[RBW] Re: Frame schedule 2021

2021-02-04 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Mark it’s really not worth my effort but my FULL NAME appears next to my
dog avatar. Can you not see it? I can see it and I can read your full
name next to your non-photo blue blob head avatar. Other than slapping my
knuckles on not doing a search, I’m confused why you had to do a Google
search to investigate who I am. I have very good manners but don’t feel as
though I need to have my full name on posts at the top AND then also add
the name Chris again at the bottom. All I can guess is whatever format
you are viewing doesn’t display it and you are saying I don’t have a name.
Please move on from being concerned about my full name and whether or not
I’m a man. Check around, there are a lot of female Chris’ out there.

[RBW] Re: I'm ready

2021-02-04 Thread Chris Birkenmaier

For my “go fast” Riv, I find the Albastache to work really well which is on
my Roadini. My Sam has the Bullmoose, the Mountain Mixte has the VO
Klunker, the Cheviot has the Jones bar and the Quickbeam is an Ahearne.
Soma San Marcos has the Albatross. All good bars but the Albastache seems
the sportiest of the group

[RBW] Re: On the subject of VO Bars

2021-02-02 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
I have the VO Klunker bars on my Roscoe Bubbe mountain Mixte. Had it in
to my local REI and one of the bike mechanics was from the Bay Area and was
thrilled to see the bike. (I’m in PA). He was saying how he never sees
them out east but saw them frequently in Berkeley where he had worked at a
shop.
As to the bars themselves, I really like them. I have Ergo grips so it’s a
very comfy set up

Sam, the MBs were 90s mtbs, more similar to an Atlantis than a Susie.
The Susie has a much more upright position, and a radically longer top
 tube
(70cm on the XL, with a 59cm seat tube.) The design of early mountain
bikes, and most race designed bikes regardless of generation, is to spread
your center of gravity more evenly between the hbars and seat in order to
reduce drag. None of these principles apply to the Susie, which is
 designed
to have most of the weight on the saddle, further back and over the rear
stays, for the purpose of comfort.

How is the acceleration? I am looking for something for 50% single
 track

 ride a
rigid MTB currently so the lack of front suspension won't be a shock

 to
ride with swept back bars on technical single track?

Thanks a lot for the thoughts!!

up the size of the post so that it would fit. I emailed Riv to let them know

[RBW] Re: New bike woes - Albatross bars and Brooks B17 Special saddle

2019-05-09 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
I think we can all agree that everyone is different and therefore saddles
vary as to suitability. I have B17s and B68s on my various bikes and all
are set up with alt bars and pretty upright riding position. I'm perfectly
fine with the B17 in that usage.. For the most part I don't have that
painful period for breaking in unless I go longer miles on an outing. Also
agreed - for me - the Cambium is too rounded and makes for a very
uncomfortable saddle. I also enjoy the Berthoud Mente and the newer
Albruis which both have the flat back portion. For my folders I use the
WTB Sports Comfort saddle and have had good results.

Thanks for the info on the Aubisque! I wasn't aware of that model. My
research shows its the same proportions as the Mente and the leather
attachments seem to be like the upscale Vars. Kind of a middle price
between the two. Trying to find a US seller is not easy.

[RBW] Re: Berthoud Saddles

2019-04-10 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Just have to chime in since there isn't normally a lot of chatter around
Berthoud saddles. As much as I adore Brooks, the Mente is one of my all
time favorites. I have alt bars on all my bikes except for the Roadini
which has Albaastache and the Mente works very well for me. I like the
long nose and sleek profile from the side. Quality abounds on these
saddles. I've noticed the Mente is getting harder to find available. Not
sure if they are phasing it out?

[RBW] Re: Buy a Clem (from Rivendel) and get a $750 store credit(!)

2019-03-18 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
I'm curious as to how they made out on the weekend sales blitz. If anyone
wanted a Clem, that appeal surely should have shook them out of the
woodwork. As much as I'd love to help Riv, I just don't need a Clem which
would be my 8th bike made by the company. I do wish them nothing but the
best to overcome this latest cash crunch.

Been meaning to post to this discussion for quite some time. I have Albastache
bars on mine and really like them a lot. This has become my “go fast” bike.
It puts me in a more athletic position than my other bikes and that coupled
with the relatively light weight of the bike makes for a very agreeable ride.

I have one on my Sam Hillborne and I really like it. I don't do crazy
miles on it but that's just because I don't do crazy miles to begin with.
I find it exceptionally comfortable and agree with the comment that if it
is a good fit for you, then you probably don't need a dozen different hand
positions. Even at that, you can move your hands forward on the bar if you
wanted to.

[RBW] Re: Joe Appaloosa, MIT Atlantis versus Jones SWB

2018-07-17 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Jonathan, I am a big fan of the Ti bikes I own (Seven, Blacksheep and the
Jones). In all of these bikes I feel a smoothness when I ride that isn't
always present in others. I certainly like steel and have never owned a
carbon fiber, so that is my universe of experience in frame materials. I
think the Jones is well proportioned to me in reach and general set up so
that helps too. Just a combination of a lot of different factors that come
together in this particular bike that makes it a real treat for me to
ride. Sorry if that all sounds very vague.

I have a Joe A and the older version of the Jones diamond Ti frame with the
truss fork - so not the LWB.. Although I love both of these bikes, the
Jones is a superlative ride. I have the "smaller" slick tires (2.5?)
Schwable Marathon Supreme and Alfine 8 drivetrain on the Jones. Talking to
Jeff Jones is also a treat. He takes the time to answer all your
questions. Not that Riv doesn't. It's one of my keepers.

My story unfolded much like yours. Drop bars are something I don’t intend to

If you see something that interests you feel free to make an offer. I also

I don't ride drops so I've become the queen of Alt Bars it seems. I've
tried all that you mentioned and just recently put the Jones H-bar on my
Cheviot. This Jones bar is the "simple one" that doesn't have the extended
loop on it - so it looks like the MAP bars that I happen to have on my QB.
I also prefer the slightly more aggressive position. Still comfortable but
not sitting like Mary Poppins.

I have the hammered Honjos on my Cheviot. Don’t do much off-roading but the
pieces of grit and small pebbles from the road ping all over the metal. Frankly
I find it annoying

[RBW] Re: Anyone have a spare Rivendell mug they're willing to part with?

2018-03-22 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
I looked to order a mug two days ago and searched all over the site and
couldn’t find it. Was afraid they may have stopped selling them because the
item disappeared without a photo remaining and an “out of stock” notation. I
almost bought one when I was ordering a bunch of stuff during the crunch a
couple of weeks ago.

[RBW] Re: Custom frames sold out

2018-02-26 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
I would think a comment to call Riv directly might work better than a "sold
out" notation. Custom builders that I have seen often have a place to put
in a deposit online and then a follow up with the builder for specific
specs. Just struck me as odd but perhaps it is not.

[RBW] Custom frames sold out

2018-02-26 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
Been visiting the Riv website often with the recent shopping initiative and
noticed that custom frames are listed as sold out. Saw this a few days back so
it’s not new. Any reason why a custom could not be ordered via the site or am I
missing something? As an aside I wasn’t looking to order a custom - simply
noticed it

2018-02-24 Thread Chris Birkenmaier
I love the nonpolitical nature of this forum and don’t want to see that
changed. The slap on older people was just kind of inane. Perhaps it was
offered by someone who doesn’t think he or she is ever going to age. (And some
people don’t eat and sleep at exact times)

Guess you can put me in the pile of people who thought the thread was going to
discuss unsafe helmets
