Re: [RBW] Best Rivendell for pavement riding

2024-03-05 Thread Damien
I had a Sam up until recently but sold it and have very recently replaced
with a Ram which I've yet to get out on (am going to swap out the Albatross
currently on them for drop bars). Not sure what size you're looking at, but
the thing for me was I wanted a 700c bike, and the Sam that fit me (51) was
650b. I had a Roadini in size 50 which was great, but ended up selling that
and keeping the Sam as it better met my needs at the time (dragging kids
around, carrying random stuff, more mixed terrain stuff). Sam is great, but
didn't feel as quick (subjective) and was definitely more sluggish in its
handling on road - felt a bit like overkill tbh. I attribute most of that
to set up and the chunky tire size I was using on the Sam (650b x 48 on Sam
vs. 700 x 32 on Roadini). I would say if you go with the Sam for your use,
42 would be the ideal tire size (as someone mentioned earlier!).

I can't wait to get out on the Ram to see how I like it, but if it's
anything like the Roadini, I feel I'll be on a setup that makes sense for
the type of riding that I do - which seems similar to the type of riding
you'll be doing! Hope that is in some way helpful!

Hi all,

Pretty big price drop on this. Looking to get $1100 CAD net to me.
Considering how favourable the US dollar is to the CAD I hope this is more
compelling for the group.

Thanks!

2023-03-13 Thread Damien
Hi all,

I know this has been sitting there for a bit but thought I'd try and bring
it back up to the top. Any interest in this at *$1,000 USD*? I'm happy to
throw on the original 3TTT bars/stem if you so desire as well. Anyways, let
me know if any questions or interest. My 5 month old's diapers are getting
expensive!

Thanks,
Damien

 The Rundown:

- 58cm Rivendell Rambouillet Frame/Fork
- Mavic Open Pro Rims on Ultegra 6500 Hubs (32h) (12-26
cassette)
- Ultegra 6500 Deraillures with 3x8 Bar End Shifters
- Sugino XD Triple Crank 48-38-26
- Panaracer Pasela 35c folding bead tires with maybe 50-60
miles.
- TRP RRL Brake Levers
- Soma Highway One bars (42cm)*BUT I also have some Nitto
Noodle bars in 42cm. take your pick!*
- Nitto Cold forged 7cm stem (Tallux? It's pretty tall) *BUT
I also have the same model in 10-11cm. take your pick!*
- I'll also toss in an 8 speed 11-32 cassette and derailleur
hanger extender. I ran that for a while and while shifting was not
 quite as
awesome, having a 26 x 32 gear was nice.
- Oh, there is also a set of beat up SKS fenders that I will
include.

$1,600. + actual shipping cost. I'd, of course, prefer a local
sale, but I can ship to a loving home.

2023-02-02 Thread Damien
Thanks for the replies everyone. As an FYI, I'm a bit of a smaller guy, but
bought these because I enjoyed my Albatross bars with the only knock on
them being that they were too narrow and I felt cramped with them even with
a 120mm stem. My hope was that these bars would give some of the benefits I
enjoyed with the Albatrossbut wider.

Hi! I'm curious if anyone has experience with these bars? I was able to
track down a pair and I pulled the trigger on them without any real thought
and had immediate buyers remorse. That said, I'd still love to hear others
thoughts on them before I go down the dark path of buying parts to switch
out my drop bars. How do they ride? Are they too wide? How did you set them
up (i.e., stem length, etc.)? Recommend?

Thanks all!

[RBW] Re: Your Road or Road-ish Riv Rubber Radius (tire width)

2022-08-09 Thread Damien
Hey Eric, I'm on a 51 Sam (650b) so keep that in mind as I run through my
experience. I started with 42 Paselas and those felt good on long road
rides, then moved to 43 rock 'n' roads for some more bite on trails. I
wanted to go bigger yet as I was riding more on gravel and trails so I now
have 48 gravel king slicks. I like the tread on the gravel kings, but as I
find myself riding road more I'm finding the ride is a little bit bouncy,
sluggish and heavy on the road at that size, and I find the handling a bit
funny. As you're on a larger Sam, your experience might be different, but I
feel that on my Sam in that size, 42 in 650b felt to be just about right
for road and I'm planning on moving to Rene Herse Babyshoe Pass tires at
some point, or even back to the Paselas.

Hope that's helpful (even though I can't speak to the brevet side of your
question)

BTW, your Sam is lovely and the Snoqualmie Pass' look just about perfectly
proportioned on it

Re: [RBW] Flat Pedal Users: Favorite size/shape?

2022-03-16 Thread Damien
I have been using Blackspire Sub Four pedals on my Bombora, and SimWorks
Bubbly Pedals on my Sam. Both are pretty great and I'd recommend. The
Blackspire pedals are super grippy - almost too grippy? Whatever, I
don't hate it and they do feel really nice when ripping around on trails.
The SimWorks pedals are just really pretty (got them in Copper). Not as
grippy but honestly a good amount of grip for my purposes with the Sam, and
a nice platform. Look a bit chunky, but I'm over it and actually enjoy the
way they look.

https://www.sim.works/products/bubbly-pedals?variant=37871655911598

https://www.blackspire.com/product/sub-four-pedals/

I had MKS Lambdas before - they're ok. They have a nice platform but my
Vans/Chucks would slip a bit on them. Not sure if you can put pins in them,
but you may not need/want them. For what it's worth, my wife absolutely
hates these pedals. I think it's because she has shinned herself more with
these pedals than any others.

I have another bike coming and I may try some composite pedals - Kona Wah
Wahs or something like that.

[RBW] Re: Which swept back bars for a Hillborne?

2022-02-14 Thread Damien
I actually went the other way, converting from Albatross to Noodles. With
the Albas, I had a 12cm stem and bar end shifters (although I think
thumbies would be better). They felt very upright for me - hence the move
to Noodles - but I can't figure out whether I just didn't take to the
sweepback of the Albas, or I was just used to drops. The Noodle setup is
using 48cm noodles with a 7cm stem, although sometimes I wish it were 5cm
or 6cm (or I just had compact bars). I'm going to try some SimWorks Fun 3s
or Nitto Wavies with a 135 faceplater to see if that changes my mind on
non-drop bars for this bike.

took a 40 day vacation with bikes. I ride a Gus and my friend, Tim, a
Susie. Check out the video above for a recap of events in sequential
 order.

The original idea was a skate trip by bicycles but with mediocre at
best planning. We would ride from Seattle to Oakland finding as much dirt
 and gravel as possible.
We left Chicago by car on July 3rd with my wife, 2 dogs, 2 bikes and
plenty of camping equipment. We dropped my bike off in Seattle to get the
front hub replaced and drove up to Orcas Island for some camping and
skating. After 10 days of driving my wife dropped Tim & I in Seattle to
begin the biking portion. Yes, my wife dropped us in Seattle and drover
herself and the 2 dogs back to Chicago by herself. She is the best and
 has
already let me know she will not be doing that again anytime soon.
Free Range Cycles in Seattle was the starting point for the biking
portion because that is where my bike was. We had a late start and ended
up skating under the bridge, Marginal Way, until dark with the Grindline
crew. A guy named Isaac gave us a place to crash on the flat bottom of
there indoor vert ramp. He also gave us a great route to hit skateparks
 along the way towards Yakima.

We zigzagged through Washington hitting skateparks along the way. If
you didn't know already the Seattle area has the most skateparks per
capita. The route was not straight forward but the trip was not meant to
be. We rode towards Yakima and hung for a day before making our way
 towards Bingen, WA.
After skating Bingen Park for a full day we hitchhiked across the
Columbia River to get into Hood River, Oregon. From Hood River we rode to
Portland and instead of staying in Portland for 3 days we stayed for 14.
After about 8 days our friend finally asked how long we would be sleeping
on his floor. We originally thought we would ride the Oregon Outback but
due to heavy fires thought best to just stay and skate Burnside everyday
and do some s24o in the Portland area. (We plan on going back and doing
 the
Outback in the early spring time). We both were not interested in biking
the 1 and used a Hertz bailout to rent a van and drive the 1 with our
 bikes
to Oakland. Saving our legs for lots of day rides and skating through the
 Oakland area.
We stayed in Oakland for about 10 days and skated every single day
expect one when we decided to take BART to walnut creek and ride Mt.
Diablo. After sleeping outside on the Mountain we checked out Riv and
 took
BART back to our friends place in Oakland.
After a good time in Oakland we took the Amtrak back to Chicago on
 August 12th.
The big take away... Bring your bike to each town you visit so you can
go where you want when you want. Sometimes, listen to locals. Lastly,
carrying a skateboard while touring adds a lot of extra weight but totally
worth it if you are still a 30+ year old skate rat.

I had Albas on the Sam and switched over to 48 Noodles. For that bike the
Noodles feel right, but I think it's because I'm so used to drops. That
said, I've always been a bit Choco-curious, and am fascinated by the
proposition of a Wavie on the Sam...

Re: [RBW] Re: Have you ever considered trading in your Sam for an Appaloosa?

2021-07-13 Thread Damien
Just an update here. I decided to stick with the Hillborne since I had so
many great rides on it the past few weeks and knew I would regret selling
it.
..nd someone else nabbed the Appaloosa - looks like the decision
was made for me!

I may consider going back to upright bars at some point in the distant
future, but may try some that aren't Albatross. I would consider a Wavie or
Bullmoose since they don't seem to sweep back as much and the angle seems
nicer. I also have some SimWorks Fun 3 bars collecting dust in the parts
bin that might end up on there one day, but for now, the drops will be just
fine!

As far as swapping the Hillborne for an Appaloosa, I looked at both and

 to the Atlantis.

 Enjoy your Sam Hillborne.

[RBW] Re: Have you ever considered trading in your Sam for an Appaloosa?

2021-06-30 Thread Damien
Think I see what most people are saying, and a few things have stuck out to
me:

   - Both bikes are good, but having both of them would be better to cover
off all sorts of riding (Sam for more roadish endeavours, Appa for more
   load/trails/wider usage)
   - A bigger difference-maker is how each bike would be set up, but it
wouldn't make sense to set up my Sam to be what I'd want an Appa to be, and
   vice versa
   - There is a difference between the new Appa and old one, as the new one
may be better suited to more upright bars

To answer a question above, the longest stem I have used with the Albas was
120, but at some point, a super long stem begins to feel a bit goofy

Super appreciative for all of the insights, knowledge and thoughts dropped
here! Please keep them coming. The bike in consideration is one of the
just-released orange Appaloosas, so would have the new geometry, and I
would likely just transition parts over from the Sam and sell the frame.

[RBW] Have you ever considered trading in your Sam for an Appaloosa?

2021-06-28 Thread Damien
So here's the situation. I've got a super hot lead on an orange 51
Appaloosa, but I'm already deep in it with a sage 51 canti Sam. Initially,
when I was looking at these bikes, I was torn between the two. I ultimately
leaned Sam because at the time I liked the colour and it was more
available. Well, things change I guess! I'm more seriously entertaining a
move to the Appaloosa because:

   - Sweet long chainstays
   - Can carry more (?? Is this true??)
   - Will likely work better for me with upright bars (Sam felt too cramped
   for me with Albas)
   - Better tire clearance for fattish knubblies or fatter tires + fenderage

What I would love to do here is tap the forum's collective wisdom to see if
the grass is really greener. Has anyone made the move from Sam to
Appaloosa, or vice versa? What were your feelings? What did you miss on the
old bike when you made the move? What did you love about the new bike that
the old bike couldn't live up to?

I'm approaching this a bit more cautiously since I already regret selling
another Riv I owned (Roadini - my regret is well documented, I believe).
That said, I imagine I'll need to act fast to get the bike before someone
snags it. In a perfect world I'd keep both, but we all know the world isn't
perfect, and I do have to live within the very real constraints imposed
upon me by my lovely partner who for some reason isn't cool with me having
umpteen bikes.

Anyways, enough of my incessant rambling. Thank you for reading and helping
to encourage my hobby of buying bikes then selling then replacing then
modifying then selling then replacing then buying then crying then selling
then complaining then... (and so on and so forth).

Can anyone provide a clear, accurate summary of how the details of this

I know the seat tube sizes/designations are 1cm less, but did the top

 yet, get LONGER?

I know the fork blades got stiffer/thicker after the first run. Any
 other changes since.

 Has tire clearance improved?

Have chainstays gotten longer or shorter, etc?

Thanks for any geeky analysis or datapoints.

[RBW] Regrets

2021-05-20 Thread Damien
In my seemingly endless search to optimize my bike collection, fill gaps,
and try new and cool bikes, I recently realized how many bikes I've had in
my life and how many questionable decisions I've made. There are a number
of choices I've made, for better or worse, to sell bikes in order to make
room for other bikes, downsize, or simply because I felt they weren't
getting the use they deserved.

My question to the group is: what bike or bikes do you most regret selling,
trading, or giving away?

For me, as you may know, I absolutely regret selling my Roadini, and an old
Marinoni touring bike that I originally thought was too big for me (I
realize now how wrong I was, and am currently in the process of replacing
it!).

[RBW] Re: Wider Noodles

2021-05-10 Thread Damien
Knowing my tendencies, I imagine I'll be ordering those wide Noodles once
they exist. I currently have 48 Noodles on the Sam, and 52 Spank bars on
the Bombora - is this the best of both worlds?

Jay, I can also vouch for the Analog folk. I worked with James on a build

Re: [RBW] Re: In Praise of the Roadini

2021-01-29 Thread Damien
Ryan - YES! That truly makes me feel better about the decision to part with
it, difficult as it may have been! Please post some pics - so happy it's
now being really used and loved. Maybe I'll get another Roadini at some
point to fill the void. Who knows? I have too many bikes according to my
wife, but that hasn't stopped me yet :)

Patrick - she just turned 3 a few days ago, so to me she's huge (well,
maybe it's just her 3-year-old attitude that's huge) and growing up far too
fast. Can't even fathom her going off to college, but luckily I have time.
She really loves longer rides in the Burley, but only if we have a stuffy
strapped in the seat beside her, lots of snacks, and we let her collect
sticks and rocks and snails along the way (???). Oddly enough we just
bought her her first *real* skateboard for her birthday, somaybe
our "little" ones are more alike than we thought?

[RBW] Re: FS: Bikes on eBay, CraigsLIst, and Other Sites

2021-01-19 Thread Damien
Found this on eBay: Joe Appaloosa, 51cm, looks to be brand new. May be a
little $$$ especially with the new Joe A's around the corner, but thought
I'd share in the case that someone needs one right now. I do think this is
what Blue Lug is selling their stock of Joe's for at the moment.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Drop Bar/Stem/Brake/Shifter set up

2021-01-01 Thread Damien
Thanks for the feedback both o' y'all. Guess it makes sense to be a bit
more specific than just drops/stem/levers/shifters.

So, ideally
Stem length - 70-80mm
Bar width - 44 to 48 cm
Bar end shifters would be preferable. Index would be great, but am
certainly open to friction
Aero brake levers
Fully wrapped is cool, but certainly not necessary.

Anyways, preferences above, but please feel free to let me know what you
have, since I'm open to other set ups.

Hey all,

As the title suggests, I'm looking to see if anyone has a drop bar, stem,
shifter, and brake lever set up they are looking to rid themselves of. Let
me know what you have! I'm looking to switch from my current Albatross set
up on the ol' Sam.

Thanks all!

Well, wow. This is a really lovely Riv. Thanks for sharing.

Fun fact: your bike is legal drinking age in Canada!

This, along with Jason's, are probably my two favourite Sams. Both are
inspiring me to change around my current Sam setup.

[RBW] Black hole of mixing Campagnolo and Shimano

2020-11-20 Thread Damien
Hey all, hoping to tap your collective knowledge on this topic. I have a
pretty standard Albatross-Riv-Shimano set up on my Sam (Deore RD, Tiagra
FD, 11-36 9 speed cassette with Sugino triple up front, Microshift 9 speed
bar end shifters) and am *exploring *the idea of converting to drop bars
and using 9 speed Campagnolo Centaur shifters (since I love the way these
look and feel), potentially using a JTek Shiftmate 3.

It sounds simple, but as with most things, I imagine it's not as simple as
it sounds. Before I start getting parts together for this mess, would love
to know if anyone feels strongly about this working well together, not
working well together, or if it's not worth the hassle and I just stick
with my Microshift bar ends on the drops. I figured that it would be nice
to keep the whole upright stem-handlebar-levers-shifters combo in tact if I
want to go back upright, and since I'm changing bar styles, why not
consider another option?

Anyways, would love all of your thoughts on this, especially if you have
first-hand experience. Thank you all in advance!

I had one of these stolen too (along with the bike it was perched upon). I
still pine for it and may purchase another at some point. I did get this
same saddle in Honey, but it's just not the same.

[RBW] Re: Rock n' Road Tires on a Sam Hillborne

2020-05-03 Thread Damien
Currently have them on my 51 Sam.

They're a bit loud on pavement but don't really feel that slow, and I
certainly don't mind it. They've been great on trails, singletrack and
gravel. I'd recommend them.

I have also had Snoqualmie Pass' on another bike of mine and they rode
s nice. Surprisingly comfy on gravel, but they're definitely a smooth
tread so keep that in mind if you need some bite. I always worried about
puncturing or flatting, but it never happened once.
