I ordered her on the pre-order before COVID days. She only got built up a

What a grand bike! And huge.
I'll wait a few more days and ride some proper trail to post a ride report,
but I'm loving the ride so far.

A very please Paul

[RBW] Re: Handlebar suggestions for Gus\Susie

2020-05-23 Thread Paul Y
Congrats :)

I am struggling with the same question.

I have 2 bars ready for my Susie when it arrives... 58cm bosco and 66cm
bullmoose.

I think I will put the bullmoose on first and change to the bosco if I find
the bullmoose uncomfortable for very long rides.
I also have a Ritchey P29-er with regular MTB riser bars, so that factors
into how Susie will get used, ie, not planning to ride her so aggressively.

Whatever you choose, do share pictures and impressions.

[RBW] Why I went Tubeless

2020-05-15 Thread Paul Y
FWIWI I have been using a floor pump and seating schwalbe tires (knobby nic,
racing ralph) just fine on Stans Rims (arch 29, flow 26) since 2012. They seat
at about 40 PSI for me.

The amount of rim tape used has been an important factor.

Very interesting to know that Jack Brown's will fit under SKS P45s!

My Compass 32mm Stampede Pass tires seem tight under my SKS P45s (albeit
they are 13 years old, dimensions may have been updated since)

Nonetheless I have been wanting to buy a pair of JBs for fenderless days

Re: [RBW] Photos of my Roadeo, set up for brevets

2020-04-29 Thread Paul Y
Thanks Patrick!

I'm in Singapore.

The brake levers are Riv's long standing favourite Shimano Tiagras (they
went by another name when I bought them). The hoods wore off a long time
ago and I could never find replacements. I don't know if it happens in
temperate climates, but in warm and humid climates, the rubber tends to
melt.

I used a file to smoothen the sharp metal edges before wrapping them in
twine. The twine is comfortable on long rides with gloves, I think there
would be chaffing without.

Saddlebag is a Carradice zipped roll bag. I have a Sackville banana sack on
the way.

[RBW] Photos of my Roadeo, set up for brevets

2020-04-29 Thread Paul Y
John G mentioned that he likes seeing Roadeos setup for brevets, inspiring
this post.

There are not a lot of pictures of Roadeo setups available generally, so I
wanted to share these photos to help anyone considering a Roadeo for just
this purpose, which is why I bought mine.

At the time, I was considering a L'Avecaise. However, Jeff informed me that
he was not taking international orders. This Roadeo frame soon popped up on
this list.

This bike is lovely - it does everything I want a road bike to do, but with
Rivendell level of comfort. It has been an almost daily rider for a few
years, and done a couple of 200k brevets.

[RBW] What type of bike would make you buy another riv

2018-03-18 Thread Paul Y
I'm very late to this... I have a 56 2TT Sam,built tank mode, and a 59 Roadeo
in Rando mode. I love how fast the Roadeo is to pedal but prefer the leisurely
carving of the Sam, which I imagine is due to the long wheelbase and slack
geometry. I think a Sam with Roadeo tubing might be the ticket... I should
probably buy a single TT Sam or an AHH and see how I go with that first though.

Re: [RBW] Re: Seeking opinions on 11 speed roadie setup

All these opinions have helped me decide to stick with 2x8 gearing and just
keep working on getting stronger. A good reminder that STI is a black box and
is perfect until it's not... I plan to do audaxes so the bar end system should
be considered a big plus, enough reason to forego the closer gearing.

[RBW] Re: Seeking opinions on 11 speed roadie setup

2018-01-15 Thread Paul Y
Haha, Justin, love it!

Really, thank you all for chiming in. I like that the opinions are weighted
towards simplicity... so I think I will keep my 2 x 8 speed for a while.

Joe: Exactly what I was thinking when wondering whether to go STI or not. I
used to have Dura Ace 7800 on another bike.
Bill: Yes of course, I am under no illusion that only training is going to
make me faster - and I think it's there in my post, that I am constantly
doing workouts / strength building.
A Nostuh: True, I love the 7 speed on my Sam very much.
Deacon, I rode nothing but a fixed gear bike (42 x 17) for about 2 years,
some 10 years ago. I like it, but I think I prefer having gears nowadays,
it just allows for more variation during a ride and I like that it is more
forgiving, especially riding in unforgiving situations (Singapore roads)
and alot of the time in heavy rain. I'm still unclear whether it is better
to push tall gears, something I've often done, or train to spin at a higher
cadence.

[RBW] Seeking opinions on 11 speed roadie setup

2018-01-14 Thread Paul Y
Hi all,

Looking for opinions and perspective s before scratching an itch!

I've been riding my Roadeo with a dura ace 7400 double crank (38 and 48t) with
a Sora 8 speed 11-25 cassette, Shimano bar ends (9 speed but running friction)
and an older XT rapid rise rear derailer.

The gearing is pretty good for me - it's enough to manage 10 deg climbs and
truck along around 35 kph.

I've been riding the Roadeo like a typical club rider might, generally without
fenders and wearing lycra, though I haven't actually been riding with a club!
The plan is to ride a few audaxes this year though.

I'm tempted to change to a new Shimano 105 5800 drivetrain (11 speed) and
brifters, which should go on easily as I already have a 105 11-speed hub.

I love the robustness of the current setup but always looking for ways to get
more speed ( and I'm constantly training / trying to build strength).

Has anyone else transitioned their bike similarly? As in, going from Riv values
to modern racy (meshed with steel and larger tires)? I still have a Sam setup
as a practical bicycle so I guess that leaves me freedom to embody another
cycling personality.

Thanks for reading, and hopefully sharing your feelings on this.

Paul

[RBW] RB-1 vs Rivendell

2017-03-05 Thread Paul Y
I have never ridden an RB-1, Ram or Legolas so this can be considered worthless
opinion... but I went from riding a Sam daily for 6 years to a Roadeo a few
months ago, and I love the Roadeo so much that I think everyone who likes any
type of athletic riding and appreciates Riv virtues should get one. I have SKS
fenders, full dyno lighting, a Nelson longflap with bagman support and bar tube
bag, XD-2 triple wth platform pedals, making it perfectly good as a commuter
yet still fun to flog (unlike Sam, where flogging was only fun on days that I
felt particularly strong, and immensely tiring otherwise). I take the Roadeo in
this configuration to join club rides too. I do everything with Roadeo except
ride trail and take public transport. Roadeo!!!

I love the Sam on off roady tires and had 40c marathon extremes on it for a
long time, taking it out on many trails in Chiang Mai with those tires...
however I also managed to break the HT/TT lug joint doing so! Later on I
got a Soulcraft Option 3 (pic ) and riding trail
is much more fun on that, while still having some BoBish qualities in the
build.

I expect that later down the road I will put the bosco bars on it with
every racks and baskets on every boss possible and have the most useful
bike in the world again.

Added some pics of the Roadeo to this album .

[RBW] Re: New (to-me) Roadeo!

2017-01-08 Thread Paul Y
Thanks for all your comments. I am indeed loving this bike even more after
a few days of commuting on it and a couple of recreational rides, I don't
feel the need to have both this and the Hillborne in the stable, so I will
probably put the Hillborne frame up on the wall and appreciate that I have
a great backup if needed.

The Hillborne won my heart with its reliability and robustness. I marvelled
at how I could ride it on trail yet join club rides when necessary, then
shop for groceries on the way home. While I'd never complain about its ride
and handling, I couldn't say I really enjoyed it either. With the Hillborne
I loved the maturity and sensibility of design. The Roadeo, on the other
hand, has awoken the part of me that loves the tactile experience of
cycling and being at one with a bicycle. It throws the sensibility of racks
and bags and a kickstand out the window. It instead rewards with
responsiveness to pedal and steering inputs that is both sensual and
sensational, and really brings out the joy of riding in a puritanical way.
It is very pleasurable to ride, even if wearing a backpack with a hefty
lock and change of clothes, one feels like an athlete, moving with strength
and purpose on it. I had thought this type of riding was no longer for me,
but the Roadeo suggests otherwise!

I will still put on fenders and the Bagman support with the Carradice
Nelson when they arrive in the mail though, and hope they don't affect the
character of the Roadeo too much. If I still lived in Chiang Mai or a place
with some dirtish rides or possibilities of camping, I'd build the
Hillborne again in a heartbeat, because Sam is perfect in those situations.
In Singapore though, it is either mingling with the road traffic or
aggressive XC trail, so having just the Roadeo and my hardtail mtb fit the
bill well.

How the Roadeo compares to a Lyon or Boulder though, not something I might
ever know!

[RBW] New (to-me) Roadeo!

2017-01-02 Thread Paul Y
I just bought this 59cm Roadeo from Tim on the board.

After six years of living on the Sam and finding no other bike able to replace
its position in the stable, moving to the Roadeo feels like a leap of faith. I
had initially considered a Lyon (was not entertaining international orders) and
then Boulder (Mike seemed a bit too busy to reply emails). Then finally had the
realization that I was much more Rivified than I thought, having read this
board everyday for years and having really REALLY grown into my Sam.

Hoping to do a SR on it the Roadeo this year and fingers crossed, PBP 2019, but
the plan is also for this to replace my Sam as the commuter.

Pics from my shakedown ride:
https://flic.kr/p/QN8vdm
https://flic.kr/p/QFaCGn

Tektro 539s
Rich built 105/SON28 A23
8 speed Sora cassette
32mm Compass Stampede Pass
All other parts are from the hillborne and were standard Riv issue in 2010,
except my much-missed silver shifters which suffer the stuck-cable-end syndrome
:(

The Roadeo feels incredibly different from the Sam (56cm double TT). More
spritely, less robust, certainly more squirrelly at speed but I'm still sorting
out my riding position at this stage. Gets up to speed much quicker and more
effortlessly. Already missing the rack mounts and ability to mount a
kickstand... but I wanted a faster bike and everything can be gotten used to!

I have a Bagman support and fender nuts on order after which a Nelson longflap
and 45mm sks chromoplastics will join the party and normalcy can return!

Thanks for sharing in my joy :)

[RBW] Re: High Riding Handlebar Bag

2016-11-13 Thread Paul Y
Hi Kevin,
I experienced a similar effect with the Sackville Barsack, which I still
love, but which makes the Hillborne much harder to ride hands off.
Currently I'm using a medium wald basket on a Nitto mini-front and it rides
hands off much better. In the future I'm looking to move to a low-trail,
rack, bag and decaleur setup in the future, but in your circumstances I
might try to install attachment loops to the Kenswick?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/7fpzogny383rzxc/File%203-5-16%2C%2010%2059%2043%20PM.jpeg?dl=0

It sacrifices speed but is brilliant for everything else. Having had moustache
bars, noodles and these, I think these are the best riding bars on my Sam. The
bike just feels like it was made for riding upright like this. That said, my
bike is back to noodles, but only because its also my go-fast.

Enjoy!

[RBW] One reason I love my Sam Hillborne

2014-06-26 Thread Paul Y
I am probably more of a Strava user than most of you on the board. There is
a big wannabe-racer character in me. That said, almost 2 years ago I sold
my 23mm road bike and the Sam Hillborne became my only roadish bike.

Most of my rides get logged on Strava so I generally know where I am
performance-wise. This morning I put a really hard effort
http://www.strava.com/activities/158623274 in on the local road climb
with the Hillborne. It's roughly a 43 minute climb for me. I came roughly
1:15 slower than my personal record
http://www.strava.com/activities/23765457#3643957048, which I had made on
a modern road racer clipped in, clad in spandex, heart rate monitor et al.
That's about *3%* slower riding in a t-shirt, casual shorts, sneakers,
equipped with dyno lighting, kickstand and Sackville bar bag. No doubt the
Hillborne is a beast compared to the sub 9kg road bike
http://www.bikepedia.com/quickbike/BikeSpecs.aspx?year=2007brand=Feltmodel=F55

I sold. It offers comfort of another caliber of course - but that's another
story.

*3% slower up a 700m climb, riding both bikes at fast-as-possible effort.* I
think that's a remarkably small penalty to be on such a stately machine!

I really, really love my Rivendell.

[RBW] Seeking feedback: smart looking wool cycle shorts

2013-09-23 Thread Paul Y
Hi all,

I'm looking for some feedback on my pet project - cycling shorts inspired
by Grant's writings and also the posts of several on this group.
I had my prototype of these shorts made at the tailor's about 3 months ago
and have put about a thousand kilometers on them.
I have to say I am very pleased, and hope to bring these shorts to market
as a custom fitted, made-to-order product.

[RBW] Re: Seeking feedback: smart looking wool cycle shorts

2013-09-23 Thread Paul Y
Many thanks to everyone for all your invaluable feedback, this has been a
very encouraging response for me to keep going with this project.

Regarding material:
The main reason to use a wool blend vs. 100% wool has been that the wool
blends are lighter weight to deal with the warm weather here. Since these
will be made to order, the purchaser will have a choice in material, and
100% wool could be an option.
Generally the blends seem lighter and less prickly than any 100% wool I've
seen available here, and still dry fast and resist odor. I know merino
could be the ideal 100% wool, but that would make this a much more
expensive product.

Regarding the sit bone area:
I've been wondering what to do about the wear marks, and with this post it
seems clear that finding a solution to reinforce that area will be
necessary. Because one of the primary objectives are that the shorts look
smart, I'm avoiding the more popular synthetic materials for the short, and
also don't want to visibly add nylon. Wool seems to get polished by the
saddle as shown in the pictures. I am thinking with the next prototype, to
try adding elbow patches to the sit bone area.

@Lee : What a great DIY photo set you put together; thanks for sharing that.

@Shoji : Yes, these have a gusseted crotch, unless we have different
understandings of what a guesseted crotch is - there is enough range of
movement for the toughest hike-a-bikes I've found here, enough to do yoga
even!

@Deacon : I'd never come across worsted wool before - thanks I will look
into it.

@bwphoto : I've never seen these old cycling shorts before. Would you have
a photo to share? These shorts seem to work just fine without a chamois, so
I am quite certain to keep them chamois-less, as that is pretty much a
feature with these! But I am curious about these shorts you used to wear.

@Patrick Shoji : Great tip about plumbers crack, I will be sure to get a
high back into the next prototype.

@Patrick : Thanks for giving me so much information. I'll look at adding an
additional rear pocket. You'll be glad to know that the front pockets are
deep.

[RBW] WTB: Nitto Technomic Deluxe/Tallux 9cm

2013-04-23 Thread Paul Y
Anyone have one in the garage?

I am set up to send Paypal. One caveat is that I would need you to ship to
Thailand.

If you're looking for an 11 cm tallux, maybe we could trade?

[RBW] Re: 2 Top Tube Observations

2013-02-02 Thread Paul Y
I have a double TT 56 Hillborne.
Was a fan of the 2xTT when I bought it, but wouldn't want another bike with
a double top tube now.
This is because mine fractured from the head tube whilst riding up an
embankment. (downtube fractured too)
I have no scientific basis to believe the fracture has anything to do with
the double top tube, but it doesn't stop me from believing it does!

I was home and walked by the single TT 60 cm Hillborne sitting in my
entrance hall. As I walked by, I subconsciously thought, something looks
funny on that bike with it's big empty space in the main triangle and only
 one TT.

Holy crap. I've crossed over. I like the following comment in the Staff
Bikes section on the Rivendell site:

Another generation-gappy thing: youngsters and old folks embrace the
functionality of double sloping top tubes, yet crotchety middle agers still
 hold out.

[RBW] Re: 1 bike? Could you do it?

2013-01-22 Thread Paul Y
Gosh, life would be a lot simpler if circumstances forced me to have just
one bike. This ideal has been a mirage that I unconsciously wander
towards but never quite arrive at. I'm down to 2 now, but a 3rd on the way,
with plans to sell off 1 in later future... but the mind tends to keep
wanting!

If supernatural forces held me to just having one bike, then it'd be my Sam
now, and if I could choose from scratch, cost not an issue (which it
shouldn't be if reducing the stable to ONE bike!), maybe a custom steel
mountain bike, fully rigid, massive clearances.

One bike? Could ya do it and what would it be?

[RBW] On chainsuck

2013-01-21 Thread Paul Y
My Hillborne and its Sugino XD2 are about 3 years old. I recently put a new
chain on and had 100% reliable chain suck on the granny ring.
Earl Grey helped me out with a replacement ring and I put it on this
afternoon. Its interesting to note how severely burred the original ring is
on several teeth.

I'm wondering if I filed down the burrs, if this chain ring could provide
any further useful life, or if the profile is already beyond salvage.

The new ring has solved the problem completely!

[RBW] Re: Ride report: A week in northern Lao on my hillborne

2013-01-10 Thread Paul Y
A few post-ride thoughts:

Grant is truly wise!!!

1. I would do it with platforms and regular shoes next time. Time ATAC's
and mtb shoes were too uncomfortable within a context of five straight
8-hour days, and you wouldn't need to schlepp an extra pair of footwear.

2. Would not use a chamois for touring again. They are too hard to dry, and
didn't make a big comfort difference. I tried riding with a speedo under my
shorts, in a chamois, and commando (nothing dried!!). 150 km commando was
ok! A chamois just made laundry harder. I actually dumped mine on the trip.

3. Would just take 2 pairs of traveller zip-off trousers next time, one for
riding, one for dinner.

4. Probably ride in a t-shirt or a long sleeved shirt (sun protection) next
time. The racing jersey did nothing to help. Last day in a t-shirt was
possibly even more comfortable.

5. My rim tape was broken and I didn't realize until 2 tubes later. (the
valve hole was exposed and cutting the valves...I just thought I had
defective tubes). About 50 km from the next village (don't think one would
find a 700c tube anywhere in Lao anyway), I managed to make a 26x1.95 tube
that Jeff was carrying work in my 700x45 wheel. It actually held up very,
very well. I also used a bit of broken tube (1 x 1) with a hole in the
center and put this around the new tube's valve to protect it. Scissors is
real important! Worked perfectly - learnt so much on this trip.

The Hillborne did great on 45 mm marathon extremes over both road and dirt
road, but I'd much prefer a 2 tire on my next visit.
