[RBW] Re: Thinking about cycling for me in the future....
One other tid-bit, relating to my OP... I had heart surgery about 18 months ago, and while rehabbing (it went well, thanks goodness) a nurse came by our home for a weekly wellness check. She saw my bike, and said she was a triathlete. (Trust me when I say, she looked like it...totally ripped.) She told me that she stopped training on the road due to the risk, and she was in her 30's. That really planted a seed with me. The surgery was was also heads up that if I got injured, it would take a long time to heal. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Thinking about cycling for me in the future....
Thank you all for the thoughtful and measured responses. I have read and considered each one of them. Right at this moment, I'm inclined to sell my Soma San Marcos -- which I love -- and get a high end spinner. I don't want to lose my fitness, and I like the feeling of peddling. (Selling my bike would prevent me from going out now and then.) The area I live in is pretty backward. There are a number of cyclists, but also lots of harassment from drivers while riding...mostly from young white males in pickup trucks. It can get pretty chippy sometimes, to the point where a confrontation isn't out of the question. I only point this out because drivers around here aren't inclined to give riders a break. Several cyclists have been killed in recent years, caused by distracted drivers hititng them from behind, which is something that no amount of situational awareness can prevent. [RBW] Thinking about cycling for me in the future....
I'm turning 67 in a week, and haven't ridden in a couple of months. The last time out, a woman blew a stop sign at an intersection -- presumably while texting, base on her body language -- and if I'd been 100 feet closer to the intersection, I would have been creamed. I shook for a couple of days afterwards, and haven't been motivated to go out since. As with most of us, this isn't an isolated incident. My instinct is to quit riding. A couple things are behind that. Because of my age, my reflexes, depth perception, and general eyesight are in decline. I only ride on the road, as mountain and trail riding don't appeal to me. I guess I could start spinning at home to keep my fitness level up. I know the odds are that I will be fine, but even a minor accident would take months to recover from. A major accident could result in permanent damage. Am I overreacting? It's been several months and I've had no urge to ride again. Re: [RBW] Re: Dealing with verbal harrassment on the road
Thank you all for your varied and well stated thoughts. I've never gotten into a fight in my life, including grade school. I've always been good a diffusing a bad situation. (My father was an alcoholic and a bully, so it was a skill I learned early on.) But for some reason, these three incidents in the past week or so really struck me as being somehow different than any of the other times in my cycling life (been riding since I was 4...so 62 years!). They projected a sense of embolden-ment that was really powerful. Like they were somehow deputized to "clean up Dodge City" or something. I couldn't help but feel there was a real conflict just waiting to happen. On this evening's ride, I flatted a few blocks from home. As I was walking my bike back, since it was late, a guy in a pickup who fit the demographic of my 3 most recent "friends" passed me, then pulled over, and when I came up to him, offered me a ride. So, as several of you have pointed out, more times than not, the good outweighs the bad. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Dealing with verbal harrassment on the road
This is a fairly comment problem, I know. Lately I've had three different incidents where drivers slowed as they passed me and yelled something. One was, "get off the road" while I was riding in a marked bike lane, another was a dressing down after I rolled (at a walking pace) a stop sign in an empty rural intersection, another was something unintelligible. I'm 66, and not inclined to interact with anyone verbally or physically, so I ignored them. All three motorists drove off after venting, so nothing happened. But, if things were to escalate verbally, what would be the best course of action? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread
(This is group is sophisticated enough to understand there's a lot more going on than the objective weight of a bike. So bear with me. I know I'm preaching to the choir...) I had two interesting experiences about 10 years ago regarding bike weight...and both happened at the end of the same ride. I pulled into the lot where I was parked on my Rambouillet. I had just finished an 80 mile ride, and was tired and happy. When I dismounted, I rolled my bike over to car and hoisted it up into the back of my van. I was shocked how heavy it felt. I realized that because the bike was so balanced weight-wise and handling-wise, it felt light as a feather as I rode, even after 80 miles. It was at that moment that I stopped thinking about bike weight. A few minutes later a friend, who was a bike racer, came driving up and got out of his car. He asked if he could ride my bike amount the lot for a minutes. He wanted to see what a leather saddle felt like. Before he mounted, he gave the frame a quick lift to check the weight, and was utterly horrified. Long story short, after riding around the lot for a while, he was grinning from ear to ear. Ten years later, he subscribes to BQ, rides a touring frame, and swears he has more fun than he ever did back in his weight weenie racer days. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Nitto Noodles vs Soma Highway One Bars
I have a 42 cm wide version of each, which I've traded back and forth on a Soma San Marcos frame. Over time, I can't shake the conclusion that a combination of the tops of the Noodles and the drops of the Highway One would be ideal. Any thoughts on that observation...and any suggestions as to a third option that might yield that imagined result? Or, to put it another way, a shop where you can walk in with a Rivendell and not get laughed out the door. (That's happened to me before.) Re: [RBW] Re: 10-30 minute rides
One thing I learned years ago, in order to best lose weight through cycling, is that riding a short distance everyday is very effective...as long as it doesn't require any additional eating. So... A daily 20-30 minute ride in the morning or evening, without any extra pre-or-post calorie intake, is the ticket. Over time, I've become addicted to short rides...they are great fun! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
