Would a better one (as yours) be silent?

That sounds fantastic, Jeffrey.

While attending University of Oregon, we explored the eastern OR /

[RBW] FS: Phil cassette hub+wheel, tandem/145mm (HubbuHubbuH)

2023-05-25 Thread Joe Bunik
Hello Riv Duos

Passing along a nice wheel/hub combo I opted into for a rough-stuff
bike project, but plans have since shifted - this is a Phil cassette
hub for use with a 145mm OLN tandem (w/ NDS threading for drum or
adapters). Re-spacing is possible but would require axle replacement
from Phil.

Laced up to a 559 / 36h Sun Rhynolite rim, I'm willing to de-lace and
cover the shipping on just the hub for $200 (alternatively, $200+CONUS
shipping your side for the entire wheel / OBO - let's talk!)

Re: [RBW] I want to see your Legolases

2022-11-01 Thread Joe Bunik
Nikko,

Here's mine from back in its glory days - I really should put some
wrench time into getting back into a serviceable shape.

https://flic.kr/p/z8k1NT

V-brakes might be what it takes for it to win me back but, TBH - I've
never been completely happy with the tire clearances / rubber
selections I've made, either - 700x42 is the max but x38 with knobs is
more realistic.

Such a beautiful/great riding/lightweight frame otherwise! Just need
to acknowledge that it's a cross bike before anything else, not really
the end-all/be-all dirt banger.

[RBW] WTB/ISO: Phil Wood 127.5mm bottom bracket

2022-08-17 Thread Joe Bunik
Inquiring of you venerable [RBW] list members if anyone might have an
idle Phil bb... I'm seeking the 127.5mm width, which back in Pre Times
often used with Sugino AT triple setups.

As trade fodder, I have several other Phil widths to offer you - or
please just float me your shipped price! Thanks

Re: [RBW] Re: Rebuild kit for VP VIce pedals?

2021-05-26 Thread Joe Bunik
I do have one of the VP rebuild kits squirreled away, as I've got
*multiple* pairs of their platforms in regular usage. I'll have to dig
it out... do you think we should investigate how to reverse-engineer
the contents of the kit? I recall multiple, small-scale sealed
bearings.

Regrettably, I just pulled maybe my oldest and/or heaviest-usage set
from my Jones 29 when I finally determined they were the source of all
the clicking and creaking I'd been plagued by!!!

I kind of hate that pedals are "consumables".

As a 4-bolt 104mm fan, all I can say is... 勞

Pics / links would definitely help visualize this - are you saying the

typically seen on other cranks?

I am both excited to learn of the existence of a 48t / 104 as well as the

[RBW] WTB / WTT: 10cm Nitto DirtDrop (MT-10) / 25.4 clamp

2020-09-21 Thread Joe Bunik
hi gang

I'm seeking one of the Nitto DirtDrop riser stems, preferably the
longer 10cm extension.

There seem to have been many variants on this classic, but I'm
definitely looking for the "Riv"-style / long quill riser. But
most crucially, I want the 25.4 bar clamp size.

Apparently I've collected many many stems, but somehow the ideal one
just isn't in stock here (or at RBW!).

Please contact me off-list at jbu...@gmail.com

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] List Function Update - Replying directly issues

2020-09-14 Thread Joe Bunik
Hi Jim

It might be worth checking (maybe just for us email-client users),
whether there's an option for/against forcing the "Reply-To:
rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com" onto outgoing messages.

By contrast, the [BOB] list seems to preserve the sender's address as
the Reply-To.

A small difference, but it's always made it a chore of digging into
and finding the sender's address manually overriding that, in the
email compose step.

Beyond the pandemic, failure politics, economic downturn, schools
starting up virtually, devastating fires, and ongoing brutality
against black and brown people -- now we have environmental
devastation. I'm having an incredibly hard time seeing light at the
end of this tunnel.

We cannot simply just ride the bikes to escape any longer; all of the
best places are now under mandatory closure -- or have already burned
over. The evacuation maps look like cue sheets for all my favorite
places in the west.

We must begin making amends now, before a whole world is lost to
climate disaster.

[RBW] WTB: Chris King 1" headset misc. bits

2020-06-09 Thread Joe Bunik
Hi gang,

Stirring the pot a little bit with some of my project frames/forks and
was wondering if any of you might be able to assist me with a few
small Chris King headset bits.

Any of these could help facilitate a fork-swap scenario I am
contemplating, and all involve 1" steerers, FWIW.

1) *SILVER* 1" threadless upper race, and (if you have one) the proper
top-cap for fitting to a 1" fork (1-1/8" have a lip + oversize O.D. /
also don't play well with 1" spacers).

and/or,

2) *BLACK* 1" threaded (2Nut) upper race and the matching top lock-nut.

alternatively,

3) Silver (or any color...), 1" threaded *GRIP-NUT* headset, complete.

4) Chris King 1" crown race.

Thanks!!!

[RBW] FS: nicer, longer crankarms

2020-04-14 Thread Joe Bunik
hi gang,

Finally getting back into the personal goals phase of this quarantine
period - rummaging through the garage of course being one of those ;-P

Here are a couple sets of nice square-taper arms in a longer length. I
tried these awhile back but didn't really take to them. No rings, but
I can likely set you up with something as needed.

- Dura Ace FC-7402 / 177.5mm arm length. 130mm double. Some clear
anodization wear and logo-fade, but certainly nothing catastrophic.
$85 shipped CONUS

- Takagi Tourney XC / 180mm arm length. 110/74mm triple. Minor scuffs
but again not bad at all. These were off a 1st gen Stumpjumper, back
before Shimano had a full-blown MTB group (Takagi was a component
maker but in the Shimano family, owned by an uncle???). $65 shipped
CONUS.

Let me know if you're interested or have any questions.

Follow-on thought question :

Does/did Riv use the same seat-lug (the "basic hardware/bolt-nut") -
for both 27.2 **and** 26.8 seatpost-sized frames? Perhaps that's the
key to the problem, that the Nitto hanger is incompatible on 26.8
frames using this lug?

Re: [RBW] Re: Advice Needed: Best Remedy for a Slipping Hunqapillar Seatpost

2020-02-19 Thread Joe Bunik
I believe one **possible source** of this issue **IS** the Nitto cable
hanger itself --

On many Riv frames it fits "just fine" between the ears of the seatlug
-- but, on some, when you tighten down the post -- it actually catches
between the ears and cams the tube back open just enough to cause the
seatpost to slip.

I agree that while canti frames should include an integrated cable
stop, the rise of V-brakes makes the proper design treatment
ambiguous!

Re: [RBW] Re: The Stem Chronicles: Will this get me injured?

2020-01-23 Thread Joe Bunik
The problem is with the location where the expander-bolt now falls
within the steerer -- IF it's in the threaded section, its force is
creating a stress riser which gets amplified every time you hit bump.

One of the Bruce Gordon frames I salvaged had this fate befall it,
clearly a too-high stem had tore through the steerer. Somebody
probably regretted that immediately!

Thanks Tom for that link to Garbaruk - hadn't heard of them, and they
have some interesting niche rings (like direct-mount N-W for XTR

Here's a USA-based company which has their own spin on things - I
don't know quite how I feel about a sharktooth profile!

[RBW] WTB: Middleburn square-taper crank...

2019-10-04 Thread Joe Bunik
Hi gang,

I am giving serious consideration to a rather exotic solution for a
specific build I have in mind. But, before I order up a new set I
thought it would be worth a try / fishing in your bins (also, I'm
totally open to any correctve feedback if I'm heading down a
rabbit-hole!).

Specifically what I'm looking for exactly:
- Middleburn RS7 square-taper (spidered) crank
- 165mm length!
- Black!
- 104bcd / 4-bolt spider -OR- MB N-W 32t ring.

plastic bezel is cracked). I haven't taken it apart but it would work

Hi gang

Piled up a small midden of trinkets that have accumulated around here,

Single item prices do NOT include shipping (+$7 CONUS), BUT if you go
for multiple items I'll cover it. Photo at this url:

- Nitto R50 saddlebag supports / Q/R handles (2x):
New / like-new. I purchased thinking how great it would be to have a
2x2 bag/bike swapable set up; turns out I really don't like
saddlebags! Only used one of them briefly. $75/ea OR $140 for both.

- Shimano BES pair:
Used, mismatched pair. Rear (right) shifter has a GLITCH -- the d-ring
DOES NOT turn fully to the indexed position, "seems jammed" (also
plastic bezel is cracked). I have not taken it apart, but should work
for a friction-only setup. $35

derailers. $30

New, purchased with the intent of adding triple cages to my Jones -
however, the P-clamps don't constrict far enough for my truss fork (I
should have gotten seatstay, not fork blade size!). $30

[RBW] RBW at 25: The Fellowship of the Rigs

2019-07-08 Thread Joe Bunik
Chaingang,

Coming up Real Soon Now is the RBW25 weekend at Samuel Taylor State Park -

Fri, Jul 19, 2019, 2pm Sun, Jul 21, 2019, 12pm PDT
Devil's Gulch Group Site 1&2
http://rbwxxv.eventbrite.com

- And while we can thank Justin in Oakland for laying the groundwork
of the event (read: HE RESERVED US THE GROUP SITES), it's going to be
up to each of us to make it happen!

So: Who is planning to attend? What level of riding are you hoping
for? What ideas or adventures would you like to have?

Speaking for myself, I can only make it over for Friday (will stay
over in camp) and Saturday riding. I'd like to make a ride from camp
around the Pine Mountain Loop, and then either return to camp via
BoFax / Bolinas Ridge OR, down into Fairfax via Repack.

I think it'll be "each-their-own" in terms of food, but it might also
be fun/nice to bring something to share for (either) evening?

Let's hear some enthusiasm and make this happen!

[RBW] FS: Shimano 11sp cassette, XT 11-42

2019-05-25 Thread Joe Bunik
Hi gang

Further adventures in gear tinkering have left me with an extra
cassette, an M8000 Deore XT 11-42t in good, clean condition (although
the lockring has some scuffage). This will fit onto standard "8/9/10"
era freehubs.

Give or take on the philosophical question of an 11t cog, I really do
like the overall spread on these in modern 1x11 speed setups. I've run
this cassette interchangeably on both Sram Apex-1 and
Shimano-drivetrained bikes. But, being in a situation of "5 (11sp)
cassettes, 3 wheels" here, one of these extras should probably go.
Until I need it back ;-)

$55 shipped CONUS, just LMK - thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Plus Tires for GBW

2019-05-09 Thread Joe Bunik
Along the lines of 29+ tires for a GBW, I've got a (NIB) pair which
need to move along; a set of difficult-to-obtain 29 x 2.25 "XC/CG"
*GUMWALL* knobbies, from Fairweather x Panaracer (Blue Lug).

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ joe_bunik/45439313474

Unfortunately, they're just not going to fit onto any of my builds.

5880 ¥ each originally, asking $85 + shipping.

[RBW] WTB: 1" Paul Funky Monkey + cable splitters

2019-03-18 Thread Joe Bunik
Hey chaingang,

Am looking for a couple bits of hardware to entertain ideas for a
couple project/s. Maybe you have these languishing in your box? Am
considering the oft-attempted "multiple cockpit"/rinko-able build…

- Paul Components Funky Monkey front cable hanger (black), for 1"
threadless steerer.

- Derailler / brake cable splitter kit (black, preferred). Bonus
points for the Bruce Gordon version, but also interested in any others
e.g. Co-Motion, S+S, etc.

Thanks!!!

Is it truly her bike (i.e. does she experience the pride-of-ownership,
turn her own wrench, change her flats etc.) - does she care?

Or - if YOU see yourself as the familial "Caretaker to the Bikes",
does it matter to **YOU** that your wife has a bike nicer than your
own?

Alternatively if you are interested in a Bruce Gordon touring rack, let me know.

Thanks

Re: [RBW] Re: Seeking recommendations for transporting multiple bikes in minivan

2018-11-27 Thread Joe Bunik
Lynne,

Having a similar need, I fabricated a solution that would work for our
Mazda 5 micro-van. Using Thule truck bed fork mounts and a sheet of
plywood, I made a removable carrier that I could secure 2 full-size
bikes with room for a 3rd if you pull the back wheel (or if it's a
kiddo bike). Given my 90cm PBH, I needed to pull the saddle but it all
fit together just perfectly.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/joe_bunik/16677207181

Then, you only need to your strap the 3rd passenger onto the roof rack.

[RBW] FS: 55cm Bridgestone MB-2 + Bruce Gordon HMF

2018-11-17 Thread Joe Bunik
https://www.flickr.com/photos/joe_bunik/albums/72157703630407114

Up for offer is a nice, largest-size 1989 MB-2 frame with a (NOS)
Bruce Gordon "Rock 'N Road Expedition" 559 fork, and paired up with a
BG HMF rack. These MB's are great climbers, and with the integrated
front rack would make for an excellent adventure bike.

Frame is in good condition, no dents or damage but some paint and
decal wear. Fork has minor wear and tear from a lifetime of living in
a box of forks. Among unicrowns, the Gordon forks have an excellent
bend and are very well made. Forged plate-dropouts, with HMF-specific
rack bosses up top plus front/rear eyelets at the drops. The
drive-side top rail of the rack has been expertly repaired by an
experienced rack-builder (a new piece of tubing was internally
sleeved-in), paint retouched w/ rattle-can black.

Asking $425 + actual Bikeflights shipping; please let me know if you
are interested or have any questions.

Thanks for looking

Re: [RBW] Surprise New Bike Day

2018-11-07 Thread Joe Bunik
Tony,

That's a great score and takes me back to the early 2000's when I was
living in Cambridge / Somerville -- Mike's work was hugely influential
on me in my nascent bike-nerd years. This bike still epitomizes
everything a BOB-ish townie should be. I'm still searching for this
white whale!

Another important dude from that time was a mechanic(?) at the
Broadway Bicycle Schoo, "Smasher" who preached the wonders of
rebuilding the old Raleigh 3-speeds which littered the curbs of Boston
every trash day. Anyone remember his web pages?

[RBW] FS: vintage baby mixte

2018-11-01 Thread Joe Bunik
https://www.flickr.com/photos/joe_bunik/albums/72157701548579871

Gang,

I picked this up a few short years ago thinking I'd set it up for
either/both of my kids -- dang if they didn't grow quicker than I
could turn a wrench!

This is the cutest little frame I've ever seen… it was billed to me as
NOS and still appears to never have been built-out. It's supposedly
French, possibly Gitane? Seems meant for a nominal/obscure 22" wheel
size, but my plan was to fit 20" BMX wheels to it -- which it has good
clearances for.

Lugged, kickstand plate, chainguard mounts, fender and generator
bosses, pump peg -- it's almost as if Alex Singer and Betty Foy had a
child, ha!

I'm asking $150 (OBO) and will split the actual bikeflights shipping with you.

[RBW] FS: Tektro / Avid SpeedDial levers

2018-10-21 Thread Joe Bunik
Tried and liked all these levers but must try to purge some of this
extra stock around here…

Up for grabs are one set of Avid 'SpeedDial 7', and two pairs of the
very-similar (but not quick-adjusting) Tektro MT3.0 -- one set silver,
the other black.

https://www.flickr.com/gp/joe_bunik/sje5k5
https://www.flickr.com/gp/joe_bunik/74u0nh

Say $15 for either of the Tekrtro and $25 for the SpeedDials, +$7
shipping. Or have 'em all for $60 shipped!

Thanks

[RBW] FS / take any offers: Jim Blackburn racks

2018-10-21 Thread Joe Bunik
hi BOBs

Acquired along with the Gordon Factory 2nds Rack Mountain were several
old-style "Jim Blackburn" rear racks -- some variations amongst,
possibly Bruce-modifications for rapid prototyping.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/joe_bunik/sets/72157674742384888

Would like them gone -- just let me know any rack(s) you want and I'll
send 'em your way. Please spare me the measure-and-fit questions ;-)
but, I am happy to snap a shot or two of any specific rack if you are
extra curious.

So, any offer from $0 to $100 works, for however many I can get into a
box -- certainly "several" should nest. Shipping for rack/s in my
experience runs right about +$20/large box so we'll call it that.

Just LMK.

Bunch,

I've tried / liked / tried-to-like all of these, but more or less
figured out what works best for me at this point. These are all good,
if not great pedals however -- the problem is they are also taking up
valuable garage space at this point.

How about $20 (shipped CONUS) for any of the MKS, and $25 for the

set of MKS Sylvan Tracks (*slightly mismatchy: I had 2 orphan

$33.33 shipped (CONUS) to you? LMK if you're interested, I would like
