[RBW] Re: first impressions of Atlantis
I’d be interested in hearing more about how the G-One Allrounds do off road and what kind of trails you ride. I’ve been thinking of putting them on my Jones SWB since I ride quite a bit on road and rarely ride on trails when they are muddy and don’t feel like knobbies are really needed for the riding I do. Re: [RBW] How & when & why did you find Rivendell? What was your first bike or part from them?
I learned about Rivendell in 1997 when I was educating myself Online on high-end steel road frames and manufacturers. I ended up buying a Waterford but became a Riv member shortly thereafter and continued to follow them along with BQ. I’d always wanted an Atlantis When they were introduced but couldn’t justify another bike and they kept going up in price; but then when I was looking for a new frame to build up in 2009 that would take tires larger than 30 mm, Riv introduced a low cost version, Sam Hillborne so I bought one and built it up myself. I commute on it daily and it serves as my tourer and gravel bike. I love it! Oh by the way, my first purchase was LS Merino tee sometime around 2000 and I still wear it regularly. [RBW] FS: Saddles, Brooks, VO, Vintage Selle Italia
I'm finally getting around to clearing out some stuff and decided to start with some saddles. 1) Brooks C19 Carved All-Weather Black. As-new condition with less than 50 miles. Just didn't work for me. 10/10. $85 plus shipping. 2) Velo Orange Model 6, similar to Brooks Swallow. I bought this about 10 y ago and it has less than 100 miles on it and has been sitting inside in a drawer. It is also like-new, 10/10. $60 plus shipping. 3) Selle Italia Flite Titanium. I bought this for my Waterford 1250 in 1998 and used it for the first 2 years before moving on to a Brooks B17. It has about 2500 mi. and I would rate it a 7/10 only because the leather is slightly faded, otherwise it's in excellent condition. Also stored indoors. $60 plus shipping. [RBW] Re: Fender hacks with marks rack & Tektro brake
I did something similar to what Friend suggests. The front of my SKS fender broke off where I cut slots to allow my side pulls room around the fender. I simply used aluminum flashing and attached it to the bottom of the rack using the existing screws. Worked fine. I don’t have that setup anymore so can’t provide photos. Mike C. [RBW] Pivots and CR720s
I have a first generation canti Sam and my CR720s wiggle quite s bit in the pivots, more so on the fork. With more than usual toe-in they perform just fine. Still as the toe-in lessens with pad wear the judder starts to reappear. Do others have this issue? Are the tolerances of the 720s just poor? Are other brakes better in this regard? I guess I could swap in the ‘90’s vintage Deore LX brakes on my tandem to check. I assume that brakes with built-in pivots like Paul’s would be an improvement in the regard. Comments? Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne vs A. Homer Hilsen
I have a first gen canti Sam 60 cm single TT in Metallic green with gold decals. While it's a great loaded tourer it's a bit heavy for commuting and general unloaded riding. If the extra $$ is not an issue I would go with an AHH to avoid the overkill double TT and get the slightly lighter tube set. Also, regarding lighter wheels, here is some data. I just weighed my wheels without cassettes this weekend since I was overhauling my hubs. 9 spd XT hubs with A719 rims are 2350 g a set. My 9 spd Campy Veloce hubs with Open Pro rims on my Waterford 1250 are 1900 g a set. So a delta of 1 lb. I expected it to be more. [RBW] Re: Anyone used a large Saddleback for touring?
Max S, I friend and I went for three weeks in early September. I did extensive trip planning, which is part of the fun for me. The goal was to spend the time climbing many of the pass made famous in the Tour de France. I used a combination of Google Maps and the Michelin Road Atlas. I then cut out the pages and made up cue cards for each day. My buddy had his IPhone as navigation backup. Worked out very well. I did book hotels ahead of time not knowing the demand in small towns that time of year. Next time I wouldn't bother except for first, last, and a few nights in between to give us more flexibility, although it all worked out just fine. The only real option for getting your bike there is to take it with you on the plane. Other options a more expensive and less convenient. We used Pika Packworks bags, which are fairly compact soft sided bags and were not charged the $200 fee from DAY. The worker at the counter comments on the size and we just smiled and said something about how light it was and she just took it to the conveyor. Departing from Geneva we split up during checkin and again my bike made it through without charge but my friend was charged the $200. I packed based on my own experience of what I need. Most hotels had secure areas where we could keep our bikes; they were never kept out in the open. It was a real dream tour come true! PM me for more details and photos. [RBW] Re: Anyone used a large Saddleback for touring?
Last year I did an ultralight 3-week tour of the French Alps carrying less than 15 lbs in a large acorn boxy and Carradice Junior. Worked out very well. The only advantage to panniers is that they can be quickly removed and carried with you. I resorted to large nylon bags to remove my stuff each day. No problem with sway even during out of the saddle climbing. I really like this combo for light loads. Re: [RBW] Re: Tech question.
I had the same thing happen to my 9 spd bar end shifter after about 14k miles. In the middle of the range where it spent the most time the indexing got very sloppy to the point where it didn't click positively in 2 or 3 gears. I used it in friction mode after that for a short while but eventually replaced them with a new set since the replies I got from the group were that they were not repairable.
