[RBW] Re: 26" road/gravel tire shortage

2020-08-29 Thread Jack K
Michael,

If you liked your Marathon Racers then you may be happy with the Marathon
Supreme, but opt for the high-zoot Evo version. If you're used to paying
Compass/RH tire prices then even the spendy version of the Marathon Supreme
is bargain priced. Despite the name, Marathon Racers were never a
particularly fast tire and are now an old design. The Marathon Supreme EVO
uses Schwalbe's latest tire technologies and does extremely well in testing
and real world reporting for efficiency, durability, flat shrugoffability,
road grip, etc... Can be run tubeless, if that's your thing and the black
sidewalls with reflective band are durable and surprisingly visible at
night. I'm running the 26x1.6" EVO version and am quite pleased with them,
but they're available wider (2"?) if you need more meat. I've ordered
several sets over a couple of years from EU-based mailorder shops (usually
Bike24, Starbike or Bike-Discount.de) and never paid more than $40 / tire
for the most expensive folding EVO version.

If you'd like links to credible instrumented testing of this tire I can
look that up for you. Record setting Velomobiles often use a 26" tire out
back and every watt is precious to those guys, so there's been more than a
little lab testing and real world experience with 26" road-going tires.
Being part of Schwalbe's Trekking tire line the Marathon Supreme isn't the
lightest, fastest 26" road tire out there, but for everyday use I find it a
great combination of zippiness and toughness.

I recently listed a NOS pair of those Sidi Touring shoes on ebay and they
sold within minutes to a guy in Japan. Fastest eBay sale ever ... It would
appear there are folks who like those Sidi shoes enough to have automated
searches constantly watching for them. They are really nice cyclo shoes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hot Waxing Chains

2020-08-19 Thread Jack K
I've been following a variant of Zero Friction Adam's suggested routine for
years, but unlike Adam I adopted that routine out of laziness. I hot wax
with Chain Wax(TM), a paraffin + PTFE product that I bought a lifetime
supply of when it went off the market 20-ish years ago. Between hot waxings
I lube up with Boeshield (usually) or ProGold (until the bottle runs out).
Somewhere I got a tiny drip bottle of Boeshield about the size of my thumb,
which is easy to carry on the bike when need be and it's easy to refill.

Boeshield is fairly clean stuff, but eventually the chain does get to the
point where it leaves a smudge on your calf if you bump it. I take that as
a sign it's time for an off-bike clean and hot wax treatment. Sounds like
maybe Smoov would be better than Boeshield? I'll likely give it a try in a
decade or so when my supply of Boeshield runs out.

[RBW] Re: Speedometer, wired or wireless recommendations.

2020-08-08 Thread Jack K
Although many folks are now using GPS based units or smart phone apps,
there are still nice olde tyme wheel-magnet-counting cycling computers
available -- to my eye anyway. My most recent cyclocomputer purchase was a
Cateye Strada Slim which I like better than any other traditional cycling
computer I've owned over the years. Very small unit with big display,
lightweight (if that matters), wireless, batteries last multiple seasons.

I also have Garmin Touring GPS based unit, which I like, but that's really
a very different animal. If I need/want turn-by-turn routing, which I often
do, then I'm grateful to have the GPS option. But if navigation or
performance data for post-ride analysis isn't needed then the Cateye is way
more convenient, smaller, lighter, doesn't need to be charged prior to each
use and, well, just feels like enough computer tech on my bars for JRA.

There are plenty of other options for a traditional cyclocomputer, but if
you haven't seen the Cateye Strada Slim you may want to have a look at it

[RBW] Re: Bike Racks, non hitch recommendations.

2020-07-28 Thread Jack K
Hi all,

Likely not a good choice for Joel, since he's mentioned only needing
occasional use, but I thought I'd mention a rack that appears to fill a
unique niche in the marketplace and was the only cost effective solution I
found for my rack needs ... The Thule Raceway Platform PRO 2 is a bumper
mount rack that uses trays to carry 2 bikes, like many hitch racks do; this
thing:
https://www.thule.com/en-us/bike-rack/trunk-bike-racks/thule-raceway-platform-pro-2-_-1685475

I wanted a hitch mount rack, but the cheapest hitch I could find for my
vehicle was $800+, then another $300+ for the rack, which doesn't seem like
a prudent investment on a 15 year old car. Supporting the weight of a bike
on it's wheels makes a lot more sense to me than creating a couple of point
loads not far from the center of the bike's top tube, which most trunk
mount racks do. In my case the bike I wanted to transport doesn't have a
top tube, so trays were preferred, if not required. I'm not aware of
another tray style rack that's also bumper mount, so I was pretty excited
to find this model Thule. Not cheap, but I found mine for $300 brand new,
in the box, so there are deals out there.

I also have a Saris Bones 2 rack that I've had for 15-ish years and still
use to transport my tandem occasionally. People seem to love the Bones and
it was state of the art 20 years ago, but if you compare the methods and
materials it uses to secure the bicycle(s) to the rack and the rack to the
car it's apparent that rack technology has continued to advance and racks
like my Thule Raceway Pro Platform or other premium models are in a
different league. They'll cost more than a Bones, even used, but after
having my prized Bridgestone RB-1's top-tube damaged on a older "hang by
the top-tube" rack a couple of years ago I'm willing to spend a bit for a
rack that better protects my bike, my car and my nerves.

Perhaps this is part of the reason we're not understanding each other very
well, I interpreted Jeffrey's post as a request for information. Opinion
can be informative, but it should be presented as opinion rather than as a
statement of fact.

As I wrote earlier (and provided some reasons for), it's common for people
to have more difficulty climbing on a bent, whether it has 2 or 3 wheels.
Unless you're only talking about single speed bents I don't understand why
you would "extrapolate that out to an overweight fellow with bad knees
probably not being thrilled with the experience." Can you explain further?
All my bikes have multigear drivetrains, so it's possible to shift into a
lower gear when climbing a hill. A trike will be stable no matter how slow
it's going, so it can be geared down much, much lower than a two wheeled
bike. If one is willing to climb hills at slow speed then a trike can get a
rider with "bad knees" up a hill with less knee stress (if that means force
transferred through the knee) than any two wheeled recumbent or upright
bike. You just have to be willing to twiddle away at a comfortable cadence
while doing only 2 mph on the climb. This kind of "easy on the knees"
gearing isn't possible on a two wheeled velocipede, whether one sits on the
velocipede upright or recumbent.

If he gets a motor then all that is out the window. At any rate it's an
> opinion on a topic that really boils down to "ride as many as you can and

Yes, a motor may be a good option, which is why I also mentioned it. Yes,
"ride as many as you can and pick what works for you" is a great idea,
which is why I suggested it. Suggesting a particular type, brand and model
based on very incomplete information is a recipe for disappointment, if not
disaster.

[RBW] Re: Recumbent help for Dad, un-Rivy post

2020-05-26 Thread Jack K
I'm a bit baffled how we were able to identify the perfect type/brand/model
of recumbent for Jeffery's dad, when so little about Jeffery's dad's
cycling needs, wants and ambitions were stated. Maybe gobsmacked would be a
better description than "baffled". In any case, I'd strongly suggest a road
trip to a recumbent shop or browsing Craigslist to find some designs to
try. Anything else is mere guesswork, at best, based on incomplete
information.

Delta trikes fell out of favor in part because the design is inherently
less stable than a similar capability tadpole design. Can the stability of
a delta design be increased? Sure, but the more stable design will trade
off other qualities. In particular, a well designed stable delta is going
to give up significantly on sportiness and fun in the ride quality. All
sporty trikes I know of are tadpole design, but not all tadpole design
trikes are targeted at sporty riding with low-slung, extremely reclined
seats. Here's one example of a more relaxed tadpole:
http://www.ti-trikes.com/ BTW, I don't have a dog in this race, and don't
even care for trikes myself, but wanted to clear up a misconception.

I'm also perplexed by the statement, "recumbents in general aren't awesome
for bad knees on hills without a motor." Can you explain further?
Recumbents generally don't climb well (quickly) because they're usually
heavier and the rider can't stand to mash the pedals to get over a steep
section. The only option is to "sit and spin", which is why recumbents
usually use lower gearing than upright bikes and, importantly, why they can
be easier on knees than a stand and mash geared upright bike. Certainly the
fit requirements for any particular recumbent, trike or bike, need to be
addressed by the user or his bike shop, which they often aren't. For
example, many people find spinning lower gears the way to go on a recumbent
and many of those folks find it easier to spin low gears with crank arms
that are considerably shorter than they're used to on an upright bike. I
always preferred 170mm's on upright road bikes, but even 165's were clumsy
when riding recumbent. I'm currently riding 152 and 155mm arms, but lots of
recumbent folks are riding much shorter than that (140mm or even shorter)
to foster high RPM, low oomph, easy on the knees pedaling. I'd refer anyone
interested in this topic to the many discussions on Bent Rider OnLine,
where the topic is discussed more than you'd likely care to read.

Max,

Thanks for the update, it's great to see the Racer M's found such a great
home! Really love the blue & cream with silver components and the mix of
bits of classic and more modern aesthetic.

The first photo was taken in Cambridge? It sure looks like Cambridge. I've
moved around a fair bit for work, but my favorite move was two years I
spent in Watertown right on the Cambridge border. Really a fabulous place
to live, but even more so if you're a cyclist. Really, really miss that
place ...

Just as getting an Aeropress a decade or so ago killed my interest in
Starbucks, getting a large size Aerobie a couple of years ago (wanted one
since I was a kid) killed any interest in messing about with a
Frisbee-style flying disc. The Aerobie is in a totally different league and
hugely more fun, very highly recommended! The Aerobie is probably much less
tolerant of dog chewing though, so there is that.

Both sets of Paul's brakes are still available. Note that the black set are
original (long reach) Racer calipers, while the silver set are medium reach
Racer-M's.

Thanks,

Steve, if you're paying $100 for a decent 11 speed chain or $300 for a
serviceable 11 speed chain tool you really ought to rethink your part and
tool suppliers. For reference I just fired up www.jenson.com and found the
following apparent bargains on 11 spd chains and chain tools (w/ free
shipping on a $60 order):

   - SRAM PC-1110 cheapie chains for $14/each:

   - Cheapier portable 11spd chain tool $4.90/each:

   $36.95/each:

When you wrote about the $100 11 speed chains and $300 11 speed chain tools
did you really think that was accurate or was that intended to be a
humorous exaggeration? In any case, stock up now while prices are low!

Cheers,

[RBW] Re: ideas for daytime visibility: vests and whatnot

2019-09-27 Thread Jack K
Somewhere in the cycling archive that used to be my garage I have a new
mesh safety vest I ordered, but never used, that I'd be happy to pass on to
someone who can use it for the cost of shipping. I ordered this hi-vis
one-size-fits-most safety vest several years ago from Nashbar, but
discovered when it arrived that I'm smaller than the one size it mostly
fits. Still in it's package, but I'd have to dig around for it.
"Construction worker style" and pretty bulky over a cycling jersey on my
5'7" frame, but if you're bigger or riding in street clothes or want
maximum real estate devoted to retina searing safety yellow then this may
work better for you than it did for me.

Someone mentioned the reflective safety triangles as a "game changer" and
I'll second that! The common Aardvark brand one could use a bit more velcro
strappage to keep it from flopping around, but is extremely visible. This
thing:
https://www.nashbar.com/aardvark-reflective-triangle-yield-symbol-7x7-with-velcro-strap-yeild-symbol/p435349

[RBW] WTB: Nitto R14 Rack

2019-09-21 Thread Jack K
Hi,

I'm on the hunt for a Nitto R14 rack (silver or black, tombstone or no) to
try on my recumbent. Most racks don't fit well, if at all, and I'm not sure
the R14 will work out, so looks for something used to minimize my
investment in this experiment. Anyone holding an R14 they're not using?

Cheers and safe riding,

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: NEW Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 Tent + Titanium Stakes

2019-06-22 Thread Jack K
No footprint comes with this tent, it's optional and not included with the
tent as it comes from Big Agnes. I didn't buy the footprint from Big Agnes
for my Mtn Glow version of the Copper Spur tent, instead I made one from
Tyvek sheet that is far less expensive, lighter and packs smaller. I was
able to buy the materials (Tyvek, adhesive corner tabs, thin elastic cord)
for a bit over $20 on eBay. Easy peasey ...

Last call on the new Big Agnes Copper Spur *+ titanium stake package*
before it heads to eBay. Now $350 + $15 shipping. That's considerably less
than I paid for the tent alone and I got a pretty good deal on it.

[RBW] Re: 3x9 brifter recommendations? (Sam Hillborne 62cm, Tektro r559, noodles)

2019-04-17 Thread Jack K
To reduce "knee jam on sharp turn" issues with bar-end shifters I always
trim off a shifter body's worth of handle bar end. For me that helps a lot
in keeping from getting poked by the shift lever. I've seen it written that
some bars narrow enough away from the tip that a bar-end shift will no
longer fit inside if an inch of two is lopped off, but I've trimmed quite a
few bars from various makers and never experienced that issue. Not saying
it doesn't happen, just that it hasn't happened to me.

BTW, although lots of folks do this sort of handlebar-ectomy with a hacksaw
with good results, I've always used a plumbing tubing cutter. The new cut,
after a bit of sandpapering, has always looked equally clean and precise as
the original manufacturer supplied end of the bar.

named that, I've been to it many times when it had the old name. It is a
big show/swap and I was always happy I went, but ... When they say
"classic" they mean more classic (i.e. vintage) than most Riv-folk are
focused on. They're be lots of Whizzers, 40's & 50's balloon tire bikes,
banana seat & ape hanger barred "Krate" bikes and a show of custom
"lowrider" bikes, with a random smattering of "lightweight" drop bar bikes
and goods for them. I've been to far smaller show/swaps that held far more
interest for me, but it obviously depends on your cycling interests ...

[RBW] Re: Riv-ish bike shop in Ann Arbor?

2019-04-05 Thread Jack K
When I head back to A2 there are 3 shops I like to visit, though I'm not a
good judge of how Riv-ish they are:

   - Midwest Tandem: Lots of tandems (doh!) and recumbents and usually some
other interesting velocipedes in the shop to gawk at. Be prepared to spend
some time, as the owner tends to be pretty chatty.
   https://www.yelp.com/biz/midwest-bike-and-tandem-ann-arbor
   - SIC Transit Cycles: Probably the shop in A2 most like what you asked
for. Good folks, good selection of stuff.
   https://www.yelp.com/biz/sic-transit-cycles-ann-arbor?osq=Bicycle+Shop
   - Shinola Lifestyle Boutique: Shinola has a showroom on Main St.
downtown that's fun to walk through. Get yourself a cappuccino from the
Shinola espresso bar and enjoy a leisurely tour of chi chi leather goods,
watches and bicycles from Shinola. I can't imagine buying anything there,
but I do enjoy wandering through.

Since you grew up in A2 I assume you know to stay away from Student Bike
Shop. They've been selling stolen bikes and abusing customers for at least
30 years that I know of and somehow they're still in business. A thoroughly
unpleasant place to spend any time at all in my experience.

Cheers,

-Jack

[RBW] Re: Bike Shop Recs DC Area

2019-03-24 Thread Jack K
I visited the DC area a couple of months ago and had a great time poking
around Bikes At Vienna (http://www.bikesatvienna.com/). They specialize in
recumbent and folding bikes, with a good selection of less common
accessories too (Brooks saddles, dynohubs, etc...). If you have no interest
in recumbents or folders it may not be your cup'o tea, but it was well
worth the trip for me..

[RBW] WTB: Microshift MTN 10 or 11 Speed Barend Shifters

2019-03-12 Thread Jack K
Hey Riv'ians,

I have need of a Microshift barend shifter for either Shimano 10 or 11
speed mountain RD's. The 11 would be perfect, but 10 works fine since I
haven't bought the RD or cassette yet. This is going on another micro road
bike build for a 9 year old pal, so the budget is too tight for new. Anyone
have Microshift MTN barends they'd like to sell? I actually only need the
right shifter, but happy to buy a set or just a right.

Thanks!

Gosh darn it! Yesterday I posted to the 650B list thinking I was posting to
iBOB. Apparently I needed another dose of humility and repeated the same

"RBW'er" for "iBOB" in my post and it'll make more sense.

[RBW] Re: Ottolock Initial Reviews???

2018-05-26 Thread Jack K
I bought a 30" Ottolock pretty much as soon as I saw them available
mailorder. My first one was replaced quickly and easily by Ottolock,
because the default combo didn't work and it was impossible to set a new
combo. The replacement has been flawless so far, though I haven't used it a
ton. Even if it provides only modest security the combination of light
weight, small size and ease of use makes it a winner in my mind. BTW, for
me the Ottolock replaced a luggage lock and seat-leash cable combo, which
is far less secure and more fiddily to use, though lighter.

WRT the linked video ... I do think Ottolock has (or at least had) a QC
issue and feel for the guy who got 2 apparently defective replacements. I'm
very unconvinced by his shim pick test though, since he did the test on a
defective lock where the pawl wasn't engaging the toothed strap. The fact
that he was able to slide his defective lock open even without the shim
makes me wonder how difficult we should have expected it to be to slip a
shim between the unengaged pawl and the toothed strap. I wish he would have
asked Ottolock to send him a lock they had tested as working properly when
he asked for a replacement. That's what I did and they were very helpful
and quick about providing my warranty replacemnent, even paying for all the
shipping charges.

[RBW] Re: Flickstand alternatives? How to keep the front stable while not moving?

2018-03-02 Thread Jack K
A ready-made solution of the "strong, light parking band spanning the
distance from the backside of the handlebar to the front side of the brake
lever" type is available from the ClickStand people. This thing here:
https://www.adventurecycling.org/cyclosource-store/equipment/sp/click-stand-brake-band/
It does cost $2 though and you don't get the satisfaction of recycling used
inner-tube rubber into something useful.

These 2 for $.99 silicone bands have also worked well for me, stretched
from front wheel valve over downtube back to valve:

[RBW] FS: Touring Goodies (Panniers / H'Bar Bags / Rack -- Ortlieb / Tubus / Jandd)

2017-12-12 Thread Jack K

Hey Riv-folk,

Hoping to convert my excess touring gear into cash for other cycling
goodies. What iBOB wouldn't want to wake up to Ortlieb under the tree on
Christmas morning? Also the perfect Christmas gift for your spouse (if you
like sleeping on the couch)! ;)

I'll try to do actual shipping, if that doesn't get too complicated. Should
be $10-ish for bar bags and $15-ish for panniers to most points in the
ConUS. Less if you're close to NC, more if you're in Hawaii or Alaska.

The stuff ...

*Handlebar Bags:*

   - *LN Ortlieb Ultimate 6 M Classic Handlebar Bag*: Highly visible
yellow/black color, indistinguishable from new other than installation
cable has normal kink from being installed, 1 key for bar lock. Installed
and rode a few times with it empty to test, has never carried a load, been
wet or even slightly dusty. *$80 + shipping*
   - *E**C** Jandd Touring Handlebar Bag*: Used on a couple of weeklong
tours, but in great shape. Mounting system is brilliant, goes on or off in
seconds. Current mount fits quill stems and standard size bars, but an
inexpensive adapter for threadless stems and oversized bars is readily
available from Jandd. No shoulder strap is supplied by Jandd, but I'll
include the very nice one I purchased for it at a luggage shop. MSRP $105.
*$65
   + shipping*

*Panniers:*

   - *NEW-IN-BOX Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic Panniers:* Highly visible
yellow/black color, matches Ortlieb handlebar bag above. New-in-box,
current model with QL2.1 mounting system, 40 L, super waterproof roll top
closure and just about indestructible. MSRP $180. *$150 + shipping*
   - *NEW “Old Style” Ortlieb Bikepacker Plus Rear Panniers:* Black, extra
$ “Plus” model with lighter weight 100% waterproof fabric. Older version
with very useful exterior mesh pockets and 2 horizontal + 2 vertical
compression straps that are lacking on current model. 42 liters, QL1
mounting hardware. Current MSRP $240. *$170 + shipping*
   - *NEW “Old Style” Ortlieb Mini-Biker Lite Front Panniers:* Front
pannier matching the “Old Style” Bikepacker Plus listed above. Black, extra
$ lightweight “Plus” fabric. Older version that’s very similar to the
current Sport-Packer Plus model, but with very useful horizontal & vertical
compression straps that are lacking on current model. 20-25 liters, QL1
mounting hardware. MSRP $165 when they were available. *$140 +
   shipping*

*Racks:*

   - *LN Tubus Cosmo Stainless Rear Rack (with low-ish rider mounts):*
Installed,
then removed without ever having a pannier mounted on it less than 100
miles later. Indistinguishable from new other than marking on adjustable
seat-stay mounting arms where they were clamped by the rack hardware.
Original version of the Cosmo, so slightly different than current model.
Included is the $13 Tubus "Lower Rack Mounting Kit", which can be used to
position the rack slightly further back to increase clearance for heels or
disc brakes, or help on bikes with short-ish chainstays. Paid $210+$13=$223
at TheTouringStore.Com a couple of years ago. *$135 + shipping for
   everything*

Cheers and safe riding,

[RBW] Michigan iBOB+Riv Meet-up This Saturday -- Last Call!

2017-10-10 Thread Jack K
Hi RBW-folk,

This will be my last post to the list about this event, so please take note
listers from Michigan, Ohio and Windsor ...

The Michigan iBOB + Riv meet 'n greet is coming up this Saturday, Oct. 14.
We'll have a short ride in the Ann Arbor area, followed by socializing at
HOMES brewery. Please join us if you can!

We'll meet at HOMES Brewery (*not* Sic Transit Cycles as first planned) at
noon on Saturday, Oct. 14 for a casual (30-ish mile) ride, followed by food
& drink. In case of rain the event will move inside HOMES for food, drink
and comradery of fellow bike geeks. Feel free to join us for just the ride,
just the socializing, or both, as your schedule allows.

About the ride ... There's a lot of interest in a mixed gravel/paved route,
but some of us prefer to stay on pavement. The plan is to offer both
(30-ish mile) options and split into two groups, though route specifics are
still being worked out. I'll be riding pavement, but I'm told the mixed
pavement/gravel option is easily doable on a road bike with 30mm tires.

*If you may be able to join us please contact me with your email address,
so I can add you to the list for email updates.*

To recap:

*What:* Southeast MI iBOB + Riv Meet'n Greet
*When:* Saturday, Oct. 14 at noon
*Where:* HOMES Brewery, 2321 Jackson Ave., Ann Arbor
*What You Need To Do:* Contact me (Jack) with your email address

Cheers!

[RBW] Michigan iBOB Meet'n Greet -- RBW'ers Invited Too!

2017-10-06 Thread Jack K
Hi Riv Folk,

The Michigan iBOB meet and greet is coming up Saturday, Oct. 14. We'll have
a short ride in the Ann Arbor area, followed by refreshments and
socializing at HOMES brewery. Please join us if you can!

A slight change to the previous plan is we'll meet at HOMES Brewery, rather
than Sic Transit Cycles, at noon on Saturday, Oct. 14 for a casual (30-ish
mile) ride, followed by food & drink. In case of rain the event will move
inside HOMES for food, drink and comradery of fellow bike geeks. Feel free
to join us for just the ride, just the socializing, or both, as your
schedule allows.

About the ride ... There's a lot of interest in a mixed gravel/paved route,
but some of us prefer to stay on pavement. The plan is to offer both
options, hopefully starting together on the road and coming together again
later. The ace iBOB Ann Arbor route planning team is still working out the
details, stay tuned for route specifics...

*If you may be able to join us please contact me with your email address,
so I can add you to the list for email updates.*

2017-09-30 Thread Jack K
Hi RBW-folk,

There's a Michigan iBOB (internet Bridgestone Owners Bunch) event coming up

Almost a dozen iBOB's have expressed interest so far, please join us if you
can!

We'll meet at Sic Transit Cycles in Ann Arbor at noon on Saturday, Oct. 14,
for a casual ride (25-30 miles), followed by food & drink at HOMES Brewery.
In case of rain we'll skip the ride and move directly to HOMES for food,
drink and vigorous debate on the value and uses of a ball peen hammer in
breaking in a new Brooks saddle.

If you may be able to join us please contact me with your email address, so
I can add you to the list for email updates.

Also, to clarify a bit, the *Walrus Zoid 1 Tent* is a real tent, not a bivy

tall (online reviews mention 5'10" as about the limit to sit up straight.

Re: [RBW] Re: 3M helicopter tape

2017-04-08 Thread Jack K
Marc40a,

Thanks for the heads-up on the water application technique. Super helpful!
I've had a roll of this in my bike toolbox for a decade+ and have used it
to great success in small applications, like spots on sides of the
head-tube where bar-end shifter housing rubs, but larger areas always ended
up oriented wrong or with a wrinkle that wouldn't come out. Can't wait to
give the water technique a try!

Cheers,

-Jack

[RBW] WTB: New or Used Compass Naches Pass (26″ x 1.8″) Tire

2017-04-08 Thread Jack K
Hey Riv folk,

I realize this is a long shot, but no harm in trying ... If anyone has a
Compass 26″ x 1.8″ Naches Pass tire, or tires, they'd like to sell, I'm in
a buying mood! Can be new or used, 1 or more tires, but only interested in
the black sidewall version. Even a Naches Pass that's mostly used up would
be of interest, so I could test the fit and ride quality.

Thanks!

[RBW] FS: LN VO Touring Pedals + Stainless Toe-Clips + Straps

2017-01-16 Thread Jack K
Hey Riv-folk,

I have a set of very new VO touring pedals that are surplus to my needs and
hoping someone here can use them. They have very few miles on the, maybe a
couple hundred. The only sign of use is some scratches on the very tip of
the top of the toe clip, where they touched the ground before the pedals
was flipped right-side up when starting after a stop. The set includes the
following (with VO website pricing in paren's):

   - VO Touring Pedals ($55) -- super smooth sealed bearings
   - VO Laminated Toestraps ($25) -- near perfect color match to a honey
   Brooks
   - VO Stainless Toe-clips ($13) -- genuine shiny metal

All this pedal goodness totals $93 from VO. Looking for $55 + $5 shipping
to anywhere in the ConUS.

Cheers and safe riding!

Patrick, are you referring to the White Industries LMDS?

I've never laid hands on any of the deraileurs produced in the U.S. during
the CNC boom, but none of them seemed to have a very good reputation for
effectively moving a chain across gears. Neato looking bits though ...

[RBW] Re: kalloy dirt drop stems...

2016-10-08 Thread Jack K
I've had what appears to be that very same stem (though silver) on the
MTB-turned-urban-assault-vehicle I built up in grad school (about 1997). I
used that bike tons for about a decade, though I rarely ride it now. The
Kalloy stem is obviously a cruder piece than the Nitto Dirtdrop, but it's
been perfectly functional and doesn't look bad at all. I wouldn't hesitate
to use the one you pointed to in your build.

[RBW] FS: NEW 26" Wheelset (All Silver, XT M760 / Mavic XC-717 / DT Butted Satinless)

2016-09-12 Thread Jack K
Hi RBW folk,

I have a new (as in "not ever used") set of nice 26" wheels that I bought
for a build years ago, but never used. Would like to move them out of my
garage and into yours!

The wheels are all silver, built by one of the online mail-order places,
but I don't recall who. I've typically used Colorado Cyclist, but maybe
Excel Sports? Purchased to build a Waterford 1900 "Adventure Touring" bike
that just didn't work out for me. The wheels are for rim brakes only
(canti, v, centerpull, etc...) with silver Shimano XT M760 hubs, silver
Mavic XC717 rims, 32 DT butted stainless spokes front & rear, silver brass
nipples. Includes silver XT skewers and original hang tag for the XT hub.

The real prize here is the Mavic XC-717 rims, which are no longer produced
in silver. A great lightweight, strong do-everything rim with a stellar
reputation on and off-road. All XC-717 rims come drilled for Schrader, but
with an insert for Presta fixed in place. So, easy to use either type valve.

I did mount a cassette and tires on these and clamp them in my un-built
Waterford frame to admire them while the frame sat in my living room
waiting to be built. Not a mark on them, though perhaps a little dust.

$290 + $35 shipping

Cheers and safe riding!

[RBW] Re: RB-1 tire clearence and rear spacing

2016-08-20 Thread Jack K
Although advertised as 128mm, my '93 RB-1 came spaced wider than that. A
130mm spaced hub fits with room to spare. Manufacturing variances, no doubt.

Also, the 700x28 Ritchey tires that came stock in '93 are *way* smaller
than any "28" tire I know of today. I actually still have those original
700x28 Tom Slick tires and for giggles installed them on the RB-1 again a
couple of years ago. They are tiny compared to the 700x25 Michelin Pro4
tires on the bike these days (which are famous for measuring bigger than
marked -- the 25's measure 27mm wide on my Open Pro rims). Even larger
tires may fit, lots of room between chainstays and in fork. The pinch point
I see is between the top of tire and bottom of front brake caliper. I'm
using the original Superbe Pro calipers, perhaps some other brake would
give slightly more clearance.

 expected. What a journey!

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of staying with a couple in Davis
who have (literally) a house full of nice bikes. Many are Steve Rex
creations. I had heard of him but had not seen his work in person. The
craftsmanship & attention to detail is incredible. Next time I'm in the
northern provinces I intend to visit his shop.

Comments re: your custom (have not read every post here). The cables
under the bottom bracket are esp. nice. The racks are absolutely
artistic. While I'd opt for a platform on the rear (just because),
 the
low pannier rails are perfect. And the detachable front low riders are
gorgeous. Based on what I've seen, Steve Rex is an artist who has figured
out a way to make a living doing his art.

Re: [RBW] Re: Nine Speed Index Setup

2016-06-22 Thread Jack K
Hey RBW-folk,

I'm re-cockpitting my older Bilenky tandem today, going from an 8 speed
bar-end shifted setup to 9 speed Shimano cassette/RD, shifted by 11 speed
Campy Athena Ergo levers in a pretty classic Shimergo setup. This will be
my first time doing anything with Ergopower levers, please wish me luck for
an easy install! As part of this update I'm also installing cable splitters
(as used on S coupled bikes) to allow use of easily obtainable half-bike
length Campy headed cables. I assume one could use this same technique to
install those latest Dura-Ace Polymer coated cables on a tandem as well.

BTW, I was just investigating those Polymer coated cables online yesterday.
They get extremely favorable reviews (for what that's worth) and at least
appear to be a genuine improvement in cable slipperyness.

Cheers and safe riding!

[RBW] Re: Drop bars on Roadeo demos. Which make/model?

2016-06-04 Thread Jack K
Nitto M106NAS? Shape looks close, but my M106NAS have screened on logos and
the bars pictured appear to have engraved logos.

The M106NAS is "short and shallow" bar whose shape works well with modern
brake (or brifter) shapes. The shape is very close to the (much cheaper)
Soma HWY1 bar.

2016-05-30 Thread Jack K

Hi Riv folks,

As part of my "I ain't got no job" sale and just in time for your epic
summer rides ... All prices are "+ shipping", where shipping will be a best
guess rounded to $5. Figure $15 for panniers and $35 for wheels within the
ConUS.

*Bags and racks:*

   - *NEW Carradice Super-C Saddlepack* Mounts to saddle rails or loops,
not the transverse style of Carradice bag. Black waterproof cotton duck,
lotsa reflective material, 8 liter capacity, This guy:
   http://tinyurl.com/gwy4mny *$65*
   - *New (no box) Ortlieb Back-Roller Classic Panniers **(Black)*:
Stuffed with pillows and ridden around the block, then stored in my garage.
Slight dust, have the hook inserts to fit Tubus diameter racks installed,
but I think there was another set of inserts which I have not located. Like
these, but with QL1 mounting system: http://tinyurl.com/h6l33d4. Retail
   at $180. * $135*
   - *New-In-Box Ortlieb Front-Roller Classic **Panniers (Black)*: Box

visible yellow color is no longer available. Like these, with QL2 mounting

of straps on smaller bags are discolored, but otherwise excellent, no
tears, abrasion, etc.., color is black & teal (green w/ hint of blue). Can
get photos if interested. *Buzzard rears = $65, Baby Buzzard fronts =
   $45, full set = $100*
   - *New Tubus Cosmo Stainless Rear Rack* (with low rider mounts):
Installed, then removed without ever having a pannier mounted on it.
Original version of the Cosmo, so looks like this:

disc brakes, or help on bikes with shortish chainstays. Paid $210+$13=$223
at TheTouringStore.Com; say *$165* for everything.

*Wheels and Tires:*

   - *Schmidt dyno-hub Tandem Wheelset (10/9/8/7 Speed Shimano Compatible)**:
*All silver, 700c, 36 spoke Schmidt classic (oil can) front hub, 40
spoke DT/Hugi Swiss tandem rear hub (threaded on left), spaced 145 mm OLD
(modern non-Santana tandem standard). Bought on list or eBay (can’t
remember) a few years ago to build my ultimate BOB-ish tandem, then never
used. Original owner stated they were built by Peter White and had less
than 1000 miles. I can’t confirm that, but build and condition seem
consistent. Look good to me, but assume they’ll need a touch-up truing (my
assumption with any used wheels). No skewers. Cost considerably more than
   $800 to build, *$550.*

   - *Mavic Ksyrium SLS Wheelset (11/10/9/8/7 Shimano Compatible): *Came on
new bike I bought. Less than 100 miles of use, very clean, no marks on
freehub drive sheel, very smooth bearings. But, stored near coast, so have
slight white crud in hidden spots and slight discoloration of bare aluminum
(rim sidewalls, skewers bits). Not noticeable from 3 feet away. These
are fairly highend factory wheels from Mavic, with 18 bladed spokes front
and 20 rear. Includes extremely nice original internal cam Mavic
skewers. Ultra-light, under 1400 grams (as per Mavic)! List was up around
$1300 and I see them discounted on the web for $900-ish. *$600*

   - *NEW 26” (559) XT M760 / Mavic 717 Wheelset (for V-Brakes and 10/9/8/7
Speed Shimano)**: *All silver. Purchased from one of the big online
retailers (Colorado Cyclist most likely) back in the 9 speed era when XT
M760 was current, but never used. When received I did mount a cassette and
two different tires to test the fit of the tires in my touring frame, then
hung in my garage for a decade. Silver XT M760 hubs, 32 stainless butted
spokes front and rear, light/expensive Mavic XC717 rims, original silver XT
   skewers, tags still attached. *$325*

   - *NEW Challenge Strada Bianca Open Tubular 700x30c Tires (2 / a pair,
one bike’s worth): *Supple, handmade “open tubulars”

[RBW] Re: New tire

2016-03-03 Thread Jack K
Hey Don and fellow iBOB's,

This is quite a timely post! I was shopping online for Michelin Pro4
Endurance 700x28 tires this morning. The 28mm Endurance has been out for a
while, but there's not much user info or reviews of them available online.
My main question is actual size of the 700x28 labelled tire. Can you
provide some insight on that?

I've been running the 700x25 Pro4 Service Course, which measures
considerably bigger (I measure just under 27mm wide on my Open Pro rims).
Hopefully the 700x28 Endurance are also bigger than marked. But by how
much?? Here's a very interesting write-up of the Pro4 Endurance V2 tire on
BicycleRollingResistance.com:
http://www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/road-bike-reviews/michelin-pro-4-endurance-v2-2015
The reviewer measured the Pro4 Endurance V2 700x25 at 28 mm wide --
seriously oversized. Note that the Endurance model has thicker tread than
the Service Course, as well as a bead to bead breaker layer for flat
protection on both the tread and sidewall. This is not a fragile racing
tire, yet it scores extremely well in the referenced rolling resistance
tests.

Another tire I'm very interested in is the Continental GP4000S II in the
largest 700x28 size. BicycleRollingResistance.com measured this tire at a
whopping 31mm wide and it appears to garner even lower rolling resistance
scores in their testing, though it also appears to be less long lived and
have less protection than the Pro4 Endurance. Anyone running the Conti
GP4000S II in 700x28?

Patrick's experience with Pro4 Service Course and Elk Pass tires is
interesting, but perhaps not a very "apples to apples" comparison. As he
stated, his Pro4 SC's (which I suspect were the original V1 model, which
had higher rolling resistance than the more substantial V2 Endurance)
measured a dainty 22mm wide, while the Compass Elk Pass tires measured a
much more girthy 28mm (though far from the marked 32mm size).

Anyone else with firsthand user experience with the big 700x28 versions of
the Pro4 Endurance or GP4000S II?

[RBW] Dia-Compe ENE Bottle Cage Source? How Does VO Moderniste MKII Compare?

2015-11-19 Thread Jack K

*Hey Rivillians,Anyone know a source for the Dia-Compe ENE bottle cages
shown on Riv's website (but now out of stock)? Extensive Google'ing
discovered only U.K. based sources at (oddly) prohibitively high prices.
I'd rather pay the few dollars more for the ENE cages, but if none are
available, how do the VO Moderniste MKII cages compare? They're quite a bit
lighter than the ENE cages, which are already very light, so I wonder about
durability of the VO's. Yes, I know the King Iris cages are similar, but I
really prefer the more svelte design of the ENE's or
VO's.Cheers,-JackRaleigh, NC*

long reach brakes and other Riv-ish goodies. These sold for just shy of
$1,000 in the Performance catalog, then were reduced to $700 when I saw

$400, but they are long gone now. I purchased this one at the Performance
store in Chapel Hill, NC, home of Performance. It had been used in a photo
shoot, then kicked around the warehouse for a couple of years until I
bought it late last fall. I purchased it for a friend, being far too big
for me, but his wife banned the new bike acquisition, so I'd like to get it
out of my garage. Absolutely new, never ridden, with the only known issues
a couple of minor scuffs in the paint and on the saddle corners from
 kicking around the Performance warehouse.

 Major features:

- Reynolds 725 Cro-Moly butted steel tubing
- 1 Cro-Moly steel fork with lugged crown
- Beautiful blue paint, with mostly *silver* components -- extremely
unusual and nice for a modern bike!
- Brakes Long reach (47-57'ish mm) Dia-Compe BRS-101
- Brake Levers Tektro polished alloy
- Down-tube shifters Sun-Race SLR63 (8 speed index or friction)
- Silver Tange traditional headset
- Crankset Fuji Alloy Forged 42/52T Chainrings
- Bottom Bracket Sealed Cartridge Square Taper
- Pedals Fuji Alloy Platform
- Front Derailleur MicroShift FD-R52
- Rear Derailleur MicroShift RD-R44S
- Cassette Sunrace, 12-25t, 8-speed
- Chain KMC HG-73
- Rims Alex RDP15, Double Wall, 32-hole
- Hubs Formula Alloy, Sealed Bearing 32-hole with quick release,
8-speed freehub
- Tires Continental Ultra Sport, 700 X 23c
- Handlebar classic bend Fuji Alloy
- Stem Fuji Alloy 1 Threaded
- Saddle Fuji Classic Comfort with Rivet (San Marco Regal knockoff)
- Seat Post Fuji Micro-Adjust Alloy, 27.2, 300mm

As I said, new, but with a few minor scuffs on paint and saddle corners.
Great commute bike with braze-ons for a rack and plenty of room for chunky
tires. Priced at $495 + shipping, or can be picked up in the Raleigh, NC
area. I prefer to have the bike packed and shipped by an LBS, to minimize
hassle and risk. I called a local shop who quoted $35 for packing,
 including all materials.

Someone please buy this, honestly it's a surprisingly nice bike for less
 than $500!

 Cheers,

 -Jack

[RBW] WTB: Nitto M106 NAS Handlebar

2015-05-22 Thread Jack K
Hey RBWOB'ers,,

I'm interested in trying a Nitto M106 NAS handlebar, but the new price of
this rare beast is more than a bit offputting. Anyone has a used one that's
surplus to their needs? 42 cm width would be perfect, but I've used 40 and
44 in other bars without issue. Anyone?

The bend on the M106 NAS appears similar to the Soma HWY 1, but the Nitto
has slightly less drop and very slightly more reach -- and, of course, is
higher quality and 3-4X the price! Photo of the Nitto M106 NAS is attached
for your handlebar viewing pleasure.

Cheers and safe riding!

Re: [RBW] Re: BQ to publish study of pedal retention usefulness in Summer issue

2015-05-22 Thread Jack K
To illustrate what I find odd in Mike's post (below) I'll suggest the
following modification of it. To be clear, this is suggested merely to
illustrate a point and possibly foster useful discussion.

On the lugged steel wannabe retro grouches... I see at least a dozen a
day. I live in an aging upper middle class neighborhood and they ride
their bikes to the coffee shop all day long. Highend custom steel bike
with flat pedals and running shoes and mirrors. At least they don't have
those goofy plaid bicycle bags! I'm glad they are out riding but the
need to belong is strong.

Cheers and safe riding!

[RBW] WTB: Tandem Child Stoker Kit

2015-05-18 Thread Jack K
Hey RBW folk,

I'm seeking a child stoker conversion kit, hopefully compete; i.e. with
BB/clamp assembly, cranks and both chainrings (1 for child crankarm and 1
for mounting inboard of existing ring on stoker left crankarm). Something
like: http://co-motion.com/index.php/product/co-motion-child-stoker-kit

This will go on my steel Bilenky tandem with a 28.6mm OD seat-tube, though
obviously a shim can be used with units fitting larger diameter seat-tubes.

Anyone have something they're no longer using and would like to move along
to a new home?

Riv-ish content?

   - Long rides in the countryside with a 5 year old is pretty Rivvy, right?
   - It's going on a fillet brazed steel Bilenky
   - My preferred bars for kid stokers are reversed Nitto moustache bars

Thanks and safe riding!

year from relatives, who selected from a list I prepared. Unfortunately
some did not fit well and others I would prefer to convert to cash now, as
I was recently laid off from my position at IBM. BTW, if anyone knows of a

Note, will ship any clothing order for $4.50, no matter how many items in
 the order. Here’s the stuff!

 1) *Rapha *Italy Country Jersey, long sleeve, in size LARGE.*SOLD*

 2) New, tags still attached, *Castelli *long sleeve wool blend, size
LARGE, beautiful scarlet red with black and cream accents. Looks-wise this
is my favorite Jersey of the lot, but the Castelli fit is slightly too
tight for me. This jersey measures 19 across the chest (seam-to-seam) just
under the arm pits, pulling it smooth, but without stretching. The only
similar one I can find is this one at Sierra Tradingpost for $160.
 http://tinyurl.com/pxj2y6y Looking for $120 + shipping. *Now $105 +
 shipping*

 3) New, all tags attached, *Rapha *Phoenix commemorative team jersey in
 size LARGE. It's this one:
http://tinyurl.com/os3q3zg Commemorates some historical Tour de France
team, I believe from the 30s or 40s. Sorry, I forgot the exact backstory.
Super high end details, all embroidered. Measures 21 across the chest just
under the arm pits. When available this sold for $220+. $165 + shipping.
 *Now
 $155 + shipping*

 4) New, never worn, but tags removed *Castelli*, wicking synthetic,
LARGE. Understated white with black chest stripe and red details. It’s the
white one here: http://tinyurl.com/pxwsnll I measure 20” across chest
just under arm pits. $40 + shipping *Now $38 + shipping*

 5) New, all tags attached *Pear Izumi* Pursuit MEDIUM. It’s white with
black sleeves, like this one: http://tinyurl.com/mbhotd2 Specifically
designed to keep you cool in hot weather. Mesh side panels for air flow and
In-R-Cool™ fabric combine to keep you cool in the sweatiest of weather. I
was skeptical of fabrics like In-R-Cool™, which claim to cool the user
(read about it at the link above), until I got a pair of arm “coolers” in
this fabric last summer at the peak of the North Carolina heat. The effect
is AMAZING! I am 100% sold on this fabric for hot, sweaty riding and will
be purchasing this jersey in a size large. I bought this from the discount
rack at my LBS last fall and just now noticed that the attached tag says
it’s a factory “irregular”. I can’t find anying wrong with it and other
than being over tight on me, the fit seems perfectly normal. Retails for
 $85. $40 + shipping. *Now $38 + shipping*

 6) Used *“Bianchi Sportswear”* retro styled synthetic jersey. Light blue
with “BIANCHI” screened on white chest band. Styled after Bianchi team
jerseys of the 60's and 70's, but it's made from a wicking synthetic of
some sort. Marked “XXL”, but more like a US medium or Castelli large.
Measures 20” across chest just under arm pits. About 15 years ago I wore
this pretty consistently through a summer, then retired it when I outgrew
it. Been stored in a drawer since then. Shows use, with a couple of small
fabric pulls and a slight smudge or two, but still very wearable. *$20 +
 shipping*

 7) New, all tags attached, 2014 *Castelli *Free Aero bib shorts, size
MEDIUM, all black with small “Castelli” screened around band at bottom of
each leg. Some of the highest rated bibs out there, Castelli’s best pad,
understated looks. Purchased for $160 on end of season sale at
BikeTiresDirect (down from $200). A little too tight for me when I tried
on, but didn’t return in time. Doh! $150 + Shipping. *Now $145 +
 shipping*

 8) As-new *Canari *cycling shorts, size MEDIUM. Made in USA, 8 panels,
all black with simple, thin fleece-like pad. Purchased new in the early
2000’s (2003-ish) and never worn until last summer. Removed tags and wore
for one weekend when I’d left my “good shorts” in my car and left my car at
the car dealer for service. Fit me perfectly and love the matte fabric and
understated look, but after two rides I was wishing for the chi-chi 3-D
molded (some would say “diaper-like”) pad in my modern shorts. Tough to
find high quality shorts with minimal padding anymore. $20

[RBW] FS: Racks! Front rear / Tubus Bruce Gordon

2015-03-02 Thread Jack K
Hi,

I have several front and rear racks I'd like to sell, along with quite a
bit of other stuff as well. I was laid off effective last Friday, so
suddenly my desire to convert my excess bike bits into cash is much
increased! BTW, if anyone knows of a position for an experienced
operations research professional (extensive background in mathematical
optimization and simulation), please let me know!

Racks currently on offer (prices do not include shipping, which will be at
cost and can be determined after packing):

1) New, never installed, Bruce Gordon front lowrider rack, as seen here:
http://www.bgcycles.com/racks.html
Unopened bag of attachment hardware still taped to the rack. One of the
finest lowrider racks available, nicer construction than Tubus IMO. $185 on
BG's website or $145 from Jack's garage.

2) Used Bruce Gordon rear rack with all mounting hardware. Rack itself is
very good condition, but the generic mounting bolts are not stainless and
are no longer shiny. See it here:
http://www.bgcycles.com/new-page-14/
$208 from Bruce Gordon, say $130.

3) New Tubus Cosmo stainless rear rack (with low-ish rider mounts).
Installed on a Waterford touring bike I was building, then removed without
ever having a pannier mounted on it. Original version of the Cosmo, so
looks like this:
http://www.therandonneeshop.com/medi...ubus_Cosmo.jpg
http://www.therandonneeshop.com/media/238/Tubus_Cosmo.jpg
Included is the $13 Tubus Lower Rack Mounting Kit, which can be used to
position the rack slightly further back to increase clearance for heels or
disc brakes, or help on bikes with normal length chainstays. $210+$13=$223
is cheapest online price I see; say $170 for everything.

I'll be posting gobs more stuff in the near future. Next up will be a
collection of jerseys, including wool by Rapha and Castelli.

Cheers and safe riding!

[RBW] WTB: 8 cm Tallux or Technomic Deluxe

2015-01-28 Thread Jack K
Hey RBW-folk,

Doing some updates on my venerable B'stone RB-1 and in need of a new or
excellent condition 8 cm Nitto Tallux or, perhaps, Technomic Deluxe stem.
Thought I'd check the here before ordering a new one.

Note, I'm looking for something Nitto labels as an 8cm stem, so it'll
measure 8.5-ish cm center-to-center along the extension.

Cheers and safe riding,

Re: [RBW] Re: Dyno light recommendation

2014-09-26 Thread Jack K
Hey Andrew,

I've been waiting for more info, especially user feedback, to appear for
the Velogical dynamos. For a rider, like me, who uses lights only very
infrequently having zero drag during the 95% of the time no lights are
required seems a great tradeoff for (possibly) slightly increased drag
during the 5% of time lights are needed, plus a significant weight savings
all of the time. What are your impressions of the dynamo so far, in terms
of build quality, drag, light output vs speed? It's a very interesting time
in the history of bicycle lighting!

BTW, I recently bought a new battery light for use on my RB-1 -- a
NiteRider Lumina 700. It's so well made, compact, bright and lasts so long
on a charge that I'm fairly well stunned how much good battery lights have
evolved in the last 5 years. Still, I'd rather have an in-obtrusive dynamo
system for the rare times I'm out at night on this bike.

BTW2, any other RBW folk doing the Cycle NC Mountains to Coast tour next
week?

Cheers,

-Jack

For me, there is indeed a difference between dynamo and no dynamo. One of

[RBW] WTB: 8 cm Tallux or Technomic Deluxe

2014-09-14 Thread Jack K
Hey RBW folk,

I have need for an 8 cm Nitto Tallux or Technomic Deluxe stem in updating
the cockpit on my RB-1. Anyone have a nice used or un-needed new one of
these they're interested in selling?

Cheers and safe riding,

[RBW] WTB: Soma Highway 1 Bar -- Got One or Know Where to Get One?

2014-09-09 Thread Jack K
Hi RBW'ers,

I've scoured the interwebs looking for a Soma Highway 1 bar, but they apear
to be out of stock everywhere -- even on Soma's own web store. I'm looking
for silver, 26.0mm clamp and 42 or 44 cm width. Anyone have one or know of
a source that has one in stock and could ship relatively quickly? I'm
doing a multi-day tour in a couple of weeks (Cycle NC Mountains to Coast)
and want to update the cockpit on my venerable RB-1 prior to that.

Cheers and safe riding,

-Jack

[RBW] Re: Water Bottles Tested and Rated

2014-08-13 Thread Jack K
RBW'ers,

I added a CamelBak Podium to an order from Wiggle in the UK last winter and
that has become my favorite bottle. I particularly like that the screw-on
cap has a flow lock off setting, so the bottle can be transported with
little or no chance of leakage. This bottle from the UK is clear and
unmarked, other than a tasteful enough Camelak running around the bottle
just under the cap. I've looked (and looked) at LBS's and online shops in
the US to get a second bottle like that one, but all I can find are ones
splashed with various garish graphics. Anyone know of a US source for the
plain Podium?

That article seems to be about general purpose water bottles, like
something you'd carry around during the day to sip from. Kleen Kanteen is a
great bottle for that, but on the bike I'm sticking with the Podium.

Cheers!

I use the Camelbak insulated bottles, which keep drinks cool up to 15

you can lock out the bite valve until you need it, and they're a lot easier
to drink from than some of the other ones.

[RBW] FS: Bruce Gordon Front Lowrider Rack

2014-08-12 Thread Jack K
Hi,

Continuing to convert garage clutter into cash and, ultimately, into the
new bike (once I figure out what that should be). On offer today ... A
new, never installed, Bruce Gordon front lowrider rack, as seen here:
http://www.bgcycles.com/racks.html
I purchased this several years ago, but sold the Waterford touring rig it
was intended for before ever installing it. Since then it has been sitting
patiently in a box, wrapped in plastic. It is just as it arrived to me,
with no additional shopwear (other than the BG Cycles sticker getting a
bit crinkly for some reason) and the unopened bag of attachment hardware
still taped to the rack.

One of the finest lowrider racks available is yours for $185 on BG's
website or $145 from Jack's garage.

Ride safe,

-Jack
