Re: [RBW] Babies on bikes

2023-09-02 Thread Paul Richardson
I had a very positive experience with the Thule Yepp Mini front-mounted
seat for ~9 months to nearly two-years-old. It pairs well with sweptback
bars like Choco and Albatross, though I also used it with Wavie bars. We
definitely started before age one, no problem. I ride big bikes, so
there's plenty of space, but my wife also rides with it on her Choco'd 51cm
Homer Hilsen and does just fine. I've probably got a picture somewhere...

I had a very negative experience with the Hamax Caress (rear mounted) and
do not recommend it.

With older kids, I think the Burley trailer is a great option. I don't
feel like it changes the ride feel *too* dramatically, and it's pretty
simple to move from bike to bike (if there's more than one in your
stable). I wrecked once; the trailer flipped on its side, but my daughter
was completely fine and just wanted to keep going.

I did find that both of my kids were super overstimulated by their first
couple of rides on the Thule and starting with short, slow circles around
the neighborhood was right for their temperaments.

Biking with kids is the best. Start 'em young.

[RBW] Re: Have you tried MKS Seahorse pedals

2023-08-12 Thread Paul Richardson
Thanks for all the feedback.

I'm not 100% sold on the huge pedal thing that seems to be quite prevalent,
and the Seahorse seemed like a nice way to split the difference. But
Brendan your negative experience is especially helpful. Slippy is no
bueno, no no no.

I've seen the Tacos, and had the pleasure of playing with a pair of
Bubblys, which seem to spin simply by being looked at...man what did they
grease those bearings with, wowee zowee. The pricepoint ($100 Bubblys vs.
$32 Seahorse, at bluelug) is also a consideration.

Still deciding if I'll toss a pair in the cart, but I'll offer my firsthand
experience if I do.

thanks

2023-05-21 Thread Paul Richardson
thanks to all for taking the time to respond.

keith--tosco certainly looks nice but i'm really looking for
moosebars--maybe choco, but probably bosco. i'm surprised to see yours
sloping down as much as they do. the angle looks like the cheviot picture
on the riv site, and (to my eye) a lot steeper downward than the photos on
bluelug. but gee gah maybe it's all an optical illusion, or a result of
headtube angle?!

jay--sitting "more upright than i wanted" is...exactly what i want!

eric--bluelug

is a treasure trove of photos--totally forgot to look there first.

time to start saving my allowance!

[RBW] boscomoose - pictures, experiences, comparisons?

2023-05-20 Thread Paul Richardson
howdy folks

i've been doing the best digging i can and cannot seem to wrangle very many
pictures of rivs with boscomoose bars. have you tried them? did you like
them? i ride big bikes, so i'm not too concerned about knee strike on the
bar-ends, which i gather can be a drawback for some. their fixedness
obviously makes for a riskier purchase than separate stem+bars, so i'd love
to hear your experience before i take the plunge!

thanks in advance

It's not every day I encounter the word SALUKI in my day-to-day, but found
it yesterday in the New York Times crossword as an answer to the 17-across

that's a great looking bike. congrats!

i swapped out dura-ace barends for silver1 (downtube) shifters on my homer

in my experience, you can't go wrong with the 38mm rene herse tires,
especially if you're looking to zippy it up and complement the atlantis.
they'd almost certainly feel livelier than the schwalbes.

[RBW] Re: New Wheels for Clem; need advice

2021-09-02 Thread Paul Richardson
my wife's homer hilsen has 32-spoke 650b wheels built on velocity A23 rims,
with 38mm standard casing rene herse tires. the bike is entirely too small
for me, but i ride it anyway, and boy does it feel zippy and light and
spritely and fast and fun. i'm certainly no expert, but i believe if
you're considering a new wheelset, the three primary variables* to consider
are your weight, the type of roads you ride, and the amount of gear you
schlep. then get wheels that are built, not *over*built, and..just
ride.

Re: [RBW] Cycles Grand Bois Centerpulls vs Tektro R559

2021-08-23 Thread Paul Richardson
i can't speak to the direct comparison, but i've been riding 559s on my
homer hilsen for a decade without a complaint. i find them perfectly able,
even in the rain or on questionable / mountain bikey terrain (the kind of
rides where people ask my least favorite question: "how are you making out
on *that thing*?")

you might look into the paul racer as a centerpull option? i've only used
the racer m, but it's a mighty fine brake, in my opinion.

good luck

Re: [RBW] Rack recommendation

2021-08-16 Thread Paul Richardson
i use a roof-mounted Thule and a Rockymounts (not sure the models--they're
similar--both of the wheels stay on the bikes) on a Subaru Outback. I am
not 100% confident in either of them, though I do prefer the Rockymounts.
The Thule arm over the front wheel tends to slip, and I end up nervously
eyeing the bikes thru the sunroof while I'm ripping down the expressway.
We just returned from a drive to Maine and back, and I am now very
seriously considering installing a hitch and getting a trunk rack--the type
where the bikes are secured by the wheels, not the frame. Seems to me the
bikes would be equally, if not more, secure, and subjected to far less wind
whippage as well. (I read on this board that headset grease can blowout at
highway speeds, which seems like it wouldn't happen on the trunk).

I'd welcome any input from folks with experience using hitch racks.

Re: [RBW] Beginners SLR camera?

i'll cast a vote for a canon ae-1. easy to come by, very beginner
friendly, and, with some basic understanding of the exposure triangle, not
too difficult to get nice looking photos that were obviously not taken on

 Hi Everyone,

Just a heads-up that we launched a new theme today for the rivbike.com
webstore. We enlarged the photos all around, spruced up the homepage,
improved the search, and updated a number of things for a smoother
experience on desktop and mobile. We hope you like it!

The other big reveal is that the Blug, our newsy blog that has been on
Tumblr ever since 2010, has now moved within rivbike.com to
https://www.rivbike.com/blogs/news. With that move, you now have one
site for all the latest product updates, news and Grant's blog. Just head
 to the homepage.

Enjoy and let us know what you think.

re: Andrew's comment that the steering is "light to the point of being
twitchy"

I'm curious if others have that experience. I ride hands free all the time
(again, XL frame + 10cm DirtDrop + choco bars) and find the bike to be
supremely stable and not at all twitchy. Basically, my question is, is
twitchiness inherent in frame design, or is it affected by the build?

Sam, the MBs were 90s mtbs, more similar to an Atlantis than a Susie.
The Susie has a much more upright position, and a radically longer top
 tube
(70cm on the XL, with a 59cm seat tube.) The design of early mountain
bikes, and most race designed bikes regardless of generation, is to spread
your center of gravity more evenly between the hbars and seat in order to
reduce drag. None of these principles apply to the Susie, which is
 designed
to have most of the weight on the saddle, further back and over the rear
stays, for the purpose of comfort.

okay, so three of us pulling for the much-larger-than-61cm frameset...is
that enough of a critical mass to convince the powers that be?

barring that, who's holding a 68cm quickbeam and wants to free up room in

[RBW] Re: Chambray shirt deal alert

2020-11-20 Thread Paul Richardson
if this is a medium, it's the largest medium of all time. i measure 22"
pit-to-pit and 31" from the collar to the bottom of the shirt (measured on
the back). we'll see what a wash and dry does but man i shoulda gone with
the small. sleeves are 21" pit-to-cuff. fabric seems real nice.

To loop back to my question, I measured a few shirts and they're all

 circumference/chest. I don't think I'm a particularly small fella
(5'10"/160), so that's why I asked for a confirmation from those who
actually have these shirts, especially as they are "Final Sale".

well said mark, and i agree 100%. whacky is a huge compliment in this
context! i scratch my head at modern mountainbike stuff the same way i do
at carbonfiberduraacespandexdiscomfort.

i preordered my wolbis and was completely surprised when i saw the
instrument decals on the top tube and chainstays. and the more i'm on it
it just feels like it embraces its individuality--the name, the insanely
long wheelbase, the decals. it's elegant and goofy and awesome all at the
same time, and your purple/white parts really accentuate that. i went more
'classic' with my build.

I rode it, the verdict is in, it's a great bike! I can't give any
specifics of ride quality because it just feels like a Riv to me: stable
yet turns on a dime, kinds floaty and zingy. Honestly it feels like a
slightly shorter version of my custom, which makes sense because the
built-for-me frame was spec'd pretty close to the Bombadil's mission.

Even the riding position is nailed right off the bat, which I find
hilarious. I plopped the bars and stem I had in there and set the saddle
 height and it's perfect!

Here's a couple of sunny pics so you can see the raw metal better.
Check out that gusset under the downtube, I don't think any other Riv came
 with it.

confirm that he's a super nice guy and the bike is in great shape (IMO). I
can also confirm that I need a 66 or 68 'beam if anybody's got one they're

xxl would look like--this thing is HUGE--to the tune of 8" longer, axle to
axle, than my 67cm homer. no wiggle for me so far, and i've bombed 'er

On their own, I don't love "Susie W. Longbolts" or "Wolbis Slugstone," but
I think the name SUZIE WOLBIS is the bees knees. I like it best
misspelled, which I realize ruins the anagram, but phonetically it's the
same and I hope I do more talking about my bike than writing about it.

Also love Bombadil, A. Homer Hilsen, and completely agree that Honus Wagner
would have hook lined 'n sinker'd me, recalling the happiest days of
teenhood, combing thru beat-up copies of Beckett magazine.

the first set of tires i'll be trying out on my xl wolbis are the 55cm from
compass, mounted to cliffhangers. they'd probably fit fine on several
