Has a piece of coroplast in there for structure. *30$ shipped*

Nitto technomic 50mm stem - Really good shape, this would be great on your
drop bar bike for a very comfortable ride. 26.0 clamp. *35$ shipped*

*LINK TO PHOTOS*

Thanks!

Looking for this in black if possible, or something comparable if anyone
has one they're looking to off load.

Thanks!

[RBW] FS: Nitto Noodle 54cm, Nitto Technomic 70mm, Silver Chainguard

2023-03-08 Thread Bryan Dalik
Hi all,

Have some excellent condition parts for sale that didn't work out for my
build.

120$ - 54cm Nitto Noodle Drop Handlebars - Brand new. Riv is sold out so
I'm pretty sure they're unavailable from anywhere else. I literally mounted
them and took them around the block before decided they're too wide for me.
Some scuffing from mounting onto the stem, but brand new and in packaging.

50$ - 70cm Nitto Techonmic Stem - 25.4 clamp - ended up needing a 26.0,
this is also brand new and in original packaging.

30$ - 38t Silver Chainring guard - I ended up going with a 42t instead so
this is available and in great shape. Some light use on it. Will work with
a 36 or 38t outer chainring.

Feel free to contact me. Will cut a deal for a bundle. Thanks!

Bryan

[RBW] Re: Atlantis Old vs New?

2023-02-27 Thread Bryan Dalik
I just picked up a late 2000's Toyo Atlantis and I've ridden some of the
longer chainstay more modern Rivendell frames. The biggest difference I
think would be the chainstays for sure. The ride quality will be in my
opinion vastly different, as the older Riv's had shorter (still longer for
the time) chainstays keeping the bike a bit more nimble and quick as
opposed to being super stable albeit a bit more "clumsy". An Atlantis 2
with 26" wheels has plenty of possibilities. I'm sure you can clear real
big tires if you wanted to, or go a more traditional tire with fenders and
whatnot.

That is a wonderful, wonderful Toyo Atlantis. What size tires? Looking to
see what max is. I got myself a custom orange Toyo Atlantis in a 58 as well
and being 6'2'' with a 89 PBH, I'm happy to hear it fits so well for you.

Hi all,

Got a pair of Albastache bars I pulled off of a Riv I am rebuilding. I
cleaned them up pretty good. They're in really nice shape with a few minor
scuffs and marks. These are 25.4 clamp diameter. and are heat treated.

Thinking 85$ shipped.

For anyone that is interested, John Watson of the Radavist scooped up this
frame super quick (within a few minutes). I sent him a message as he is
building it up - it's going to get decked out in some very nice retro parts
as probably a trail centric build. Looking forward to seeing it done.

[RBW] FS: Paul Long Pull Levers & Nitto 65 Seatpost

2022-12-10 Thread 'Bryan Dalik' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi All,

Building up a new Riv and I am parting with some things that won't work for
it.

Paul Love Levers - Long Pull brake levers in great shape minus some typical
wear and some scratches. 155$ Shipped to US

Nitto 65 - 27.2 mm seatpost in great shape, single bolt design. 250mm
length. Again, some typical wear and scratches but otherwise perfect. 65$
Shipped to the US
Any questions, by all means.

Thanks!

[RBW] FT: 2019 Atlantis frame and fork 59cm

2021-11-09 Thread Bryan Quinn
I’m interested in trading my 2019 Atlantis Frame and fork, size 59cm, for a
Hunq frame/fork in the 55-57cm size range. Any takers?

Re: [RBW] The joy of winter riding, and how do you keep your toes warm?

2021-03-01 Thread 'Bryan Midlam' via RBW Owners Bunch
I ride regularly throughout our Northeast Winters and always struggled to
keep hands and feet warm. This year I finally figured it out although the
set up isn't ideal for the beauty of riding a Riv but it works for staying
warm. I wear Pearly's Possum Socks under waterproof boots (I could never
get warm riding clipless so I now only ride flats). I then use neoprene
shoe covers. Mine are now worn out so I am due for a new pair. For the
hands I ride in Showers Pass waterproof wool gloves, they are very light
and make it so you can still easily operate the controls. Then I have a
pair of Bar Mitts for my handlebars. Again, not winning any style contests
here but if anything, my hands were too warm and I had to vent them. I
have heavier gloves that work as well but it's so hard to have the same
ride feel with huge mittens on.

[RBW] 59cm Atlantis (current model)

2020-06-15 Thread Bryan Quinn
Hello- I’m wondering if anyone on this list would be kind enough to point me in
a direction where I can find the current standover height for the 59cm
Atlantis. The table provided by Rivendell seems to leave it blank, at least the
ones I have seen. I do realize there is some variation based on tire size so
there is no perfect answer, just trying to get close. I’ve been able to use a
website called “bike insights” to compare a 59cm 2019 Atlantis with my current
non-Rivendell bike, but I’m not sure how accurate it is. Thank you!

2020-06-15 Thread Bryan Quinn
Thanks for all these details you provided about your new Atlantis. How do you
find the standover height for you? I just bought the 59cm and expect it
sometime in the next few weeks. This will be my first Rivendell. I’m curious
because my PBH is a shoeless 87.5 and I’m hoping I made the right call. I’ve
got a longer torso than most and was on the edge between the 55 and the 59.

[RBW] Re: Advice Needed: Tires

2020-01-22 Thread Bryan Kim
With the understanding that the quality of "suppleness" can be somewhat
personal/subjective, I personally like the ride quality of my Panaracer
Pasela PT tires, especially for a bike you intend to use from time to time.
FWIW, I live in the DMV and run the Paselas on my Bridgestone MB-2 for
rides around the city, on the Capital Crescent Trail, and even on the C
towpath - have not flatted yet and the ride quality has been more than
sufficient for all three situations. As a bonus, the cost is relatively low
for these tires.

[RBW] Re: Tuning SunRace Thumbies

2016-02-23 Thread Bryan Pizzillo
Hi all,
First, thank you all for your ideas and feedback, the Clem is now
shifting/holding gear a *lot* better and any issues with getting to a gear
are my own now. For posterity's sake in case some one does a search in the
future, I just wanted to follow up with what I ended up doing.

To answer some questions,

   - the Clem is the complete-build medium, 52cm.
   - The trouble gears were pretty much in all cogs except for the big and
the small, and using the big or small chainring had similar issues. I do
feel like it might have occurred more around the apex of the shifter arc.
Lets say if the big cog is 1 and the little cog is 8, then it was 6,5 and
   4. I don't usually use anything less than 4.
   - Also to note, the issues were not so much on shifting, but riding in a
gear for a good ways and then all of a sudden it would skip without
warning, usually under load like a hill. Also it did not skip right when
the load increased, oh no, it let me think everything was going to be ok on
this hill. Then bam, a skip and then a fair amount of teeth gnashing and
cursing. Also, the skip did not feel like when you are between two gears,
but as if there was no resistance like when have no chain.

Anyway, here is what I did:

   1. Checked to make sure the cassette was tight. It was, and I have a
new cassette removal tool to boot. It was tight...
   2. Put the bike on the stand and tuned it to shift on the clicks like it
   was indexed.
  1. Rode it for a number of commutes (around 7mi each way) and a
separate 10mi ride. It was better - at least getting it into gear was
not
as fiddly. Alas, it was easier to get in gear, and held the gears more
often, but would still skip randomly. Usually only when I was feeling
very confident that it would *not* skip because things were going well.
   3. Finally, I checked out Bill's SunRace pictures and noted the Ultegra
bar ends would fit. (Thanks Bill!) I did not know if my issue was me not
liking friction shifting in general or just the SunRace, do I did not want
to risk the friction-only Silver shifters.

So now I am running the "front" (left side) Ultegra bar end shifter on the
"rear" (right side) SunRace shifter in friction-mode. Now any issues with
shifting seem to be mine alone. I do get the occasional "slip" but it is
that one where it is jumping between two gears, and it still give some
resistance when it happens so it is not as jarring. Once again though,
this highlights my inability to get to the gear correctly the first time
and a quick trim fixes it. I am even being bold and shifting on uphills,
downshifting and upshifting even. In the other long thread on the Clem
(Clemming Around) there has been some discussion if it is the Altus/SunRace
combo that is the issue. Who knows, but the Ultegra seems to be smoother
shifting and does not have the issues. On the plus side, reusing the SR
shifter bases saved $60-70 on a pair of Paul Thumbies.

Thanks again for the help.

- Bryan

Try mounting it on the braze ons higher up on the seat stays. Those are
actually M6 as well. That is where I mounted a Nitto Mt Campee, albeit I
had to mount it to the inside, but it was no biggie. I also found when
attempting to use M5 bolts and jury rigging on the dropouts that the
hardware would have interfered with the chain/cassette. Anyway, everything
is good on the higher ups.

[RBW] Tuning SunRace Thumbies

2016-01-06 Thread Bryan Pizzillo
Hi all,

I was lucky enough to get one of the complete Clems and have been able to
put about 250mi on it so far. Around the middle of December I had a couple
of experiences where the chain seemed to slip when peddling and under load.
This is my first friction shifting bike, so I thought it was me. For the
past couple of weeks though, this has become more frequent and has been
requiring less of a "load." By load, it is almost always on a small
incline, but I have had it happen while spinning in an easy gear as well.
The most frustrating aspect is that it is (almost) never right after I
have shifted, but usually a good 2-3 min after a shift. You know, just
enough that I think it is ok and then bam, I am peddling with no
resistance. Needless to say this is coloring my flirtation with friction
shifting and am thinking about going to an indexed 1x11.

I did do some searching and found similar issues, but not similar reasons
(old cassettes and chains), I have:

   1. Checked to see if there is a stuck link. I back pedaled for a while,
looking at the derailer and chain and I did not see anything resembling a
stuck link. Then again, I am not a (good) mechanic...
   2. Wiped down the chain, cleaned it, reapplied lube... (in hopes that if
it was a stuck link or something it would get relubricated)
   3. NOT dropped the bike or wrecked it on anything. The derailer looks
pretty straight and does not look bent.

Also, to make things slightly more annoying, I cannot get it to skip when
on the bike stand. I can get it to jump between chains if I do not shift
it correctly, but I can't get it to hop off once engaged. With index
shifting, it is usually easy to figure out what I need to do. It either
gets into gear, or it does not and then I can adjust accordingly. With
friction it feels like it probably does not matter much since you move the
shifter to get it to the right spot. With the SunRace though, there is the
ratchet mechanism and I wonder if it not allowing the shifter to stay in
the position to hold the gear, but instead pulling ever so slightly to get
into its, um, "naturally ratcheted position?" Any suggestions would be
appreciated, also any information on how I should set the derailer barrel
adjuster and how to set the limits for friction shifting would appreciated.
I looked at things like Sheldon's page, but it seems a lot more geared to
index shifting with an aside here or there on friction shifting.

Thanks,
Bryan

Re: [RBW] Re: Curious: saddle bags versus panniers?

2015-05-27 Thread Bryan
I was a panniers guy for years. I hesitated for a long time before buying a
Saddlesack because I was afraid of the convenience issue, and I didn't want
to leave an expensive bag on the bike when commuting. In reality, it takes
me about an extra 5 seconds to attach/detach my large Saddlesack than it
does a pair of panniers, so I think the convenience issue is a bit
overstated. It turns out that two leather buckles and a bungee ball for the
underside is all the quick release that I need. As for visibility, the
reflective strip is super bright, and there's a nice place to hang your
blinky light. Great bag!!!

I also don't like that locked-in feel. I haven't tried the Grip Kings, but

[RBW] Re: Where do you find the time?

2014-02-22 Thread Bryan
Great post! I'm married with five kids and a busy job, so I can certainly
sympathize! Sometimes I read those ride reports and look at photos that
people post and I get frustrated that I can't be out there more. But then I
remind myself how lucky I am to be able to commute to work everyday on my
bike. I'm out there on my Rivendell over an hour a day, five days a week,
and I bet there are people who post photos of themselves on their bikes in
amazing places that would be envious of that.

Short rides around the neighborhood can be lovely as well. So are bike
trailers for when the kids are little. I'm slowly coming to the realization
that the kids grow up really fast and that precious weekend time is better
spent with them (on bikes or not) than off on some 5-hour epic mixed
terrain ride. I've always had a strong wanderlust, so it's not easy
sometimes, but I'm trying my best to keep things balanced.

Patrick - It's nice to hear about your relationship with the Sabbath. I
keep the Jewish Sabbath, and while that causes me to miss many a Saturday
So Cal Riv ride, I'm all the richer for it.

Re: [RBW] How cold was your first day ride?

It was in the high 40s in LA when I headed up to Franklin Canyon this
morning on the QB. Switched to 32/19 at Coldwater Canyon Park and rode up
the hill, goofed around in the dirt a little and then came back home. I was
in full Riv kit - MUSA knickers, wool t-shirt, chambray button-down and
wool gloves. Perfect for most of the ride, but then a bit too warm towards
the end as the sun gained strength. It was close to 60 by the time I got
home, headed for a high in the mid-70s once again. It's been so warm and
sunny in So Cal lately. I feel guilty.

The desert in Southern California can get pretty cold at night. Much of

much warmer at night, but it's hard to find peace and quiet in coastal So

Hi, Hugh

For hanging out around the campsite, down is the way to go. I have a North
Face down jacket that I wear with a couple of layers of wool underneath on
chilly winter boy scout camping trips in the So Cal mountains. For cycling,
though, down is totally overkill. Back in my Wisconsin days, two or three
layers with a windbreaker on top was all I needed down to about 0F. As
stated above, the key for staying warm while riding is keeping your head,
hands and feet warm and breaking the wind.

[RBW] So Cal Riders - CicLAvia this Sunday?

2013-10-01 Thread Bryan
Hi, folks

Does anyone want to ride CicLAvia this Sunday? Information about the ride
is here: http://www.ciclavia.org/events/683/heart-of-la/693/about.

The ride is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. It's too chaotic at these
events to find anyone mid-ride, so I was thinking we could meet at one of
the Hubs early in the day and ride together. I'm partial to the MacArthur
Park hub because I'm planning on riding from home and that's the closest
one. How about a 9:30 a.m. meet-up at the corner of 7th and Alvarado and a
roll-out at 10:00 a.m.? I'm also open to meeting earlier - I'm going to
have to head home around 2:00 for family stuff later in the day.

I hope some of us can ride together!

[RBW] Re: Too small MB-3, need help with Dirt Drop, bar rec's

2013-09-24 Thread Bryan
Hi, Tim

I'm about the same size as you. I ride a 60cm Hillborne and a 64cm
Quickbeam, which both fit great. I had a 21 late-'80s Stumpjumper for a
while, but ultimately it was just too small for comfortable 'round-town
riding. Then I found virtually the same bike in a 23 size, and that's
worked out very well for my needs (bad weather/dark winter night
commuting/hauling kids in a trailer). Alba bars work perfectly with the
stock stem. There aren't a whole lot of 23 old MTBs out there, but it's
worth it to find the right size if old MTBs are your thing. I still
wouldn't want to spend more than a couple of hours on it, but it's fun for
short rides.

Good luck!

Re: [RBW] Re: Now taking a poll for the month of September SoCal Riv Ride Santa Monica

2013-09-16 Thread Bryan
Not sure about the parking situation. I ride to that area from my house
(I'm spoiled). If you're going up Westridge, another option would be to
meet at Peet's at the corner of San Vicente and Gorham in Brentwood. That's
all City of LA street parking around there and might be more forgiving than
Santa Monica. Then you'd ride San Vicente a few blocks west to Burlingame,
to a short descent down Sunset Blvd. to Mandeville Canyon and then up
Westridge. Gets you into the nice stuff pretty quickly. Coming back to your
cars up San Vicente from the PCH is good because there's a great bike lane
on San Vicente.

Hugh,

Funny - I spent the summer of 1990 in Delta Junction, AK, working on an

leave my consciousness, either. The place really makes an impression.

I remember seeing a guy that summer travelling through on a bicycle bound

I'd just go with the Betty with some Albas. From what I understand, those

will allow her to sit up and rotate everything back which will help with

Re: [RBW] Re: Interesting discussion: Riv bikes v. BQ bikes

2013-05-08 Thread Bryan
I've never given this whole debate much thought. I like Rivendell bikes
because when I manage to squeeze two or three hours out of my busy schedule
on a weekend for a ride in the local mountains, I want to ride a road
bike that will take me anywhere, including rocky trails if the notion
grabs me. I hardly ever ride with other people, so speed is irrelevant. For
commuting, I've been doing the rear load thing for at least 20 years (I
still use my early '90s Overland panniers every day!), so the idea of a
front load bike doesn't do much for me, although it seems that people carry
front loads on Rivs and they seem to work fine for that, too.

I like them, too. I'm hooked on Noodles because of all the available hand
positions, but the immediate brake access on the m-bars can't be beat for a
hectic commute. I originally bought them for commuting in cold weather. You
can wear big mittens on them and still negotiate the brakes levers -
something that's too clumsy for drop bars. I have a pair sitting bike-less
in my garage. One of these days, I'll give them another try.
