Re: [RBW] Re: Gotham Cargo Crate
I see you are using a Wald with the strut attachments. I've never much cared for that arrangement as the basket does seem to move side to side a bit. I always attach my baskets directly to a front rack - usually the Nitto mini-front and in the past (and future I'm sure) on the now discontinued platrack attachment. That brings the basket down a bit from where I see yours in the photo and, as the base is steady, keeps the basket from swaying. I've never had any particular handling problems that way, though it does handle differently than an unloaded or very lightly loaded front. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/8111374065/in/set-72157631824788937 I have had front baskets set up the way yours is and yes, that's dicey. :-( Aloha, Bob Robert Harrison rfharri...@gmail.com www.statrix.com On Aug 3, 2013, at 7:21 AM, SMP sume...@gmail.com wrote: I had a similar experience on my Riv: http://www.flickr.com/x/t/0092009/photos/sumehra/5629443174/ Fully loaded with groceries... Re: [RBW] Re: Gotham Cargo Crate
It's my experience that a stable front platform beats basket struts hands down. I've no empirical proof of that, just my own experience. :-) I generally ride with 7-15 pounds up front without trouble on a regular basis. I'd be okay up to 20 lbs in a pinch but at that point would definitely add rear panniers and redistribute things. If I'm doing a shopping trip (or camping trip) that's definitely what I'd do. I tend to do a lot of smaller shopping trips (living in Hawaii I'm never far from a store). I wouldn't try 45lbs on that particular setup. Besides with that much weight a shift in position could probably break the zip ties I use to secure my basket to the rack. When I used the platrack under the basket things were a lot more stable than with just the mini-front, but even that's an improvement over basket struts. I just find the 'sway' using basket struts way too disconcerting. The handling with a firm mount is definitely much better and more stable. I never seem to have trouble while underway, just when stopped and forget I've got a load. :-) I ride in Honolulu in traffic regularly so my experience is definitely in 'light auto traffic.' Actually coming home it's often heavy auto traffic but at that point I'm faster. :-) The mini-front is only rated to 4.4 lbs according to Riv so I definitely overload it, but have never had an problems. Keeping the load stable in the basket is also important. Having things moving around is generally not good. I use a net to keep things in place, tightening it down as necessary. If I had 45 lbs to haul I'd try for 15/15 in the rear in panniers and 10 up front. I'm curious since, IMO, a big, front-mounted container is the easiest way to deal with things like groceries. But before I splurge on a Newsboy again, I want to be sure that I'm right. How much weight at most can you carry in your rack-supported basket without feeling endangered in tight auto traffic? (That is the particular condition I am interested in learning about: the sort of traffic that you get at and near busy strip malls.) I carry up to 45 lb of groceries at one go. Thanks. Re: [RBW] Re: Quickbeam Cockpit Change
Yes, I'm suspecting the same. The m-bars are moving to Hilo next time I go and once there will probably be there until that bike moves back to Honolulu (which may be a while). Of course I have a set Boscos here as well I'd planned to put on something….might need a new bike for that. :-) Aloha, Bob -- Robert Harrison Honolulu, HI statrix.com On Sunday, January 27, 2013 at 11:14 AM, Minh wrote: Bob, My QB came with moustache bars and i loved them, felt very responsive in traffic and could climb like crazy, figured i would go back to them after putting on some alba bars, but dang if those alba didn't win me over, can get similiar jack-rabbit acceleration with the albas and can lean back and cruise when i don't want that. a little less manuevarable in traffic, but need to ride more relaxed anyway! i predict this could be a permanent change. There was nothing wrong with it, but somehow it gets hard to get off a new bike. But it wasn't right. I still loved the QB. I just needed a good excuse. It finally came to me. The QB had ended up being set up with a Platrack up front which often sported a big Wald. It was great for shopping and hauling stuff around, but I was getting the feeling that my QB might want to run a wee bit lighter. After all a Hunq can carry pretty much anything you can throw at it so why have to two bikes set up more or less the same wa? I'm a January birthday boy and after purchasing the Hunq I had a decent amount of rebate due so I decided a cockpit change was in order for the QB. I'd fallen in love with Albatross bars so I decided I'd move from Moustache bars to Albas on the QB as well. I'm not giving up on the Moustache bars, they'll be going to Hilo to replace the drops on the RB-1 I keep there. I'm not a big drop fan so it'll mean I'll probably ride more when I'm in Hilo. This was also a good time to replace the cables and housing on my QB. I ordered new Albas, a new Tallux 13cm stem (big guy, 66cm QB, big stem - it's perfect), new Shimano brake levers, and cabling to boot. I also ordered a set of Portuguese cork grips. That meant I had to mix up a batch of shellac. I use so little of the stuff that buying a pint isn't really a deal as most of goes to waste after a couple of years. I find mixing up a couple of ounces at a time from flakes a better deal - besides it's fun. The rebuild itself was almost very smooth. I always forget my bikes are big enough I need extra long cables to reach the rear of the bike - I had to run out and get a tandem cable once I realized this. I also needed to replace my front barrel adjuster - but luckily I figured this all out in time such that I only had to make one trip to the LBS. Everything went pretty well after that. I had no trouble and in a couple of hours (lots of breaks) I had a brand new bike - sort of. :-) I did have to wait for the shellac to mix so I rode for one day with some cheap rubber grips I had laying around. Worked fine, ugly though. Then disaster struck. When putting on one of the cork grips I managed to break the darn thing. Luckily it was pretty clean break and I didn't lose any material. I was bemoaning the fact that I'd have to order another set when I realized that once they were on my bike both ends of the break would push together and be pretty much unnoticeable. Beausage of different sort I guess. Ultimately it turns out you can tell if you look at it up close but I can't feel any difference and a little imperfection never really bothers me so until they wear out completely I'm good. I did a few good coats of shellac, let it dry and voila...time to ride. Yesterday I went out for 20 mile jaunt after work and stopped to take some not so great photos with my camera phone. I'll have to get out with a decent camera at some point, but some aren't too bad at smaller sizes. There are also a couple of shots of the bike with the ugly rubber grips, though at larger sizes you can they blur a bit. All in all I'm thrilled. Now I have a Hunq that can carry anything and a relatively lighter Quickbeam. Good stuff. Re: [RBW] Rivendell Eve
Super! My Hunqa 62 arrived at the beginning of October and I haven't been able to stay off it. My other bikes are jealous. You are going to love the Hunqa. It's a great ride. I thinking of a different bike myself and when I was last in Walnut Creek (back in May) I rode a demo Hunqa and the rest is history. Make sure you take pictures of your first ride (or do what some of us do and take pictures of the whole darn process - I managed to get the UPS guy carrying the box and it went on from there). Aloha! I ordered a AHH in August and 2 weeks ago when Keven and the guys started the build they released wrong frame was sent to them, which turned out to be a good thing, because I was having second thoughts on getting AHH over the Hunqapillar. Keven ended up getting me a deal on the demo (modified to meet my desires), so I didn't have to wait another 8 weeks and I end up with what I really want. [RBW] Reflective Tape on Gripsters
The one thing that folks have commented on with the Gripster Pedals is their lack of a reflective surface and is even mentioned in the online blurb (http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/pe4.htm): The thin-ness of the Thin Gripsters rules out mounting a pedal reflector, a minor bummer, because integral pedal reflectors are always on and they ID you as a bike rider at night. You CAN wear an ankle band, and we have the best one in the world. Or you can Just Ride in the day. I ride a lot at night as I'm commuter and it gets dark early this time of year in Honolulu so…while I do have an ankle band and cannot restrict myself to riding only the day time I found some reflective tape (from Riv) I'd bought a while ago, the Reflexite Tape I believe (http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/re3.htm). I had a couple of inches left so I added a bit to the small channel on each side of the pedal. The angle isn't 90 degrees to the ground but I suspect that 1) it's better than nothing, and 2) at some point during the stoke it's like to be seen. Next time I'm out at night with someone behind me I'll ask them to check. :-) I'm not good with scissors so the cuts aren't quite straight, but isn't that really better anyway? :-) http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/8170765295/in/photostream http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8059/8170765295_31191bfda5.jpg (http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8059/8170765295_31191bfda5.jpg) I've got a lot of bright shiny things on when I ride at night so even if this doesn't add much to mix I'm not particularly concerned, but if it helps, it helps. Re: [RBW] Re: SimpleOne and Double/Double
My QB has a 40/32 in front and the 16/19 in the rear. It also has a solo 22 back the which does come in handy when laden down with camping gear and facing a couple of hills around here. In town I tend to run 40/19 because I can get off the line faster in traffic. Once out on the open road it's back to 40/16. Not thinking about what gear I'm in is great. During the week I'm in commuter mode, on weekend it's open road mode and maybe once a quarter I camp. Re: [RBW] Unexpected Hits on through the knothole
I fell in love with m-bars when I visited Riv a couple of years ago while I was Oakland area on something else. I took a quick ride on a Bomba with m-bars and that was it...had to have 'em. I didn't end up with a Bomba but instead got one of the last Quickbeams in 66cm. Which, incidentally means no shifters. I've been riding it daily as a commuter and on long weekend rides for over a year now and still love 'em. My next bike will have them too I suspect. I've got the Trangia as well and while I don't get out camping enough (this year I have to be elsewhere during my favorite camping/riding excursion - the JBK Haleiwa metric century - which I turned into 4 days of riding and 3 nights camping on Oahu's north shore last year) it's a great set. [RBW] Newbaum's Bar Tape
I just thought I'd show off my Quickbeam in it's new blue livery from Newbaum's. It'd been a long year for my QB. It's become my daily ride (save for a couple of short instances when another bike was warranted). I've ridden it camping, done a century ride, a metric century ride, several 60-80 miles rides outside of group riding, and basically had a heck of a time. As for the bar tape, I'll admit I haven't wrapped bars in...um...to be honest, possibly forever. I think I wrapped a set back in the 80's before I gave up most biking. Suffice to say it's been a while at best. I'd love to say I had no trouble, but the results here are my second attempt. I did a less than perfect job the first time. It wasn't easy to spot but I knew. I'm not saying this job is perfect, but I'm happy. Two rolls of Newbaum's was more than enough and I've got a bit left I may dress up my Platrack with where it can touch the frame when turned. Currently I've got some black tape over old tubing doing the job but matching the bars seems in order. I also mixed my own shellac, getting the shellac flakes online from shellac.net. I wrote a blog entry about it here: http://www.statrix.com/2011/02/13/newbaums-cotton-bar-tape/ I've got a couple pictures, including a comparison with my QB a year ago: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/sets/72157625928366829/with/4339440167/ Aloha! -- Robert Harrison Honolulu, HI rfharri...@gmail.com / www.statrix.com / statrixbob on twitter -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Pasela sidewall failure: Damage or manufacturing defect?
I put at least 2000 (very conservative estimate) miles on a set of the same non-TG Paselas last year here in Honolulu and never had a lick of trouble. They were the original tires on my Quickbeam which I received back in November of 2009. I'm a daily commuter and have ridden several metric century lengths during year, a full century, and a camping trip with about 300 miles in 4 days so they get used. I've only just recently put a new tire up front and rotated the front tire to the rear. Hopefully I'll be as lucky going forward. When I pulled off the rear I didn't notice any particular sidewall damage though admitted I wasn't looking too hard. Both of my tires looked the same as did the one I rotated in, though it was purchased almost a year later. Bob On 2/2/2011 7:42 PM, Earl Grey wrote: Hi, I bought a pair of 35x700C non-TG Paselas in June from Harris Cyclery, and put them on my secondary bike for a couple of rides, and then replaced them with some 40mm tires I bought later. Recently I put them on my Sam for a 100km mixed surface ride since the 40s don't fit under the Sam's fenders, and I wanted something wider than the Jack Browns I usually run on the Sam. When I mounted the Paselas, I noticed that a few of the thin flaps of rubber were still attached to the centerline of the front tire, indicating marginal use. The Paselas were great on the ride, but halfway through the ride I noticed a bulge in the sidewall: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25150892@N08/5412055821/ There are really 2 parallel bulges, one of which has progressed to frayed strands, and both line up with a slight wiggle in the line of the black rubber compound, potentially indicating (?) that these bulges were already there when the black tread was applied to the tire. The other photos show the condition of the tread to demonstrate degree of tire usage. Has anyone had similar experiences with Paselas? Can you tell me whether you think this is a defect or caused by damage (I was riding dirt roads, but with no rocks). I bought two Paselas, one of which has a more subtle, smaller decal, while the other has a larger logo with jaggy edges. Was there a recent batch that had sidewall issues? (The one with the problem is the one with the more subtle, presumably older logo). Still its primary purpose is a city commuter in a city with w hills so it's darn near perfect. http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgps-bob/4339440167 Aloha, Bob On Friday, November 5, 2010, Philip Williamson philip.william...@gmail.com wrote: I was looking at A D's fantastic SimpleOne: http://www.flickr.com/photos/livepake/5133139965/ I think because it looked so beautiful, I wondered if it was his main bike, or one of many. That made me wonder who of us with QBs consider it our primary bike, and who uses it for a specialized purpose, or as a fun secondary bike. My Quickbeam is my main bike. I ride it the most, I lavish the most attention on it, and it's the one I consider my bike! I have two other bikes: a geared mtb, and another 2-speed road bike. Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Grip Kings
And I'll come down on the other side of the wide foot/Grip King debate. I've got wide 12EEE feet and ride GKs on all my bikes and love them. I tried the Touring Pedals but much prefer these. To be fair, I haven't tried Sneaker Pedals. I commute daily and generally do a 50-80 mile ride on the weekend. Mostly I ride my Quickbeam, but I've put them on an old Raleigh ten-speed I have on the Big Island as well as on my beater bike (a old ATB from before it would have been called a mountain bike which is also a single speed these days). I wear size 12 keens when riding and the grip kings felt like they barely made it half way across my foot. Put them on the wife bike, she is a size 7 ot 8 I think and she loves them. if you are going wide and flat look for some decent thin aluminum sealed bearing bmx pedas. vintage mks pedals have some nice patterns and colors as well. I found the Grip Kings pretty slippery actually, and my wide feet like the sneaker pedals quite a bit better. They're cheaper, too. As far as platform pedals go the sneaker pedals are really really hard to beat. Maybe I'm uncoordinated, but even after years of using them, I find it sometimes takes me 20 yards of futzing to flip the pedals the right way and get my feet into both pedals, which has its downsides riding in traffic. The Frogs are basically step n' go. OTOH, with toe clips and straps I have no lingering doubts, as I do with the Frogs, whether I'll somehow not be able to get a foot OUT to keep myself from falling over in a panic stop. Only ridden a week with the Frogs so far. Maybe I'll get used to them and gain confidence in that department. The biggest downside of course with the Frogs is having to wear the only pair of shoes I have with the cleats, rather than whatever happens to be on my feet. Owning a pedal wrench has been a revelation though--I can change pedals in ten minutes to suit the ride. I'm thinkin' Grip Kings could be the pedals for commuting at least. They have lots of fans, I'm interested to see what the buzz is about. Rob in Seattle On Oct 16, 2010, at 2:17 PM, Johnny Alien wrote: I just put a set of Frogs on my Rambouillet.
