[RBW] Re: Fancy Hub Conundrum: Chris King vs. White Industries vs. Hope
Agreed. Bought a King cassette hub for the Bleriot thinking I'd do my part for the local economy/support the Home Team, etc... never again. Love Chris' headsets, but The Angry Bee is not for me. Thousands of miles on it, still louder than a Tea Party get-together at a Metallica concert. On an average night, my wife daughter can hear me coming home from a ride: 4 houses away, while they're inside. No Ninja riding with a King rear hub. I'm either going back to Phil or White after this hub dies--or I shoot it. -Scott On Nov 3, 1:04 pm, Allan in Portland allan_f...@aracnet.com wrote: FWIW, you couldn't give me a Chris King. [RBW] Re: Bleriot Done...
Sean- Really, it's full-on Apples/Oranges. My BBC was designed built for a person who weighed 500 pounds, as such--Stout is an understatement (and for great reasons, it simply had to be). The Bleriot, as well as its Engine (and my next Bob Brown Custom--he's building me a new one currently), all feel-very much-like I would imagine a jackrabbit feels once it gets loose from its trap. The Bleriot feels connected fast to me... but so did my custom when I went from not moving at all to riding at 6mph, to being 460 pounds, to riding at 9mph at 400, and so on. It's all relative, is what I am saying. I feel insanely fast these days after dropping 332 pounds--and on the Bleriot, after a solid year and a half on a Surly Pugsley, I feel like Mark Cavendish on an EPO bender. But all things equal, I am slow. -Scott On Oct 28, 3:12 pm, SeanMac seanm...@gmail.com wrote: Sorry if this is a double post, but I'm still learning how the Google Groups works. [RBW] Re: What would Taubes put in a Boxy (or Candy Bar) Bag for a long ride
Interesting thread (as was the other long'ish one on Taubes' book). I've read his book and was going to reply in that thread but thought better of it... and I've watched this thread and hit Reply a number of times only to then think, Ahh I like Jim and don't want to complicate his life, and thought better of it too. So here's what I will share (and it's really a moot point anyway because people is gonna believe -or be into- whatever it is they desire regardless of Point/Counterpoint). First: what I've learned in 5 years. People dig convenient answers to hard questions. (I did once too, but life doesn't always pan out that way so I had to find my own way) People -also- very much want to have those answers framed around what it is they already know, already enjoy. (and I would have too, probably ...but life didn't pan out that way for me either) Two: There is a great (think, Grand Canyon-sized) divide between Healthy and Fit. The Small die at a similar rate to the Big all the time. Three: I know much about what it takes to lose significant weight and keep it off, but even greater to that I know weight is a shell, that much like a suit when either in or out of it, reveals true numbers of Self, and Hard Work invested into Self. And those numbers do not lie. And I am not speaking of numbers lost with regard to pounds, as significant as they are or can be in any person's particular case... no, I am speaking to the numbers of Labs (blood work, etc). But far better though those, these kinds of numbers: good days (with hugs, smiles, the chance to move freely one's body under its own inertia) added onto a life that was unthinkably horrid, sad, lonely and professionally foretold as supposed to be Pushing Up Daisies a little over 5 years back. The books never reveal those kinds of numbers. Four: Me? I carry water and occasionally a banana (but that's only if my ride is above 30 miles or more)... and it's in a Carradice bag. Sorry. Thanks. Yeah, this year my project has been, what I call, The Year of The Pug. I've tried [am trying] to do all my rides [pleasure, errands, etc] via The Pug. Mostly successful so far, a few rides on the Bleriot/a couple on my custom [before I stored it away] and a couple on loaners whilst traveling, but otherwise... it's been All-Pug, All-The-Time. I shot for 20K last year, almost made it too [short by 300 miles], wanted 25K this year, got The Pug and realized impossible, unless I am willing to either weigh 90 pounds by X-Mas land in the ER and/or begin intaking an additional 2000 calories per day... so I feel like 16-17K by year's end on the Pug is good. [RBW] Man-Topic [Shaving Facial Hair]
Odd? Unrelated? I think not [Rivendell sells Porto-Shaving-Cream, so... ]. I am not one to shave often. When I do it's for two distinct reasons: 1. I look up, while brushing teeth, and jump with fright at what I see looking back at me in the mirror. Or... 2. My wife and/or daughter tell me to [because I repulse them]. Fair enough. For years, and because I have a 'Stache, I've simply used an 'lectric trimmer [no, not an actual electric shaver--more of an electric beard trimmer] and it leaves a fair amount of stubble... so I am not really ever -that- shaved right after I shave. So, I grew [pun] tired of the stubbled look and began a search for a non-electric shaver that doesn't look an Apple product or like a Casio Baby-G wristwatch, or is not disposable... and it took a minute too. And then I found a site called Classic Shaving... wow, the choices were about as endless as looking for a new tire pump on a walk through Interbike. In the end, I selected a nice German shaver, a Merkur [just like my dad used when I was a youngster], some blades, a nice brush, mug and some cream. Cost around $160.00 for the whole setup, but I figure it'll save money over time, space in land fills and I can have a better shave [when I remember to do it]. Anyway else here shave 'Old Skool'? Was tempted to enter my toes into the world of Straight Razors but the prices for those [plus all the additional accessories] -and the thoughts of all the failures while in the Learning Curve stage Re: loss of facial skin- put the kibosh on that. PS-- Guess this could be a Lady-Topic too [but I doubt many women would own up to having facial hair that needs shaving]. -Scott -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Thinking it was a mix of 'acclimation' [yep, you got 'er right... was running 26x1.25 @100psi on my custom before I retired her] and just plain 'new everything' syndrome [the bike, the build, the setup, all of it, and more]. [RBW] Re: The Bleriot Build...
Sadly on one hand [so many fantastic memories, plus... how can I even begin to process personally what that bike has done for with me?], and excitedly on the other [because it kind of means Success, look what you've accomplished... ] the answer is, Yes I am. The Bob Brown custom [what I call BBC#1 to differentiate from my wife's Bob Brown BBC#2], while it's gone through about 20 different incarnations as my body has changed in the last 4.5 years and is still sprite and nimble in its current setup, has a geometry that no longer can really be altered through components and adjustments to suit my body. It's what I call, Comfortably uncomfortable. I am stripping it down to just frame fork and packing it away. I'll never sell it [how could I?] but I am of the mind that it is time to look forward. Some of the parts will go onto the Bleriot, some to the Parts Bin. All that said, Bob is building me another bike. So that one [a full- on/purpose-built Rando bike w/SS couplers], plus the Bleriot [Big Dummy and Pugsley], and I am covered in my estimate. After quite a bit of thinking, and then talking with my wife, it's time to pack it away... but I am excited about what's next. And what's next for me is personally very big... and I'll be needing a bike that can take me into this new chapter. Made myself two basic promises at the start of all this: No.1 is intact and held close to heart, and accomplished maintained daily; No.2, well that one... it's time to start paying up on that one because I have to know what I am capable of. Heavy heart, blah, blah, blah, yada, yada [but it is kind of heavy honestly said: BBC#1 saved my life]... -Scott On Jun 11, 2:52 pm, Jansenh blink...@gmail.com wrote: Scott, Used to follow your blog (but didn't post much). When I straddle my Bleriot [even in it's 'naked' state of just frameset wheelset], it fits me perfectly in terms of SO height @59.
