[RBW] Re: WTPF - Nitto Noodle, Albastache, and 70mm Tallux stem

2024-01-02 Thread Jon Craig (Vendraen)
I am really, really sorry folks! Some very bad life stuff, and then the
holidays happened and I honestly just dropped the ball on this. :( It's
my fault, I should have done better. I'll post again in a few days and
open this stuff back up to takers. Please forgive my dropping the ball.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB new Rivendell saddle or other saddle with proper bag loops

2023-12-15 Thread Jon Craig (Vendraen)
Eh, I don't think the loops on the Acorn Large Saddlebag will reach my
rails. :(

I have the old, 2016-era Rivendell stock saddle with the weird ovular loop
on the back; it's not wide enough to use as loops for this bag (or maybe
any bag) and it also blocks things.

[RBW] WTB new Rivendell saddle or other saddle with proper bag loops

2023-12-15 Thread Jon Craig (Vendraen)
Looking for a cheap saddle with proper bag loops - the new Rivendell one or
perhaps one of the V-O ones that have loops. Hopefully someone's got a
saddle they don't use or didn't work for their body that they'll let go

[RBW] Re: Did anyone get one of the new Acorn Bags yesterday?

2023-12-13 Thread Jon Craig (Vendraen)
My wife and I each have a "Boxy Rando" bag from back in 2016, during the
time when they used snaps and didn't put their logo patch on the bags. We
love those bags, and it was time for me to get a bag for the back of my
bike, instead of using my Ortlieb panniers. So I waited for the Large
Saddlebag to become available and bought one. It arrives today! I'm
exited.

Re: [RBW] Using Your Rivendell Vs. Being Precious: A Spectrum

2023-12-08 Thread Jon Craig (Vendraen)
Man just USE your bikes! I read this blog post a while ago and was like
"WTF, people will drop a minimum of 2.5k on a bike and not ride it!?!? -
must be NICE to have that kind of cash!"

Bikes are meant to be ridden.  Rivendells will stand up to just that;
they're very much made for it.

And seriously, if you can afford to have a Rivendell to not use it...
share? :D

2023-11-16 Thread Jon Craig (Vendraen)
Eh, I'm really thinking of going back to a drop bar of some sort - there's
1000 of them out there, and it seems ones with shallower drops and
mid to high flare are going to make the drops usable. And I probably want
something with a longer ramp for even more position variability. There are
just. so. many. bars. now.

[RBW] YAHT (Yet Another Handlebar Thread) :D

2023-11-16 Thread Jon Craig (Vendraen)
I have a 2016 Sam, from the batch of completes that year. I love the bike,
and now that I'm riding a lot more (my wife was gifted with being able to
ride again after not being able to for years; she has a '16 Sam too), I
swapped bars from the stock (Nitto Noodle) to an Albastache.

The Noodle was only giving me ONE hand position, on the hoods. The drops
didn't feel usable to me and the flats are just too narrow for my comfort.
The hoods position was putting a lot of pressure on the meaty part of my
hands behind the thumbs.

The 'Stache fixes that and gives me a lot of hand positions - on the
"hoods" (but it's a big flat on the 'Stache of course), behind them, and
pretty much all along the rest of the bar. I like it, but...

I do miss the hand position that only comes from having a drop bar on being
on those hoods in that orientation; I just need one that will put them in a
spot that doesn't put all the weight on the meaty-hand-part behind the
thumbs.

I have to admit I also miss how the bike looks with a drop bar. O_o I
dunno, I guess the bike just "wants" that look, to me.

I'd also like to not run the shifters as barend shifters... So I'd go
thumbie or some type of (S DON'T TELL GRANT) brifter.

The other issue I don't have access to the funds that some others around
here seem to. :) These bikes were EXPENSIVE to us ($2,600 a pop and we've
added front and rear racks, fenders, etc.)

Ideas, comments, questions, help, etc, etc? I'm sure lots around here have
Sams and have done this handlebar/cockpit rodeo lots of times!

[RBW] Bag options on an Albastache bar?

2023-11-09 Thread Jon Craig (Vendraen)
So I'm wondering what my options are for bags on an Albastache setup. I
currently have a Mark's rack with an Acorn Bags boxy Random, but I'd rather
run something like a Ron's Bikes Fabio's Chest. Has anyone done this? Is it
possible?!?!? :)

[RBW] Acorn Bags (acornbags.com) boxy rando bags!

2016-07-13 Thread Jon Craig

I'm surprised these haven't been mentioned here (or at least I haven't SEEN
them mentioned!) - but Acorn Bags are very, very nice! We just got ours in
today and they look very, very nice. The new colors seem almost chosen to
go well with the current Sam production colors. I got "Gray" for mine, and
she got "Dark Olive" for hers. They may be hard to get (handmade by a
husband/wife team, so production is limited) but it seems worth the trouble
(and cost).

So, buying a Sam for me and a Sam for the wife, before selling Our Other
Bikes(tm) was painful financially, but Sams are available when they're
available, and they were at A1 (our local Riv dealer, thankfully we have

But now our old bikes need sold - and the only place I know of to list them
is Craigslist, which I've done. They're listed in our local CL, the next

Is there another place to sell bikes online? I mean other than eBay of

[RBW] Re: Sam with 'staches?

2016-06-24 Thread Jon Craig
Thanks for the detailed answer! (And yes, we're both LOVING our Sams!
Truly amazing bikes.)

The Albastache looks good and I'm really thinking about it. It would be
just the bar for me, since I have a Samcomplete, which has barend shifters
that will go in the barend position on that bar. But I still wonder about
moving them to the stem or downtube and putting some nice grips on instead.

[RBW] Re: A bit offtopic discussion of RivBike's shipping times

2016-06-24 Thread Jon Craig
"What he said" + more.:

As the co-owner of a small business (a ton smaller than Rivendell!) I read
this thread with a little horror. I know a lot of non-business owners
think owning a business is some magic that makes shipping cheap; some
"consumers" even believe shipping is FREE if you own a business. It's not
true. Until you get to a scale a little above Rivendell's size, you don't
get ANY discounts on shipping. And until you get way, way, way bigger than
Rivendell is or ever will be (and bigger than it WANTS to be) ...
shipping's still "expensive."

"Free shipping" is an illusion. It's not free; it's just bundled into
prices. Amazon and it's ilk (mostly just Amazon) has really effed things
up for anyone smaller.

As far as UPS vs. USPS...I can't understand why UPS still exists. USPS
ships cheaper AND faster. That's right - not only is shipping an item via
USPS cheaper...it will also arrive DAYS SOONER than if you'd shipped it
UPS. UPS is just riding on the days of them being the only choice. Yes,
UPS's tracking is a lot better, but in the end, tracking's cool - but what
really matters is how much it costs to ship and when it will get there -
and the answers for those questions with USPS will always be "less" and
"sooner."

That's good - but again - I have a huge credit at a LBS so anything from

2016-06-23 Thread Jon Craig
Eh, it wasn't the best decision we've ever made. But, Sams are available
in the quantities they're available in, and basically only once a year.

Bicycling together is an important fun/bonding activity for my wife and
myself, and our prior bikes were not proving to be the fun, carefree
experience we'd wanted. So we did this. It is painful, especially since
the prior bikes sit unsold, and they're painfully valuable too.

But, you only live once, and not for that long - and this was important to
us, so it's done. )

Though apparently I'm in a different income bracket than the rest of the

[RBW] Re: New Sam-haver with rack questions!

2016-06-23 Thread Jon Craig
Well that was a disaster. :D

Yeah, the VO constructeur front rack won't work on a Sam, at least not for
someone with my level of skills (admittedly next to nil!)

The shape of the tang just doesn't work. It's got that down-bend in it,
that when placed through the brake caliper, causes the whole thing to push
down and rub on the tire. Not to mention you can't really insert it
through far enough because of the aforementioned down-bend.

Luckily I decided to dry-fit it before removing the hang tag and little
bundle of hardware, so returning it was easy enough.

I'll just use the rear rack for now, and perhaps wait until a Mark's rack
doesn't seem expensive.

Eh, it was either this or wait a long time, as like I said, I have a
sizable credit at one of my LBS's - so I can get whatever I want for "free"
but it has to be something QBP has, which basically means the only thing
that really suits is the VO constructeur.

I guess I'll see how it all fits when the rack arrives. If there's any
violence/etc required I'll give up and wait I suppose. I don't have the
skills or the tools to modify steel!

Yeah that's pretty dry. Makes things feel not-as-bad though 100 is still
fairly nasty.

Karachi... Pakistan? Seems like that would be a hell hole for lots more
reasons than just the climate.

It's dry in NM though isn't it?

(I'm from California originally and have been to the Mojave desert often.
110 there isn't as bad as 90 is here - humidity sucks!)

[RBW] General Sam praise, etc...

2016-06-21 Thread Jon Craig
So I know I'm basically preaching to the choir here and there's nothing I
can or will say that hasn't been said, but I figure the Sam and Rivendell
in general can always use more voices saying "THESE ARE GOOD BIKES AND
PEOPLE SHOULD LOOK AT THEM AND PROBABLY BUY
THEM!onetwothree!!!"

(And yes I know I should have posted this BEFORE I posted my rack question
a week ago, but ... oh well!)

Anyway, I've been aware of Rivendell for a long time - sometime before Sam
existed? Bombabil was still a thing I believe. Don't remember how I found
Riv, but the name drew me first, as I'm a huge Tolkien fan.

I've had a lot of bikes over the years, but this (2016, 55 cm, blue,
ndle) Sam is my first Riv. I've got 2 very, very good (and
very different) LBSs here in Lafayette, IN but neither are Riv dealers, and
I could never really fathom spending $3,000 on a bike I couldn't see,
touch, and ride first.

Country Bike Shop over in Ohio was a thing for a while, and my wife and I
had planned to go over there (it's not a super long drive) and check out
Rivs but that never happened and now they shut down.

But last year I noticed that Riv authorized another group of dealers and
one is A1 Cyclery in Indianapolis! That's only 55 miles! Cool! So I
finally was able to see Rivs in person late last year.

I didn't buy one, because my wife and I got wowed by Some Other Bikes at
one of the LBSs here and we bought those.

But my brain and soul were NOT jiving with that bike, and so... I bought a
Sam. We went back about 4 days after getting mine, with my wife's carbon
bike so she could test ride her bike and a Sam back-to-back (she needs that
instant back-to-back comparison), and we left with Sam #2. :D

Anyway, I was thrilled, happy, and just ... so freekin happy ... that
everything I'd read about Rivendell bikes over the years, and Sam
specifically, were actually totally true. It really does ride perfectly,
feels great, and just is the bike I've wanted for a couple decades.

I've been work-commuting on my Sam as weather allows and it's been
awesome. And my wife and I ride together in the afternoons. She has more
trouble getting hers dialed it but it's something we're used to. She has
chronic pain (fibro) and so things aren't as simple for her. But she loves
her Sam too!

Now we just need to find buyers for our previous bikes, as sitting on
another $5,000 worth of bikes is a little painful!

[RBW] Re: How hot is your town?

It's been relatively hot here in Lafayette, IN.

Upper 80s to low or mid 90s, with heat indices/"real feels" into the high
90s and even lower 100s. A couple days so far with real temps nearing
100. And it's not even July yet!

The reason I don't have any specifics is that I am literally trying to
compile a list of

*all the front racks that fit without bodging, and that are cheaper than
Nitto.*$5,200 is a lot of money; our budget is blown for a while, so this
won't be a soon-purchase. I just want to know what works. All of them.

[RBW] Re: New Sam-haver with rack questions!

2016-06-17 Thread Jon Craig
Any front rack that fits easily without a lot of bodging would be fine.

I usually would want silver, but since my rear rack is a spare Trek that I
had around (which is black), a black front rack would balance it out.

As far as size, anything! I'm really just trying to gather a list of what
fits, for later purchase.

A lot of stuff for instance requires using the fork crown hole. Can't, as
it's used on the Sam (by the brake).

[RBW] New Sam-haver with rack questions!

2016-06-17 Thread Jon Craig

So, last Saturday I finally bought a Sam (55, blue, noodle)! (BTW A1
Cyclery in Indianapolis rocks!) (And truth be told, I'm now a 2-Sam
household as on Wednesday we went back and my wife got one too - 51,
orange, noodle. :D )

Anyway - I had an old Trek rear rack so I black-nailpolished the Trek logos
and put it on - it fits great!

A front rack I do not have, and I'm wondering what ones fit well on Sam
without a lot of bodging. NIttos, yeah, they're gorgeous, but they're also
bordering on blasphemously expensive so I'm looking for lower cost options.

Since someone will demand it, I've attached a pic of my Sam sitting in my
office as I type this.
