Re: [RBW] New Bike Day - Lugged Susie

2024-06-11 Thread Matthew Williams
Can someone who’s ridden both bikes tell me: what’s the difference, between the
Susie and the Appaloosa? I’d like to start riding more dirt and trails—but no
crazy fast stuff or jumps—and I’m wondering if I should get a Susie or just
stick with my Appaloosa.

Does the Susie have better clearance, geometry, and/or strength to make it a
better choice for dirt and trails? Or is the Susie similar enough to the
Appaloosa that I won’t notice the difference?

Re: [RBW] Re: Upright / Relaxed / Swept-Back - Style of Riding

2024-05-09 Thread Matthew Rebmann
***Reposting with a correction***
A few things to keep in mind:

-Riding in an upright position will recruit different muscles in your legs
and butt, you may feel it to be a bit harder to ride fast in this position.
You will also catch more wind which can slow you down a bit.
-You should keep in mind the steering axis. If your stem is too short, you
can create overly "whippy" steering. Making sure your stem is long enough
will resolve that issue.
-You'll also likely want a wider saddle.

I have a "drop bar" Surly Midnight Special. It's a great bike but I'm not
currently in love with the position even though my handlebars are mounted
higher than my seat. I find that my "golfers elbow" is aggravated by the
hand position and I rarely use the drops. I'm also not a racer, I don't
enjoy super aggressive position in which is why I have my bars mounted
higher than my saddle. I acquired a Long Haul Trucker that is a small for
me if I built it with drop bars (albatross bars,) but it's absolutely
perfect as a swept back build. I'm in a fully upright position on it and I
use it as my sometimes work-commuter, bop around town bike. I feel I have
the best viewing angle for checking my surroundings on this bike. I
recently completed a build of a Velo Orange Polyvalent with their Wave
bars. I'd say it's right in the middle of a fully upright and neutral drop
bar position (not dissimilar to my angle on the Midnight Special.) It's
currently my absolute favorite ride.

If you have a bike you don't mind spending money to convert, I highly
recommend it. As Igor from Velo Orange says "change your bars, change your
life." He highly advocates for switching things up. If you have the dough
to spend on a new bike built this way, I think the Platypus or the Clem-L
are calling your name somewhere in the distance...

Midnight Special photo is a little outdated. I no longer have racks on it,
just a saddle bag support. Considering putting flat bars on it.

New in the box. Box is still sealed.
$1911.88, exactly what I paid.

I bought it new from RBW but never built it up or took it out of the box.

Local pickup in Berkeley: free!

Points beyond: buyer arranges, pays, and assumes all liability for shipping.

[RBW] Re: For all-rounder fandom doing spring overhauls

2024-04-05 Thread Matthew P
I watched the first 9 min. Thats pretty good for me! I'll return and skip
through the 53 min

Nice bike! Really a joy to see.

Possible the headset was just a little tight? Loosen and bit plus re-grease
it and done? I'll watch more to maybe find out :)

What prompted me to write: I like it "when threads collide" - his tall stem
called upon that other "clem stem" thread going on.
His stem makes pulling it out difficult. It wouldn't be the case if he was
using more of the length and cable lengths set at that.
Not a mistake, but we can see how that tall of a stem maybe causes a little
difficulty for him (quill stem supposed to make adjustments easier, is one
argument) plus the weight (FWIWeighs).

Great bike though. No complaints overall. I'll return to ingest more of the
vid.

Re: [RBW] Experience with North Street Bags backpack panniers?

I have a couple of their panniers as well as a trunk bag and a hip pack
from them. I daily wear the hip pack and it's pretty worse for wear after
one year but I beat the ever living crap out of it (it's their ecopak
material.) I've had two of the Route Panniers 24L bags for probably 2-3
years now for commuting to work and they've been great, made of cordura. I
can't attest to their durability on a grueling tour but I really like them
and haven't had any excessive wear or leaks. Their customer service is also
fantastic and very responsive.

On another note: Last year they sent out a 3rd party survey and I decided
to fill it out on a whim. At the end of it, it asked if I had anything else
I'd like to mention. I told them I was in the market for a nice trunk bag
with a roll top closure and to my surprise, I got a return email direct
from them (less than two days later) letting me know they had some old
stock I could buy or I could order a custom bag from them. I went with the
custom and the turn around was VERY fast.

Are they the best bags out there? I can't say. Are they good quality?
Absolutely and they seem to be some great folks in my experience.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Campeur Front Rack

2024-02-26 Thread Matthew Rebmann
Nitto's stuff is top notch but it's not *quite* what I'm looking for. That
all being said, if I just can't find what I'm looking for then I'll likely
end up buying the Nitto rack. I'm just stubborn and figure I might get
lucky if I'm persistent lol.

I particularly like the integrated decaleur the VO Campeur rack has, along
with the mirror finish (rather than Nitto's satin nickel) and it'll match
nicely either VO's Campeur rear rack which I intend on buying soon. I'm
honestly pretty surprised they discontinued it.

Re: [RBW] B17 alternatives

2024-02-01 Thread Matthew Rebmann
The Aspin is 18mm narrower than the B17- If you're trying to be comparable
then the Aubisque/Vars/Mente City saddles would be a lot closer in
dimensions. Aspin is 157mm, B17 is 175mm, and the Aubisque is 180mm. I
nearly selected selected the Aspin myself but my friend pointed out the
measurements to me. Stacked on top of each other the Aubisque and B17 are
barely any different. Side note: the Berthoud saddles are gorgeous and the
leather is top notch.

[RBW] Paging Dave Johnston (Fredericksburg, VA?)

2024-01-25 Thread Matthew Pendergraft
[ Cross posting on RBW and iBOB lists ]

Hi all,

I'm reaching out to Dave Johnston, who was in Fredericksburg, VA as of a
few years back.

I sold an Atlantis that I would love to get back. Dave had it at one point.

Dave, if you see this, please follow up.
Its fine if you have the bike and don't want to sell it, or if you already
sold it etc. No problem.
But it'd be great to hear from you.

Or if someone can put me in contact with Dave, please do.
I sent an email and didn't get a response.

Much appreciated.

[RBW] WTB: Campeur Front Rack

2023-12-08 Thread Matthew Rebmann
I'm working on a Velo Orange Polyvalent Touring build and the discontinued
front rack is exactly what I'm looking for. I'd go the Nitto Campee but I'm
aiming for a matching set and I prefer the aesthetics of VO's racks for
this build (Nitto also carries a hefty price, even though it's worth it!).
Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Re: [RBW] Appaloosa 57cm Purple

2023-11-20 Thread Matthew Williams
Yes, and therein hangs a tale.

My plan was (and still is) to ride the Pacific Coast Highway (CA-1) from San
Francisco to San Diego. I bought the purple frameset to build a touring bike
with parts I’ve been collecting over the years.

Then I found a used bike with exactly the build I wanted.

Then the transmission in my work truck died, so this project and trip are on
hold for the forseeable future. Bleh.

Re: [RBW] Sizing Down? Pocket ‘Pus.

2023-11-14 Thread Matthew Williams
I’ve taken my bike on Amtrak's Capitol Corridor and Coast Starlight lines
without any questions or problems. Both trains had a carriage with a bike area:
bikes ride in an upright rack with folding arms to which bikes can be strapped
and locked without removing the front wheel.

No one measured my bike or asked me about it, and the times I’ve ridden the
train with my bike, I’ve seen only one or two other bikes in the rack.

2023-11-06 Thread Matthew Williams
Congratulations Adrianna! I’ve been watching for your bike at swap meets and
everywhere I ride and walk, so I’m very happy you got it back!

With regards to removing Sharpie: DO NOT use acetone! Acetone will remove the
clearcoat, decals, and the Rivendell enamel paint. Acetone is one of the
“hottest” solvents and I only use acetone when I’m cleaning bare metal.

So happy for your good news! Can you share more details of how you got it back?

Re: [RBW] What shoes does your Riv wear?

2023-10-04 Thread Matthew Williams
Hi everyone,

I just got my second flat tire: a small chunk of glass pierced my brand-new
rear Schwalbe G-One Overland. The tire had less than fifty miles on it.

In the past two months, I’ve had more flats with new tires than I had in the
past three years with the Kenda tires that came stock from RBW.

What am I doing wrong? Do I need liners inside the tires, better/more durable
tubes, different tires, or all three?

[RBW] Tire Recommendations

2023-08-09 Thread Matthew Williams
Hi everyone,

I need a new set of durable-ish, puncture-resistant tires.

Type of ride: Mostly long-distance rides on asphalt and concrete, and the
occasional gravel or dirt path.

Size: 700 x 50

Dealbreakers: I use tubes, and all-black sidewalls. No gumwalls or stripes!

I’m curretly looking at these two Schwalbe options:

G-One Overland:
https://www.schwalbetires.com/Schwalbe-G-One-Overland-11654399

Hurricane:
https://www.schwalbetires.com/Hurricane-11159185

Does anyone have experience with either of these tires? Are these good options?
Or, can you make a recommendation for another tire that would work for me?

As always, your experience, wisdom, and advice are welcomed and appreciated.

Re: [RBW] A College Clem

2023-08-05 Thread Matthew Williams
Don’t do it!

The college towns in which I’ve lived—and currently live—have a terrible
problem with bike theft. I frequently see cut locks and stripped frames in the
racks outside the dorms, apartment complexes, and university villages, and
certain streets in this college town are littered with sad piles of
disassembled frames, wheels, and miscellaneous parts.

Get a beater bike he won’t have to worry about when he locks it up outdoors. My
college beater bike got me around campus even though it was badly neglected: I
nad neither the time nor the money to spend on it . . . but I never had to
worry about it being stolen.

He shouldn’t have to worry about his heirloom Clem, and he’ll be heartbroken
when it’s stolen. Keep it safe in the garage, and save it for when he
graduates.

Re: [RBW] Front Derailleur Suggestions

2023-06-16 Thread Matthew Williams
Hi everyone, for my existing drivetrain:

RD: Shimano Deore M591
Cassette: 9sp Shimano XTR 11/34T
SIlver crankset 44/34/24 (standard-issue from Rivendell)
9sp chain

I need a front derailleur with a narrow 9sp cage.

Would the Alpina Triple front derailleur work with my setup? Is the Alpina
Triple designed to work with 7/8-speeds, or 9/10 speeds?

https://www.interlocracing.com/shop/60120-ird-alpina-front-derailleur-triple-braze-on-4020

(It’s braze-on, so I would be getting the 28.6 clamp.)

[RBW] When to Replace a Helmet?

2023-06-15 Thread Matthew Williams
Back in October, I was turning onto a path via a curb cut, but I was going too
fast and my front wheel slid out from under me. I scraped my hand and chin, and
my knee was bruised and swollen. As I landed on my shoulder, my head flopped to
the side and gently *tapped* the concrete.

If I hadn’t been wearing a helmet, my head would not have touched the ground.
The force with which my head and helmet touched the ground felt equivalent to
bumping your head on a desk as you bend down to pick up a pencil: you’re
surprised, but not hurt. I didn’t lose consciousness or have neck pain, and my
helmet has no visible scratches or scuffs.

I’ve heard and read helmets should be replaced after a crash--but what’s the
degree of severity? Are there any rules-of-thumb e.g. if the helmet was scuffed
from the impact, get a new helmet? The force with which my head touched the
ground didn’t feel hard or severe, but is that because the helmet absorbed the
impact? Do I need a new helmet?

[RBW] Re: Matt's Green Rosco Platypus (photos)

2023-06-14 Thread Matthew Miller
Thanks all for the kind responses! It’s such a smooth ride that I’m always
looking for excuses to hop on. It’s also so unexpectedly speedy and really
zips when you want it to. Hope to join some local rides soon.

Marty and John – David is correct and that it just a shadow from the
pedals. Sorry for the confusion.

Eric – They are indeed the pricey Blue Lug ones
<https://global.bluelug.com/rew10-works-hex-brass-valve-cap.html> which I
was very fortunate to receive as a gift. They thread pretty securely but
I’m always a little worried they will disappear.

Allan – Love that noodle and cable hanger routing! I picked up my hanger on
the cheap cheap and made it work, but it’s pretty short and pushes the
cable bend a bit further than I’d prefer. Might tweak it to be closer to
your setup in the future :)
