Hi, I understand that I can use Google or other sources to research a
preferable route. But I was wondering if anyone in the group has done all
or part of this ride? I"d be curious about routes you chose, etc.

Thank you for any ideas.

[RBW] cycling attire for cold rain

2023-03-17 Thread Jim S.
Folks on this board might already have this information, but it was a
revelation to me.

It was 48 and heavily raining on, Tuesday I think, riding from Goleta to
Oxnard, CA. We (my son and I) were uncomfortably cold, with many miles to
go.

We came upon a surfing shop. I know nothing about surfing or scuba, but I
bought the socks, gloves, and a hat that surfers wear with their wetsuits.
Wow, what a game changer. We were instantly comfortable. For heavy rain in
cold weather, neoprene is great for cycling.

Thanks to all for your responses. The 1 to the 101 was really nice. There's
a real steep descent to the 101. Obviously not a problem going south. Had I
been traveling north, I think I would have been walking the bike up that
mountain.

[RBW] California bike route advice - Lompoc to Santa Barbara

2023-03-12 Thread Jim S.
Hi all,

This is a shot in the dark given the late notice, but tomorrow my son and I
are going to ride, as the title says, from Lompoc to Santa Barbara. I'm
wondering if anyone has an opinion on the best route?

Adventure Cycling has us taking California 1 south to Gaviota Beach, and
then following 1/101 along the ocean into Santa Barbara.

For whatever reason, Google Maps hates that route. It wants us taking 246
through Solvang and Santa Ynez.

I guess my primary concern is safety. Has anyone ridden either of these
lately?

Any thoughts appreciated.

thanks in advance.

[RBW] FS - Swift rolltop panniers, brown, waterproof waxed canvas $225 plus $25 shipping

2023-02-27 Thread Jim S.
These are lightly used. I don't think Swift makes canvas panniers anymore.
You can see from the photos that there's a black spot on the inward-facing
side of both panniers where the hook rests against the pannier. I'm not
sure how to avoid that.

But other than that blemish, there is very little wear.

[RBW] Rivendell video re fender installation

2022-02-15 Thread Jim S.
What a great video Riv made, back in 2011.

I have now installed SKS fenders probably 10 times. Every single time, I
watch this video. Maybe not the whole way through. But there's always some
little question I have, and I scroll to it in the video. Am I the only one
who looks at this multiple times?

[RBW] FS: Carradice Bagman quick-release brackets and adapters

2022-01-27 Thread Jim S.
I have three of these for sale. $50 each, shipping included.

You get both the bracket, and new adapters and big thick zipties that
attach the adapter to your saddle bag so that it fits the quick-release
bracket. These work great, if you have a saddle bag that you want to easily
switch among bikes, or if you have a saddle bag that you remove when you
reach your destination.

Here's a pretty good product description:

https://www.perennialcycle.com/bagman-quick-release-clamp.html

Please note: these are not Bagman Expeditions. That is, there is no metal
support piece that your saddle bag rests on. I think these are most useful
if you have a rear rack that your saddle bag can rest on.

Perhaps the difference doesn't show up in the photos? Are these Roadeos the
same cream as the headtube cream on other Rivs?

Thank you all for your helpful responses. Cyclist1959 (I'm sorry, I'm not

exactly the problem. I fiddled around with it - tried loosening the bolt,

[RBW] question re Dremel attachments

2021-05-13 Thread Jim S.
Hi all, I'm fixing to cut some fender stays and rack struts with my Dremel
rotary.

Wow, there are an incredible number of attachment options. It's rather
paralyzing.

I'd be grateful if you could recommend (1) a Dremel attachment for cutting
stays or struts, and (2) an attachment for smoothing out the sharp edges
after the cuts.

Thanks for any information.

[RBW] brake levers on albastache bars

2021-04-13 Thread Jim S.
Hi, I was hoping to tap in on this group's knowledge yet again. I am
mounting TRP road-brake levers on Albastache bars. My questions are as
follows:

1. Does anyone have a recommended location on the bar to mount them? I
understand that I should mount them wherever comfortable, but I'm hoping
someone can just tell me a reasonable place to mount them, and if it works
for most, it'll probably work for me.

2. Having identified the right place to mount them, how do I make sure that
they are exactly symmetrical, as I am OCD about handlebar issues?

3. These levers come with a plastic insert. I couldn't figure out what to
do with the inserts, as I can't even get the levers on to the bars if I
leave them in there. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks as always for any information.

2021-03-12 Thread Jim S.
So this is a large Fabio's Chest saddle bag or handlebar bag . I bought it,
and never mounted it on a bike. It's been in my basement on a shelf.

I don't believe he called it "Fabio's Chest" when I bought it. If it was
called that, it doesn't say it on the bag, (which I think might be better
than having a bag that says "Fabio's Chest.") It's a matter of taste.

The bag was made by Swift. It's huge, and does a lot of things.

So I splurged and bought this fancy, pricey bar tape. I'm embarrassed to

[RBW] question re Brooks leather bar ape

2021-03-06 Thread Jim S.
So I splurged and bought this fancy, pricey bar tape. I'm embarrassed to
admit what I paid for it, but now I've got it. Does anyone have any
experience with it? That is, do I install it the same way I install
Newbaum's, or is there some special method for this stuff? I just don't
want to screw it up as I don't see myself every buying another set of it.
I've got to get it right the first time.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

[RBW] Re: mounting sunrace shifter on stem

2021-02-10 Thread Jim S.
Thanks for the response! Yes, must have been a Will email.

I'm building up a Sam, with drop bars. I know I'll almost never shift to
the small derailer as the chainrings are 38 and 24. I was trying to figure
out if there's a benefit to the stem mounted front-derailer shifter and
drop bars. I suppose the primary benefit is freeing up handlebar space on
say, an albatross bar. I wonder if it makes sense to go this route with
drop bars? Any thoughts? The novelty alone appeals to me, but novelty is
not enough if it's otherwise pointless.

[RBW] question re spindle length of bottom brackets

2020-11-25 Thread Jim S.
Hi all,

I had a question about bottom-bracket spindle length.

I recently put a bike together, and I mostly succeeded. But I failed when I
got to the front derailer. I just can't get the bike to shift to the large
chain ring.

After a few days of fiddling around, (I read articles, I watched the Riv
videos, I watched the Calvin Jones' videos from Park Tools), I admitted
defeat and took the bicycle to my local bike shop.

He told me that I'm not setting it up wrong, it's not a matter of
adjustment - I either need a different bottom bracket, or a different front
derailer - he's not sure until he looks at it more carefully.

I took some solace in the apparent cause of the problem - it isn't my
mechanical ability - it was my parts selection!

My question: what determines the appropriate spindle length for a given
build. Is it the crankset? Is it the frame? Is it something else? I'm
trying to figure out where I went wrong.

(Maybe it's not the spindle length - maybe it's the front derailer I chose,
although I don't think so.)

Thanks for any information.

These have never been mounted on a bike. Just sitting on a shelf in my
basement.

Here are photos:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/GCQUHxVy3C69Tpy68

The tricky part is shipping them. It takes a big box to fit them. For the
box I found that fits them, it's going to be a rather pricey $35 to ship
via UPS.

So the price is $135 shipped. Unless you live in St. Louis and want to pick
them up. Then it'd be a more reasonable $100.

[RBW] How My Bike Collection Expands

2020-09-25 Thread Jim S.
I am luck to own several rivs, and then various family members have them as
well.

Looking back, I realize a frequent means of bike-fleet expansion is that I
change parts on one bike, and then I have an extra part - handlebar,
wheelset, crankset, whatever. And then I end up adding a frame to sop
up these extra parts. Taken to it's logical end, I suppose at some point I
could do a build based around some extra bar tape, although this hasn't
happened yet.

So in this way, I sort of backdoor my way into another bike.

Am I alone in this process?

[RBW] FS: Swift Industries Paloma Handlebar Bag and new KLICKfix for mounting

2020-09-24 Thread Jim S.
$135 shipped.

Here's a description of the product:

https://builtbyswift.com/shop/paloma-handlebar-bag/

Here are photos:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/9cCpw2PXkrdjJmTv6

Condition is good to very good. It looks like these are $175 new, and the
Klickfix is $27 new.

The Klickfix is included in the $135 price. I characterize the Klickfix as
new because I have never mounted it on a bike or even taken it out of its
box. Concededly, the box is a bit worn.

[RBW] FS: Crust Towel Rack handlebars

2020-07-16 Thread Jim S.
These are silver, 675 mm wide.

These are in very good condition, but they are not new.

There are a couple of scratches on one of them - presumably you'll cover
these with tape, but still, they are there. I tried to highlight the
scratches in the photos.

Here's photos:

https://photos.google.com/album/AF1QipNGIiVTqnYIXWa_4GUQu2tOY1tTMxIBFjcYBajn

Here'a a link to product description:

https://www.crustbikes.com/products/wide-load-bar/

Price is $110, shipped. (Shipping them is a bit of a pain due to size.)

[RBW] Re: Your Favorite Adhesive for Riv Cork Grips???

2020-07-15 Thread Jim S.
John, I just use a strip length-wise under the grip. You could try one on
the top and one on the bottom, if one strip alone isn't tight enough. I
can't figure out why, but the length of the strip matters. A longer strip
seems to hold it in place more than a shorter one, but I"ve had it where if
I make the strip too long, I can't get the grip on to the bar. So there's a
sweet spot.

[RBW] Re: Your Favorite Adhesive for Riv Cork Grips???

2020-07-15 Thread Jim S.
John, I've had success with a strip of newbaum's tape. No glue, no nothing
else. If you don't have enough tape, they'll rotate. If you use too much
tape, you can't get the grips on. But you'll figure out an amount that
holds the grips in place. Then you can remove the grips later without
needing a blow torch.

[RBW] FS: Nittany Mountain Works bags, Jones Bar and Manything

2020-06-25 Thread Jim S.
I am selling two bags from Nittany Mountain Works as a set, because they
generally match.

The bags are a Jones Bar Bag, and a Manything Bag. Here's a link to their
descriptions: https://nittanymountainworks.com/collections/bike-bags/bike

A nice thing about the Manything Bag - it has a small drainage hole in the
bottom so you don't end up with a puddle in your bag if it rains.

Please note that this Jones Bar bag did not come with the elastic on top,
which is pictured in the bag for sale on the Nittany Mountain Works website.

Neither of these bags has ever been used - I bought a Jones Bar and then
never installed it on a bike, so the bags have sat, unused, which is a
waste.

Their color is purple - but not a dark purple. Not lavender either. I'd say
a medium purple. This is neither good nor bad, I just don't want the buyer
surprised.

Each bag comes with 4 pieces of purple velcro, so there are many mounting
options.

The Jones Bar Bag is $85 new. The Manything bag is $32 new.

I'm selling the the pair for $95, including shipping.

2020-04-21 Thread Jim S.
I see Riv sells the Continental basketball tire at 650b x 32, and that tire
is surely a good one, but I wonder if there are any other roadish tires
availble in 650b x 32 - 35 range for that small Roadini.

Panaraer Nifty Swifty's would be perfect, but they don't seem to be
available anymore.

I know this is a first-world problem, but tan sidewalls look a little
nicer to me than the all-black basketball tires.

[RBW] FS: Swift Bags

2020-04-19 Thread Jim S.
*1. Swift Ozette Randonneur Bag - tall, black, and the Velo Orange rack
with decaleur to which to mount it. *

Bag is $280 new, rack is $120 new. But mine are not new. I applied a patch
to the underside of the bag where it contacts the rack. It is unobtrusive,
but it's there. And I bent the tab on the rack to fit my bike. It can be
bent to fit your bike, but still once it's bent, it's not new.

Price is $120 plus $10 shipping for the whole kit and caboodle. Here are
photos:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/aYDL1zfxA69vDvdt9

*2. Set of two Swift Short-Stack Panniers, olive and coyote. *

I mount the on front low riders, but they could also be mounted on a rear
rack. Good condition.

Here's a product description:
https://www.evo.com/outlet/panniers/swift-industries-short-stack-set-of-two.
I don't think Swift makes these anymore.

Here are photos:

https://photos.app.goo.gl/K7dU1vaXTU21SftE6

Price is $150 plus $10 shipping for the bags sold as a set - that is, you
get both bags for the price.

[RBW] Re: St. Joe's, MI to Chicago route

2020-04-19 Thread Jim S.
I rode part of this route, Evanston to Michigan City, en route to South
Bend, way back in 1991! I can't believe it's been that long.

(I had a black and orange Cannondale mountain bike - I could have purchased
a Bridgestone and I have no idea why I didn't. I thought Cannondales were
so cool when I was 20.)

Were I to undertake this ride today, I'd just use the google map route for
bicycle. I just reviewed the suggested route. It's not awful. And there's
some nice parts, like the ride through Indiana Dunes.

The most direct route would be through Gary, which I think is probably
undesirable. I still remember my ride through Gary - I had no maps. I went
through Gary because I was navigating by following the lake. There were
four ferocious junkyard dogs that came barreling at me from various
directions as I made my way through town. For those terrifying moments, I
became a very strong rider.
